Knowing our Arcanists 9: Eagle

Welcome to entry nine of my series: "Knowing our Arcanists"! This is a series in which I introduce and tell the stories of our fellow characters in Reverse: 1999. This week's character is: Eagle!

Gotta love the baby of the people. I hope she knows that she's very well loved by the entire R1999 community, and deserves all that love. Lets get started.

Eagle is an American arcanist born in the 1900s on July 21st. She was born and raised in Washington, D.C. She also lived in proximity to Virginia, USA, and occasionally visited there. Despite her weak power, her arcane skill is involved in being able to perceive her environment in greater detail.

She was raised in a relatively normal and loving home, and had a passion in wanting to join the Boy Scouts like how her father was once part of the military. This passion was further amplified after her father passed away.

The Boy Scouts of America was founded in 1910, and many young boys were eager to join it. Many donned the green uniforms and saluted towards the flag. However, many girls like Eagle had been turned away for their gender and the organization's preference for this newfound generation of boys. Her being turned away by the BSA did not stop Eagle, though. (Note: the Girl Scouts of the USA was founded by Juliette Gordon Law. But unfortunately, Eagle missed news of it due to being away at the time.)

She tried her best to prove her worth as a Boy Scout, doing numerous tasks a boy scout would do in her hometown and even possibly having made her outfit similar to a boy scout's own. She put little time in resting and continuously worked hard to at the very least be recognized.

On one fateful day in 1912, the Boy Scouts were missing a character named "Xavier," and Eagle overheard of the news. Still determined, she decided to search for this "Xavier" on her own, despite lacking information as to who "Xavier" is. At some point in the day, she encounters a boy in an abandoned factory named X.

X was no Boy Scout, but he allowed Eagle to help him with his task, which ended up being a controlled demolition of this factory. This demolition caused some animals to panic, including a dog that quickly found its way to X and Eagle. It was then discovered that "Xavier" was a missing dog, and that a pair of other boy scouts were looking for him.

Eagle and the Boy Scouts went back and forth with who found the dog, but ultimately ended with the fact that the Eagle did find him. However, the Scout Leader wouldn’t award her unless she brought X to vouch for her, but she couldn’t do so because she had no idea where he went.

Dejected, she went to the graveyard and mourned her late father. Soon, X arrived, claiming that he and Eagle's father were once colleagues, and that Eagle was just like him; cautious, determined. X offered her to join the Institutum Lorentz, and left her to think.

Prior to this, another man who also knew her father had offered her that same path, and had left Eagle conflicted. She ultimately decided to accept the offer, which put her and her mother under the Institutum Lorentz's protection.

Eagle is a timid but active kid. She's determined and sets her mind on working towards the goals she wants to achieve despite her weak power. She's also very willing to help her friends and family, wanting to protect and serve them. Eagle can also be described as being quite blunt and having a bit of an attention deficit, but she tries to improve that as much as possible with self-discipline.

Eagle can become incredibly dedicated to her work to a point where it can be to her own detriment, restraining herself from enjoying trivial things and taking the time to relax. It may be because she's still grieving, struggling to cope with losing her father.

That loss is her driving force to work hard. She wants to make those around her, especially him, proud of everything she can all do now. Maybe in that same end, she'll relax once she makes closure with that grief.

I suppose most of you will choose Team Timekeeper. It's almost a no-brainer at this point. But when I think about it, some beloved characters are in the Foundation, and Lorentz is also a very interesting faction. And then there's Manus Vindictae whose members are hot but baddies. HMMMMMMMMMM.

This is a sort of follow-up to the UTTU ask I sent a while ago, thinking about why Getian and Isolde are categorized as they are. With Getian being "preserved," it's most likely because he's the last of his species, and thus is "preserved" by the Foundation. This could also work with Jiu, considering she's half-Lushu iirc. Regarding Isolde, being "archived" does probably relate to her being seen as dangerous to the Foundation. But I also realized that Isolde, probably being one of the few survivors and one of the direct causes of the Vienna Storm, the Foundation is in need of primary sources. And here are some other things I noticed in other characters' bios: Both AliEn T and Voyager are stated to be "controlled" by the Foundation in their bios. It's probably in the same vein as Isolde, where they're considered dangerous and need to be monitored by the Foundation. And I'm assuming that Institutum Lorentz, a hidden/secret organization within Laplace, is okay with being publicly being named in a magazine popular with arcanists. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - Mayeux

I think that's a pretty solid theory! I wonder if the next chapter might give us more insight on Isolde's situation too. Or maybe Kakania can introduce new information. Uttu's way of categorizing arcanists is really interesting 👀

St. Pavlov Foundation

By 1999, the Foundation has branches in more than 89 countries and regions. The St Pavlov Foundation is one of the biggest alongside what’s referred to as The Chicago Branch in Book 4.

