So I just finished watching the 2022 adaptation of Persuasion and like
It's a good film. It was fun and enjoyable.
It was also a TERRIBLE adaptation.
It would have worked so much better if they'd just used original characters. 'Inspired by Jane Austen' stories exist in the hundreds if not thousands. It wouldn't have been a reach to say "oh hey we took inspo from Persuasion for this new thing" and no one would have batted an eyelash and the film probably would have done better. Because it feels like an original story. It has the bare bones of Persuasion, yes. Also the character names. But so many of the characters feel so divorced from their novel counterparts that I kept forgetting that this was supposed to be Persuasion until someone got addressed by name again. Half of the motivations feel different, some of the changes to the storyline are baffling if you're making it an adaptation rather than just loosely inspiring it and the kitschy "talking to the camera thing" would have worked so much better if it had been literally any character other than Anne, like, say an original character. Also, the anachronisms would have been much more accepted in any film that was not an attempt at a Jane Austen Adaptation (see: the Bridgerton series as just one example)
If this film had been an original film that was only inspired by the plot of Persuasion it would have been well-loved. As an adaptation, I was cringing in minutes.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you sm for tagging me @lovelymasks and @strugglequill <3
How many works do you have on AO3?
16, though one is still hidden for fest.
What's your total AO3 word count?
140,294. Counting my, ahem, other/abandoned account, it's about 520k. Counting my drafts I think we've reached about a million.
What fandoms do you write for?
A Court of Thorns and Roses, Batman, and Harry Potter. I've got some WIPs for Bridgerton and Teen Wolf in my drafts as well though.
Top 5 fics by kudos?
an eye for an eye, a leg for a leg. A Batfam fic in which the Joker gets got.
drawn together. Another Batfam fic lmao, with Damian & Bruce being good at art.
yet, never, in extremity, it asked a crumb of me. Sirius & entourage saving little 5yo Harry from the Dursleys.
i watched as your life just fell apart. Charlus & Dorea Potter adopt Harry after Halloween and ensure Sirius gets a trial (with the help of Orion Black)
boy, you've been a naughty girl. Feysand Court of Nightmares smut.
Do you respond to comments?
I try to!! Sometimes I get a notification but I don't have the spoons to write out a deserving reply, but then I forget and then the next time I get a comment... it's been months and I'm too embarrassed to reply after such an enormously long wait. I also have a tendency to not reply to comments under the last chapter of multichaps until I've posted the new chapter.
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
grim-old-place, I think, even though it isn't really angsty. I enjoy writing happy endings and hopeful open endings far more. Big fan of fix-its, personally. But yeah, grim-old-place is probably the one with the angstiest ending (despite being only a drabble) because it's just so. Hopeless, I suppose?
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
an eye for an eye, hands down. Hopeful and happy, which is not something you'd expect for a angry&angsty revenge fic full of grief.
Do you get hate on fics?
I don't. Not yet, at least (I'm sure it'll happen though? It's part of posting your stuff online for the world to see). Very thankful I've not gotten any hate yet.
Once I got 'hate' on my attitude towards JKR (in which I think she's awful), but that was not on the fic itself, more on my author's notes.
Do you write smut?
Yes. It's very awkward for me. I'm not a very sexual person lol.
Do you write crossovers?
I haven't! No inspo for a good crossover yet either. I'm more an AU person (Bridgerton Prongsfoot, anyone?)
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No! [knocks on wood]
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I've only ever been asked (I think by a bot lmao), but no, no translations (to my knowledge)
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I've tried and it ended in chaos <3 The other author and I are still friends, but our schedules just didn't align at all.
What's your all-time favourite ship?
Superbat! Prongsfoot is a close-second. (The ship I've shipped the longest is Zukka I believe)
What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
I've got this time-travel Tomarry fic in my drafts that I want to completely write before posting, but idk if that'll happen lmao. There's a changed backstory to Harry that needs to be taken into account and it's just... a lot.
What are your writing strengths?
I'm very descriptive and (apparently) good at setting a vibe! It's always nice to hear that because those are, generally, my favourite bits in reading actual novels.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Sentence-structure variety, use of the passive voice, putting too much detail or far too little because I want to get to the fun bit, creating a well-rounded plot... many.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?
