Freak On a Leash
I fucking love right Darkthur so much, I've been rotating these guys in my brain for the past week. Hes wonderful, I want him dead, here's my ramblings about em:
Arthurs horribly fucked up, hes not jazzed about killing but he sees it as a tool in his arsenal + it helps that he kinda enjoys the blood lust
John gets his arm amputated because of an infection/ it being mangled and dubbed too far gone by doctors, neither can protest in their comatose state. John is half awake even with anesthesia so he feels when they start sawing through flesh and bone. his coma period is much more horrific, with Lilly being the only thing to anchor him to hope. Arthur waking up feels like a godsend.
John can still feel the residual limb and can slightly move the elbow around. when he gains control of arthurs right leg, theres a learning curve to walk, tho they adjusted after having to sprint around the island caves.
Dreamlands is where they begin to bond/Arthur sees him as a person and John feels like more than an a voice in his head. its a stained relationship but they realize they still care about each other after they escape the pits.
Arthur invokes the "do you trust me" as they reach the plateau, John says yes
Arthur hold up the dagger to his chest
"i have your fucking heart"
Hastur is flabbergasted and almost impressed that this hobbled man he threw in the pits still has fire in him.
John is freaking the fuck out.
Arthur is using both of them as a hostage to negotiate 100% of what they want. "John will be mine, you will return us home, your stupid fucking cult will leave us alone, and you will rot in the dreamlands half the king you once were. you will lose to a mortal or die along with your better half."
"you're bluffing. would you really trade your life for this parasite? Arthur Lester, you're smarter than this."
Arthur doesn't break eye contact when he plunges the dagger into his chest.
the kings tendrils fly towards him with a guttural screech.
all forward momentum stops with the weapon, less than an inch from Hasturs fluttering heart. blood pumps down his tattered dress shirt with only a sharp inhale and twitching eye to indicate pain.
a smile dusts his face "is this really time for games, king?"
"how does it feel to be beneath someone you consider lesser? I bet it stings" Hastur growls and arthur twists the knife "down boy"
"John do you really want to stay with this freak?"
John, vaguely pissed off "my dick has lead me places i wouldn't go with a gun"
kiy: oo get it white boy
john: do NOT get it white boy

I would have bled out in the parking lot
Amber Nicole Thurman's death is on Trump's hands
Bess Kalb
Sep 17
In 2019, about six weeks after my first child was born, I found myself on the bathroom floor in a small, but nonetheless unsettling puddle of blood.
“Oh no,” I remember thinking. “I just did the laundry.”
I called out my husband’s name, but the sound caught in my throat. The pain I felt inhaling to get enough air out of my lungs to yell the two syllables in “Char-lie” jabbed my guts like a bicycle spoke to the abdomen.
So I was quiet, trying to keep breathing in a way that didn’t move anything inside me, and the pain pulsed a bit, then steadied, then dulled, then evaporated into whatever hell ether it came from.
Because there is no G-d (unless there is, in which case I abbreviated His name so as not to desecrate it, and also thank you, King of the Universe, for subscribing to this newsletter) this was the one time in my life I hadn’t brought my phone with me to the bathroom.
I decided to sort of slither-lumber to the door like a lame harbor seal, because I didn’t want to stand and loosen the spoke that had just stabbed me. I reached for the knob and let the door creak open.
The cat was there, looking at me right at eye level, keenly aware what was happening, and completely unmoved by it.
“You are dying,” he blinked, “Pity. Have a nice time.” He sashayed away.
Fortunately, our house in Los Angeles was small enough that from the bathroom door one could see everything. My husband was sitting on the couch with our infant, and I knocked on the open door to summon him. Within one one thousandth of a second, he set the baby on the (since-recalled) donut pillow and was holding my head.
I sat up. I breathed. No pain. I took a picture of the bloody mess on my husband’s phone, texted it to myself, he found my phone, then I texted the picture to my OBGYN.
Apologies for being graphic, but within the puddle there was something roughly the size and shape and color of a fig.
