the night air was much warmer than you had anticipated. ingrid seemed to be feeling the same as you. mapi lounged on a towel by the little campfire you had built in her bikini. the three of you had gone swimming earlier in the day and mapi simply had never changed out of her bathing suit.

"it's so hot, i think i might have to go back inside," you groaned. it was such a nice night out that you didn't want to waste a moment of it. your vacation would be ending soon, and then you'd be forced back into the swing of things.

"stay, we can swim again," mapi suggested. you scoffed a that. it was a good idea, but if you went back to the hotel, you were staying there.

"what about our bathing suits, maria?" ingrid asked. mapi sat up and pulled the string on her bikini top.

"we should skinny dip. people do let loose on vacations, not that anybody is out here to see us." mapi sat forward, leaning towards you just a bit more. you were easier to sway than ingrid was, especially on something like this. you hated to admit it, but you didn't really need any swaying.

"why not? we can stay where it's not too deep," you said as you stood. mapi clapped and cheered as you stripped down to your underwear. she was in the middle of helping you when both of you heard ingrid begin muttering to herself in norwegian. you turned your head first and were greeted with the sight of ingrid pushing her shorts down her legs.

"i'll kill you both if we get caught."

"and we will die happy mi amor." mapi smiled, not even deterred when ingrid slapped her arm.

Hopefully none of that will be present in her voice. Pressing the call button, she waits for Condor to accept the call. It goes through almost instantly.

“Condor One, this is Roost. I am Agent Hunnigan, I will be your contact for this operation,” Ingrid says. 

“I hear you loud and clear,” the man replies. His answer is hardly anything to go by, but at least Condor does not sound outwardly frustrated; he did not sigh or take a long time to answer. That does a lot to settle the jump of nerves in Ingrid’s stomach. He is just like any other operative (he probably isn’t, if he is the choice for extracting the president’s daughter, but Ingrid tells herself that anyway).

"I'm not drunk enough for this."

Leon slams his laptop shut, hand palming the metallic cover. Lingers there for a while, lets the frustration fester in his gut. Hunnigan just glances up from her own desk, weary look in her eyes as she prepares for the oncoming storm.

“You have plans today, Hunnigan?” he asks, sardonic irritation scraping the back of his throat. “Drinks are on me.  Think it’s a Jack Daniel’s kind of night.”

She ignores the question and shakes her head. “What did Simmons do this time?” she asks. Leon doesn’t even care that she knows now. Hell, he wishes everyone would catch on, most of all him.

“Check the shared calendar. Bet he made it public too, the prick.”

Leon waits as several screens flash across Hunnigan’s face, eventually being awash in white and blue. “… ‘Cross-Division Calibration Sync’?” she reads aloud, squinting in baffled confusion.

“And at 8am tomorrow to boot,” Leon scoffs, barking out a single exasperated laugh. “Can you believe this guy? Drags his feet on anything DSO, yet has the nerve to set up weekly check-in meetings.”

“Sending the invite at 5pm the day before is… a choice,” Hunnigan offers. Given her level of professionalism, Leon smirks and accepts the concession.

“It’s a fucking power-trip for him,” Leon mumbles, pushing his hair back. “God, I hate him so much.”

“You could feign ignorance for tomorrow,” she says, “Say you missed the email before you clocked out.”

When Leon flashes a smile that’s all teeth, Hunnigan just sighs and shakes her head. “Nah. I told you, this is a whiskey kind of night. If he wants his fingers in every pie, he’ll have to pry it out of me and my hangover by force.”

“Leon, you’re not twenty years old anymore.”

“You know what else I’m not? Simmons’ direct report. What’s he gonna do, complain to the President?” He crosses his arms and leans back in self-satisfaction. “C’mon, Hunnigan. Let me be petty for once.”

“For once. Sure.” Hunnigan can’t quite keep her stone-cold demeanor at the last sentence – it melts into sly amusement. “Let me know how it goes tomorrow. I’m sure he’ll enjoy wasting an hour with you.”

God, what would he do without her. “Oh, I’ll make sure he loves it.”

Why do the cousins treat the younger MC compared to the older MCs?

It's partly due to the mc's cousins being old enough to form their own opinion, and being well aware that the child!mc isn't responsible for their father's poor attitude. They also see the innocence in a child!mc and have essentially helped raise them.

Whereas with adult!mc, they weren't really old enough to form their own proper opinions free of outside persuasion from their father. They also believed that their father had no reason to lie to them, as he hadn't really before, so they took what he said about the MC at face value.