I've considered it before for another WIP, but... I do think it'll take a reader out of the immersiveness of a fic. I'm also not fluent in any other language than English, Dutch, and Frisian, which may mean I'll royally fuck up any sentences I write in, say, French. There's this skin that allows you to show the translation when you hover though which is cool!! If you're confident in the other language, that might be something nice to look into haha
First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter (unpublished) or Hetalia. I think I've still got a USB stick with some ancient files on there lying around.
Favourite fic you've ever written?
oh, my dear girl. It was really fun to write female Harry in a good relationship with her aunt and cousin, and I've got some really fun bits in the upcoming sequels/chapters (undecided how I'll do that still) as well.
(There's another WIP (still unposted) that I just really love, in which Harry's consciousness travels to an alternate dimension and he ends up in the body of Henry 'Harry' Potter, James' twin brother (who is younger than James by twenty minutes). Henry's consciousness is still there and they just work together, which results in a lot of chaos (with James). )
I also adore nightcourt.gov because it's just humour and silliness which you just need sometimes.
No pressure tagging (I'm so sorry if you've already been tagged or have done this!) : @v-a-l, @plecotusauritus, @the-lonelybarricade, @separatist-apologist, @velidewrites, and anyone who'd like to do this :))

@quickdeaths asked: [ cherry ] what is one thing you love about yourself? + [ canary ] do you have pets? if yes, how many and what? + [ olive ] what gives you the most inspiration for your muse(s)? + [ mauve ] give one random headcanon about your muse / one of your muses.
Colourful Interview (Munday meme) - Accepting!
Tumblr media
[ cherry ] what is one thing you love about yourself?
These questions are never my favorite because it's awkward to brag about anything in my family unless it is professional/career success, but in contrast to a lot of my extended family, I'm very determined to succeed that way but on my own terms. A lot of my family rests on their laurels, so to speak, and feels they don't really have to work hard to be well-off and successful. But I've worked my way from the ground up at my job and while I'm not satisfied with where I'm at right now (and can do much better), I can still say I did it myself.
This is in contrast to extended family members being terribly puzzled why I simply can't 'summer in Tuscany' this year, or spend all of fall exploring wineries throughout France. No, I have a full-time job with health insurance, a 401k, and limited days off but I've earned them with my own hard work. And I'm proud of that (and used zero parental connections to get hired in the first place).
And in a slightly vain love: my fashion sense is on point and my friends know that if they want my opinion, I will not sugarcoat it for them. It's not easy to dress a plus-sized body with decent fabrics, cuts meant for my size, and not have it look like a fast fashion disaster or something a retiree might wear.
[ olive ] what gives you the most inspiration for your muse(s)?
Probably the best answer is what doesn't give me inspiration for my muses? Ha. And it's mostly things like fantasy literature/TV/movies (Game of Thrones would be the obvious example, but other things similar to that), video games, and most anime/manga interpretations of royalty. While they're fun to read, they don't really help cultivate the vibe I've always wanted to write for Sonia and her family, which has always been rooted in historical fiction, biographies, documentaries, contemporary fiction of royalty and upper classes in general, and news/current events. Not that there's anything wrong with the fantasy royal route: it's just not my thing.
But otherwise here's a few things:
Books: From classics written by Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Edith Wharton to more contemporary offerings from Dominick Dunne, Julian Fellowes, Tom Wolfe, and Kevin Kwan...I read. A lot. And beyond romance novels of all sorts, rich and/or royal problems are my particular literary interest. Ironically, the reading list that the character Corinna provides Kitty Pong Mrs. Bernard Tai in China Rich Girlfriend as part of her 'Appeal to old Hong Kong money crash course' is a good start. (Mild spoiler for book series that's been out for years, but still)
TV/Movies: Split between historical dramas (of comedic and less-comedic varieties), documentaries, and contemporary dramas most of the time. Considering how both quiet luxury and mocking the super rich are both trending right now (ahead of the likely recession), it's hard not to watch things like The Menu, The White Lotus, and Succession for some inspiration. Otherwise, everything from Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, The Gilded Age, and The Great to The Royals, Gossip Girl, Elite, and The Crown is up for fair game. I watch some Asian dramas too, but often more contemporary than historical for inspo. And plenty of royal documentaries (and I'll probably be watching King Charles III's coronation live, too).