“Is this ok?” I said to my doctor, the bicycle spoke scraping lightly at my insides again from all the lumbering.
“Come in,” she replied.
Within two hours, I was in the waiting room of her office, accompanied by my terrified but SMILING mother, who was still, as is the Jewish custom, in town for “a few days or so” after the birth.
An ultrasound which felt like the finger of Satan himself revealed there was retained placenta in my uterus. If I hadn’t come in, there would have been more hemorrhaging, then sepsis, then whatever the cat foretold.
The next day, I was in surgery getting a Dilation and Curettage.
I went home, pumped the anesthesia milk, then fell asleep perfectly fine, my sweet newborn cooing merrily in the bassinet next to his alive mother.
Amber Nicole Thurman’s story was the same as mine, but it happened to her in Georgia in 2024, not California in 2019. She was a Black woman in a healthcare system that disproportionately kills Black women, especially postpartum. In 2021, the Black maternal mortality rate was nearly three times the rate it is for white women. Post-Roe, the toll is and will continue to be staggering.
Because post-Roe, the procedure that saved my life, the D&C, is something doctors cannot perform in states where matters of life and death have been left up to non-medical Christian-supremacist superstitions.
I know the pain Amber Thurman felt when that placenta dislodged and carved its tiny, treacherous hole in her uterine wall. I know the terror she felt when she saw the blood, and the rush of dread when she thought of what her child would do without her.
And when I vote in November for Kamala Harris and every progressive down-ballot candidate, I will do it because she can’t. And I will do it so that women in Georgia and Idaho and Texas and North Dakota and South Dakota and Utah, Arizona, Nebraska Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Florida, South Carolina, and West Virginia won’t have to meet the same completely preventable doom.
This election isn’t just about Amber Thurman. Every day of my lucky, breathing life is about Amber Thurman. Because the only thing that separates us, is one of us bled out under the right Supreme Court.
Let’s raise absolute federal hell about it.
-- From Bess Kalb's newsletter The Grudge Report. I pay for this substack -- though it's free-- and think this is a message worth sharing far beyond her newsletter.

TWST Signature Spell Effects on the Body
Because I'm a wordy, purple-prose kinda bish, I thought about what each Unique Magic might actually feel like on the body (at least the ones that affect other mages when cast). (SPOILERS FOR BOOKS 5 ONWARD)
(CW: Loss of motor function, scopophobia, senses being messed with, forceful sleep)
Off With Your Head:
The moment it slaps around your neck and shoulders, there's that deafening rush of blood to one's ears. If you and your magic were lightning, the collar just became your glass bottle. Outside of the momentary dulling of senses, one may have a general difficulty breathing, either from the collar fitting itself or the lack of support without one's magic. Lightheadedness and an internal hollowness make the collar leave you feeling like after a flu.
Bet the Limit:
His magic literally amplifies and pushes back your magic, but to do that he has to rip control of it from you. Bet the Limit gives one that jerking tug on the shoulders, a jab of pain that burns into your neck almost. Sometimes if one resists or tries to wrench control back, they're left feeling like their shoulders have been dislocated. They haven't of course, but the feeling is still enough to keep one from moving them for a while.
Doodle Suit:
There's a metallic, fruity Sichuan peppercorn-like numbing on the senses before it's replaced with what he decides. Pretty straightforward.
(Legit tho: I think his is kinda scary in terms of utility. The possibilities o_o )
King's Roar:
Burning. King's roar doesn't have fire but there's still a dry burn. Rug or rope burn, an allergic reaction, or being splashed with hydrogen peroxide, it all makes the nerves curl away like shriveling plants. Skin on downwards begins flaking like baked mud, falling off into sand like chunks of slate.
Laugh With Me:
Laugh With Me at first feels like the pinch of nerves. But pulling against the bindings is like hyena teeth biting and yanking your muscle and bones; you're not in control. That tugging hurts much less, more of a firm mouthing on your body in whatever direction he wants.
