Soviet and western leftist antizionism
Many on the left seem to think that antisemitism is solely a right-wing problem, but recent events have shown that it's a big problem on the left as well. This isn't new: there were many antisemitic campaigns in the Soviet Union, such as the "anti-cosmopolitan" purges, the execution of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, the Slansky Trial, and the Doctors' Plot. Especially after their Arab allies lost the Six-Day War to Israel in 1967, the Soviets spread influential antisemitic and anti-Israel propaganda. Modern western leftists' antizionism draws many ideas directly from this antisemitic Soviet propaganda.
For instance, one idea that appears constantly in antisemitic ideologies is the idea that there's a conspiracy of Jews controlling the world. Most notably, it was the basis for the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. In Soviet anti-Zionist campaigns, Zionism was depicted as a threat to communism and liberation movements worldwide. In August 1967, the article "What is Zionism?" appeared in Soviet newspapers, warning of a well-funded "wide network of Zionist organizations" being "active behind the scenes of the international theater". In October 1967, the Komsomolskaia pravda newspaper claimed that Zionism was a "mighty empire of financiers" that controlled United States media and influenced many countries. Also in October, professor and Communist Party member Trofim Kichko described "international Zionist bankers" and their danger to "international workers' and liberation movements". More pamphlets portrayed Zionism and Israel as agents of American imperialism and capitalism. This exact same theme appears in western leftist rhetoric about Israel today. Just to provide some examples:
Something else Soviet propaganda did frequently was equating Zionism to Nazism. Soviet Weekly's 1977 article "Why We Condemn Zionism" called Israelis "worthy heirs to Hitler's National-Socialism". The Anti-Zionist Committee of the Soviet Republic (AKSO) claimed that Zionism was the equivalent of Nazism in its ideology. Several political cartoons compared Israel to Nazi Germany:
Some Soviet publications went so far as to accuse Zionists of collaborating with the Nazis. A 1985 TASS news broadcast announced that it was "the Zionists who assisted the Nazi butchers by helping them to make up the lists" of other Jews. AKSO released a brochure called Criminal Alliance of Nazism and Zionism, alleging that Zionists colluded with the Nazis against both other Jews and the communists. All of these ignore the fact that genocidal antisemitism was the core of Nazi ideology, by definition Zionists can't be Nazis. Even if one disagrees with actions taken by the state of Israel, nothing they've done is like what happened in the Holocaust. This antisemitic comparison appears in leftist antizionism all the time, from the term "Zionazi" to comparing Israelis to Nazis. There's too many examples to count, so here's just a few:
Anti-Zionism featured prominently in the Soviet Union's antisemitic campaigns, particularly the Slansky Trial and the Doctors' Plot, in which mostly Jewish officials and doctors were arrested and executed on spurious claims of being part of a Zionist plot. Tens of thousands of Jews applied for emigration visas to Israel, though many were denied. Yet through all of this, the Party insisted that antisemitism didn't exist in the Soviet Union - they were just anti-Zionist. The newspaper Agitator instructed its readers that their anti-Zionist activism would be accused of antisemitism, but that it was just a trick. AKSO itself was led by anti-Zionist Jews, a deliberate choice by the Soviets to avoid accusations of antisemitism. The decision to create AKSO was announced in the wake of a growing wave of international protests calling for the end of the USSR's restrictions on Jewish emigration. Soviet propaganda dismissed acts of antisemitism as "Zionist provocation" and said that Zionists were being antisemitic by suggesting that Jews were "an alien element in every state". Yuri Ivanov's 1969 book Caution: Zionism! claimed that antisemitism was "Zionism's sole stake in life" and that Zionists "regarded antisemitism as a boon", also saying that "one of the demagogic methods of defending Zionism against all attacks on Zionism as a whole is to qualify them as "antisemitic acts"". It also describes early Zionists as being opposed by the "overwhelming majority" of Jews. Propaganda insisted that the Soviets had no "Jewish question", but the moment restrictions on emigration were loosened hundreds of thousands of Jews left, mostly for Israel. Similar ideas of Jews provoking antisemitism, falsely accusing antizionists of antisemitism, and being the "real" antisemites are common among left-wing antisemites today, as is tokenizing anti-Zionist Jews (like JVP):
All of these ideas are antisemitic, and if you don't understand why, you should research the history of antisemitic tropes instead of insisting they're just anti-Zionist. I'm tired of seeing fellow non-Jewish leftists saying they're being called antisemitic for opposing genocide or saying "killing babies is bad" when they were actually spreading conspiracy theories straight from the Protocols or Pravda. And no, adding "but not anti-Zionist Jews" after promoting a conspiracy theory that has historically been used to persecute Jews does not make it less antisemitic. A Jew calling you out for this doesn't mean that they're an "evil Zionist" who wants to kill all Palestinians, and instantly suspecting that is also antisemitic. Instead of repeating over and over again that anti-Zionism isn't antisemitism, consider the fact that antisemitism and anti-Zionism have long been intertwined, and those who genuinely support Palestinian civil rights need to actively fight the antisemitism in their movement.