Publications: Tatler (and I've mentioned it IC, too!), Town and Country, and Vanity Fair especially. But I look over gossip magazines as well for scandal inspiration.
Royal websites and social media: Yup. These too, for a variety of royals. Great for checking out social diaries, charity ideas, etc. For the fan questions Sonia and her family are asked? I follow royal confession and shitpost accounts for inspo. I had no idea there were so many people who diligently tracked when and where pieces of various crown jewel collections are worn, but they exist.
Real life: And finally, some of my ideas/plots/headcanons come from people and situations I know and/or experience personally.
[ mauve ] give one random headcanon about your muse / one of your muses.
Going to piggyback off the last question for this, but one of my headcanons for Sonia's younger cousin Sam (Prince Samuel of Novoselic. His father, Prince Arthur, is the King's younger brother. And a duke in his own right, alongside being a giant headache for a lot of people, Sam included) is that he learned how to fly a plane before he learned how to drive a car. This was an acceptable hobby growing up for him, as it would allow him to serve in the national air force for mandatory service required of all Novosonian royal men. But mostly, he wanted to learn because he could blissfully block out all of the family stress and squabbles thousands of kilometers in the air.
In the clouds, no one cares about the royal line of succession, net worth, who's who in the peerage, who went to which school and knows which person, who runs which charity, etc.
It's just him (and an instructor, and a bodyguard), the controls, and the sky.
This headcanon and the reasoning for it are based off of someone I know very well, and while they don't know I included this in one of my OCs for Sonia's family (hell, they don't even know I RP), I'm happy to honor them in this way.
Maybe after I eventually write the whole "Royal Residences" headcanon post I should work on a Sonia's family tree headcanon post
[ canary ] do you have pets? if yes, how many and what?
Ah yes, time to pay the pet tax!
Yes, I have one cat of my own. This is Molly, aka. Princess Molly, the true ruler of the house and my life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She is a formerly feral buff tabby tuxedo girl, thus the notched ear. A rescue organization saved her from a cat colony when she was six months old, holding her own against a bunch of adult cats. I knew she was the cat for me at adoption day when she tucked herself into my arms and hissed at kittens and human children alike.
I like kittens, but I've got no interest in having human children of my own, so we really are kindred spirits.
Molly enjoys: sunny spots, windows, seafood feast, chicken feast (but only if the chunks are mushed up by me or my husband with a fork before presenting it to her. She doesn't like the pureed version: only the chunks but further pureed by hand), quiet, solitude, sitting on my belly while I read, watching the electric kettle come to a boil, my leather shoes and handbags (the higher the quality, the better to rub her face on), heated blankets, watching British dramas, grooming herself and her parents, sleep, ordering her mother and father around.
Molly dislikes: noise, anyone besides her mother and father entering the house, when her mother and/or father leave the house (they may not be coming back!), closing the bathroom door so she can't supervise shower and/or toilet time, stompy feet, salmon, turkey, coughing, sneezing, other cats, dogs, children of all sorts, people, cleaning her perch mats, when her catnip toys lose their flavor, and Amazon Alexa.

🧐
🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?
Uhh depends which ones. For Light in the Shadows yes.
It's actually funny I sort of got inspired by my research. I really wanted to push the idea of Bridgerton being diverse in numerous different areas and I thought ...why not Sophie be disabled. So I did lots of research on regency prosthetics but also watched videos about living as an amputee. One big inspo was Footless Jo on YouTube (do check her out she explains both the highs and lows of so many aspects about her life as a leg amputee).
And all of this inspired parts of Sophie's backstory , which then inspired her relationship with Simon, which the inspired the mystery element of the novel...
And yeah I sort of fell in love with my Sophie once I used the research to flesh her out. And I did it with a couple other things for the novel.
But mainly.my fanfics are for fun so I research as and when or I get inspired by info posts about stuff.
Thanks for the ask, hope that's insightful enough 😊😊

hi! no hate at all just curious, why dont you like bridgerton?
