Danger: Diabolik (Italian: Diabolik) is a 1968 action and crime film directed and co-written by Mario Bava, based on the Italian comic series Diabolik by Angela and Luciana Giussani.
The film is about a criminal named Diabolik (John Phillip Law), who plans large-scale heists for his girlfriend Eva Kant (Marisa Mell). Diabolik is pursued by Inspector Ginko (Michel Piccoli), who blackmails the gangster Ralph Valmont (Adolfo Celi) into catching Diabolik for him.

“CRIMINAL AND GENTLEMAN”
Luca Marinelli arrives in theater in the iconic black jumpsuit of Diabolik, the famous masked thief from the comic series, always on the hunt for jewels and in love with Eva Kant
Tumblr media
We have been waiting for his Diabolik for a long time. Two years after the end of filming, on December 16th, the film by the Manetti brothers finally arrives on the screens with 01 Distribution, starring Luca Marinelli as the masked thief. And alongside him Miriam Leone in the role of Eva Kant and Valerio Mastandrea in those of Inspector Ginko. Marinelli, who in the meantime has been shooting Le Otto Montagne by Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch, from the novel by Paolo Cognetti, tells Ciak how he worked to give body and soul to one of the greatest icons of comics.
Have you been or are you a reader of the comic?
I read it because I always found it in every house I went to as a child. There was a Diabolik everywhere and everyone knows him. I thought about it just when they told me I had landed the role. I've actually always loved comics: as a child I read Topolino, then came the passion for Dylan Dog.
What fascinates you about this character?
Many things prompted me to "find" Diabolik. Everyone knows what he is like, what he says, even if no one knows how he really speaks because comics have no voice. Everyone has a specific image of him, but I have faced him like most of the other roles in my career. They entrusted me with a character and I went there to take the things that excited me the most. I like the fact that he's so quiet and extremely intelligent, an anti-hero, but loyal, with his own code of conduct. There is an issue about the meeting between Diabolik and Eva Kant, but also one about his origins, where he tells who he is and where he comes from. We discover that he grew up on an island populated by outlaws and there is a moment when he meets a panther. A panther who terrifies everyone, but he doesn't fear it and the panther spares him. Between them there is this long moment of silence and exchange. He reminded me of my first encounter as a child with wild animals, albeit in captivity, with the lion, the panther. I remember their eyes, their breathing, sounds I had never heard before, very loud, which frightened me and fascinated me at the same time.
The name of Diabolik is inextricably linked to that of Eva Kant.
They have a very special relationship, she is a very strong woman, Diabolik is nothing without her. And it’s nice that this relationship was born in the sixties from the pen of two women, the Giussani sisters, very active also politically and involved in the campaign in favor of divorce. The figure of Eva Kant is essential, and Diabolik falls madly in love with her.  Among them there is love, friendship, complicity, sharing. They can be themselves only when they are together, while when they come out they must necessarily assume other identities. And they have this beautiful place, by the sea, to take refuge together.
You play an icon that survives decades and generations. Was it more the fear or the enthusiasm?
It was a very interesting challenge. I learned that this project was in Marco and Antonio Manetti's hands, with whom I had wanted to work for some time and whom I follow from Zora la vampira. I was delighted to approach through an audition, putting myself to the test. The audition was a beautiful moment in which I understood what amount we would work on. I brought my ideas, the Manettis had theirs, but at the base there was a common line. Of course, interpreting an icon like Diabolik, who will soon turn 60, can be frightening, also because I don't even resemble him, but it’s very stimulating to work on it. I like to approach a character with my own idea, collaborating closely with all the departments involved in the characterization.
And how did it go?
I had a great time. I went long before in Bologna, I joined the big, wonderful Manettis family, I did some body work because Diabolik has to have a nice body, and then he jumps, fights and is athletically ready. Finding the right suit was also fun. Diabolik wears one made of materials that do not exist, it’s a sort of second skin colored in black. I studied the character from different points of view, comparing myself with others, doing tests. The preparation period was really nice.
Have you seen or re-watched Mario Bava's Diabolik?
I saw some scenes, which I liked a lot, also because Bava felt really free. Diabolik in fact wears a leather jacket and jeans. I like that aesthetic, the way he moves and looks, but there was already the comic and I preferred to focus on that.
Diabolik is a thief who fights against banks and people who have made money illegally. Are we talking about social justice?
I wouldn’t go on these issues. Certainly he clashes with high society and with banks, but in reality if there is a jewel shortly after there will also be Diabolik. I have asked myself some questions about his dedication to theft and I have also given myself some answers, but I prefer to keep them to myself because it’s right for the public to come up with their own ideas.
And the work with Miriam Leone and Valerio Mastandrea?