I think the head of the St Pavlov Foundation might be a metahuman or a machine.

School of Discipline

The School of Discipline is best shown within Book 3, “Nouvelles et Textes Pour Rien”, as well as within [A Nightmare at Greenlake].

While Book 3 goes through Vertin’s experience as a child going through The School of Discipline, [The Old One Flew Over the House] is the player being able to go through the school as Jessica so that she can become a registered Arcanist albeit on the accelerated course.

Laplace Scientific Computing Center

Referred to as Laplace within the storyline.

There are multiple branches of The Laplace Scientific Computing Center itself but the one in the game is the only one affiliated with The Foundation through The St Pavlov location. (1.10)

Medicine Pocket is the leader of the Scientific Computing Center (however not involved with Institutum Lorentz), and X is their vice head (Source : I think I remember it). 

Medicine Pocket is studying biology and is in charge of biological testing in Laplace. The exact study of what and why is unconfirmed (check voice lines later).

I think Medicine Pocket’s study would be related to making Foundation Staff resistant to attacks from enemies or making enemies more susceptible to attacks from staff. (One of their skills is debuff which is a resistance control)

Between the Prologue “This is Tomorrow” and the first book “In Our Time”, Regulus is sent to the Foundation to be registered as an Arcanist. She implies she's been assigned to the Scientific Computing Center (Unclear whether Madam Z assigned her there or she was by the system). When they get there she’s scouted by X to join a secretive group of researchers within Laplace investigating the Storm separate from the Foundation, Institutum Lorentz. (1.10)

x was always working tirelessly,

the institutum lorentz was practically his home with how much time he always spent there, creating and thinking up an infinite amount of different possibilities with boundless curiosity held by himself. his intentional ability to never be found by anyone was a gift as it granted him the peace and quiet he loved to use to get on with his countless experiments,

and before x met you, that was essentially his whole life - but that more solitary lifestyle was now in the past. now, he had a reason to finally part himself from his research and even finish up his side tasks within more reasonable time. his reason was simply the fact that he now couldn't wait to see you again at the end of his day.

especially after he's had a particularly long, and maybe even difficult, day - you could say the same. you barely saw x during the day and so you couldn't wait for the end of the day when x was finally relieved of his duties and able to see you again. although, rather admittedly some days you never did see him directly but if that were to ever occur, x always made the effort to spare a moment or two for you to leave you a message with a simple apology and promise to see you as soon as possible,

fortunately, today was a day in which x was able to garner some time away from the institutum and with you instead.

admittedly you had both had exhausting days and so both of you were rather content to spend your time together relaxing. x would readily make himself a cup of tea and would additionally make you a beverage of your choosing. he would then soon find himself lounging around with you.

and that was how your evening was spent, with you and x cuddled up doing nothing but having a conversation. x would be telling you stories or anything that happened in his day and he would be very ready to go and get you anything you asked, another drink? done. snacks? done.

and very soon, the stress and tiredness from the day's toils were melted away, something as simple and small as spending time in each other's embrace was all you both needed - eventually ending up in you both drifting off to sleep.

When exactly The Spi-borg and Strike slowly bled into just Cario and Sophia, they will never know. What the world knows is that one day, The Spi-borg was without his deadlier shadow, and Cario’s friends know that he lost Sophia, his partner, the sails to his anchor; the love of his life. Great things end; and what they had was indeed that—the pain, the healing, the love, finding home in each other (despite, despite, despite). That’s all it was. And they deserved more.

Some notes on Sophia;

Soviya Orsevi (later on: Sophia Parker) was a snake from the Institutum Serpenses, an institute dedicated to training girls to be assassins. After NiteMax and its connections shut down (including InSerpenses), she’ll spend her life finding those who worked with NiteMax and the Institute until she will no longer be haunted by a past she could not control. ‬

Also I don’t mean “snake” like, the reptile. Think of Black Widow, her past, and the widows she trained with. The Insitutum Serpenses and the girls they train to be “snakes” is essentially this dimension’s version of that.

I’m not sure how to talk about her being Cario’s canon event without full on rambling but, long story short: Sophia was sick with the same chemicals that had almost k’lled Cario (before the spider bite ‘reset’ his body/system)

Sol Fertilis: Omega Laws

The Omega Laws are a set of laws and mandates created to enforce “traditional” Omega roles in Verdorica and, later, Sol Fertilis. This is prior to the five “Open Policy Omega Laws”, where Omegas gain small but significant rights.

