Jan 1st + Monday ("Moon Day" in Japanese)? Yep, felt like I should draw Moon God Sans again created by @aka-indulgence. Thank you to everyone who liked my previous Moon God Sans fan arts. Here's my thank you back after so long. The Tumblr compression/resolution thing is wonky with this one. "aka-indulgence" or someone else I know can PM me if you want to see the true resolution pic. I was trying to stick to the canon design. That...did not happen. Zen is too weak NOT to draw tattered clothes and other non-canon stuff. == Love Notes ==
Hey there lovelies, I hope your Monday started your week off well <3 As I'm sitting here typing this I have my son asleep under one arm, so I apologize if this is a bit scattered. I saw this infographic today and it made me think of you all. I don't know about you, but I spent a lot of my life thinking I had to do everything, excel at everything, have all the money, and the car, and the house, and the kids, etc. But you know what? Life isn't about having everything. It's about finding the things you love and matter most to you and focusing on them. The things that matter most to me will absolutely be different from everyone else (we may share some of the same) but no two people are exactly the same when it comes to interests, and thats beautiful. Dig deep into the things you love crew, and remember you don't have to feel any shame for the things that mean the most to you. Do you like video games? Or Ornithology? How about fanfiction? Or maybe Indy 500 races? Do you find joy when you're alone in the woods? Or sitting out with friends at a bar? Do you enjoy being alone? Or maybe you love to sing your heart out at karaoke? Whatever it is you love-- embrace it, whether it's "Weird" by someone else's standards or not. If it makes you smile, if it makes you enjoy your time on this little blue dot-- dive in lovelies, with no regrets. I so very hope that even if it's only little bits at a time this week you get to spend doing the things you love, whatever that may be. Rest well and drink some water tonight <3 Love you crew

The Convention-Part One: Inked - Hank Loza x Reader
Tumblr media
Tagging: @im-just-a-mississippi-girl @librarian1002 @words-and-seeds @elizabeththebat @broiderie @thanossexual
Tumblr media
Hank always attends the San Diego tattoo convention. It’s a weekend event hosted at the Convention Centre, with a couple of nights stay over at the Hilton next door. He usually heads up early on the Thursday for set up and comes home on the Monday. It’s a long few days. The show usually opens at 11am but he’s always early, making sure everything he needs is ready and working and it closes out at 11pm. Usually he grabs drinks with a couple of the other artists afterwards.
It's the fifth year he’s been working alongside Nina in his booth. The Padre crowd, the other artists call them because of where they hail from. They may have separate studios but the two of them have been collaborating since he took her on as an apprentice seven years ago. This is her first time entering one of the competitions, which is a crime because her work with watercolour pieces is phenomenal. He’ll be surprised if she doesn’t rank in the top three.
Just the fact she’s participating will raise her profile exponentially. He’s been urging her to for years, but she’s always been self-conscious about her work, especially around so many other skilled artists. It’s only in the last year that that has changed, and Hank thinks that’s because of her relationship with Creeper. He’s watched her confidence soar since she’d taken up with the club’s Road Captain. They’re good for each other, he sees them laugh a lot more these days and it warms something inside of him. Both are patient and resilient, each one has struggled with their own demons in the past and come off better for it. He knew the instant he introduced them outside the community centre that they would be a good match.
Hank glances at his schedule on the wall before he dips his rotary tattoo pen into the black ink cup. It’s almost end of day on Friday and he has a three hour slot booked in after he’s finished shading the anchor he’s tattooing onto Bishop’s chest. He rarely takes walk-ins anymore, he did in his first couple of years but he prefers the structure of a schedule, it’s easier for him to book onto some of the seminars he wants to attend, or for prep. They still have to use the Artist’s Area when they print of their stencils and transfers, and it can be a pain in the ass if there’s a backlog. He prefers to get his shit organised on a client-by-client basis, so he knows what he’s doing with each one. When he takes that step away from the booth to collect the next stencil it gives him the time to recalibrate and attune his focus.