I remember the first meetings, very funny, our readings with the Manettis in their office in Bologna. We were so excited to tell this story that we entered that world right away. Sharing the scene with them, seeing them build their characters, was a great experience. With Valerio it was very difficult to remain serious, we can't look each other in the eyes without laughing, especially when he said “hands up!” And I “damn it!”. For some takes it took a while for us to stay serious. Also with Miriam there were many funny scenes, like the one in a rubber dinghy, in Trieste, while we were running at full speed on the sea, in the dark. A great fear and so cold!  And then there are many wonderful roles, played by excellent actors, such as Claudia Gerini who you will see in a brilliant cameo. All together we have created this fantastic world.
What kind of directors were the Manettis?
They are very beautiful souls, honest people, passionate directors who love what they do and are very open to any kind of proposal. Films are made together and on the set there was a strong energy and a great spirit of sharing.

"K" stands for King... of Terror - Pt.2
«If we think about his audacity and the fear he instills especially on the aristocrats he robs (but also about the masks he uses to carry out the thefts), then he took a lot from Giussani sisters' Diabolik, who also inspired Paperinik, so much so that I could define Fantômius and Dolly Paprika as the "Diabolik and Eva Kant of Duckburg".» Marco Gervasio (HERE's the full interview if you wanna check it out... mind you it's in italian, sorry ^^")
Tumblr media
As I mentioned in the previous post, who's more akin to Diabolik (starting from his look with the very characteristic V shaped hairline) is Paperinik's source of inspiration: Fantômius, known internationally as Fantomallard.
Tumblr media
Romano Scarpa gives us a first glance at Fantômius (actually Gladstone in a costume) in "Paperinik alla riscossa" by Guido Martina.
Duckburg's gentleman thief is named after Fantômas, the serial killer and elusive criminal mastermind created in 1911 by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre, but he’s definetely more alike to Diabolik (just, not a cold blooded murderer, he’s not 😅).
Unlike Paperinik, Fantômius is a thief through and through; a masked criminal who terrorized the city of Duckburg in the 20s and who's first mentioned by Guido Martina in Paperinik's debut story "Paperinik il diabolico vendicatore" in 1969.
In Paperinik's second story, "Paperinik alla riscossa", we get to know Fantômius' girlfriend Dolly Paprika. The two are a homage by Guido Martina to the diabolical duo Diabolik/Eva Kant.
Tumblr media
Eva from Diabolik year XLV #10 and Dolly from "Dolly Paprika!"
Lady Kant, whose name comes from Immanuel Kant (philosopher loved by Angela Giussani since school), is considered one of the most beautiful women in the world and she's the perfect specular match to Diabolik. Eva Kant's character is inspired by Lady Maud Beltham, Fantomas' lover who saves him from the guillotine in a way much akin to what happens to Eva and Diabolik.
A cunning, cold hearted and skilled thief, Lady Kant appears for the first time in 1963 in Diabolik third issue "L'arresto di Diabolik" and since then she's been Diabolik's perfect partner in crime and life.
Tumblr media
Lady Kant from the back cover of Diabolik R #668
When Marco Gervasio takes up Fantômius' character and starts the creation of his personal Gervasio-verse, he gives him an entourage of secondary characters which is heavily based on Diabolik's and he focuses heavily on Dolly, delving into her story and tightening even more the laces that bound her to Lady Kant.
But Gervasio also provides Fantômius with his personal institutional nightmare: Commissioner Pinko, obvious parody of Diabolik's nemesis inspector Ginko (and who is my favorite character, I just want him to win so badly every time!!! 😭😭):
Tumblr media
Commissioner Pinko from "L'evasione di Fantomius", and inspector Ginko from Diabolik year LVII #2 back cover and played by Valerio Mastandrea in 2021 "Diabolik"
Commissioner Alcmeone Pinko is certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed and it's easy game for Fantômius to elude him. Ginko, on the other hand, is totally another league.
Appearing alongside Diabolik in the first issue of the series, he's an upright policeman and a brilliant and canny detective who can easily stand up to Diabolik's genius. We are after all talking about a character inspired by Sherlock Holmes, pipe and all.
Ginko is Diabolik's good alter ego. He's actually so similar to Diabolik some speculate they may even be related, I for instance wouldn't be surprise if we end up finding out they're twin brothers like Fantômas and Juve! After all we don't know Diabolik's real name since it's unknown even to him, and Ginko's not the inspector real name either: he changed it for... reasons.
Tumblr media
Tell me this is not a beautiful shot of commissioner Pin- err, I mean... inspector Ginko from 2022 "Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco!" (I am not in any way shamelessly fangirling over the inspector 🙃)
Needless to say, despite his bravery and intuition, Ginko never manages to arrest Diabolik because, well (let's put it bluntly) he's too fair and honest. Ginko refuses to act outside the law in any way, and stubbornly wants to rely only on the police means... though he does sometimes use some gadgets confiscated to Diabolik and puts them to use with extreme astuteness (like when he cut two masks in two and joined the two halves to create a totally new face and actually managed to fool even Diabolik himself!)