Frankly the question that baffles is how can so many people actually like it LMAO.
I watched exactly three episodes when it first came out because I saw gifs of Simon and immediately thought "oh his looks could totally be good inspo for my OC Latoya". It was that deep xD. I had seen some people talking about it here and there in my dash and it looked like a fun, brainless show to lazily binge-watch.
I remember I came to tumblr to bemoan that Simon would, predictably as it is based on a romance novel, be forced to change his mind about fathering kids (a trope I despise). Especially because I found his spiteful vow at his father on his deathbed very powerful and appealing.
Then my dash spoiled me of just how literal the forcing was when I saw discussions of the rape scene :))) and its aftermath :))). I had no desire to watch that, so I quit the show on the spot without looking back.
There are many reasons I dislike it and that are features of the show, which means I'm better off not watching it. They are basically the same reasons I don't read romance novels lmao: the classism, the misogyny, the double standards between men and women, the fetishization of virginity (in women, ofc), how even those women that want something different in life are pushed into that mould (I feel pre-emptively terrible for Eloise, btw), the built-in consent issues romance writers seem to find sooooo sexy... rme.
As I said, I understand that all these are features and not bugs of the genre, so I'm not raging against the show to change them, I'm simply not watching it and rooting for its cancellation on principle xD
There are also things I dislike about the show specificially, about the choices it makes. Their whole "colonialism, what colonialism?" approach to race is despicable IMO. The choices made with Marina's storyline show just how terrible racebending can go. The most prominent Bridgertons are unbearable people (Daphne, Anthony, Violet), and none of the main romantic couples are remotely interesting to me. The characters I could potentially find most interesting are secondary/displaced/villanized to make the Bridgertons shine. And so on.
Then you add that the more I learn about Julia Quinn as a writer and person, the more I resent that THIS is the woman who's getting rich thanks to an adaptation... fuck that show, seriously. Out of all the romance series of the world, did they seriously have to pick this one? FFS.

@ahogedetective said:  ∗ o4﹕ what is your primary source of inspiration for Sonia? (and!) ∗ 23﹕ what genre or topic do you have the most difficult time writing about ? (if ur still doing these!!)
Experience Yourself Munday Meme - It’s not Munday but I’ll still accept these! I haven’t done a proper Munday meme in awhile
Tumblr media
What is your primary source of inspiration for Sonia?
This is not the easiest question because the short answer is: a lot of things, but mostly different books, scripted TV shows and films, and documentaries.
Comics and video games don’t really give me much inspo for this blog, honestly. Mostly as I hardly ever see royalty portrayed in a way I like to emulate? While quite a lot of Sonia’s canon backstory is ridiculous, I like to put in some amount of realism when coming up with headcanons and plots for her (which isn’t every roleplayer’s cup of tea! And I respect that, it’s just my personal preference). So I look at a lot of novels featuring royalty and the upper classes, TV shows and films, and documentaries about royal families and the wealthy and powerful across the world. And admittedly, a very little bit is inspired by my own family (no, not royalty, but I get a great view into a lot of Rich People Problems in my daily life).
In no particular order and including but not limited to, I’m inspired by these:
Books:
Authors: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Edith Wharton, Jane Austen, Julian Fellowes, Tom Wolfe, Kevin Kwan, Dominick Dunne, Evelyn Waugh
Series: American Royals + sequel by Katharine McGee, Bridgerton by Julia Quinn (and prequels/sequels), Aven Quinn’s Royalty trilogy, The Royal We + sequel by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, The Royal Runaway + sequel by Lindsay Emory
Biographies: anything by Antonia Fraser, The Duchess by Amanda Foreman
Movies: Marie Antoinette, The Duchess, The Young Victoria, The Princess Diaries, The Prince and Me, insert a lot of Hallmark royalty and royal-themed movies here. I’ve seen a lot about the British royals but I watch a lot of other stuff featuring European royalty in general too!
TV shows: ITV’s Victoria, Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, Sanditon (and many other Jane Austen adaptations), Gossip Girl (mostly the OG), The O.C., The Royals, The Crown, The Great, Elite, Skins, Reign...probably more I’m forgetting.