It’s when he wipes away the excess ink from the tattoo just over Bishop’s heart that he senses your presence. He hears the slight creak of the chair behind him as you sit down and glances over his shoulder to see you sitting there, putting away the camera you use for photographing the event back into it's case. It’s an expensive bit of kit and he always lets you stash it behind the table at the front of the booth when he’s inking you.
Both Nina and him are using Nestor as their assistant today, the other man is thorough and quick, something they need when they have to turn things around quickly. Out of the two Prospects, Bottles is the more personable which is why he’s on front of house. His amiable persona sets people at ease and draws them in, both his and Nina’s diaries are filling up months in advance and Hank has to admit, it’s thanks to Bottles.
You mouth the word ‘hi’ when your eyes meet, and he finds himself smiling before he turns back to Bishop to work on the last part of the shading. Bishop registers the change in his expression, his gaze straying over Hank’s shoulder.
“She’s pretty.” Bishop murmurs, his tone low enough so only the two of them can hear it over the buzz of the tattoo gun.
“I know.” Hank says as he places his palm on the other man’s chest and adds a darker shade of ink to the curvature of the anchor. “She gets prettier ever year.”
He’s never told Bishop or any of the guys about you. This is their first year attending the convention and they have their sights set on other things. Nestor’s already booked in with Nina for one of her later slots, he’s been taken with her watercolour work for a while and is getting a rose inked onto the space underneath his collarbone. His is one of the pieces she intends to showcase at the competition later on. Bottles has his eye on a couple of seminars, there’s some taster sessions in piercing he’s interested in. Creeper’s here for Nina and Bishop as a model for Hank’s compeition entry.
Only Nina has some knowledge of what Hank gets up to once the shows over and he knows that girl keeps her confidences even with Creeper.
This thing between the two of you started four years ago when you slipped into one of his rare free slots, he hasn’t looked back since. He’s done all of the work on your body, from the Medusa tattoo on your left bicep to the Grecian vase featuring one of the muses on your right forearm. He did the laurel wreath on your wrist last year after you’d won an award for your photography collection ‘The Ancient Art’ – documenting different tattoo methods throughout the world. Some of the practices such as Handtapping dated back over 2000 years ago and the work you were showcasing was truly stunning. He’s looked it up online after you mentioned it and he was completely blown away.
“They call her the Tattoo Journalist.” Hank tells Bishop as he sets down the tattoo pen and uses the alcohol pad to wipe away the excess ink. “She does a lot of traveling to different countries documenting art forms, covering events like this and interviewing different artists. We catch up once a year.”
He bundles the wipe up in his gloved hand before tossing it in the trash.
“I bet you do.” Bishop remarks, his gaze returning to you as Bottles hands you the electronic tablet so that you can sign the consent form.
Hank says nothing. He doesn’t want to discuss his relationship with you, the fact it’s started to get more complicated over the past year. It started off as casual sex, the two of you sharing a couple of drinks before participating in some mind blowing sex at the end of each day. Once the weekend was over you’d go back to your life and he’d go back to his. It happened again the following year and then the next. It became the thing he looked forward to when he attended the conventions, seeing you again.
You never stayed the night, preferring to slip out of his sheets and return to your own room, he would catch glimpses of you throughout the day, just in passing before you met in the bar and went back to his room. It was last year that everything had seemed to change. He’d fallen asleep in the immediate aftermath on the Sunday night and woken up Monday morning to find your number propped up on the hotel nightstand.
The two of you had spent the past twelve months intermittently texting back and forth. Sometimes it was sexts, memories of nights locked away in the Hilton hotel room. He’d called you once and you’d gotten off to the sound of his voice in a hotel room in Argentina. However, most times it was just normal stuff, pictures of random stuff you’d come across in your travels, questions like what the hell is gelato and is it any different from ice cream? How his mom was doing after her fall.
All of these seem like indicators that you could potentially be interested in more but he’s not sure whether to broach that topic because the past few years you’ve had a really good thing and he’s terrified of ruining it.