But yeah, Diabolik's the title character... he just can't be arrested for good (just think of them as Mickey Mouse and the Phantom Blot, just with the Phantom Blot as the protagonist)! Anyhow, the respect between the two runs deeply.
Tumblr media
"Hands up, Diabolik!"
Actually, Commissioner Pinko is not the first parody character of Ginko to appear on Topolino. In "Paperinik e il ritorno a Villa Rosa", our masked vigilante stumbles upon a newly appointed police inspector named Pinko "il Pallino" ("Pinco Pallino" in italian is an expression to define a random guy, I think in English it'd translate as "Joe Soap"), who might actually be a grandson of Fantômius' commissioner:
Tumblr media
Inspector Pinko "il Pallino" from "Paperinik e il ritorno a Villa Rosa"
There’s one more main character in Diabolik comics who does appear in disguise in Fantômius’ stories. I’m talking about the duchess Altea of Vallenberg, secret love of Ginko, who appears for the first time in 1964 on Diabolik #22 “Il grande ricatto”.
Tumblr media
Altea von Waller duchess of Vallenberg from Diabolik #22 and portrayed by Monica Bellucci from 2022 "Diabolik: Ginko all'attacco!"
Just like Altea, Pinko’s wife Adelaide Grimani comes from a noble family, venetian in this case. Unfortunately for Ginko and Altea, who could never be really together because of the social gap between the two (Altea’s the widow of the duke of Vallenberg, cousin of the king of Beglair), Pinko and Adelaide are happily married.
Tumblr media
Adelaide Grimani and Altea of Vallenberg: you can't buy class!
I realize I've talked more about Ginko than Diabolik or Fantômius... I'm definitely not sorry! 😛

Diabolik Predictions (from the standpoint of the Luca Marinelli Brand™)
Yay, we got a trailer, you guys! This seems like good time to finally publish a post that’s been sitting in my drafts for 10 months. So, here are my predictions based on two (2) trailers watched and zero (0) issues of the source material read.
Will Luca smoke? Yes. It takes place in the 60s or the 70s or whatever, so he gotta smoke at least once.
Will Luca sing? There’s absolutely no way he’ll sing in this movie. Maaaaybe he’ll dance with Eva but no solo dancing either. If he whistles a song to himself, I’ll die happy.
Will Luca eat? I bet he’s too badass to eat. I wouldn’t be surprised if Luca managed to sneak a bite, but I don’t think he will.
Will Luca get slapped? Not a chance. Maybe there’s a flashback to his childhood where his younger self played by a different actor gets hit by his shitty dad or whatever but there will be no slapping of Luca’s perfect face whatsoever.
Will Luca be naked? I doubt that. We’ll get a shirtless moment if we’re lucky, but that skin-tight suit will be as much as they’ll give us in terms of butt and other goodness. And even if there’s a sex scene, I don’t think we’ll see much.
Will Luca be gay? I bet they’ll try to outstraight Martin Eden in this movie. I don’t know if Luca has that much straightness in him, but I guess we’ll see.
Will Luca be a slut? Not in your typical slutty Luca way. Mickey Miranda this is not. But I bet Inspector Ginko is gonna be hella thirsty for him!
Lucameter: there’s no way I’ll be able to give this movie more than 45/100
In terms of more in-depth analysis, I’m willing to bet on daddy issues whilst there’ll be no addiction of any kind because Diabolik is too cool for that, and his repression will be your typical toxic masculinity shit.
Listen, do I want a dude dressed in a gimp suit to hella represent? Yes, obviously. Do I think he’s gonna be a poor man’s Batman instead? Also yes.
If you get to see this wonderful film before me, please feel free to PM me and tell me what I got right and what I got wrong! December can’t come soon enough!

The Heroes, Future Season Picking
maxw@jcogginsa @skjam, @maxwell-grant
As it would appear discussion of Season One has come to a halt for the moment, this thread is for discussing Season Two.
Some ideas proposed thus far...
By @jcogginsa:
As I said previously , my idea for this one was to have the principal characters come together for Keane’s funeral before getting sucked into the season’s plot. To expand on that, what I think should happen here is that Keane was familiar with several other great detectives. After they leave his funeral, they get sucked into what looks like an Agatha Christie style whodunnit, which is eventually revealed to be something of a more supernatural flavor. The big name of this season could be an aged Sherlock Holmes, but if we don’t go with that, Watson would be a fun pick.
