had a dream where some warhammer-lookin person-converted-to-machine delivered a notice to a normal human engineer that they’ve been offered a huge amount of money to be converted over for some fancy company, only to watch them light it on fire with the rocket engine they were in the middle of servicing. engineer (played by the satisfactory engineer) didn’t say anything, though, so the drone very politely said ‘thank you for considering this offer’ and left.

it went back the next day to collect an official answer and found the workshop being torn apart by some much more heavily armed machines, then panicked about its client, ghosted into the ship that was still parked there from the day before, and started blasting the entire room with fire from the engines. engineer, who was inside a hidden hatch on the ship, popped out to see why they were suddenly moving around, saw their garage engulfed in fire and pulled the drone’s idle body to safety. they started ripping out and destroying the branded network components, causing the drone to reboot and shut off the ship.

now unaware of the chaos, drone asked engie ‘hi! how can i help you today?’ and was answered by gunfire from the other machines (can’t get in trouble for damaging property if the property attacked you first). engineer, who had not yet said a single word, shouted ‘FLY. ANYWHERE. NOW’ at the drone and it reconnected to the ship then happily launched them through the garage door.

they coasted around silently for a bit in the barely-working and now very-shot-up ship while engineer finished taking drone’s remaining brain parts off The Cloud, and did sort of a video game title crawl with some music and general stage-setting as they drifted past various little micro scenes. eventually it transitioned into ‘game graphics’ as the ship broke down and stuff got more vague.

as they abandoned ship engineer asked drone if it remembered what its name was, and they casually talked about that while engineer led the way towards an underground safehouse. drone felt very strange being cut off from The Cloud, and was told to expect some withdrawal symptoms now that its human side wasn’t being suppressed any more. there was some exposition about finding out who wanted to Disappear engineer and why, and the player could do a tutorial on moving around as drone while the other characters chatted.

then the gameplay was like. you would deploy on a mission with player one as drone and an optional player two as engineer, with drone able to possess & operate ‘unintelligent’ machines and engineer able to hijack ‘smart’ ones & fix things. levels revolved around getting them to work together to solve puzzles and remove obstacles, including things like engineer repairing whatever vehicle drone is possessing while they’re actively trying to escape a gunfight.

from there it moved into this mystery over who the engineer used to be and drone trying to remember who it was and there being dregs of a plan to topple that company from the inside out because it had replaced all its people with machines and was stuck in an unchecked recursive loop that had lost track of why it was trying to keep itself running... lots of action movie shit i guess.

really really annoyed i can’t easily share that opening image, though, cuz it was fucking STRONG and i clearly remember it. engineer took the buyout notice from drone, held it above their head without even looking at it, then slapped their makeshift diagnostic console to turn on a rocket engine just inches above them to vaporize it. power move...