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … November 10
1855 – Quaker poet and critic, Rufus Griswold, denounces Walt Whitman as a "scurvy fellow...indulging the vilest imaginings"
In the November 10, 1855, issue of The Criterion, Griswold anonymously reviewed the first edition of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, declaring: "It is impossible to image how any man's fancy could have conceived such a mass of stupid filth". Griswold charged that Whitman was guilty of "the vilest imaginings and shamefullest license", a "degrading, beastly sensuality." Referring to Whitman's poetry, Griswold said he left "this gathering of muck to the laws which... must have the power to suppress such gross obscenity." He ended his review with a phrase in Latin referring to "that horrible sin, among Christians not to be named", the stock phrase long associated with Christian condemnations of sodomy.
Griswold was the first person in the 19th century to publicly point to and stress the theme of erotic desire and acts between men in Whitman's poetry.
1879 – Patrick Pearse (also known as Pádraic or Pádraig Pearse (d.1916) was an Irish teacher, barrister, poet, writer, nationalist and political activist who was one of the leaders of the Easter Rising in 1916. Following his execution along with fifteen other leaders, Pearse came to be seen by many as the embodiment of the rebellion.
When the Easter Rising began on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, it was Pearse who read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic from the steps of the General Post Office, the headquarters of the rising. After six days of fighting, heavy civilian casualties and great destruction of property, Pearse issued the order to surrender.
Pearse and fourteen other leaders, including his brother Willie, were court-martialled and executed by firing squad. Thomas Clarke, Thomas MacDonagh and Pearse himself were the first of the rebels to be executed, on the morning of 3 May 1916. Pearse was 36 years old at the time of his death. Roger Casement, who had tried unsuccessfully to recruit an insurgent force among Irish-born prisoners of war from the Irish Brigade in Germany, was hanged in London the following August.
The suggestion that the unmarried Pearse, a hero of Irish nationalism, may have been homosexual, has drawn fierce opposition from some Irish people. However, his biographer Ruth Dudley Edwards is clear that although celibate, he was undoubtedly physically attracted to young men men and boys.
1879 – The poet and influential critic Vachel Lindsay was born on this date (d.1931). His exuberant recitation of some of his work led some critics to compare it to jazz poetry despite his persistent protests. Because of his use of American Midwest themes he also became known as the "Prairie Troubador."
Lindsay's fame as a poet grew in the 1910s. Because Harriet Monroe showcased him with two other Illinois poets — Carl Sandburg and Edgar Lee Masters — his name became linked to theirs. The success of either of the other two, in turn, seemed to help the third.
Edgar Lee Masters published a biography of Lindsay in 1935 (four years after its subject's death) entitled 'Vachel Lindsay: A Poet in America'. In 1915, Lindsay gave a poetry reading to President Woodrow Wilson and the entire Cabinet. Lindsay was well known throughout the nation, and especially in Illinois, because of his travels which were sometimes recorded in the front page of every newspaper.