“You’re done.” He tells Bishop as he sticks the cellophane over the small tattoo and uses medical tape to hold it in place. “I need you back there for 7pm for the Judging.”
Bishop grunts his response before he picks up his shirt from the coat hook Hank had installed during the setup of the booth and pulls it on over his shoulders. Hank rolls his stool backwards, allowing Nestor space to clean down as he peels off his black latex gloves and throws them into the trash.
“Hey.” He says as he raises to his feet, ignoring the twinge in his lower back from sitting in the same position for too long.
“Hank.” You say with that sunny smile of yours and he feels all of that apprehension melt away as you lean in, lips brushing over his cheek.
You smell like daisies, a fresh subtle scent that clings to your skin. It takes everything in him not to kiss you right there and then, in front of everyone. He wishes he could fuck off the rest of the day and take you back to the hotel, spend the entire weekend worshipping you with his lips and tongue.
Instead, he pulls away and drinks in the sight of you instead. You’re wearing a white t shirt with black shorts and tights with Doc Martins, your favourite pair with the roses up the side, an acid washed denim jacket thrown over the top. Compared to some of the sights he’s seen today, you look practically conservative.
“You just get in?” He asks you, his fingers trailing over the lanyard until he reaches the laminated press pass.
“A few hours ago.” You tell him, before tilting your head towards your camera case. “Jay Reno paid me to do some exclusive shots of his booth, so I had to get them squared off before I could come over, you know he’s a complete diva.”
He does know. He’d seen Jay lose his shit when he’d hired a marketing assistant last year who posted something he didn’t like on social media. There was nothing wrong with the post according to Nina, Jay just didn’t like the way the light caught him. It didn’t warrant the reaction that he had.
Nestor clears his throat indicating he’s done with the reset and Hank jerks his head towards the chair indicating for you to take a seat. You comply before rolling up the t shirt sleeve on your right arm, so it sits above your shoulder cap. Nestor hands him the tablet and Hank shows you the design once more.
It’s an epitaph to the Hades and Persephone myth. An ornate frame surrounded by roses and daisies. There’s an anatomical heart in the centre, two hands, one skeletal and one feminine reaching for it. The outlining alone will take three hours, you’ll have to come back for the shading, but Hank doesn’t have a problem with that.
“You still in love?” He asks you.
His heart skips a beat when you look him dead in the eye and say “Yes.”
Love Hank? Don’t miss any of his stories by joining the taglist here.

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “You Won’t Be Seeing Me Anymore” by Tim (a.k.a. Chris) Andrews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8bhFTWVNVU  This was recorded in London, but it has a folk-pop California sound that could’ve come from Laurel Canyon or San Francisco circa 1967 (when this song was made). On a cosmic jukebox this track would play next to It’s A Beautiful Day (“White Bird”) and Love. It was written by Gordon Haskell, Tim/Chris Andrews’s former bandmate from Fleur de Lys. Gordon is often noted for his role in an early incarnation of King Crimson, but beyond that he was a prolific singer-songwriter who, after years as a “starving folksinger,” found success with the hit single “How Wonderful You Are” and the platinum album HARRY’S BAR.
The lyrics are about seasonal love, coming from a young man who travels for a long time and leaves his troubled sweetheart behind. The track (w/Gordon on bass and guitar) was produced by Paul Clay (Ace Kefford, Sharon Tandy, early Yes) and Mike Noble (Joan Armatrading, Fleur de Lys, John Kongos). It was the B-side of “Sad Simon Lives Again,” Tim’s first solo single after he’d signed with renowned producer, promoter, and music executive Tony Hall (who’d plugged The Beatles, Carmen McRae, and later inked Black Sabbath’s first record deal). Tim later reverted to his real name Chris and went on as a solo act and a collaborator with Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees).

Harringrove Flip-Reverse It Challenge ^^
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It's finally here and I can unleash these fics into the world, woo hoo! Thanks so much to @harringrove-flip-reverse-it for the wonderful prompts for this week. Here's my fic for Monday. I also have fics planned for Wednesday, Friday and Sunday :D
CW: sexual themes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Monday 27th March SFW: School Project
"How much longer do I need to carry him for Harrington?!"