It's A Deal:
Much like his flattering words, his magic leaves one feeling glittery. But there's a cold tentacle-like grip on the heart for a quick moment; a reminder of what lies in the undertow. It's not a memorable sensation, but memorable enough to know what happens when it returns upon failing to fulfill your end of a contract. The resulting Anemone doesn't feel like much until one touches it, like a large zit.)
Shock the Heart:
The sudden wash over you feels like the splash of cold water after getting dumped out of a boat. Pharyngeal jaws scrape and tug on your tongue to reel you in, truth dripping off of you like seawater.
(Truth is a lot of times subjective so why nerf it further? HC he can use it multiple times but lies cause it works on those unaware)
Oasis Maker:
Rain that's always the perfect refreshing temperature. Never frigid but never feeling hot. A relaxing shower of jasmine and chai, without the stifling steam
Snake Whisper:
A burning cobra bite to the skull. It's venom sears every wrinkle in the brain as you feel yourself get pulled along by the collar of proverbial tail coiled around your neck. Resistance feels like hot sand filling your brain cavity. Eventually the oppressive weight of said sand makes one submit.
Sleep Kiss:
Sleep Kiss seems pretty straightforward. It probably feels like sitting in a soundproof glass box, with cold air filtered in. Every chilly inhale acts like anesthesia, or the tug of exhaustion by hypothermia.
Fae of Maleficence:
His 'Blessing' feels like being laid into a patch of semi-prickly twigs; a dragon's nest or roost. It hurts slightly, but the diligence is paid to lay you gently in so they don't prick. Eventually you can somewhat relax, but adjusting or moving reminds one of the thorny poking all around you. It just becomes preferable to sit still, rather than try waking or even attempt at getting comfortable.
Meet in a Dream:
Many mistake Silver to have soft hair, but the only downy lightness about him, I think, is Meet in a Dream. Whatever sensations one feels when dreaming of flying, that fills you to buoyancy as he leads you along the Dream Corridor.

Code: S.O.S [Epil.][Xenomorph x Fem!Reader]
Hey, I'm back, did you miss me? I felt this needed an extension since cliffhanger endings in... Really anything are the worst if there's not gonna be a sequel.
And for you thirsty bitches that wanted monsterfuckery with the Xenomorph - are you okay by the way - you get a one-shot. If it's popular enough, I'll make a full-fledged series. Scout's honor.
Also, I had an anon before that was digging this series. I hope they come back to see the redone Chapter 3. (Yea I think about anons that give me genuine criticism, what about it)
CURTAINS!
"Vitals are stable, and the medicine's been administered. [Last Name], can you hear me?"
Through the shining haze, you find Yutani's face, squinting as even the minute aches in your legs are ground to nothing. As the anesthesia courses through your blood, she tugs a clipboard and writes on it with precision and speed inhumanly possible. Before long she's finished four forms and put the clipboard back aside.
Comforting, her gloved hand reaches and undoes a few tangles in your oily hair. "How are you feeling?"
After a moment your lips manage to part. "... Hungry..."
A soft chuckle, and she pats your shoulder. Looking over to another crew member, she raises her head. "Tran? We're still well-stocked on supplies, right? Please make sure we have some stew, if possible, after the surgery."
"Understood, Doctor." Some footsteps, and your chin is lifted from your head falling to your chest - and the moving equipment.
"Don't look at the surgery, look at me, alright?" She instructs. Once she has your full attention she sighs, relieved. "I hope you don't mind, we managed to clean out the rest of that ship. The Far Reach is lucky, to have had only one of those creatures on it. You're very brave, to have fought it on your own."
Swallowing, you manage a nod. "... Anderson...?" Your eyes are too tired to move.
"Anderson is okay." She accompanies this with a minute glance toward the door. "... We're very lucky we found you so soon. The alien inside your chest isn't big enough to be a risk to your life during the surgery."
You lift your head, and she stops your motion of looking once more.
"... Do I smell bad?" Maybe a dumb question would help lift your mood.