He is probably best known for this poetic apostrophe to the Salvation Army in "General William Booth Enters Heaven," although it is questionable whether he ever made it past the pearly Gates himself, since he not only liked boys too much , but also ended his days a suicide.
In his 40s, Lindsay lost his heart to the dazzlingly good-looking Australian composer and pianist, Percy Grainger, as had the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg before him.
Lindsay killed himself (horribly, swallowing Lysol) in 1931, the year before Hart Crane leapt into the sea. His only biography was published during the Eisenhower years, a decade before homosexuality was officially invented. If it took biographers almost a century to acknowledge Whitman's Gayness, Lindsay should be due for a really serious biography around 2021.
Lindsay is credited with having "discovered" the poet Langston Hughes while staying at the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. Lindsay was dining in the hotel restaurant and the young Hughes was his busboy. When Hughes came to take his food away he left a number of his poems at Lindsay's table. Lindsay, upon reading them, was moved to declare the next day in his daily column to having "discovered a great Negro American poet." It launched Hughes' career.
1913 – James Broughton (d.1999) was an American poet, and poetic filmmaker. He was part of the San Francisco Renaissance. He was an early bard of the Radical Faeries as well as a charter member of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence serving her community as Sister Sermonetta.
Born to wealthy parents, he lost his father early to the 1918 influenza epidemic and spent the rest of his life getting over his high-strung, overbearing mother.
Before he was three, "Sunny Jim" experienced a transformational visit from his muse, Hermy, which he describes in his autobiography, Coming Unbuttoned (1993):
I remember waking in the dark and hearing my parents arguing in the next room. But a more persistent sound, a kind of whirring whistle, spun a light across the ceiling. I stood up in my crib and looked into the backyard. Over a neighbor's palm tree a pulsing headlamp came whistling directly toward me. When it had whirled right up to my window, out of its radiance stepped a naked boy. He was at least three years older than I but he looked all ages at once. He had no wings, but I knew he was angel-sent: his laughing beauty illuminated the night and his melodious voice enraptured my ears ... He insisted I would always be a poet even if I tried not to be ... Despite what I might hear to the contrary the world was not a miserable prison, it was a playground for a nonstop tournament between stupidity and imagination. If I followed the game sharply enough, I could be a useful spokesman for Big Joy.
Broughton was kicked out of military school for having an affair with a classmate, dropped out of Stanford before graduating, and spent time in Europe during the 1950s, where he received an award in Cannes from Jean Cocteau for the "poetic fantasy" of his film The Pleasure Garden, made in England with partner Kermit Sheets.
"Cinema saved me from suicide when I was 32 by revealing to me a wondrous reality: the love between fellow artists," Broughton wrote. This theme carried him through his 85 years. "It was as important to live poetically as to write poems."
Despite many love affairs during the San Francisco Beat Scene, Broughton put off marriage until age 49, when, steeped in his explorations of Jungian psychology, he married Susanna Hart in a three-day ceremony on the Pacific coast documented by his friend, the experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage. Susanna's theatrical background and personality made for a great playmate; they had two children. And they built a great community among the creative spirits of San Francisco.
In 1967s "summer of love," Broughton made a film, The Bed, a celebration of the dance of life which broke taboos against frontal nudity and won prizes at many film festivals. It rekindled Broughton's filmmaking and led to more tributes to the human body (The Golden Positions), the eternal child (This Is It), the eternal return (The Water Circle), the eternal moment (High Kukus), and the eternal feminine (Dreamwood). "These eternalities praised the beauty of humans, the surprises of soul, and the necessity of merriment," Broughton wrote.
In the Coming Unbuttoned, Broughton remarks on his love affairs with both men and women. Among his male lovers was gay activist Harry Hay.
Hermy appeared again to the older Broughton in the person of a twenty-five-year-old Canadian film student named Joel Singer. Broughton's meeting with Singer was a life-changing, life-determining moment that animated his consciousness with a power that lasted until his death. In Joel Singer he found a creative as well as emotional partner.