It shouldn't be funny. It really shouldn't, and he knew that he would get into so much shit for finding it so. But there was something about the scene which made Steve wish he had a camera on him. Maybe it was the lumbering around as if he'd just gotten off horseback. Maybe it was the cursing and the occasional grunts of disapproval. Maybe it was how he looked overall. Maybe it was all of the above. But what he'd have given to have a polaroid of this moment to smirk at for years to come. To smile at in times where smiling seemed hard to do. Glancing over his shoulder, Steve smirked at an increasingly pissed off Hargrove marching a short distance behind him. White flour bag strapped to his chest by a thick harness and the most grumpiest look on his face that Steve had seen in a while.
It was day 2 of their school project for Mrs Glass' class and it seemed like already Hargrove wanted to shift full parental responsibilities over to him. Not that that was gonna happen. They'd already agreed Monday, Wednesday and Fridays were his days and Hargrove would have him Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Sundays were a free for all at the moment, over which neither could agree on. So today was Hargrove's turn to carry the baby and attend to its imaginary needs. Saying that, the smug look on Steve's face, the glint in his eyes, were probably another cause for Hargrove's foul mood. Because as soon as the teens had been paired up in class, they'd been making things difficult for each other. For example, he'd nearly dropped the baby twice yesterday. Admittedly, yeah one was his own fault but the other had been deliberate sabotage by Hargrove who'd let go way too early and left him hitting the deck rather than the baby. Visions of white powder and a disapproving tut and 'F' from the teacher had played in slow motion as he'd just managed to catch him, to sniggers from above. Bastard. Clearly didn't give a shit about their grade. At least that's what Steve thought. The guy might not give a shit about detention either for messing around but Steve wanted to actually get something higher than a C at some point this year. Wanted to bring home a card which didn't go straight in the trash. He was sick of seeing that look on his dad's face when he merely glanced at the card and then either tore it up or put in straight in the kitchen bin. As if that's what he thought that's what it was worth. Not the paper the ink had been scribbled on.
"Come on man, it's just around the block," he grinned, motioning to the corner with his head and then continuing down the street casually. Hand in one pocket, cigarette in the other. Still keeping distance between him and Hargrove and the "baby". He even made sure the wind wasn't blowing in their direction. Hargrove though. He'd nearly set fire to the baby yesterday when lighting up. Just shrugged and put the baby on the table like the bag of flour it was. "Shouldn't av gotten the baby so close Harrington. Irresponsible parenting man," was the response he'd gotten after shouting. Irresponsible parenting geez…like he wasn't familiar with that concept. And who'd been the one putting fire near paper. Jesus.
Now finally at his, Steve dug the key out of his pocket, opening the door and smirking as Hargrove strode quickly through it as if he didn't want to be seen dead the way he was. "After you ma'am."
A hefty swipe and Steve was left sans cigarette, staring at Hargrove as he barged past and beelined straight for the kitchen. Not even stopping to take off his shoes or anything, and the cigarette was still lit. Great.
"Hey no smoking in here! Or around the baby! Jesus…." Banging the door shut in frustration, Steve quickly slipped off his Nikes, hurrying through to the kitchen and leaning on the doorframe. Expecting carnage. If Hargrove had done something stupid like stubbed a hole in the baby or ditched him on the counter or something, it was gonna be his turn to be pissed. It was bad enough that he had to work with him with the first place. Without even thinking about the complications their teaming up was causing.
Like seeing Hargrove sat there in his kitchen the way he was was doing things to him that it really, really shouldn't have been. Apparently for now, Hargrove had decided to play nicely. A window had already been thrown wide open and the now extinguished cigarette was behind his ear. Not a spot on the baby to be seen. Sat casually on one of the chairs, he'd pulled it out so he could casually drape himself over it, carefree with the baby now on his lap. Derpy marker drawn face staring directly at Steve. Their eyes met for a moment before Hargrove's headed south and then shot back up, a great grin where a smirk had been as he leaned further back. Studying Steve with amusement before looking around. Then he spotted it and Steve looked away as a full throttle laugh blow out of Hargrove, who after grabbing the baby, stood up and started to make his way to something on the floor. A Moses basket.