Yutani chuckles deep in her chest, patting your shoulder. "Like you just crawled out of a bonfire on a carrier ship." The jovial tone in her voice helps you relax further, with her eye flickering towards your chest, and then the monitors. "... Here, allow me."
Before you can question her, her hand sets the pen aside, and rests over your eyes. Harshly you drag a lip between your teeth, inhaling sharply. Weirdly no pain, but you feel the sensation of something clinging onto and then being forcefully removed from near your heart. For a moment your chest spasms from the feeing, with a grotesque squelch and a series of hisses to follow.
Right when you can bear the mystery no more, the machine makes a buzz and a few harsh clicks, before something wet snaps in two. By the time Yutani lifts her hand, the machine is beginning the process of stapling and stitching you back together.
"Not a minute too soon." A relieved sigh makes her heave.
"... Have you done this before?" You ask, eyes falling to the process. By her reaction, the worst part of it is over, and you have no reason to really be scared. Apart from, well, surgery being something you'd rather not be awake for.
"Mhm. This was made... shortly after the discovery of the Xenomorphs," She replies. "We're approaching the finishing of backbursters as well."
What? "Back... bursters...?"
"Oh. There's a mixture of Yautja and Xenomorph out there. While few, we must be prepared for every kind we meet." She taps the pen to her brow along this train of thought. "The only way to win is not to meet them, but should we, well, we're prepared now."
The intercom beeps, both of you raising your heads. An instinctive wish to not be alone has you reaching for Yutani as she retreats to answer it.
Pressing the button, she clears her throat. "Yutani."
"Yutani," Tran's voice rings through. "A call came in for you. It's her."
"Right, send her through." A few seconds after Yutani's go-ahead, her phone rings. In one quick motion it's at her ear. "Hello? Yutani speaking." Then her lips curl upward. "Yes, she's awake and stable - being stitched up as we speak."
Her eyes flicker to meet yours, and the assurance calms you once more. With a nod and a tacit farewell, she passes the phone to you. Swallowing, you pray you don't sound raspy.
"Hello? [Last Name]."
"[Last Name]. My name is Ripley. Ellen Ripley." Her voice carries strength and resolve, like she had fought a thousand battles and remains who they made her into. "Do you have time?"
"Yes, absolutely. It's nice to meet you, Ripley."

LOOK AFTER YOU - XAVIER SHEN X READER
Warnings : mentions of injuries and anesthesia, reader is gender-neutral!
Genre : sickening fluff <33
Word count : 1.2K words
Additional notes : This had been sitting in my drafts for a while now, and now it’s finally here!! Given how Xavier selectively chooses his missions and work, it makes sense that he’d feel more like a househusband than anything😭💗
Tip jar!
Masterlist
With dragging feet and a very noticeable limp, it took all they had to not just completely pass out halfway on the way home—still, they had to hold on. Just a few more minutes. They could handle that. Dr. Zayne had managed to patch them up well enough for them to stay conscious until they ended up on their doorstep.
Finally standing in front of their apartment, they lifted an aching arm to knock on the door—only to stumble forward as it swung open, their boyfriend’s face poking out from behind it. Already before they could speak, a small frown had formed on his face. “The hospital called just now. I didn’t know it was this bad.”
Xavier pushed the door open fully, reaching out for them with open arms that they—all too happily—slumped into. He could carry 10 times their weight if need be; they didn’t worry about him struggling to carry them inside in the least. “Thanks,” they mumbled against the wool of his sweater. Almost reflexively, they melted into his hold as they inhaled the scent of him clinging to the soft fabric: cinnamon, vanilla, and sunshine.
“Are you okay? In pain?” he worriedly asked as he heaved most of their weight and began to guide them to their bedroom.
At that, they snorted. “They gave me enough anesthesia to knock out a mule. I’m just trying to avoid putting pressure on the wounds, since I won’t be able to feel just how bad they are—“
“Until it wears off.” He nods in understanding, having been in their place more times than he could count. One hand left their back to push their bedroom door open and switch on the lights. “Then it’ll all hit you like a freight train.”
