youtube
The entire discussion on Japanese pop music is basically me paying a tribute to two of the greatest geniuses there, i.e. Takahashi and Sakamoto. Actually, I do mention latter a lot on this blog and I did like a lot of eulogies to him, though one that made me cry was by his ex-wife, Akiko Yano. Her tweet showed a deep affection she continued to have for him and the post was also a reference to a famous moment from one documentary. Moreover, they did collaborate on many works together with Mr. Sakamoto also calling his peers from Yellow Magic Orchestra to join him there. However, Akiko Yano did bring them to another sonic plain. Sure, you can notice the ethos, but she does have a more off-kilter vibe. Look, I didn't describe her as a prolific Japanese version of Kate Bush for nothing.

Manga Review: Grand Blue Chapter 83
Grand Blue went on a short hiatus due to Kenji Inoue’s health issues. It seems that all is well because the series is back with chapter 83! We are delighted to hear of the apparent recovery! This series was incredibly missed, even if it was only away for a month. Now we are back o the ridiculous drinking, comedy, and fanservice we have come to love. This time, our protagonist Iori gets caught…

Summary:
In the distant past, the Guardian of the Milky Way galaxy named Lanancuras began to harbor a desire for more power. Because of his connection to the galaxy, he was able to absorb parts of planets and add them to his strength. As a result, he began invading the worlds he was assigned to protect. In the wake of his destruction, a following of creatures from across the galaxy pledged allegiance to Lanancuras and became known as the Kadrians. Taking notice of his ever-growing power and followers, the other Celestial Guardians confronted him; however, he had become too powerful, and they were defeated. Unable to subdue Lanancuras, the Celestial Guardians each gave up a part of their power and combined it into a single new Guardian, Mushra. In a final desperate attempt, they used Mushra's core by transforming it into a powerful card with which to seal Lanancuras in a prison. The prison was created from the remains of planets that had suffered under Lanancuras' tyranny. Because planets are themselves large beings, their combined strength (along with the power of the card) was able to restrain him. Thus Lanancuras was successfully sealed in a large meteorite.
The meteorite was sent off into the galaxy to be sealed forever. Meanwhile, the way Lanancuras had increased his strength had consequences on the planets of the Milky Way On Earth, around the 22nd century, it was in the shape of a virus that merged with human DNA and destroyed the humans that way. In order to eliminate the virus, scientists worked on combining human DNA with the DNA of animals and other creatures immune to the effects. They succeeded and created a sentient race known as Enterrans (a race of engineered Earthlings) which are based on humans, insects, reptiles, birds, sea creatures, wild beasts, and phantom beasts. Eventually, a cure was found and the human race survived.
However, due to Lanancuras' influence, the Enterrans fought their human creators as well as the robots that worked with the humans, driving the human race to a near extinction state. Luckily, a scientist named Dr. Daigo Tatsuro placed his 4-year-old daughter Yakumo in a sleep chamber in hopes that she would save the human race and find the human sanctuary Shinzo and bring peace back to Earth which was then renamed to Enterra. When the meteor that Lanancuras was imprisoned in struck Earth during the earlier parts of the Human-Enterran War, its fragment had struck an infant Yakumo giving her abilities that she would later discover.

