A Fanfiction Year in Review

2021 was my first year of fanfiction writing! It has been such a ride, but I am so glad I took the plunge into fandom. I am taking a quick moment to go over what I think went well, what I think I can improve on, and then I'll leave you all with some recommendations for fics that came out/were completed in 2021 that you should check out.

What I did well:

Outlines I did some pretty good outlines for some of my fics, which really helped me get from point A to point B in a cohesive way. I'm finding that combining outlines with the right vibes (music/moodboards/art) is the key to good writing for me.

Commenting on other people's work. This was the first year I made a point of commenting on other people's fics, and let me say it has been one of my biggest joys. I have had some really great discussions with authors about their fics, which has been awesome for growth, and I've also made people smile, which is such a great feeling.

Just doing it. For a long time, overthinking kept me from writing. "Can I do it as well as this author" etc. This year I kind of shut that off and I'm just doing my best. It has been very rewarding.

What I could do better:

Finishing what I start. While I was working on "Misery Business", I started drafting another fic at the same time. THIS WAS A MISTAKE. It seriously harmed my ability to focus on my other fic, and I ended up making sub-par work for both of them, instead of strong work. On the other hand, "The Silent Knight" was written from beginning to end without anything else in between, which I think helped cohesion.

Endings. I really struggle with how to do an effective wind down. My fics basically carry themselves, momentum wise, until the climax. Then after the climax I never know what to do with myself. Definitely something to work on.

Regular updating. I need to fix my time management for my life in general to give myself time to write.

Fandom: BNHA

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Katsuki, Iida, and Kaminari had to solve a hostage crisis togather? Great action writing, fantastic characterization, really clever plot. The combination of characters is unusual, and it makes for really interesting interactions. I can't say enough good things about this one, the writing is so solid. The author knows how to write a cliffhanger!

The Darkness I Know by @deiliamedlini

Fandom: LoZ

This list would not be complete without the fic that consumed my entire brain for the past three months! A really original take on the calamity, plays with the disaster genre, messes with whumptober expectations, and tells a sugary sweet love story all in one. Link is blind here, which you don't see often, and his disability is handled in a very respectful way. Zelda is absolutely phenomenal- talented at some things, worse at others, but really real as a person. Their chemistry is the best thing about the story.

everything you (n)ever wished for by symbolofsimpery

Fandom: BNHA

This is an E-rated fic, but the sexual content is minimal and plot irrelevant, so I don't feel uncomfortable recommending it. Mystery and questions abound in this fic. Why is Katsuki in an alternate reality? Why is he married to Izuku in this reality? Where are Izuku's pants? XD But overall it is extremely sweet and really works through a more mature Katsuki's feelings in a realistic way.

your treasure spent by @lantur

Fandom: FMA

Same drill, minimal sex here, just skip it if you are like me and don't want to read that part. This fic has one of the best (if not the best) run-downs of Orientation and Mobility that I've ever seen in fiction. It is thorough, it is realistic, and it deals with serious topics in a mature way. Plus the author writes Roy and Riza's relationship extremely well. Really got the "we're married but in denial about it" thing down to a T.

The "Gyo" in "Gyomei" by shinkiyo

Fandom: Demon Slayer

This is a stellar example of a character study in fanfiction. It explores a really under-utilized character within in a canon-compliant way, that also expounds on a variety of themes. With only 183 hits, it is criminally under-read, for a fic with such high quality. Definitely check this one out.

Technicolor Beat by @bnhababe

Fandom: BNHA

Speaking of under-utilized characters, this fic narrows in on Jirou and Denki in a realistic, sugary sweet love story. It takes its time, but every moment is so worth it. It has a current-day, quirkless setting, and the author has captured the essence of a huge chunk of the cast extremely well. A fun fic, but also deals with various characters' insecurities and downfalls in a mature way.

Say Something by RealmOfBlue

Fandom: LoZ

I see a lot of fics that have Link as selectively mute, but this one did a great job of weaving that condition into the narrative. It is canon compliant, a single chapter long, and it packs a huge punch. Some of the sections were like a kick in the gut, in the best way.

Rain of Broken Things by Iomhar

Fandom: The Hunger Games

Some authors write entire books and give them to you for free online. Iomhar is one of these authors. This 250k word masterpiece is visceral, adult, and in my opinion better than the actual Hunger Games canon. I didn't even like the Hunger Games that much, but this fic does a great job of demonstrating the disgusting coercion and creep of a totalitarian state. It feels very real, and it's unsettling, but the sardonic attitude of the main character makes for laughs in spite it all.

Unspoken by TsuaidaMay

Fandom: BNHA

I know, another BNHA fic. This one is a small one-shot that was written for a zine that explores an AU where Katsuki finds himself deaf and meets Izuku in sign language classes. It is understated and heartfelt, and it sucked me into the world very quickly, leaving me wanting more.

Everybody Knows by @blingbland

Fandom: Batman

This one kind of hit me out of left field, because I don't really read Batman fanfiction, but the care with which the characters are handled here is incredible. Killer portrayal of a deaf character, terrifyingly good characterization of someone with trauma. Takes hurt and comfort to a new level, actually made me care about super heroes. And the writing is just A+++ Go read it.

          this was THE DAY. the day lydia martin had been           waiting for for a pretty long time. okay, maybe it’s           only been about a week or two since she found the           open position for her favourite fashion magazine on           the internet, but ever since she got the job. she’s been           waiting for THIS DAY. and here it was. with a little bit           of a hangover (totally ignorable) from the previous night,           she got out on the floor where she’d be working for the           next — well, possible near future. truly nothing can knock           the SMILE OFF HER FACE. except for one person. someone           she didn’t really intend on running into ever again. and of course           lydia being her good old self, she doesn’t think twice before           running over to the female, not even hesitating for a second to           think over the fact that she’s already been inside the building.           but no, all lydia can think of is the morning she couldn’t get her           to leave. she practically had to throw her out of the apartment.           she didn’t do one night stands, but yeah occasionally she did           hit rock bottom & those were the moments she was not proud           of herself.                        ”oh my god! please tell me you’re not                         FOLLOWING ME now. because i swear                         to god i will call the cops on you.”

after a long day at the office, a few  drinks had become   far more than truly intended. the o n l y thing allison had  to show for was a blinding headache. not that she could  blame anyone other than herself. to say the least, her  day was off to a rocky start. water bottle in hand, & two  aspirins, she prays the combo does its work  OR there is   going to be hell to pay for everyone involved. and  n o w  the universe has reered its not  remotely funny sense of  humor. a sardonic chuckle spills from her lips. if there is 1 thing she doesn't have, it's time. time for petulant things  such as the strawberry blonde before her. the taller one  of the two, can count on one hand the number of one- night stands she's had. time is something she simply  doesn't have, but the previous night she needed to let  her hair down. she certainly had to release some stress and the petite woman proved to fit the bill. now though,  the raging pounding of her head was leaving N O room  for insolence. on any other day she'd be more shocked,  maybe even a little worried. but she's neither. a frustrated sigh leaves her lips and her head nods in  the direction of her office door. 

                     "following you? hardly. i work here-- that name on the                        door, mine. i could say the same, though.                        what are YOU doing here?"