- General Zaroff, the antagonist of ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ sinks a cruise ship, which he believes Doc Savage is aboard, believing that Savage will survive and make it to Zaroff’s island, where he can hunt him for sport. Unfortunately, he’s misinformed, because the Savage aboard the ship is actually Patricia Savage, not Clark. She, along with other pulp heroes who were aboard, then have to deal with Zaroff. Possibly with the Wolfman and Tarzan involved
- The aforementioned “The Shadow vs Lovecraft” season. This would be a later season, since I think it’d be good if Fu Manchu had a more sizeable role in it, to show that while he’s a bad man, he’s not a “wants to end the world” kind of Bad man. Additionally, as a late act twist, I think it’d be nice for a Golden Age flavor of Superman to show up, as he is thematically a foil to Lovecraft
- While most of the seasons would be stand alone, I did have an idea for a loosely connected Trilogy of seasons featuring Sun Koh, the Nazi Doc Savage. One Season would deal with a search for Atlantis, and end with Sun Koh arriving in the present day. Then the season after that would featuring Conan battling Sun Koh in the distant past, and then the season after that would see Sun Koh suffering his final defeat at the hands of Doc Savage.
- A season set on Mars, featuring John Carter attempt to stop the Martian Invasion from War of the Worlds from getting launched
By @krinsbez:
-News of the Underworld: Belgian boy reporter Tintin is back in New York City, doing a ride-along with Justice, Inc. when they’re called in to investigate a gang that’s been robbing museums. But then their leader becomes convinced that one of the artifacts is posssesed by a demon and is talking to him (I think it should be ambiguous if he’s delusional or not), and begins planning something more grandiose than mere thefts, the Avenger calls upon…not sure. Someone with knowledge of mysticism and the occult, but not so much that no ambiguity exists.
-Skull and Crosswinds: In the midst of WWI, the 20th Phantom discovers that Robur the Conqueror’s ahead-of-his time flight technology has fallen into the hands of the European branch of the Singh Brotherhood, who plan to use the war as cover to plunder the continent from the skies with impunity. To stop them, he must somehow convince G-8 and Hans Von Hammer to work together.
-Black As Night And Red All Over: In ‘70s NYC, Shaft, Blade, and Vampirella join forces to defeat Blacula. Given the pun of the title, I thought about throwing in Kolchak, but A: I don’t know that much about him ATM, and B: What little I do know suggests he lives elsewhere?
Comments by @maxwell-grant:
Funny you mentioned wanting to bring Superman into the “Shadow vs Lovecraft” season, because I’ve been tinkering with my own Shadow - Superman crossover idea for a while now, that whole text I wrote about crossing The Shadow with Lovecraft spawned out a Shadow meets Superman text I haven’t finished yet.
The inclusion of Fu Manchu though? I’ll definitely keep it in mind. Although The Shadow, Fu Manchu, and the Cthulhu Mythos are such massive properties, such quintessential pillars of pulp fiction as well as fiction in general, that Superman’s inclusion might be either too much, or perhaps the right ingredient to pulling it all together. Definitely something I have a lot of ideas for but maybe better saved for later.
“The Most Dangerous Game” starring pulp heroes definitely sounds fun though. I think one of the things I most enjoyed about these posts is that they got me to think and write about characters I’d never given much thought prior. I’d definitely like to do more with further obscure choices.
@krinsbez
Here’s an idea for that Tintin x Justice Inc crossover. When The Avenger and Tintin investigate museum robbers who run afoul a mystical artifact that might be driving them to more sinister plans, they need someone who’s familiar enough with the occult and also with historical artifacts, and so they call…Indiana Jones. Benson would have preferred calling someone else but they are in a hurry and Jones was easy to reach. Indy wants absolutely nothing to do with the dead-faced creep who names his knives and the little kid running around in a trenchcoat and demonic artifacts and whatnot, but then he gets involved and goes along complaining about being dragged into another supernatural bullshit adventure, as usual.
Comments by @skjam:
The really obvious proto-Superman for pulp stories is Hugo Danner from “Gladiator” by Philip Wylie.  He dies at the end of the book, but this can easily be handwaved; perhaps a Snake Plissken-like “I heard you were dead” from everyone who recognizes him?
“Most Dangerous Game” with Pat Savage?  If you want to make things really tough for Zaroff, team her up with Jane Clayton, Lady Greystoke.  By the third Tarzan book, Jane’s the second-best person in the world at jungle survival.  (She drops back to third once their son reaches his teens.)
Additional comments by @jcogginsa:
Been thinking more about the great detective pitch I made, and I think good characters to use for that season would be Sar Dubnotai (who I only know of because of Maxwell Grant’s Pulp tarot), and Inspector Ginko from Diabolik
Additional comments by @maxwell-grant:
@skjam I think Hugo Danner is an interesting enough character that, while I do have some plans for him, I wouldn’t just use him as a Superman analogue.
