hi! I absolutely love your art, I was wondering if you're able to make a full-time living off of your personal work or if you do other stuff to supplement your income? I'm in my final year of art school and id love to make a living selling prints and stuff online but I know it's probably not very stable. do you have any thoughts/advice?

I never went to art school and never tried engaging with art professionally so I'm probably not the one to ask. As a side hustle it's fine it pays for some stuff like fuel and phone bills but I've intentionally not been very proactive about it (by not offering commissions or custom work for example) because I never had any desire to rely on an extremely unreliable skill, luck, & A Social Media Grindset to make a living. That's like hell to me lol. So what I make is nowhere near enough to live on, this isn't my job. When I did offer commissions it was on twitter and many years ago, because tumblr was and is a bad place to market yourself (which is why I came back.. I loathe having to be "marketable" as someone who's just a hobbyist, and having to stick to a consistent and cute furry art style for every ref sheet of someone's else character I drew turned me into the joker because furry culture discourages breaking the mold lol). So if you do go through with it, don't do it here

might sound weird to say as a person with a couple ocs who have Big Horrible Event(s) in their backstories or as a person who has like 3 ocs total bc he sucks at writing and as a person who hopes their ocs arent too Boring with [the thing im about to mention] but the thing about writing [characters] and [people] is that like.

any little thing a person experiences can take up their whole existence... its actually something "fun" to experience as i meet new ppl and do more things. My friend had something happen that she'll be talking about forever. I had several things happen last year that ill never stop talking about, some of which other ppl think werent that bad actually. In the same way I'll forever remember about the way my sister accidentally insulted me almost 10 years ago, it's really interesting and Fun to find and assign smaller things like that to characters...its really Real. some people's dealbreakers are other people's solvable problems etc etc

i've still got a lot of learning when it comes to improving ocs myself!

my best advice is try and pull character references from multiple sources, it helps fill out the character if you can pull ideals/traits/backstory elements/design details/etc and use them to fill the holes in your character.

and also just. love them. love them like you do your favorite character. love them in their story and love them in their mundane life. think about the little things that arent important or relevant to the world/story or even really to them like; do they have a messy or clean room? how would they do in a high school biology class? would they enjoy camping or would they be miserable out in the woods?

ask questions that would never really need an answer and just use that build a foundation for them.

you can apply this to both character writing and art by the way! because these details you think of shine through even if its just them .. standing there?

my criteria for a ship to be obsessed with is always "if it inspire me to think, ponder, imagine, then that's my favorite ship"

that's why i usually don't really like canon ships because most of them don't inspire me to imagine things for them, the author had already provided it for me, the audience

(doesn't mean i hate them tho, i just don't find them that interesting to me as an artist)
