I had high hopes for this 1900 charmer in historic Old Louisville, KY, but the updates slightly miss the mark. 5bds, 3ba, and not bad at $475K.

Loved the entrance hall fireplace. I assume that the armoire was placed there for coats and will not convey. That's ok, I'd rather have an antique coat tree.

This is nice- it was 1900 and the railings reflect a more modern look.

The sitting room was modernized- large new window and artsy black & white new fireplace.

Can't tell if the pocket doors are still there. The moldings are original, but I think that if the colors and furniture were different, it would look better. The inlaid floor looks great.

The kitchen footprint is essentially the same, but they skimped on the cabinetry and used metal shelves instead. They also installed a new glass door to the garden.

They placed a large banquette in this side room. Don't know if they'll leave it, but I wouldn't care if they didn't.

Updated bath painted red. I've seen the pattern on the curtain on HGTV a lot, but as wallpaper.

Stairs have been refinished.

The primary bedroom is spacious, has a fireplace and is basically original, but it's open to another bedroom.

Like that it has a fireplace.

I think that this is supposed to be a sitting room area for the primary bedroom. There's an en-suite right there.

Remodeled bath.

Home office has an original fireplace.

Going up to the 3rd level.

They've got beds up here, but it would be a nice family room. Love the keyhole hearth.

There's another bath up here.

I'm guessing that the only way to get into the basement is from the outside.

Plenty of storage space, though. I think that with some color and decor, this could be a beautiful home for the price.

Not much of a yard on the 3,049 sq. ft. lot, but I'm thinking there's potential for a rooftop deck.

The sharp exchange between the White House aide and Bacon, who is facing an unexpectedly difficult reelection race, reflects just how much Trump has isolated himself — even from members of his own party who rarely break with him — on an issue that has come to the forefront of the political debate amid a national outcry for racial justice.

It will take center stage on Capitol Hill this week, when the House and Senate each consider sweeping annual military bills that contain bipartisan measures mandating that the Pentagon remove Confederate names from military assets. Trump, who has sought to stoke cultural and political divisions over symbols of the Confederacy, has said he would veto any bill with such a requirement.

The disconnect has raised the prospect of a rare, election-year clash between congressional Republicans and Trump on the military bill, the measure that authorizes pay raises for U.S. troops and is regarded as must-pass legislation. Despite the president’s unapologetic stance, most Republicans have been unwilling to defend symbols of the Confederacy, and some have warned the president not to force the first veto override of his presidency.

The House voted on Monday to begin consideration of the bill and is expected to pass it this week, as the Senate debates a similar measure slated to be approved next week.

Trump, who has positioned himself against a growing movement for racial justice, renewed his veto threat in an interview aired Sunday. Trump told Fox News’ Chris Wallace that he rejected the counsel of military leaders like Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who has called for taking “a hard look” at changing the names of the bases.

“We won two world wars, two world wars, beautiful world wars that were vicious and horrible, and we won them out of Fort Bragg,” Trump said. “We won them out of all of these forts, and now they want to throw those names away.”

On Monday, Sen. James M. Inhofe, R-Okla., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, batted away the prospect of a veto showdown.

“He’s threatened several times to do that, but he also knows that’s the most important bill of the year,” Inhofe said in a brief interview.

The measures cruising through Congress along bipartisan lines, including Bacon’s proposal and a separate one in the Senate, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., go much further than an order issued by the Pentagon late last week that effectively banned displays of the Confederate flag on military installations around the world. Warren’s amendment would require the Pentagon to strip all military assets of names and symbols of the Confederacy within three years. Another measure in House Democrats’ military spending bill would provide the Army with $1 million to rename the installations and other assets.

Few Republicans in Congress have rallied to Trump’s side on the issue. Senate Republican leaders have moved to avoid a contentious showdown on the issue, ducking a vote on a proposal by Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., to remove Warren’s requirement and replace it with a weaker measure that would instruct the Pentagon to study the issue.