@jcogginsa Sar is definitely a great choice, in fact it’s a logical choice to have him enter the scene as a response to Ascott Keane’s murder, since Sar is an occult detective as well, far older, more powerful and resourceful than Keane, and generally being a far more interesting character too.
I haven’t yet had a chance to read the original Sar Dubnotal stories but something I really enjoyed about the Tales of the Shadowmen stories I’ve read with him is that they emphasize him being a psychologist on top of everything else, so he lends himself into scenarios where he uses his magic to help characters dig into their pasts and deal with their trauma and so on, which is definitely something that sets him apart from other pulp heroes, even those with mystical powers.
The fact that he can speak with the dead could also allow us to include characters from different time periods. For example, maybe Holmes did die a while before the story began, but Sar has been receiving visions and guidance from Holmes in the afterlife that sets him on a trip to America where he has to help some of his detective friends deal with the aftermath of the murder of an American occult detective. That way, not every character we want to include outside of their time period needs to be immortal (although Sar may be, as even in his original 1910 stories he was hinted at being much older than he appeared, and now he’s going to be appearing in the 1930s presumably unchanged).
Sar can very well serve as the link that binds different characters and storytelling elements together.
Some thoughts of my own.
-On Hugo Danner: I have to agree with @maxwell-grant that just using him as a Superman analogue is not a good idea, not least because, asides from powers they are very different characters. Not sure using Superman is the best idea either, since he’s as close as you get to a bright shining line where Pulp Heroes stop and Super Heroes begin (given that there are plenty of superheroes who are 100% Pulp Heroes as far as I’m concerned, it’s not much of a line, but still)
-On what to do next: Obviously, I’m partial to my own ideas, but of @jcogginsa‘s ideas, I like the Detectives or Most Dangerous game one’s best. Which sentiment appears to be shared by the rest of you, so let’s go for it.
-On Detectives: Unfortunately, I’ve never even heard of Sar before, so I’m not confident of my ability to do stuff with him.
-On Most Dangerous Game: I love the concept, but I can’t buy Gen. Zaroff by himself as being a legitimate threat when Tarzan is involved? (as far as I’m concerned. kidnapping Jane is a form of suicide)

Happy birthday, Commando Satsuko Kaneari!
My apologies for not drawing anything for the occasion as I could not settle on an idea and I feared not being able to capture your beauty. Hopefully, one day, we will see you in a samba outfit riding police cars to chase Joker in full animation. But for now, we can dream.

Showdown in the Dark Night! Joker vs Shadow CH1
Tumblr media
Notices!!
"Tonight, I'll come to take 'Komachi's Gilded Chrysanthemum' from the Cape Gardens! Phantom Thief Joker"
"On the 𝒩𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝑜𝒻 𝒟𝒶𝓇𝓀𝓃𝑒𝓈𝓈 when the moon has perished, I shall come together with 𝐵𝓁𝑜𝑜𝒹𝓎 𝑅𝒶𝒾𝓃 to steal away the 𝐸𝓉𝑒𝓇𝓃𝒶𝓁 𝒯𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓈𝓊𝓇𝑒 known as 'Komachi's Gilded Chrysanthemum'! Phantom Thief Shadow Joker"
<1> Night Raid
It was a moonless night. A cold wind blew in from the ocean, and other than the sound of leaves on the trees rustling, the night forest quietly held its breath.
Within this sprawling forest atop a precipitous cliff, a house stood deserted. This grand house, a relic of Japan's Showa era, was now uninhabited. Since the death of its owner, a major financier, it was managed by only a few members of staff. The master of the house was famous for being an eccentric who hardly went out, but also happened to be a noted botanical collector, and in the courtyard grew many rare kinds of flowers. This courtyard, flush with flowers from around the world, was spread out over a wide area in the vast forest and endowed with a multitude of diversions to entertain the visitor: a large pond, bridges, a greenhouse, and a garden maze formed from tall hedges, among others.
The very centerpiece of the courtyard was a donut-shaped hanging garden, fixed around the great manor like the rings of Saturn. It was neatly divided into twenty-four beds and engineered so that one could enjoy flowers in season at any time. Looking out from the manor, one would see the ocean beyond the hanging garden. After the owner died, the courtyard was opened to the public, and it came to be known as the "Cape Gardens".
Tonight, this usually tranquil garden was under high alert. The red lights of numerous police cars lit up the entire garden, sowing it with an uneasy ambiance. The police searchlights positioned on the manor's roof smoothly circled the courtyard as if tracing an image, at intervals illuminating the officers on duty. They rigorously scanned the area with an anxious look on their faces.