"Holy shit Harrington." Hargrove's snorts continued as he now started to scan the room as if looking for more baby paraphernalia. "Something you're not telling me pretty boy?" "Shut up man. Mom brought it down from the attic so it would look like like I was taking something seriously for once in front of my dad." A partial lie. The first part but not the second. His mom had been too preoccupied with packing last night to even notice the flour baby or acknowledge her son. His dad however had at first making the same assumption as Hargrove seemed to have done. That there was a real baby out there with a piece of paper that had Steve Harrington's name on it. But when he'd finally noticed the school project, he'd just muttered something about his son finally taking something seriously for once and then had walked out to sort the car.
"So defensive man. Maybe you do need this more than me." A smirk, but Hargrove only tapped the cigarette. Not making any attempt to hand it back over. Not that Steve really cared at all. The other teen loved to try and get under his skin, in any way he could. But he had plenty more where that came from. So what was one? He was soon driven to finding another though, heading back out into the hallway to go and find his cigarettes. Hargrove's eyes burning on his back. Snatching up his jacket, he rooted through all of the pockets to find his pack and then paused. He didn't even have to turn around to know Hargrove was now stood right behind him. He'd not even heard the guy coming.
"Relax Harrington," Hargrove chuckled as Steve slowly turned around, an unimpressed look on his face. Seriously did this guy not know personal place? He was stood way too close for Steve's liking. "Baby's down for now. Nice and cosy." That shit eating grin just drew an eye roll from Steve who managed to nudge his way out with his shoulder and made his way back to the kitchen. Like hell he trusted Hargrove's word. He'd probably stuff him in the sink or something. But on looking in from the door, he saw that nope. Hargrove had actually proved him wrong and wasn't actually just yanking his chain. The baby was safe and sound in the Mose blanket. Little face peering out from the blanket and Hargrove's denim jacket, which somehow Steve hadn't even noticed the other had taken off. "You gonna have to trust me man. Can't be watching me all the darn time."
Spinning on his heel, Steve was met with Hargrove being way closer than he had been before, causing him to brush up against him in a manner he'd tried to avoid. Had he not been so darn fixated on making sure the other teen had done what he'd said he had, he wouldn't be in this mess. Now trapped up against the doorframe with nowhere to go. "Feels like you could do with relaxing in more ways than one." "Bite me." That shit eating grin, those narrowed eyes as one hand came over his head. It was so hard to not stare at him. Not notice that his shirt was done down like it always was. Showing off his chest in a way Steve had really tried his hardest to not stare at. Darn it was hard and well, he could feel the effects it had had despite his best not to. Instead though, he concentrated on staring back, fire in his eyes as the other finally chuckled and shook his head. Lips now brushing against Steve's ear. "Don't tempt me." He couldn't breathe. It was like the world shrank to a pinpoint and then he was gone. A whole chasm between them as Hargrove studied him, practically pushing himself up against the door so Steve could keep himself upright. Shit. The vein in his neck was pulsing, as if it was waiting to be bitten. To be torn into, and the look that crossed Hargrove's face suggested that maybe he was thinking the same thing. The other teen's stare draping over his neck before looking downwards. Shit, shit, shit. He couldn't move his leg fast enough, the snigger telling him he'd been seen. Not like Hargrove couldn't have felt him earlier
Don't tempt him….what the hell…. Fucking little…that look now saying that Steve should be more careful with his words. His own look swirling in warning and something else which he didn't want to be seen. Too late. Hargrove had taken the look and twisted it, using it as a challenge. Almost looking as if he was gonna take it as an invite. But he didn't. Just leaned against the fridge and watched him. Well Steve wasn't in a submissive mood or in the mood for this bullshit. Either Hargrove's or his own. What the hell was going on with him today? "Hormones giving you hell huh?" It was a slight cackle, a tone which Steve didn't appreciate as the other teen continued to stare him down. But it was more hunger than anything that Steve now saw. His own eyes now darting across the heated blues which were spearing him. Making him feel like he was still pinned against the door frame. Steve didn't really know where this was going but as Hargrove just stood there. His look saying nothing more than, well King Steve. Your move. -----------------------NFSW Incoming in 3, 2, 1 ;)-------------------
Bang
The door slammed against the wall, echoing into the hall as a whirlwind of limbs and a back up against it announced the arrival of the two horny teens. Steve briefly pinned against it, fierce lips tugged at Hargrove's before he was pushed into his room. Hands hastily grabbing at fabric and hair as they both clumsily made their way to his bed. It seemed that after many shower "incidents" and much hair pulling, things had finally come to a head. That they were finally doing something about the testarone (sp) filled rivalry which had ruled their days. Just probably not in the way that most people would have expected or wanted. But fuck them. Who else needed to know?