With Singer, Broughton traveled and made more films - Hermes Bird (1979), a slow-motion look at an erection shot with the camera developed to photograph atomic bomb explosions, The Gardener of Eden (1981), filmed when they lived in Sri Lanka, Devotions (1983), which takes delight in friendly things men can do together from the odd to the rapturous, and Scattered Remains (1988), a cheerfully death-obsessed tribute to Broughton's poetry and filmmaking.
He died in May, 1999 with champagne on his lips, in the house in Port Townsend, Washington where he and Joel lived for 10 years. Before he died, he said, "My creeping decrepitude has crept me all the way to the crypt." His gravestone in a Port Townsend cemetery reads, "Adventure - not predicament."
God and Fuck belong together Both are sacred and profane God (the Divine) a dirty word used for damning Fuck (the sublime) a dirty term of depredation God and Fuck are so much alike they might be synonymous glories I'd even go so far as to say God is the Fuck of all Fucks And boy He has a Body like you've never seen - From Special Deliveries by James Broughton
Richard Burton (R) with Elizabeth Taylor
1925 – Richard Burton, CBE (born Richard Walter Jenkins Jr.;d.1984) was a Welsh actor. Noted for his mellifluous baritone voice, Burton established himself as a formidable Shakespearean actor in the 1950s, and he gave a memorable performance of Hamlet in 1964. He was called "the natural successor to Olivier" by critic and dramaturge Kenneth Tynan. An alcoholic, Burton's failure to live up to those expectations disappointed critics and colleagues and fuelled his legend as a great thespian wastrel.
Burton was nominated for an Academy Award seven times, but never won an Oscar. He was a recipient of BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Tony Awards for Best Actor. In the mid-1960s, Burton ascended into the ranks of the top box office stars. By the late 1960s, Burton was one of the highest-paid actors in the world, receiving fees of $1 million or more plus a share of the gross receipts. Burton remains closely associated in the public consciousness with his second wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor. The couple's turbulent relationship was rarely out of the news.
Burton was married five times, twice consecutively to Taylor. From 1949 until 1963, he was married to Sybil Williams. His marriages to Taylor lasted from 15 March 1964 to 26 June 1974 and from 10 October 1975 to 29 July 1976. Their first wedding was at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Montreal. Of their marriage, Taylor proclaimed, "I'm so happy you can't believe it. This marriage will last forever." Their second wedding took place sixteen months after their divorce, in Chobe National Park in Botswana. Taylor and Eddie Fisher adopted a daughter from Germany, Maria Burton (born 1 August 1961), who was re-adopted by Burton after he and Taylor married. Burton also re-adopted Taylor and producer Mike Todd's daughter, Elizabeth Frances "Liza" Todd (born 6 August 1957), who had been first adopted by Fisher.
Burton acknowledged homosexual experiences as a young actor on the London stage in the 1950s. In a February 1975 interview with his friend, David Lewin, he said he "tried" homosexuality. He also suggested that perhaps all actors were latent homosexuals, and "we cover it up with drink". In 2000 Ellis Amburn's biography of Elizabeth Taylor suggested that Burton had an affair with Laurence Olivier and tried to seduce Eddie Fisher, although this was strongly denied by Burton's younger brother Graham Jenkins.
1955 – Roland Emmerich is a German film director, screenwriter, and producer. His films, most of which are Hollywood productions filmed in English, have grossed more than $3 billion worldwide, more than those of any other European director. His films have grossed just over $1 billion in the United States, making him the country's 14th-highest grossing director of all time.
He began his work in the film industry by directing the film The Noah's Ark Principle as part of his university thesis and also co-founded Centropolis Entertainment in 1985 with his sister. He is a collector of art and an active campaigner for the lesbian and gay community, himself being openly gay. He is also a campaigner for an awareness of global warming and equal rights.
in 1990, Emmerich was hired to replace director Andrew Davis for the action movie Universal Soldier. The film was released in 1992, and has since been followed by two direct-to-video sequels, a theatrical sequel, and another sequel released in 2010.