“Put nicely, yes. I would’ve said “hurt like a bitch,” personally.” A look of amusement danced on his face as he huffed out a laugh at that, kicking a few slippers out of the way so he could lean over the side of their bed. He lowered them to the bed as gently as possible, and they groaned out as their body sunk into mattress. “This feels like heaven now. Could you—?”
Before they could finish their request, Xavier had already nudged their fluffiest pillow underneath their head with one hand, while the other was pulling up their softest blanket up to their neck. “You’ll want to nap, of course,” he quietly said, brushing back a few sweat-slicked strands of hair away from their face and settling into his spot beside them on the bed.
“Just for a little. Mission was exhausting.” Sighing, they closed their eyes for a few moments, as though collecting their myriad of tangled thoughts regarding it, before blinking back up at him with a tired gaze. “Keep me company until I fall asleep?”
“Of course,” he quickly replied, crystalline eyes shining with the sort of fondness only they could alight within him. “Wanna tell me about your day?”
They shook their head, an apologetic half-smile on their lips. “It was shit. Nothing much to say about that. I’d rather hear about yours, though.”
A barely-there squeeze to their hand reminded them that it was fine. He’d always indulge them, after all, and if that entailed him talking about his certainly-in-comparison-boring day, he’d oblige.
And really, he’d once told them—in that solemn manner of his—that if they asked him to serve his heart on a silver platter, he’d gladly carve it out of his chest and welcome the gaping hollowness. How else would he carry it to them, still beating and yearning for them? Maybe when it fluttered in their palms it’ll bridge the chasm of space and time that he sometimes felt between them.
“I woke up at two, I think.” He looked a little embarrassed as he confessed, though it was nothing that surprised them. “I didn’t want to… ah, have another accident, so I stuck to ordering lunch for us both.” His spine straightened, as his eyes lit up in remembrance. “Oh, I got you salmon and potatoes. Is that ok?”
This time when they smiled, it almost seemed lovesick—or maybe they were growing drowsier by the second. “More than ok. How’d you know that I was craving it?”
“You tend to have eating patterns,” was all Xavier said, as though that were explanation enough. Maybe that truly were the case, or maybe the feeling of his knuckle brushing against their cheek was too soothing for them to question it. “It wasn’t too hard to notice.”
“Mmm. What else?”
Voice little more than a whisper now, they seemed to burrow into the covers even more. Just a few tufts of hair showed from the edge of the blanket, and Xavier had to resort to stroking the top of their hair now as he went on. “You probably didn’t get to notice it when we walked in, but I cleaned the entire house. Top to bottom, and I didn’t even have to pull out the vacuum.”
“Sounds like you’ve earned yourself some praise,” they slurred out, their chuckle sounding like it was distorted underwater, though it was only the effect of being filtered through sleepiness.
He hummed, a mischievous glint to his eyes. “Not to be too greedy, but I believe I do. Unless you happen to have any complaints about my cleaning skills?”
“I’ll be… the judge of… that.” To hear the last sentence, he had to really strain his ears, but it was all worth it.
When will the novelty wear off? When will he stop clinging to every single utterance of theirs; every soft sound and breath that escaped their lips? He feared he’d spend his entire lifetime clutching at every one and stowing it deep between his ribs. That greedy feeling of wanting to keep every fragile part of them to himself never went away, it seemed. And he supposed it never would.
“I guess I’ll have to aim for a 5-star review, then.” No response; just the sound of their even, deep breathing, and the shift of the Hunter’s outfit they still hadn’t taken off with every exhale. Xavier’s hand stilled its ministrations, and he carefully untangled it from their hair to set back in his lap.
For a few moments all he did was simply take the sight of them in. Soot-covered attire and perspiration-dotted face and all, he still thought they were the most beautiful thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Perhaps, they were even more striking in his opinion when they were so battle-weary.