One man watched them from the from the third floor of the house. He wore a custom moss green uniform on his short and stout body, and long hair flowed out over it from the back of his head. A certain look of determination filled his face as he intently looked out over the garden, arms folded.
The manor's clock tower bell struck once. Bong!
"11:30, is it..." said the man, looking at his wristwatch. The bell in this house rang the time at the hour and struck once at the half hour.
A door banged open behind the man. "Inspector!"
He turned around to see two officers run in. The first was a sharp-eyed long-haired violette, the other a short blonde.
"Oh, Ginko-chan, Momo-chan."
"He's arrived."
"At last!" The man's glinted dimly. "Fu fu fu, this is the end of the line. This time I'll so arrest him!" he exclaimed loudly.
The man's name was Oniyama Dokusaburou. He was a veteran officer belonging to the Metropolitan Police Department's Anti-Phantom Thief Unit, with twenty-five years on the force. He originally handled robberies and fraud cases, but his career changed completely with the appearance of a certain man. His name...
Phantom Thief Joker.
Nicknamed the "Miracle Maker", Joker was the century's greatest phantom thief. He came and went as he pleased, was smart as a whip, and could change his appearance to anyone else's. He stole treasure like smoke and escaped like the wind. Though he was still young, his almost magical methods were indeed miraculous.
Oniyama had first encountered Joker in a certain caper, in which he was utterly bested and the treasure was stolen. Ever since, Oniyama had dedicated his own career as a police officer to catching Joker, or so he swore. Now wherever Joker stirred up trouble, Oniyama was sure to come along after him. Joker was a world-trotting thief, and while Oniyama could not chase him overseas at a moment's notice, he was always in charge of cases involving him in Japan. This time, he had rushed to the scene upon receiving a notice from Joker threatening to steal the Gardens' "Komachi's Gilded Chrysanthemum".
"Today's the day I'll catch him, for sure..." Oniyama said as he did before every caper. To exaggerate a little, chasing after Joker was Oniyama's reason for living. Oniyama had vowed that he would put Joker in handcuffs himself. This time, he looked out onto the field with more resolve than ever. The reason being...
As he thought to himself, he heard the squeaking sound of wheels from beyond the door. A young man in a wheelchair entered the room.
"Heya, long time no see, Oniyama-han."
"It's been a while, Hayami Kyoutarou-kun."
"There's a buncha big-name officers here again. Halfa loaf's better 'en none, so that's fine and dandy. But if we can't catch our key man Joker with all 'ese heads put together, what's tha point?" Hayami teased in his Kansai accent, grinning at Oniyama.
Frosty eyes set in a pale face shone below his neat and even bowl-cut black hair. He was dressed in a blue blazer, a properly-tied striped necktie, and black slacks. It was the uniform of the school that Oniyama's daughter would likely attend in the future as well, the private Cross Academy high school division.
Hayami was a genius high school detective famous in the area. He solved cases while sitting in his wheelchair with a mind so keen that his IQ was rumored to be 300. He could figure out and expose culprits and tricks on the spot with only the slightest amount of evidence. Oniyama had singled Hayami out and requested that he help in this investigation.
"Let me thank you for coming out this far. You were a great help when you last handled a Joker case."
"Yep, was that the recent Kubiki Shrine affair, or the instrument inheritance case? The nitwit police kept chasin' a phony balloon Joker that time, I recall."
"Say that again? The nitwit police?" The long-haired officer beside Oniyama took a step forward. Officer Ginko was a former F1 racer and speed freak, hence she was infamously referred to as the department's "devil chaser". Both her driving and disposition were a little on the wild side, and she could be short-tempered.
"Ha ha ha, pardon. I can't say I didn't feel like a nitwit myself. Joker ended up spoiling the trick. It was a sour case fer the both of us." Hayami took a breath and turned his gaze toward the center of the room. "So that's what Joker's got his mark on this time?"
"Yes, that's right."
There was a small glass case in the middle of the large open room that formerly served as a salon. Within it was a beautiful hairpin, sparkling gold. It was ornately crafted, a chrysanthemum decoration adorning the end. Each petal was made of gold, and a brilliantly-shining diamond was set in the center.
"Is that Komachi's Gilded Chrysanthemum?"
"Correct. Apparently it's the most valuable item in the deceased owner's collection. As the name suggests, it's a chrysanthemum flower made of gold, and it's said that only the historical poet Ono no Komachi* could complement its beauty."
"Hmm... Inspecter, could ya let me see it?"
The blonde officer opened the case for him, and Hayami gently took the hairpin in hand. He examined it intently.
"It's really pretty, especially this diamond!" The blonde officer Momo was fascinated by the hairpin's focal gem. The white diamond was unusually large. It had a brilliant cut that made it glint at any angle. It was truly worthy of being a treasure targeted by Joker.
