I missed #SerpentDay! Hopefully my snake friends will forgive me for being a day late... Here’s a #FunFact about snake mobility to make up for it: Snakes have several ways of moving through the environment. We usually associate the serpentine motion with snake movement, (makes sense, right?) But some snakes use sidewinder motion and sometimes the rectilinear method is used. Basically rectilinear method of locomotion means to move in a straight line. For snakes, that requires the scale on the belly to lift up, move forward, push down and then back, in an alternating pattern to move the body forward. This video shows an older red-tailed boa using the rectilinear method while out for a slither.‬ .