“This cancel movement seeks to divide us, not unite; to erase our history, rather than to reckon with it,” Hawley said in a speech on the Senate floor, accusing proponents of Warren’s measure of being driven by “a kind of woke fundamentalism.”

Taking such a vote on the Senate floor would have squeezed several Republicans in tight reelection battles. And Republican leaders in both chambers on Capitol Hill have been largely supportive of the effort to rename the bases.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the majority leader, told The Wall Street Journal last week that he would not block the effort to rename the bases, and in an interview with a Louisville radio station, he said he didn’t “have any problem” with renaming the bases for “people who didn’t rebel against the country.” He has urged the president not to veto the bill.

“The issue of Army bases being named after Confederate generals is a legitimate concern in the times in which we live,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. “I’m OK with a process that the Senate came up with. And there’s a lot of good things in this bill.”

Rep. Mac Thornberry of Texas, the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, opposed the measure’s deadlines, saying that it did not give the Pentagon enough time to facilitate community discussion around the change and that the end goal should be “increased understanding and changed hearts.”

“My personal opinion is that the names of some, if not all, of these installations should be changed,” Thornberry said.

Her Father Was Executed for Murder. She Still Wants to Know if He Did It.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — April Alley had last spoken with her father when she was a girl of 10, so there was plenty of catching up to do when they met about 15 years later, in the noisy visiting area of a prison in Nashville.

She told him about her life as an adult: college, marriage, a home near Louisville.

Her father, Sedley Alley, talked about being a convicted murderer on death row, and the haze of his ragged years as an alcoholic and drug addict.

Near the end of their meeting, she posed the question that had shadowed her since childhood. Was he really a killer who had raped and impaled a young Marine?

“I asked him, ‘Did you do that? If you did or not, you’re still my dad and I love you,’” Ms. Alley recalled.

His reply was the same opaque answer he gave psychiatrists after his arrest in 1985, and continued to give to anyone who asked, right until his execution in 2006. He did not know.

“He said, ‘If I did do it, I deserve what I get,’” Ms. Alley said. “‘But I don’t remember doing it.’”

On Tuesday, Ms. Alley, 43, asked a judge in Memphis to grant her what the courts had refused her father during his lifetime: DNA testing of evidence from the murder. She realizes the results might cement her father’s guilt, giving her an answer that he could not — or would not — provide.

“I don’t want it to be like that — that he actually did it,” Ms. Alley said. “But it would almost make it easier. Because the thought of all of that happening for no reason doesn’t sit well with me at all.”

Mr. Alley went to his death based on scant physical evidence and a confession that he claimed he had been forced to give.

Five years after he died, the Tennessee Supreme Court said that denying his request for DNA testing had been a mistake.

Ms. Alley has become executor of his estate and “now stands in the shoes of her father, seeking the truth,” her petition for testing says.

The kind of post-mortem inquiry she seeks is “incredibly rare,” said Brandon L. Garrett, a professor of law at Duke University.

“The prisoner is deceased, the case is closed and the evidence is destroyed,” Professor Garrett said.

Sometimes, though, evidence is preserved. Ever since the Alley trial in 1987, the Shelby County clerk has kept exhibits that include the victim’s underwear, a pair of red briefs apparently worn by the attacker and a 31-inch tree branch.

Mr. Alley’s DNA was harvested while he was alive and is still in storage, according to Kelley J. Henry, a federal public defender who represented him in his last years.

If the testing goes forward and unambiguously points to someone other than Mr. Alley as the killer, it could become the first time DNA has exonerated a person put to death in the United States.

For nearly two decades after Mr. Alley’s arrest, no one disputed in court that he was the killer; his original lawyers argued that he was not guilty by reason of insanity. In 2003, new lawyers said a fresh investigation raised serious doubts about his guilt that only DNA tests could resolve.

Prosecutors said that the request was a stalling maneuver, and that even if someone else’s DNA were found, it would not clear Mr. Alley. They prevailed.

The murder occurred one night in July 1985. Lance Corporal Suzanne Collins, 19, left the barracks at Naval Air Station Millington, just outside Memphis, to take her daily 10-mile run. She had just finished nine months of avionics training.