Omega Heat Suppression Ban (Lex Inhibitionis Caloris Omega)- The legal prohibition of heat suppressant medications or treatments for Omegas. This also extends to other forms of birth control for Omegas.

Omega Employment Realignment Act (Lex Reordinatio Implicatio Omega)- To remove Omegas from employment in all sectors. This is meant to have Omegas prioritize reproduction and child-rearing. This law was passed without the knowledge of the general public.

Marital Unification Act (Lex Coniugis Unificationis)- This law annulled all marriages between Omegas and non-Alphas. This also prevents any Omega from getting a marriage certificate if their spouse is not an Alpha. By default, cross-rank relationships are banned. 

Omega Educational Exclusion Act (Lex Exclusio Educandi Omega)- This law effectively prohibited Omegas from attending or entering colleges and higher education institutions.

Omega Education Restructuring Act (Lex Restructura Educandi Omega)- This law brings in a different curriculum for Omega students and is revised to emphasize subjects that are deemed suitable for their future roles and responsibilities within society. This only focuses on childrearing, domestic skills, and textile arts. 

Omega Financial Freeze Act (Lex Congelatio Financiarum Omega)- This froze all bank accounts that are under any Omega’s name. None of them can’t have access to them. Their money would be sent to their Alpha spouses’ names or the government take the money until they get married. 

Omega Mobility Restriction Act (Lex Restrictio Mobilis Omega)- This law banned Omegas from owning and using cars, trucks, bicycles, and other methods of independent transportation. 

Omega Co-Residency Mandate (Lex Cohabitatio Omega)- This legal measure aims to restrict Omegas from living alone. Instead, it mandates that they reside in communal or supervised living arrangements due to purported safety concerns.

Omega Monthly Health Checkup Mandate (Lex Mandatum Mensis Sanitatis Omega)- This law mandates all Omega individuals to undergo monthly medical checkups, primarily focusing on their reproductive and overall health

Omega Creativity Ban (Lex Creativitatis Omega)- This law created a complete prohibition on any form of entertainment, artistic expression, or creative work produced by Omegas.

Omega Travel Companion Mandate (Lex Socii Viatorum Omega)- This law prevents Omegas from traveling alone outside of their homes, especially if they are young or unmarried.

Omega Custody Restriction Act (Lex Restrictionis Custodiae Omega)- This law that restricts non-Alpha and non-Omega citizens from having custody of Omega children. 

Omega Reformation Act (Lex Reforma Omega)- It is the mandatory placement of all Omegas into specialized facilities aimed at "restructuring" their minds and bodies. The four places are the Pink Center, Coelestis Progressus Omega Institutum/Heavenly Progress Omega Institute, Conservatio Omega Domus/Preservation Omega House, and Omega Sanctum.

Omega Rehabilitation and Repurposing Act (Lex Rehabilitatio et Redestinatio Omega)- This law is used to repurpose Omega individuals who have committed criminal offenses into conforming to traditional gender roles focused on family and child-rearing responsibilities. 

Omega Dress Code Act (Lex Vestitus Omega)- It is a clothing mandate that requires Omegas to only wear traditional clothes and shades of red. This is also based on their age and marital status.

So, I am a total noob, but I am really interested in learning the Ancient Egyptian language and I was hoping you could help me by listing some books and dictionaries that you believe believe would help someone from going zero to hero with this amazing language.

First of, in case you weren’t already aware, you have to keep in mind that “Ancient Egyptian” isn’t a single language, but is comprised of 5 different language stages. Namely Old Egyptian, Middle Egyptian, Late Egyptian, Demotic and Coptic. And then there’s Hieratic, which is a cursive script used to write down hieroglyphs on papyrus or ostraca. 

You always want to start with Middle Egyptian, which is something of the “classic” stage of the language, and the easiest. Old Egyptian is sort of similar but has a good number of extremely annoying grammatical deviations and pitfalls, and is actually one of the hardest stages of the language to learn. Late Egyptian is technically another language entirely, with different grammar but similar vocabulary. Demotic is a further evolution of Late Egyptian, but instead of hieroglyphs/Hieratic it’s written in Demotic script, which itself is derived from Hieratic. Coptic is the final stage, and this is written in an adapted version of the Greek alphabet. Here, again, you’ll be dealing with new grammar, script, and vocab.

I was taught from Ockinga’s book and that’d be my preference, but others have been taught by/from Collier & Manley. The latter is a perfect book for non-academic beginners, so that would be the number one recommendation to learn Middle Egyptian.

In terms of order of learning, as said you want to start with Middle Egyptian. Then it’s best to have a go at Coptic before you move to Late Egyptian. Leave Old Egyptian last, and Demotic I’d not even suggest touching with a 10 ft pole.