Once Hayami had carefully put the hairpin back in its case, Ginko and Momo returned to patrolling the area. It was only Oniyama and Hayami in the salon now. Hayami turned back to Oniyama and broke the silence.
"By the by, Oniyama-han, I hear you'll be losin' charge if ya don't jail Joker this time, is that right?"
"Mmh..." Oniyama faltered. Yes, Oniyama's boss had given him an ultimatum: "If you don't get results this time, I'm taking you off any future Phantom Thief Joker cases." Seeing as he hadn't made any headway, he was in no position to make excuses. As a last resort, Oniyama used every connection he had within the police to assemble a host of strong, trained officers and equip them with new arsenal. Just to be on the safe side, he requested Hayami's assistance. "That... doesn't concern you." Oniyama answered, looking away.
"Come on, don't be so touchy. Yer just up against a cliff, Inspecter. I had some trouble with Joker not long ago now in Singapore."
"What, you mean last month's incident? You were there?" Last month, Phantom Thief Joker had shown up in Singapore and snatched a gem called the "Black Opal". It was another piece from the collection of this manor's owner.
"Yep. One little slip and I let Joker get away. This time I'll nab 'im for sure..." Hayami clenched his fist. A strong light sparked in his cold eyes, and Oniyama didn't miss it. I can trust this boy...
Oniyama held his hand out straight. "I appreciate your cooperation today, Hayami Kyoutarou."
"Right on, ya can count on me. Let's catch Joker, the both of us!" The two exchanged a firm handshake, man to man.
As the pair were having a sincere moment with each other, what exactly was the all-important Phantom Thief Joker doing...?

"Waaaaaaaaaaah! Craaaaaaaaap!" A scream rang through the giant airship Sky Joker as it advanced through the night sky.
A boy in ninja wear hurriedly ran into Joker's room. "W-What happened, Joker-san!?" shouted the ninja boy, his round golden eyes opened wide. A blue hood and metal plate covered his forehead, and he was clad in ninja gear. There was a small katana fit to his stature at his back. It was Joker's assistant, Hachi. "Joker-san?" Lying on the bed across from Hachi was Joker.
The century's greatest phantom thief, the miracle maker Phantom Thief Joker! Bane of millionaires around the world, the boy who charmed countless with his bombastic conduct, always wearing a bright red suit... except for right now.
Joker was wearing a set of sunny yellow pajamas and a little triangular nightcap. His loud silver hair was bedraggled and sticking out in every direction. His drowsy eyes were wide open, and of all things, there was a trace of drool at the end of his mouth. "I messed up bad~~~! Hachi~~~~!" Joker whined at Hachi. Giant tears blurred his eyes.
"What happened!? Did something major..."
"The reservation period for my game... ended thirty minutes ago..." Joker dropped his shoulders and mumbled.
"Huh?" Hachi blinked in surprise.
"Big Brawl Battle Smasher 3's reservation was until 11 o'clock! When I just checked the site, the limited first edition was on order stop~~~!"
Hachi exhaled. "Sigh... is that all?"
"Is what all!" Joker clung to Hachi, voice rising. "Yeah, I could buy the regular download version, but that won't work! It won't have the passcode included in the limited edition's packaging! Without that, I can't get the Rainbow Hammer that I missed in 2~~!" Joker blabbered on like an addict, grasping and shaking the dumbfounded Hachi's lapel. "Waaaaaah! I messed up~~! Treasure's one thing, but once I miss a game's first edition, I can't get it any other time~~~~!" Joker exclaimed and fell flat on the bed, starting to blubber.
"Is that really worth crying over..." Hachi watched in annoyance, then Joker suddenly stopped moving.
"Hachi."
"What is it?"
"...I'm not going... to today's job."
"Whaaaaat!?" Hachi yelled the loudest he had today. "What are you saying, Joker-san! You've already sent advance notice! We're almost right by the Gardens!"
"I don't have any motivation... I can skip just this once."
"Wha! No you can't! You absolutely can't skip work for a lousy game!"
"What do you mean, lousy! It's important to me!" Joker raised his head and shouted.
"Work is more important!"
"No! There's nothing more important in this world than reserving video games!" Joker clenched his fists and shouted forcefully, the loudest he had this year.
"Are you kidding me..." Hachi yielded to his stubbornness and dropped his shoulders. "Then are you okay with losing your match with him?"
"Him...?" Joker's eyes lit up once he remembered him.

BAMMMMM! An explosive sound rang through the salon that Oniyama and Hayami were in. The rumbling accompanied the walls blowing apart, its fractured pieces scattering across the floor. A uniform cloud of dust rose up, instantly turning the room grey.
"Is it Joker!?"
"Here at last!"
