How to Design Your Blog Header for Free

I think many times when people consider starting a blog, they shy away because they’re afraid it’s going to cost them an arm and a leg. I have had friends of mine think I spent thousands for a web designer. That is SO far from the truth. While I do invest in certain things for my blog, a web designer is not one of them. While I did pay for stock photo memberships and a premium theme, it is completely possible to design your blog for free. Today I’m going to show you exactly how to design your blog header and any other blog image you may need for FREE! There is ZERO COST involved with what I’m about to show you. So, put your purse away and tune in!

So, how do you design your blog header for free?

The short and easy answer is Canva. However, when I was first introduced to Canva through a pin I found on Pinterest I was overwhelmed. It didn’t look easy to me. Now that I have learned how to use it effectively it seems easy, but that was not always the case. So, I’m going to hold your hand and show you the ropes of designing your blog header for free in Canva.

First things first! You need to find out what size your blog header has to be or what it can be. For my example, 1200px x 400px was a good size for my blog header. You can generally find this information in your theme customizer where you would upload your header. If you’re not sure where that is, please see the image below.

Did you figure out the size of your blog header? Awesome! Let’s proceed!

Head to Canva.com. Register for a FREE account. They will give you an option for a 30-day free trial of Canva for Work. It’s totally up to you if you want to take advantage of that. However, it isn’t necessary for what I’m going to show you. Everything in this tutorial can be done for free. No subscriptions, nothing! 100% FREE!

Once you have your Canva account setup, it’s time to create your blog header. At the top right, click on use custom dimensions so you can create your blog header in the size you need.

That will bring up your working canvas where you can get started with creating your free blog header. There are so many options. You can add a background color or background image. You would click the + under ‘Document Colors’ to select the color you want for your background. You can also scroll through some textured backgrounds. There are a ton of free textured backgrounds available. If you want to upload your own background image, just click on ‘Upload.’

Then you will want to start adding some text. You simply click on ‘Text.’ Then you can type your text, change your font, size, and color. You can also use any of the other text styling options available.

Changing the color of your text in Canva is easy! You can even make the same text layer multiple colors. Click on the + under ‘Document Colors’ and select the color you want your text to be. Easy peasy!

You can upload any images you want to use in your header, but make sure you have rights to use them. For this example, I am using a free watercolor peony clipart I downloaded from Inkstruck Studio.

One thing I love about Canva is the arrange layer function. You can arrange each layer however you wish. I wanted my text above my peony clipart, so I made sure the peony clipart was active, clicked ‘Arrange’ in the top right and clicked ‘Back.’ Voila!

I love all of the features Canva has available. You can copy layers, add filters, crop, and flip layers. For my example, I copied my layer and flipped horizontally.

I wanted a clean header design, but you can add as much or as little as you want. Canva is pretty easy to use once you click around a bit. It’s a little bit of trial and error, but you’ll get it.

Once you are happy with your blog image, you can download your image to your computer so you can use it. Canva will give you its recommended file type to make it easy for you.

Using Canva may seem like it has a learning curve at first, but once you figure it out you will love using it. I used to be an avid Photoshop user, but now I very rarely use it. Photoshop is not a necessary investment for your blog because of Canva. Canva has simplified the image creation process and costs you nothing. You can create so much more in Canva too! I use Canva for everything from my eBook cover to social media images to blog post images and everything in between. It’s such a useful tool and you can’t go wrong when it’s free!