Still, it can’t have been too comfortable, and he knew that the first thing they’d want to do after waking up—aside from taking pain medication, since the effects of the anesthesia would’ve long worn off by then—would be to shower. With an impossibly softened gaze, he leaned down to leave a fleeting kiss against their forehead, one that somehow still left his heart stuttering in his chest as they hummed and smiled in their sleep. Falling back to their side, he curled his warm palm around their hand that lied on the pillow, his mellow voice carrying his love in a whisper and on his frayed sleeves.
“Sweet dreams.”

medwhump prompt/question: mixing drugs that don't go together.
I know the one place you're supposed to be 100% upfront about illegal substances that even Might be in your system is the hospital especially before surgery, I've been told that weed Will kill you if you're put under for surgery while it's still in your system.
What are some common drugs that mix badly, or uncommon ones that would be good for a story? What/how is it actually killing you? how do you fix it if it's already happening? what does it look/feel like?
Marijuana and surgery:
Generally speaking, marijuana itself won't kill you during surgery. BUT if you use marijuana regularly, it's going to take a lot more medication to make you unconscious. We're talking like 3 times more medication even for people who use 3 times per week or less. So if you don't tell the anesthesiologist 1. they're going to find out and 2. it will be in the most unpleasant way possible for you.
So just tell them.
Plus, if you smoke/inhale anything (including tobacco, and probably vapor) within 8 hours of surgery it can decrease how fast/well inhaled medications work (and a lot of anesthesia meds are inhaled). And if you eat anything within 8 hours of surgery you might end up throwing it up and inhaling it, which can cause severe lung problems that can put you in the ICU.
So even if you do use regularly, hold off for any fasting period you've been advised about.
Here is a chart I made for medication interactions with common OTC (over the counter) medications.

— °˖ ⊹ ꒰ 🌿 ꒱ tearing up old wounds ; addison montgomery (grey’s anatomy)
#. ( season 3 episode 14 ) you woke up after inhaling the neuro toxic from the colon cancer patient’s surgery, and addison was stupid enough to run in after the patient’s anesthesia was wearing off, ripping up bandages from old wounds
content warning; suggestive content, afab reader, implied homewrecker! reader, age-gap (reader is in the same intern year as meredith), mention of surgeries, blood, intubation,
a/n. I had this little idea while rewatching the show, I fell in love with addison all over again, ugh she is so hot- enjoy
everything was foggy, you still felt nauseous, you were still shivering even under the thick blanket, and the oxygen mask on your face felt more suffocating than the heavy feeling in your chest. blinking, moving your head around and trying to figure out where the heck you are.
“I thought you were on burk’s service today.” you heard an all too familiar voice coming from your side, faint, and sort of mumbled, but you knew who it was, you knew exactly who it was. you felt weak, struggled to move your hand up to your face to rub your eyes, to help yourself to see better.
“you went in there…” you croak, taking a shaky breath in as you spot her green eyes in the haze of your vision. you gulp again, trying to compensate for how dry your nose and mouth feel because of the oxygen mask. she is right in front of you, if you could just
you can tell by her blurry appearance and her messy red hair. she looks so tired and worn out, like every muscle in her body aches, just like yours does, and just like that realization makes you wonder if maybe you should have requested to stay on her service, maybe this whole thing wouldn't have happened with the two of you. “I did.” she whispers, her throat hoarse and scratchy.
“but i couldn't watch her suffer, fight against the intubation like that..." her voice trails off, and her hand reaches out for you, as if she wants to touch your face, caress your cheek but can't bring herself to do it. "i couldn't let her feel so scared, miserable." she sits up and leans on the bed next to you, reaching out to tuck some strand of hair behind your ear. “what do you mean?” you ask, not understanding whatever she is hinting at. you'd know because you were in her position once after your surgery, the surgery you had to get after a psych patient went rogue, dressing up as another surgeon then going around, and stabbing people in the stomach.
but then you remember-
she was there when you were fighting against the intubation, you remember it clearly. the same green eyes were staring at you, frightened above the rim of the surgical mask. the same lips formed the words, "you will be okay," over and over again. you try hard not to cry as you recall the events, because even though you are happy, you're also afraid.
