WhatsApp new feature

Literally, I can write a novel on WhatsApp features list. Every other day, there is something on WhatsApp new features. Recently WhatsApp launched five features related to WhatsApp status. For this info click here. Now coming to the point, if you use WhatsApp you know that there is a limit to sending photos. You cannot send more than 25 or 30 odd photos at a time. That means if you have to send 50 photos then you can’t send all 50 images at once. You have to send it two times.

WhatsApp is going to not remove the limit but instead increase it. It is being said that WhatsApp will soon allow users to send 100 photos at once. Isn’t this great? I am eagerly waiting for this one because I tend to share photos in bulk and this feature is gonna be a relief. Bard AI cost Google 144 Billion dollars

ChatGPT has been the talk of the town for the last few months. After all, ChatGPT is very capable and helpful. In competition to this, we were expecting something like this from Google. And believe it or not our expectations were a bit higher. To our anticipation, Google launched its own AI called Bard. According to Google, Bard is an AI service that provides conversational results to our queries. This is powered by LaMDA. It uses Google’s huge collection of language models and collects information from the web. Bard is still in the experimental stage. Google shared a short GIF video on Twitter showing Bard in action. To this point, the world was watching Google and this is when everything went upside down for Google. In the GIF video, Bard answered wrong. What was the question Bard answered wrong? In the short ad video, Bard was asked: “what new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old about?” Bard responded with three points answer and the last point was where it went wrong. In the third point, it included: “JWST took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.” This answer is incorrect because as confirmed by NASA, European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) is the first telescope to capture pictures of a planet outside of our solar system. This news spread like fire in the forest and Google had to suffer a tremendous $144 billion loss. This is what a few seconds of video can do.

Google Lens is getting an upgrade

We all know what Google lens can do. It can extract and read text from an object, or photo. It can also translate the texts for you. It can tell you information about objects. For example, you can find the name of a product, or a flower just by looking through Google's lens.

But now, Google is upgrading Lens. You can literally scan anything be it a building, hotel, animal, car, or whatever, it can tell. Even if you are in an app or watching a video on your phone or any website, without leaving what you are doing, you can use Google lens and find more information about it. So this new Google lens feature of being able to work anywhere across apps and websites makes a huge improvement. It is very important for those who don’t want to type or are not well at typing so that they can just scan it and they will get all the details. Instagram walking on Twitter footsteps

There was a time when the blue tick resembled authenticity but now it resembles status. Anyone can get this tick nowadays. It was Twitter that started charging users for the blue tick. Now it is being said that Instagram will also do the same. This was spotted by the reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. In the past, he has found several features of Instagram ahead of its official launch.

So this news is also likely to be official by Instagram in the future. He shared this information writing that Instagram is working on a subscription plan which will include the blue tick/badge as well. He also wrote at the bottom stating that he has just found a few small references in the code about this new paid plan. So until he become certain and post with screenshots he asked people to consider this news a rumor.

Ford to cut jobs

2023 has not been a great year for the employees so far. Everyone has the dream to work in giant companies like Google, Microsoft, Twitter, and Facebook. But looking at the current scenario, we feel glad that we are not working there because these all companies are laying employees in large numbers. It is being said that Ford is planning to cut 3800 jobs in Europe. Statistically, Ford plans to kick out 2300 people in Germany, 1300 in the U.K., and the remaining 200 elsewhere in Europe.  But Ford also clarified that it is not going to remove these employees all at once and all of a sudden. It said that 3800 jobs will be just over the next three years. The reason they gave for this decision was that it wants to adopt a leaner structure as it is focusing on electric vehicle production for the future. Instagram enabled an option that allows users to apply for a badge, rather than waiting on the site to deem them worthy. However, the social media site didn't list any criteria it will consider while reviewing a user's application. "A verified badge is a check that appears next to an Instagram account's name in the search and on the profile. It means Instagram has confirmed that an account is the authentic presence of the public figure, celebrity or global brand it represents," Instagram explained in a post online. Follow below steps to get verified blue tick on your Instagram account: Step 1: Login, go to your profile and tap 

Once you log into your Instagram account, head to your profile and click the three-lined bar at the top right corner. Step 2: Go to Settings -> Request Verification. Once you click on the bar, you'll see an option to click on Settings, located at the bottom of your screen. After clicking Settings, scroll down to Request Verification. Step 3: Submit a form. Enter your full name and submit a form of ID

              Your Instagram username should automatically be filled in unless you're logged into a different account. Users who wish to be verified just need to enter their full name and then attach a photo of a government-issued ID, such as a driver's license or passport. Once you attach the photo, you simply have to hit submit. Note:  "Submitting a request for verification does not guarantee that your account will be verified," however, Instagram notes on the page. Social media influencers build and expand their business or brand through credibility and authenticity to their audience. For hackers, however, they could be seen as trophies. That’s what happened to a photographer with more than 15,000 followers on Instagram, when she had her account stolen.