Emmerich next helmed the 1994 science-fiction film Stargate. At the time, it set a record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film released in the month of October. It became more commercially successful than most film industry insiders had anticipated, and spawned a highly popular media franchise.
Emmerich then directed Independence Day, an alien invasion feature that became the first film to gross $100 million in less than a week and went on to become one of the most successful films of all time. His next film, the much-hyped Godzilla, did not meet its anticipated box office success and was largely panned by critics. Taking a short break from science-fiction, Emmerich next directed the American Revolutionary War film The Patriot.
After teaming up with new writing partner Harald Kloser, Emmerich returned once again to directing a visual effects-laden adventure with 2004's The Day After Tomorrow. Soon afterwards, he founded Reelmachine, another film production company based in Germany.
Emmerich's most recent efforts have been 10,000 BC, a film about the journeys of a prehistoric tribe, and 2012, an apocalyptic film inspired by the theory that the Mayans prophesied the world's ending in 2012.
In 2006, he pledged $150,000 to the Legacy Project, a campaign dedicated to Gay and Lesbian film preservation. Emmerich, who is openly Gay, made the donation on behalf of Outfest, making it the largest gift in the festival's history.
1986 – Andy Mientus is an American stage and television actor. He is known for his role as Kyle Bishop in the television series Smash.
Mientus has toured with the first national touring company of Spring Awakening as Hanschen and appeared in the 2012 Off-Broadway revival of Carrie: The Musical.
In 2013, Mientus was cast in season two of the musical drama television series Smash as series regular Kyle Bishop. Following the cancellation of Smash, Mientus and co-stars Jeremy Jordan and Krysta Rodriguez joined the cast of Hit List, the real-world staging of the fictional rock musical created for season two of Smash. The show ran for three performances on December 8—9 at 54 Below.
Mientus made his Broadway debut in the 2014 revival of Les Misérables as Marius.
In 2014, Mientus appeared in several episodes of the ABC Family series Chasing Life. That same year, he was cast in a recurring role on the CW series The Flash as the Pied Piper.
Mientus is openly bisexual. He is engaged to fellow Broadway actor Michael Arden. Mientus and Arden both planned to propose to each other on the same exact day while on a trip in England. Michael had planned a scavenger hunt for Andy to complete and eventually lead to a proposal. However, Andy was able to execute his proposal first. Andy's proposal was a video of a young boy talking about marriage which quickly cut to all of their friends saying why Michael should say yes. The couple set the wedding to take place Autumn of 2015.
1992 – The Louisiana Baptist Convention voted 581-199 to exclude congregations which condone homosexuality. A similar resolution was approved the same day by the North Carolina State Baptist convention.

Kai Wegner, Berlin’s conservative mayor, recently embraced the antisemitic conspiracy theorist Elon Musk. But Wegner’s relationship to Berlin’s former interior senator Heinrich Lummer raises even more questions. Heinrich Lummer, West Berlin’s interior senator from 1981 to 1986, has largely been forgotten. At most, a scandal or two from the conservative politician’s time in office has remained in the city’s collective memory. For years, the staunch anti-communist had an affair with an agent from East Germany’s Ministry for State Security (Stasi), making himself vulnerable to blackmail. In 1981, Lummer ordered the eviction of eight squats, during which the 19-year-old squatter Klaus-Jürgen Rattay was pushed under the wheels of a bus and died. A handmade memorial plaque in the sidewalk at Potsdamer Straße 125 still commemorates his death. Lummer’s career came to an end in 1986 due to a realty scandal. It was later revealed that the right-wing hardliner had allegedly donated thousands of marks to right-wing extremists in 1971. Today, one influential Berlin politician thinks this resume deserves admiration. After Lummer’s death in 2019, Kai Wegner wrote: “He was a strong personality in the Berlin CDU.” Wegner said Lummer was “unforgotten”: “Many will remember him as someone who consistently enforced internal security and order,” the Facebook post reads. “This didn’t just win him friends, but it showed his clear stance.” Today, the writer of that obituary is mayor of Berlin. Lummer stood out with one topic in particular since the end of the 1990s: his hatred of Jews. In 1997, Lummer spoke out against Jewish immigration to the Federal Republic of Germany in the