If anything, it was Mrs Glass' fault for putting them together in the first place.
Falling onto the bed, shirts were soon on the floor. Pants being worked down with as much haste as their kissing. Their hands fondling anywhere they could reach. So much time wasted when they could have just got on with it, or maybe it hadn't been. Maybe the tension had been required for them to get to this point. Would either of them made a move otherwise? In this town? Yeah right. It was behind closed doors where they were safe. Not at school, not in the car park. Not even up at the quarry. Here. With his parents gone and no Hargrove-Mayfields about to walk in on them either.
"Top drawer, on the right." No arguments for a chance. Just the other teen pushing off him, finally shedding his jeans and chucking them onto the pile of their clothes which had been rapidly growing. Leaving Steve just in his boxers and Hargrove in his chain. Cigarette tossed onto the desk as he started to rummage through the drawer.
"Lube?" "Should be same drawer."
A pause and then a smirk as Hargrove threw him a knowing look over his shoulder and a bit of cheekiness in there. "All out Harrington." There were a couple of packets now in the other's hand. His ring catching the light as he moved slowly back over to the bed. Widening grin as he saw Steve's look. The way he now stared at him without hiding but a tiny bit of shame. He'd been certain that he still had some packets left but maybe he'd thrown them for being out of date or somethin'. "'Tis fine. I got a better idea anyway." Knees either side of Steve's waist, the teen leaned over him. It didn't matter he was the shorter, he still seemed to tower over him. Hands on the wall and pushing himself up as if he was about to start to do press ups on him. Staring down with eyes that caught his own and made him swallow hard. The look from his dreams. Cos yeah, he'd dreamt about something like this. Maybe even jerked himself off to it. It had made him feel ashamed but the feeling it had given him had been worth it. And now, being here, having him actually on his bed….. It was like he was dreaming all over again. He didn't even realise how zoned out and lost thinking about his fantasy he'd been until a surprisingly gentle hand reached under his chin and tilted it up. Eyes now staring as if into his very soul. "You didn't hear a word I just said did ya?" A shake of his head and a hearty small laugh from Hargrove, who shook his head in turn. Flicking blonde hair over his shoulder before turning his attention back onto Steve. Amused as all hell but there was a brightness to his eyes which hadn't been there before. "Wanna help me out with the lack of lube issue Harrington?"