Around 11 p.m., two fellow Marines running the other way crossed paths with her. Moments later, they dodged a station wagon swerving along the road, in the same direction that Corporal Collins had been running.

After it passed, they heard a woman hollering, “Don’t touch me! Leave me alone!” They ran toward the shouts and saw a car, which they believed was the same station wagon, stopped on the side of the road. It sped off. A second car came their way and they tried to wave it down, but the driver did not stop. They ran to the gatehouse. A guard sounded an alarm for a possible abduction.

About an hour later, just after midnight, Mr. Alley was stopped near the base driving a rattling 1972 station wagon. A Navy investigator noted that he had no visible injuries.

Mr. Alley, then 29, was not in the service — he had been discharged some years earlier for drug and alcohol abuse — but his wife was in the Navy. After she was questioned, the investigators concluded that the jogging Marines had heard the Alleys squabbling, not an abduction.

At that point, no one knew Corporal Collins was missing. The alert for the station wagon was canceled. The Alleys were sent home for the night. A patrol kept an eye on their house.

The next morning, Corporal Collins’s body was found in a park.

She had been struck 100 blows and strangled. The attacker had stripped a tree branch of twigs, sharpened the tip, then drove it through her body.

Mr. Alley, who had no criminal record, was promptly arrested. Over a period of hours, he denied knowing anything about the woman and asked for a lawyer.

But then, investigators said, before consulting anyone, he proceeded to volunteer that he had sideswiped Corporal Collins while driving drunk, accidentally stabbed her in the head with a screwdriver — both details untrue, the medical examiner testified — and staged the crime scene.

Mr. Alley would later claim the investigators had turned on the tape recorder only when he said what they wanted to hear, not during the browbeating that led up to his statement. The authorities said they had merely asked him what happened.

They also said he showed them where Corporal Collins’s body had been found, but a transcript of a recording of the car ride does not indicate that he gave any directions.

Mr. Alley’s lawyers were unable to get information from him about the crime, so he was turned over to psychiatrists. One wrote that he “did not seem overtly delusional, except in his assessment of the police tactics and his belief that they would have beaten him if he had not confessed to the crime, said they could have gotten away with it because they were the police.”

The physical evidence in the case, analyzed with the primitive tools available in 1985, was suggestive but far from conclusive. On the driver’s door of the station wagon, authorities reported finding Type O blood, the same as the victim’s and Mr. Alley’s. Paper napkins from Danver’s, a regional restaurant chain, were on the floor of his car as well as near the body, the investigators said. Also in the car was proof that he had been in the vicinity of the crime: an air conditioner pump that had been installed earlier in the day at a house near where Corporal Collins had been running. Plainly, Mr. Alley had stolen it.

However, no traces of Corporal Collins — no fingerprints, hair or blood — were found inside his car or, for that matter, on Mr. Alley. No physical evidence showed he had been in a prolonged struggle with a 19-year-old Marine in excellent condition.

April Alley spoke to a reporter last month in Louisville, where she works in human resources for a hospital. As a teenager, she said, she was turned against her father by a hostile relative.

In her 20s, she reconnected with him at Riverbend Maximum Security prison. He was frank about his drug and alcohol use, she said, and told her that he had confessed under threat. She became inclined to believe him.

In 2003, an investigator, April Higuera, turned up an undisclosed handwritten note by the medical examiner estimating that Corporal Collins died after Mr. Alley had been sent home and kept under police watch.

Ms. Higuera also located a romantic partner of Corporal Collins who drove a station wagon and was about the same height, 5-foot-8, as a man seen near the abduction. Mr. Alley was eight inches taller.

Citing these discoveries, Ms. Henry, the lawyer, said: “We tried every way possible to get back into court and to get DNA.”

Across the country, views on post-conviction DNA testing have changed as more wrongful convictions have come to light. All 50 states now give prisoners some access to DNA testing, though the hurdles vary.