Ostpreußenblatt, today called the Preußische Allgemeine Zeitung. The country already had too many foreigners — and its foreign policy on questions relating to Israel was largely “determined by others.” Lummer’s antisemitism was so clear that he was denied entry to Israel in 1998. The following year, in an interview with the right-wing newspaper Junge Freiheit, he said the Berlin Holocaust memorial had only been built due to pressure from the “American East Coast.” In another interview, he wondered if forced labor under the Nazis had really been “so terrible and low-paid.” After all, “there has always been forced labor in the context of war.” When CDU politician Martin Hohmann (now AfD) gave an antisemitic speech in 2003, Lummer was one of the initiators of a solidarity declaration. Further right-wing bugaboos completed Lummer’s world view. In 1999, again in the Ostpreußenblatt, he wrote that the German people were in danger of disappearing due to mass immigration, encouraged by foreign powers. Today, this far-right conspiracy theory is known as the “Great Replacement.” In 2001, Lummer signed a petition in support of Götz Kubitschek, today an ideologue of the neo-fascist Right, and in 2006, he signed another petition for Junge Freiheit. None of this is a secret. Lummer’s Wikipedia page in German contains an entire section on his antisemitism. How does Wegner respond?

A-T-4 005 Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4
I'm going straight in with what is probably the most enduring and influential pieces of electronic ambient music of 1984. Of all of Manuel Göttsching's compositions E2-E4 was one that has crossed over to fans of Dub Reggae, Disco, Prog Rock, Techno, Vapour Wave, and a many more musical styles
Any nerd will tell you it was recorded in December 1981 but it didn't see a release date until 1984. E2-E4 is a performance recorded for himself in a single take one December evening. Its intention was to help Göttsching wind down from a recent long tour. "“I was flying to Hamburg the next day and I thought I’d record something to listen to on my Walkman during the flight,” says Göttsching. The piece was improvised and entirely in the moment."[2] There was something about the recording that he couldn't just shelve alongside the many other tapes he'd made for this purpose over the years, he knew he'd hit on something different and special. In interviews from the late 2010s Göttsching continually highlights his delight at how well the recording had come out from a technical point of view. When a friend said he would love to release something by him on their new independent record label E2-E4 was ready to go. Göttsching was a key member of Ash Ra Tempel and he released solo work as Ashra he decided not to do that with E2-E4 and for the first time puts something out under his own name
The initial reaction in Berlin was negative, it was described as "muzak"[2]. In a 2019 interview with LoudAnd Quiet, Göttsching said "“The newspapers said I have not understood anything in the modern developments of electronic music,” Göttsching says of the initial reactions from Germany. “They said I should better listen to Depeche Mode.” The Berlin Magazine apologised to Göttsching a decade later, saying they probably made a big mistake."[1] Luckily E2-E4 was picked up by djs in New York, all articles point at Larry Levan introducing it into the New York club scene of the 1980s. “I was a bit surprised people were actually dancing to it,” says Göttsching now. “I didn’t record it in the sense of a dance piece. The drums were very in the background, and it’s not really a ‘bom bom bom’ bass”[1]
Like many people I first heard E2-E4 when it was used as the backbone of 1989 italo house classic Sueno Latino. It was hidden in plain sight as Balearic Mike discovers "One early Italian pressing [of Sueno Latino] on DFC even names the track, E2-E4"[3]
Manuel Göttsching died just over a-year-ago on December 4, 2022
Last year the supermarket chain ASDA did a range of homewares, duvets/bathmats/etc in a checkerboard with the same coffee and cream colour way that the sleeve of E2-E4 has, it reminded me of the record
It's a stunning piece of music. Hear it in its entirety below