A closer look into the incident revealed that the hacker got into her account through phishing. While it seemed straightforward enough, we also found that targeting popular Instagram profiles has become a modus for a certain group of Turkish-speaking hackers. And by abusing Instagram’s account recovery process, they were able to keep the stolen account even if the victim squarely followed the process.  We’ve seen cases where owners of Instagram profiles with followers between 15,000 and 70,000 were hacked and were never retrieved. The victims ranged from famous actors and singers to owners of startup businesses like photoshoot equipment rentals.

The group also engages in digital extortion. Once a victim tries to reach out to the hacker, they would be wringed to fork over a ransom or nude photos and videos to get the account back. Of course, the hackers never give it back.  Indeed, this kind of attack — targeting high-profile accounts or social media influencers — highlights our predictions for this year’s threat landscape.

Attack chain Analysis of the phishing kit revealed that the hosting system blocks requests from wget. We managed to obtain the phishing kit by spoofing a user agent.

The compromise starts with a phishing email pretending to be from Instagram. The email prods the potential victim to verify the account to get the Verified badge for the user’s Instagram profile. Note that Instagram has specific requirements and the verification process happens only after a user requests for it. Instagram doesn’t ask for credentials either.

Once the user clicks the “Verify Account” button, he will be redirected to a phishing page that asks for the user’s date of birth, email, and credentials. When we first saw these pages, they didn’t have any data validation on the input and returned the same screen even after submitting an empty form. However, they’ve since added basic data validation by not letting the user submit an empty form.

Once the attacker has access to both the victim’s Instagram profile and the email related to the account, the hacker can then modify the information needed to recover the stolen account. The victim will also be prompted to enter his email’s credentials. Once submitted, a badge notification appears, but for only four seconds. This is a trick to give users the impression that their profile has been verified.

After some time, the phishing page will be diverted to Instagram’s website. This is a common tactic in phishing. It’s likely that the victim would already be logged in with cookies, so the victim may just be diverted to his Instagram profile. Since we tested the phishing kit in a clean environment, we only got Instagram’s login page.

The hacker’s modus We looked further into these cases to learn about the hackers’ motives and how they operate. In an Instagram profile they’ve hacked, they changed its username to “natron_raze”, probably to indicate it was hacked. The email associated with the profile was also immediately modified. After some time, the account’s email was changed again. The trick here is to flood the victim with Instagram’s security emails asking if the changes were legitimate. The hacker would also try to draw the user’s attention by defacing the profile.

After the profile was compromised, other accounts immediately followed it. Some were fake profiles, while the others were either previously stolen profiles or the hackers themselves. After some time, we saw the hacker removing the hacked accounts from his follower lists, although some returned. This could probably be because the hacker realized that his modus was being monitored.

In one instance, we saw the hacker threatening to delete the account or never return the stolen profile unless the victim pays a ransom or sends nude photos or videos. The hacker also let others know he stole another account, as shown in Figure 4.

Searching for more information on “Hesap Ebedi,”(Turkish words for “account” and “eternal”) we found a forum from a hacking group discussing how to manage stolen accounts so their owners cannot get it back, even with the help of Instagram’s account retrieval process.

We reached out and disclosed our findings to Facebook and Instagram but have yet to receive a response as of this writing.

Defending against phishing The hackers in these instances lure victims into handing out personal information to get an incentive (such as a blue badge in their profile). Their mimicry of Instagram’s emails also made their malicious emails appear legitimate. Here are some of the red flags users and businesses can watch out for:

Use of domains other than the social network’s own

Dubious font styles (i.e., usage of screenshots instead of actual images)

Incorrect grammar and punctuation

Emails that ask for credentials; social networks never ask for them outside of their actual, secure login pages