Oniyama stood with his back to the Gilded Chrysanthemum's case. Hayami quickly steered his wheelchair and came to a tight halt besides Oniyama. As they watched their surroundings cautiously, a faint silhouette came into view beyond the dust. The shadow of a boy with a silk hat and flapping cape...
Just as Oniyama was about to shout "Joker!", a harsh voice came from the dust. "Ha ha ha ha! I'm taking the treasure!"
"Wha!?" It wasn't Joker's voice.
"Bloody Rain!"
Just as he thought he saw something glint in the dust, a red beam shot across and grazed Oniyama's arm. The moment he bent back reflexively, the Gilded Chrysanthemum's case exploded. The beam had hit its target.
Bam! went another loud noise, breaking the reinforced glass. The glass fragments scattered, and Oniyama immediately covered his eyes. This was a poor move. The moment he looked away, the shadow in the dust ran past Oniyama and took the Gilded Chrysanthemum. "Ha ha ha ha ha! I've got it!"
Oniyama shouted at the triumphantly laughing shadow. "You aren't Joker, are you! You're...!"
"Yeah, that's right. I'm the black shadow that paints over the light, arising from the 𝒹𝒶𝓇𝓀 𝑜𝒻 𝒹𝒶𝓇𝓀𝓃𝑒𝓈𝓈, Shadow Joker!" The dust gradually cleared to reveal a man standing still.
His silhouette was the exact image of Joker's. His silk hat, suit, and necktie were all matched in purple, and a black cape hung from his back. In contrast to Joker's flashy appearance, Shadow had an aura as cold and dark as his name. His shifty golden eyes hid an evil gleam deep within. His spiky cyan hair shone mystically.
Shadow was pointing his black umbrella at Oniyama. It was his weapon, Bloody Rain. "Too bad for you I wasn't Joker. I'm taking the treasure!"
Tumblr media
"You think you can..." The moment Oniyama tried to approach, a beam fired from the umbrella at his feet. The beam hit and burned the floor in front of Oniyama's toes black.
"The next one will hit you. I'm not as soft as he is."
"Mmmh..." Oniyama gritted his teeth in frustration.
Yet a quiet giggle came from Hayami beside him. "Kukuku... yer as rowdy as ever."
"...Who the hell are you?" Shadow glared at Hayami.
"I'm struck that th' phoney'd turn up brazenly after I humbled 'im in Singapore."
"Singapore...? Then you're the lout who set up that trap!" Shadow stiffly turned his umbrella tip toward Hayami.
But Hayami was unperturbed and began to speak placidly. "Yep, that's right. But to level with ya, ya weren't my target. I haven't got any interest in Joker's phoney."
"Wha... I'm not a phoney!"
"Fu fu fu, I'm just callin' it as it is. Just like yer name, yer Joker's shadow, a bona fide phoney veiled by darkness."
"Quit saying that! I'll kill you right here and now! Bloody Rain!" The piercing shot fired at Shadow's command and sped toward Hayami. Hayami quickly moved his wheelchair out of the way and narrowly evaded the beam.
"Ya won't hit me that easy. My wheelchair can move faster than a guy can run!"
"You cheeky little-!" Shadow shot several more beams at Hayami. But true to his word, Hayami's wheelchair avoided the beams, moving around at immense speed to dodge the attack. "Scamp...!" Shadow continued to fire in his rage, and so did not realize the presence rushing in behind him.
Clink! A dull pain spread through Shadow's arm. "...!" When he looked, the hand holding his umbrella was clapped in irons.
"Shadow Joker, you're so under arrest!" Grasping the other end of the taut rope tied to the handcuff was Oniyama.
"You blackguards... watch this! 𝒰𝓃𝒹𝑒𝓇𝓌𝑜𝓇𝓁𝒹 𝒮𝓂𝑜𝓀𝑒!" Shadow angrily shifted his umbrella to the other hand and struck it forcefully against the ground. A smokescreen immediately billowed out from the umbrella tip.
"!?" The smoke spread sooner than Oniyama and Hayami could express their surprise. It quickly filled the entire room.
"I'm not letting the treasure go!" Shadow cut the rope on the handcuffs. The next moment, there was the sound of a window breaking.
Oniyama shouted into his radio. "Ginko-chan, Momo-chan, so arrest all suspicious persons around the manor!"
"Roger, Inspector!" Ginko responded, and the radio cut out.
Oniyama ran out before the thin smoke had cleared completely.
"Inspecter!"
"Joker will come for sure. After the treasure, that is!" Oniyama shouted and ran out of the room.
"..." Left behind, Hayami squeakily wheeled his seat over to the broken glass case and looked down at it. "Fu fu fu, this is riveting. The phoney stole a phoney..." Hayami's mouth curved into an audacious smile.