Last weekend I went to see an special exhibit of LGBT history in Germany that was at the National Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism - aka - The NAZI Museum. While the #LGBT history was interesting, what was most surprising and troubling i found in the permanent exhibit there is that the Nazi movement and rise to power is an absolute roadmap for what is occurring in the United States today. Here are some excerpts from the permanent exhibit that certainly opened my eyes, and I hope will open others as well: "The Party could call on the support of influential backers within the city’s ethnic chauvinistic and antisemitic networks. Incendiary dogma and violent rhetoric shaped the party’s public image and the fire brand Hitler drew masses of listeners. Incendary dogma went hand in hand with the rhetorical kind. A troop of young men, a para-military storm battalion (SA), ostensibly founded to ‘provide security at public events’, flexed their muscles and tried to attract attention by brawling in auditoriums, staging marches and engaging in militant acts of provocation. ...One key to Hitler success was the support from well educated and wealthy bourgeois circles. Respected families arranged contacts and made money available. With the help of donations and financial guarantees the NAZI party acquired the “Peoples Observer”, which gave the Hitler movement its own newspaper. ...Despite being inspired by militant masculine ideology and dominated by men, the Nazi movement could also draw on the support of women from the ethnic chauvinistic milieu. This image, taken at a 1923 meeting, with the number of respectable middle and upper class people in the audience, suggests the Nazi party was broadly accepted. ...The Nazi party’s path to power was not inevitable, triumphant march. The defensive measures of the state and civilian resistance never came together to form an effective counter-force. The Weimar Republic failed because people didn't oppose extremism vigorously enough." (at NS-Dokumentationszentrum München) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cry1N3XOnFG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Antisemitic Images of Jews Conspiring
6-II Antisemitic Images of Jews Conspiring
The theme of Jewish conspiracy recurs often in antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.
In figurines such as those shown here, Jewish "types" share business secrets.
A more sinister conspiracy is outlined in The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a forged treatise first published in Russia in 1903.
It purports to uncover a plot by leaders of world Jewry to dominate the economy, the press, and politics.
The tract has been published in many languages-including a 1912 English edition published under the auspices of carmaker Henry Ford—and persists as an influential work of antisemitic propaganda today.

Henry Ford
from The New Vulgate:
Henry Ford was a nut.
But he was an ungodly rich American nut, and when he got a bug up his butt, he had the resources to do something about it.
He started his own newspaper, The Dearborn Independent, and when that was insufficient for spreading the hot news about the Hebrew-haters preferred hoax, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” he distributed it through Ford dealerships and had it translated into German.
When he decided he needed a dam, he hired forty Negroes to dig him one, specifying an all-colored crew to his contractor, then had them knock off work to sing him Stephen Foster songs — he was especially fond of “Old Black Joe” and “Old Kentucky Home.”
Once he decided that the contemporary world had gone to hell in a handbasket, he set himself up with a Never-Never Land right there in Dearborn and named it Greenfield Village.
It was a psychic twin to John D. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller's Colonial Williamsburg (and both places were kin to Walt Disney's seven-eighths scaled Main Street USA, with its banjo-spanking Dixieland band, striped coats and straw hats direct from the blackface minstrel walkaround.)
These were industrialist fantasies of pre-industrial feudal villages — once she'd presided over the founding of the Museum of Modern Art, Mrs. Rockefeller sent forth her minions, collectors who would shortly be dubbed "curators" and they worked New England and the Mid-Atlantic states the way maidenly New Englanders were working the mountains of the South, hunting for the pure and the purer.
Her employees gathered up weather vanes and quilts, pried Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs off the front of barns, loaded trucks with cigar-store Indians and sewing baskets and duck decoys, each and every one of them by that celebrated and super-prolific folk artiste "Anonymous."
Then she commissioned her curators to come up with a definition of "folk art" that would fit a collection that included no totem poles or kachinas or Navajo blankets or santos or bultos or bottle trees or wrought iron work or anything else made by anyone who wasn't rustic, white, and located on the eastern seaboard.
Mary Black, the director of Abby's collection, declared, "The genesis, rise and disappearance of folk art is closely connected with the events of the 19th Century when the dissolution of the old ways left rural folk everywhere with an unused surplus of time and energy."
It was a theory to warm the heart of any Rockefeller.