Now it was Steve's turn to chuckle, sucking in his bottom lip. Not sure really how to respond. Put it this way, it wasn't a no. It was just the fact he couldn't get over how ridiculous this all was. They were supposed to be downstairs doing a dumb assignment, writing in the journal that they were meant to. Keep. Not up in his bedroom about to do each other. It was crazy, it was madness and the more he thought about it, the more he thought this may have been one of the dumbest things he'd ever done. He knew it was his dick talking, it had to be, but bizarrely, this also felt right. "I' ain't getting' on my knees for you." "Ain't expecting you to. Though it'll just make it harder for you man." Harder? Oh the connotations of that and boy was Steve's mind in the gutter. Smiling up at the other, he merely watched as Hargrove started to move towards him, itching his backend up bit by bit until he was practically sat in Steve's chest. Making him come face to face with the massive dick which he'd tried to always divert his eyes from when they'd showered together. When they'd been dressing in the changing rooms and Steve had had to stare ahead to stop himself from even snatching a glance. He'd already seen that Hargrove went commando. The lack of brief or boxers in his clothes pile when they did gym and basketball had told that story. But he'd not known if it had been all the time or not. Now he figured that it probably was the first. And apparently he also used cologne….down there. Because it felt musky but not in the way he had imagined it, or smelt on his own hands after he'd finished giving himself one. Who the hell….never mind. Hargrove did. That was the quick answer to that one. Hopefully his dick wouldn't taste bad then. He didn't imagine that he actually used it on his dick …did he?
"Liking the view down there?" An eye roll and then his eyes glanced upwards. Amusement of course was what he saw but he realised that whilst he'd been musing about things, Hargrove hadn't taken his eyes off of him. He'd been watching and he wondered if now he was about to get down to business, actually do this for the first time in a while, if he would continue to watch. Only one way to find out. His tongue flickered across his lips before he raised his head a little to meet soft skin. Running his tongue and down before drawing his tongue out to lap slowly. Feeling the heat on his cheeks and the gaze down on him as he heard a groan above him and a slight shiver, before Hargrove steeled himself again and tilted his head up a little.
"That's it pretty boy."
There'd been a time when those words would have bristled. Caused his skin to prickle in a way that said fight. But now it was prickling through anticipation, as he placed his tongue back on and started to work it. He needed to be all wet after all but why make it a quick job. Hargrove seemed to like it slow, given his reaction and were they really in any hurry? Depended how impatient Hargrove was he guessed. Maybe the teen wouldn't appreciate it. But as before, he could only try and find out.

“Story is a vessel for carrying meaning. Meaning inhabits story the way a morning mist envelops a pine forest- everything present, but nowhere tangible. Detach meaning from story and both die.”  – Daniel Taylor
Dearest Richard,
Mist is rising as a racing scull skims across the water stirring up the sentry seagulls poised as guards on the railing of the wooden dock as I round Bde Maka Ska. A vision of a moment. One to be embraced on this gleaming Monday in Minnesota. Fall is creeping in slowly. I can feel it. I can see it. I can hear it. Bittersweetness is its name. Each autumn creates a hesitant acceptance of this predictable and can’t hold back kind of tug and pull—always. I can count on it.
Tumblr media
I was just thinking more about your box. The one with the artifacts of your story in hard copy. Those sepia photos. The telegrams and letters that criss crossed the country. Your flight training book and purple heart with your name penned on the back in black ink. Your passport and the postcard photo of you and two other airmen walking the streets of San Antonio in the scorching heat of summer. The card that was addressed specifically to mom. It was so hot that you wrote that it made you feel “like biting someone.”
Tumblr media
I am curious about the back story with you on that phrase. There is a dear photo of you where it looks like you are pretending to bite mom and she is loving your antics. You two might have been around thirteen and eight respectively. Just a guess. No dates on your photo collection so I have to do more sleuthing. Guessing as I look a bit closer. Creating speculated assumptions, enabling me to be more attuned to the specifics.
Those box items were what helped me to move forward with what more I was to learn about you and what you wanted shared. The gift you offered me as my external world was yanking my chain asking me to come clean. Something was coming undone. It began simply as a 3:40 AM phone wake up call just after the New Year in 2014. An alert, the matriarch had collapsed, emergency heart surgery was the pre-dawn message. Everything that had been held under wraps for decades became unglued. A simple dam bust and all that had been held back gushed down the fast flowing waters. Family in-law dysfunction was becoming untethered. Truth was nipping at my heels and finding me in my dreams.