And a lot of documentaries. If it goes into royal residences, European travel, royal history, and/or is hosted by Lucy Worsley, it’s probably provided inspo for this blog. I watch a lot on streaming, as well as on PBS and CNN.
Finally, for Sonia’s taste in horror, I watch a lot of horror movies/TV shows/documentaries as well. We don’t have exactly the same taste, but I can watch something and usually decide if I like it, if my muse likes it, or we both like it.
What genre or topic do you have the most difficult time writing about?
This is split between things I just don’t like writing and things I’ve been uncomfortable with writing about for some reason or other.
For things I just don’t like writing? Big battle/fight threads (I get bored so easily), magic/fantasy threads (urban fantasy aside, which I can sort of do when there’s paranormal investigations involved. But otherwise I’ve got no interest in high fantasy threads/plots), quick shipping (and for me, quick is subjective...but still. Only a handful of threads/interactions in and a muse wants to confess feels? It’s awkward as hell to write because Sonia usually doesn’t fall for someone, romantically at least, that fast. She’s very much a slow-burn sort of muse).
I also tend to choose not to write Non-Despair school threads or SDR2 game threads. Mostly because I hate recycling plots unless I’ve got a very good reason. It’s easier to do Non-Despair school threads if I’m writing with a muse I’ve yet to really throw Sonia with, or an OC/crossover muse.
For things I’m uncomfortable with, depending on skills or uncertainty about the mun/muse/plot?
Despair-verse threads. And this is because it can be hard to determine people’s boundaries. I’ll read rules multiple times and there’s been instances where I’ve still grossed out/offended people by how awful Sonia is as a Remnant of Despair. So I tend not to offer this, especially as a first or one of the first few interactions with a blog. Coincidentally, it’s also the easiest verse to ship Sonia ‘romantically’ in, but she’s not really in love with anyone: it’s all about power, control, pain, and pleasure. So...it’s a mess.
And finally, smut or physical intimacy threads. It’s a combination of finding the right voice and tone I want for such encounters and being able to trust and feel comfortable with the mun I’m writing these scenes with. I’ve never been fond of my sex scenes sounding like porn or having little to do with a plot or overarching character development: it just doesn’t suit me. But I’ve had an easier time writing these after watching, and reading, sex scenes that resonate with how I want to write the intimate side of Sonia’s life. A lot of what I read in RP or fanfiction either makes me laugh or cringe and I feel bad about that.
But I also need to be able to trust the mun I’m writing with. I’ve experienced situations quite often in the course of my RP hobby/career where muns projected too much of themselves into their muse, using them as validation for their own emotions and intimate desires, and that’s really uncomfortable for me. I’m engaged in real life, and I’m not okay with someone being emotionally fulfilled only by a fictional ship (sex scenes or otherwise) and misinterpreting the ship as personal feelings towards the mun. My fiancé and I are very open and communicative about the sort of writing I do and he’s okay with it, but if other muns cross that line of fictional and personal...yeah, I have to shut that down. I’ve been harassed for this in the past and now, I just tend to be very selective about who, how, when, and where I write this content with.

I was tagged by @sullypants who is much cooler than me💗
Last song: Black Car by Leon Else. Go listen to that song...it is such a vibe. To be very honest I have been listening to a lot of TSwift as of late because my friends and I are doing a March Madness style bracket of all of her songs. Her songs really do run the gamut of middling to great.
Last film: Like sully, I also just re-watched Silence of the Lambs. Other than that I have been working by way through the “Oscar movies.” Da 5 Bloods and One Night and Miami are great...and for those in the Riverdale fandom ONIM has our very own Mad Dog as Muhammad Ali...very apropos.
Currently reading: I’ve got 4 going currently. The second to last Bridgerton novel...its my last one as I already read #8. The Children’s Book by A.S. Byatt...its...slow. The Family by Mario Puzo...and a re-read of Good Omens.
Currently watching: The Great Pottery Throwdown on HBO Max. If you are a fan of GBBO I highly recommend. I am also finally getting to a Discovery of Witches as everyone who knows me tells me I will love it. I’m cautiously optimistic.
Currently craving: Inspo to finish all my WIPs, migraine relief and chocolate covered strawberries. All of those may be related.