"can we... can you lay next to me?" you finally manage to say, because you're starting to become restless from being trapped under this blanket, sitting still isn't really appealing anymore. "of course, i'm here darling." she smiles softly, and you could swear you're seeing her tears glisten in the dim light of the room.
addison shifts in her bed again, putting the green strap around her head then getting up to lay next to you on your bed. you catch doctor bailey rolling her eyes at the nurse's station before coming over and closing the curtain around the two of you. your breathing has gotten steadier, your heart feels calmer, and you close your eyes slowly as you settle into her embrace, inhaling deeply the scent of her scrubs, smelling like a freshly sterilized operating room.
her heartbeat slows down to match the beat of your own and you sigh contently, relaxing in her arms. “thank you.” you whisper quietly. she kisses the top of your head. you don’t think there is anything she wouldn’t give to make sure you are alright. “no need to thank me, sweetheart.” she murmurs softly, wrapping her arm around you tighter. your fingers are laced together now, her thumb rubbing soothing circles on your skin.

I have the fantasy of having you at a table with only a pair of shorts and while you relax I subject your heart to various studies until I get to the echocardiogram, where I ask you to inhale poppers to see its impact on the image. Next, I ask you to run on a treadmill and inhale poppers at the same time until your heart reaches its limit. After listening to it again, I would put you under anesthesia to remove your heart and examine it in depth and finally reimplant it in your chest.
PLEASE
My heartbeat got around 120bpm just reading this! What are you waiting for?? 🥵

Lavender
Lavandula officinalis
Known as: Elf leaf, nard, nardus & spike
Related plants: A member of the mint family Lamiaceae, there are genus of 47 known species of lavender. It includes well known plants such basil, mint, rosemary, sage, savory, marjoram, oregano, hyssop, thyme, lavender, and perilla, as well as catnip, salvia, bee balm, wild dagga & oriental motherwort.
Parts used: Flowers
Habitat and cultivation: This flowering plant is native to the the Mediterranean
Plant type: Perennial
Region: Most are hardy from Zones 5 to 9 | Spanish Lavender (L. stoechas) is only hardy in Zones 7 to 9.
Harvest: You can harvest all the budding spikes or flowers on your plant during the growing season but avoid cutting into woody growth. Don't want to take more than 1/3 of the plant at this time & limiting your harvest to flowers and buds should keep you within recommended limits. As first frost approaches, snip off woody, leafy stems & branching. You can safely take up to 2/3 of the plant at this time. Harvesting too early can stimulate more growth which you don't want since the lavender is moving into winter dormancy.
Growing tips: To grow lavender successfully it needs well-drained soil, full sun & may be a good idea to check the PH beforehand because soil too acidic may kill off your plants. It survives well in dry conditions, so you'll only have to water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Plant lavender in spring, once all chances of frost have passed. This beautiful, fragrant herb is a great addition to raised beds, in-ground gardens, and growing in containers spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart.
Medicinal information: Taking lavender products by mouth, including teas and a specific oil supplement or inhaling lavender oil as aromatherapy, seem to reduce symptoms of depression & anxiety. Lavender oil is believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to heal & burns & bug bites. Some studies suggest that consuming lavender as a tea can help digestive issues such as vomiting, nausea, intestinal gas, upset stomach, & abdominal swelling. A study published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology found that lavender oil could be effective in combating antifungal-resistant infections. Using it as aromatherapy can also reduce colic symptoms & menstrual cramp pain.
Cautions: Lavender essential oil is possibly safe when inhaled as aromatherapy, but applying products that contain lavender oil to the skin is possibly unsafe for young cis males who haven't reached puberty. The oil seems to have hormone-like effects that could disrupt normal hormones & in some cases, this has resulted in breast growth.
Lavender might cause sleepiness and slowed breathing. Taking lavender with sedative medications might cause breathing problems and/or too much sleepiness.
Lavender might slow down the central nervous system. If used with anesthesia and other medications given during and after surgery, it might slow down the central nervous system too much. Stop using lavender at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