There is a lot more to that story, but in this context I will be brief, expressing what I wish to say is that I was drowning and your story pulled me out of the water and brought me on to shore. It allowed me to dry off while catching my breath. Wrapping a warm towel around me, giving me a chance to regain my strength, opening me up to so much more that was simply waiting to be found.
Love you and your sense of humor. Mom loved it too.
Will write more later,
Your Niece

(ARTS246) Ch. 10: Typographic Design Education & Project #3 Progress

I spent this week working on the process book for project #3, which is due on Wednesday, April 3rd. The upcoming deadline has been causing me stress because my previous process book had a more flexible and longer timeframe for the deadline. Nonetheless, I am determined to tackle this challenge.
I spent most of Monday getting acquainted with the website and software that we'll be using for our process books. The website is called Blurb, which offers an extension in the InDesign software to design books using their templates. These templates need to be customized before creating the design file. It's important to note that the front and back cover are separate from the actual pages of the book and the files need to be combined before finalizing and submitting them for printing and shipping. The printing process takes about two weeks, which is why the turnaround time for this project is shorter compared to the previous two projects. Although I'm not an expert in using Blurb, I'm excited to experiment with the service more and potentially use it to print my other portfolios in the future.
The process book's layout has been a challenge for me, mainly due to the grid and margins. Although the margins are pre-set from the Blurb template, I found them to be too small for my liking on the spreads. To fix this, I took inspiration from my old process book from ARTS102 (Introduction to Design Technology and Concepts) and incorporated a similar margin and grid into my new process book. Initially, I felt strange using my old process book's layout and ideas, but I also thought, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" This was particularly true for this project, as I loved the balance and harmony of my original layout. I aim to achieve that same look and feel with my new process book while showcasing my detailed process and the improvements I have made from each project.
The cover design of the process book draws inspiration from the traditional analog movable type process, where typography uses a movable component, such as metal or wood letters and ink, to reproduce the elements of a document on different types of paper. The design is also influenced by the artwork of Brad Vetter, a designer and letterpress artist who visited and spoke at the University of South Carolina. His work inspired me, and I wanted to emulate his style in digital art form. I took inspiration from my mood board, my traditional style of geometric surface design, and the multiple typefaces used throughout this process book, such as Cabin Bold, Josefin sans, and Josefin slab. My main concern was that the cover might feel too crowded and confusing, making the text difficult to read. However, after receiving feedback from my professor and peers, I realized that the color palette is balanced, the title is easy to read, and the visual hierarchy is well-balanced. The only suggestion I received was to change the colors of the large circle in the top left corner of the cover, as that element slightly threw off my visual hierarchy.
My process book follows the theme of my cover art, but I've decided to make the geometric shapes less prominent. Instead, I want to highlight each project and its process on the pages. I aim to let the typeface be the main focus and make each project stand out to catch the audience's eye. To make some pages look better, I may add subtle geometric shapes to fill in empty spaces or where some pages look too wordy. I also need to work on the visual hierarchy of some spreads, as some elements feel like they are competing. Overall, I have made a good start with my process book for Typography I and II. I plan to improve it before submitting it for the final class critique and printing.
The reading for this week discusses the importance of conducting in-depth studies of common typographic design issues and how professional designers can develop creative solutions by applying all the skills learned throughout the textbook. This includes integrating type and image on posters, establishing a visual system to unify various materials, experimenting with content in publication design, thinking about typography in terms of time and motion, creating dimensional and environmental typography, analyzing and visualizing data, and developing a unique visual language for everyday events. This chapter combines all the concepts learned in this book, summarizing why educating oneself on typographic principles is crucial. Having taken Typography I and II courses, my views of typography have entirely changed. Previously, I paid little attention to the use of type, the visual hierarchy of typography, or even the fonts used in various works. Now, I pay attention to these elements even more, and I have a greater appreciation for typography than ever before. I understand that many decisions go into creating something related to typography, whether it's a book cover, magazine spread, poster, social media post, etc. I am grateful for these courses, even if they were challenging because they helped me become a better graphic designer. I have come to see type as an art form, not just words on a page.