If the evidence is tested, the results could be compared to a national registry of DNA collected from offenders and unsolved crimes, and to genetic genealogy databases, said Barry C. Scheck, a founder of the Innocence Project.

The case was reopened by the organization after Mr. Scheck received a tip that a man charged last year with murder and rapes in Missouri had also been stationed at Millington base for some of the time Corporal Collins was there. (Military records show that the man had been sent to a base in California before the murder.)

As Mr. Alley’s execution approached, he tried to forbid April and his son, David, from attending. They insisted, and just after 1:30 a.m. on June 28, 2006, took seats at the front of the witness room.

Blinds were still shut on the viewing window, but audio was already being piped in. They heard him coming.

“Chains clanking,” Ms. Alley said.

When the blinds opened, Mr. Alley lay on a steel gurney. An intravenous line ran from a wall into his right arm. He turned to his daughter and son. They stood and pressed their hands to the glass.

Someone yelled that they were blocking the view.

Thieves Plunder Barns for Precious Loot: Farmhouse-Chic Wood

The surge in popularity of farmhouse chic, featured on shows like HGTV’s “Fixer Upper,” has led to a surprising rash of criminal activity, as crowbar-wielding thieves have descended on America’s heartland in search of authentically weathered wood planks.

In places like Kentucky, criminals are dismantling century-old barns plank by plank under the cover of night, according to the Louisville-based Courier Journal. The rustic booty can then be sold for a pretty penny to suppliers and builders, to be used in handcrafted tables and cabinets or Pinterest-perfect statement walls.

At least 13 Kentucky counties have reported such thefts, according to the Courier Journal. There’s no telling how prevalent barn-wood theft is across the country, but the sheriff’s office in Cumberland County, a community with fewer than 7,000 residents, is now seeing 20 or more barns burglarized a year, the Courier Journal reported.

Miscreants stole the doors and some of the wood off the sides of 95-year-old Lois Coffey‘s barn in Burkesville, KY. Her father-in-law had put up the building decades ago to store tobacco.

Coffey reported the theft to the police and her insurance company. She’s also had cameras installed to spot the bandits if they come back to her farm.

“It’s pretty low,” the retired elementary school teacher told realtor.com. “They ought to get a job or [find] work to do instead of stealing people’s stuff.”

What’s the appeal of old barn wood?

Battered, old wood planks may seem like an unlikely candidate for a gold rush, but they became popular about a decade ago for use on ceilings or as box beams (to camouflage wiring, plumbing, or other unsightly systems), say design experts. Today, the weathered beams have also become a popular material for accent walls thanks to its gray hue.

“That washed tone just suggests resort living, mountain living, relaxed living,” says Marc Thee, co-founder of high-end interior design firm Marc-Michaels, in Winter Park, FL. “The irregularity of it is part of its beauty.”

Barn wood is also one of the most rustic and easiest of the reclaimed woods to work with. It’s a more sustainable option than cutting down trees growing today. And the wood is often 150 to 200 years old, much older than what’s being used today. Older wood is often stronger and more resistant to pests.

Plus, there’s a vast supply of it in rural America.

Why is there so much barn wood?

“The whole country was built on the back of barns,” says Karl Kirven, owner of Barnstormerswood. The Gilson, IL–based company dismantles old barns and uses the wood as flooring and in new homes. The company also sells it.

“Barns were the heart and soul of the agrarian country.”

But with the move toward industrial farming, the machinery is often too big to put into these barns. More farmers also are having trouble making ends meet and are going out of business. That means there are plenty of fallow structures, particularly throughout the Midwest, Rust Belt, and the South.

“The barns are becoming obsolete,” Kirven says.

That makes them easy targets for criminals—and the ill-gotten gains can be hefty.

A single square foot of barn wood, which is 12 inches long and 1 inch thick, can sell for $5 to $10. The wood in an average-size barn can fetch anywhere from $12,500 to more than $500,000 in some cases.

“The demand for barn wood is really high,” Kirven says. “[So] there’s a gold rush to take these barns down.”