Sakuragi's Twilight
(A "Slam Dunk" fanfic. "Slam Dunk" is by Inoue Takehiko)
It is already four in the afternoon, and old man Sakuragi walks into a newly renovated half court. He takes a look around and sees that there are benches than it had been during his youth--at least, that is how he remembers it. He sometimes ventures into the half court, for he is also busy even though he is past seventy years of age.
He takes a seat at one of the benches and looks at the sky. The delicate clouds forming above reminds him of the scaly pattern of the taiyaki. The sky behind the clouds boasts of the color like apricots, and the golden sunshine shining on him reminds him that dinner is almost ready, and it will be bedtime soon. Sakuragi takes his gaze off the sky and watches the high school boys play basketball. He remembers his time at one half court, and in the real basketball arena, but those memories are so long time ago. And yet, he still remembers them. As he fondly looks at one boy doing a three-point shot, he smiles and daydreams back to his youth.
Life has a twist for him, he reminisces. In high school, he suffered a back injury just when he was starting to love basketball. After rehab, he practiced even more and got better with it, enough for him to be captain in his senior year (with bespectacled Ishii as vice captain. Kinda like how a gorilla was captain, and a glasses-wearing sempai was vice captain). In college, he continued to play for a local college (in which he got into, fortunately, because his crush then, Akagi Haruko, tutored him after Shohoku's taste of the Interhigh until their senior year).
He remembered that Rukawa played basketball professionally on the national scene; Mitsui became an assistant coach for Shohoku under Coach Anzai after college; Miyagi and Ayako left the basketball world for mundane adult jobs and eventually married; Gori, Kiyota, Uozumi, and Takasago opened up a zoo with lots of monkeys; and Kogure became a geneticist in South Korea. And he? Well, he left the basketball world after college because he and the gundan decided to try their hands on something useful, like making bread. Oddly enough, the troublemakers of Wakou Junior High excelled in being small-time entrepreneurs, each having his own bakery. Only Noma took his bakery to a whole new level and opened several branches, mainly in Kanagawa and Osaka.
And his dear Haruko? Let's just say it was not Rukawa who got to be Sakuragi's love rival. It was Shoyo's Fujima Kenji. And how did it all happen? Fujima and Haruko met in university in Tokyo. They briefly dated, but as Fujima's graduation drew near, they broke up because Fujima realized he wanted to focus on his career. Haruko became so heartbroken and retreated back to Kanagawa, where she transferred in a university there and maintained a good friendly relationship with Sakuragi, who was her "living diary." But as fate would have it, Sakuragi and Haruko became lovers, and they married.
Currently, Haruko is at home, making dinner, while Sakuragi ventures into the court, daydreaming of his past after a long day at the bakery.
Just then, a shrill voice of a young man calls out to him, a little bit with respect, a little bit naughty. Sakuragi slowly turns around to see a high school boy with tan skin and broccoli hair. The teen is waving excitedly at him. The boy's features melts Sakuragi's heart because it so reminded him of how his best friend Ryo-chin looked like in high school. And yes, that boy is Ryota and Ayako's grandson. Among the basketball friends in Kanagawa, the only ones he maintained friendship to this day are Miyagi, Mitsui, and Kainan's Muto, who was his classmate in college. He knew Rukawa eventually retired at forty-nine and left for America because it was in the news. But for other friends and rivals? He had no idea. Social media is still prevalent after 2045, but despite the presence of it, Sakuragi is not adept to it and is not willing to learn.
"Oyaji!!" the teenager calls out excitedly as he runs towards the old man.
Sakuragi smiles at the young teen and beckons him to sit beside him. By now, the teen complains that Sakuragi is hogging all the space on the bench because of his wide girth. Sakuragi remembers how he used to make jolly good fun of his former coach, Coach Anzai, for being round and fat. And yet, at that time, Coach Anzai enjoyed Sakuragi's company, like a grandpa to his grandchild. It turned out that Sakuragi's metabolism slowed down in his forties, so he gained weight like his former coach. Also, long gone were his red-head days, for he traded it with natural-colored hair. And now, with white, neatly combed hair of old age. Unlike his old coach, Sakuragi still has good eyesight.
"Oyaji, did you bring some bread for me?" the high schooler asks excitedly.
"I didn't bring one," Sakuragi replies affably. "Gomen ne, Hiroshi-kun."
Hiroshi, for that is the boy's name, glares at him and pouts before he puts his palm defiantly at Sakuragi's round chin to start jiggling his fats. The young teen, afterwards, jiggles Sakuragi's massive stomach after abusing the fatty chin.
"Oyaji! You should have brought one for me!"
Sakuragi just enjoys the way the teen jiggles his fatty assets. This must have been the feeling that Coach Anzai felt before. As Ryota's grandson complains, Sakuragi only laughs the way his old coach used to.
"Ho-ho-ho-ho!!"