Henry Ford, on the other hand, was a nouveau riche buttinski who supplied his own damn theories, and plenty of 'em.
He turned collectors of his own loose, hunting for backwoods fiddlers who could remember the words and melodies of the old tunes, the fiddle tunes that were American's true pure heritage.
He set himself up a dance hall in his factory's Engineering Lab, with his fiddle-and-dulcimer orchestra on hand at all times.
He hired a dance instructor and produced a book, Good Morning — After a Sleep of 25 Years Old-Fashioned Dancing Is Being Revived by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford, then distributed hundreds of thousands of copies, just as he did with the Protocols.
The book's rules of etiquette were as rigid and unwavering as a manual for a mass-production line.
By now, Henry Ford had dance fever.
He traveled the country preaching the gospel of his square-danced etiquette.
At his factory, engineers were constantly being dragged onto the dance floor, and on his Georgia plantation, Negro children were taught the polka.
He created his own record label for "Henry Ford's Old Time Dance Orchestra."
When his collectors brought Stradivarius violins for his approval, he'd saw off a fiddle tune, then write a check.
He purchased the cottage where Stephen Foster was born and had it moved to Greenfield Village.
He bought a Cape Cod windmill, and English shepherd's cottage, the schoolhouse where the author of McGuffey's Reader swatted his first sleeping students, the Springfield courthouse where Abe Lincoln lost his first court case and the Ford's Theater chair Lincoln was sitting in when John Wilkes Booth shot him.
He came within days and dimes of buying a pickled corpse alleged to be Booth.
He tried to have Foster's Old Dog Tray exhumed and stuffed but the operation was a failure.
He purchased a dozen railroad cars of research on the folkloric history of "Mary Had A Little Lamb."
(The poem's author died at seventeen, the lamb was gored by a cow, and Mary herself ended up in an asylum.)
Henry Ford had hated farm life when he was a boy stuck on a farm, and he invented his way out of it — a couple of ways.
Late on a night in 1936, one of the many family acts who were making it through the Depression off country music drove down a Michigan road trying to find a tourist court so they could sleep.
It was the Rhodes Family — brother Speck Rhodes would play bass with Porter Wagoner for many years, all the while playing the Toby role, a black-toothed rube variant from the minstrel days, the white Jim Crow, the Arkansas Traveler's squatter.
Exhausted, they found a country road — it sure seemed like a country road — so they pulled over and slept in the car.
A guard woke them in the morning; they had spent the night in Henry Ford's driveway.
He'd let them stay there because they drove a Ford.
"Sure enough," says Speck's brother Dusty, "…here comes Henry Ford with two bodyguards. He was a real nice fellow and after we talked to him for a while he asked us to plays some music. He really did like country music."
He asked Dusty Rhodes if he wanted to play one of his fiddles, then sent the servants to fetch it.
"This is a genuine Stradivarius violin," Ford told him, "and is worth $150,000."
He asked me if I would play 'Red Wing' for him because that was his favorite fiddle tune. So I played 'Red Wing' and several other tunes for him on that Stradivarius fiddle."
Ford sure did love country music.
"Red Wing" had been written and published in 1907 by Tin Pan Alley's Kerry Mills, author of "Rastus On Parade" and of "At A Georgia Camp Meeting" as well, the biggest cakewalk hit of the whole coon song era.
Mills had been head of the violin department of the University of Michigan School of Music; he'd snagged the melody, all too appropriately, from Schumann's "The Merry Peasant."
To this day, "Red Wing" is known as an old fiddle tune.
(My mom, Lawrence Welk's cousin, Francesca Schweitzer Bull, has always played it oom-pah accordion style on the organ, but that's pretty much how she plays everything.)
It is an old fiddle tune, just as it was in 1937, maybe just as it was by 1908.
The vogue for coon songs was cooling down, and a brief fad for frontier Indian romance numbers came and went.
It was a coon song of a different sort, and Henry Ford was right.
It was country music, just as his driveway was close enough to a country road to fool country folks in a country band.
Henry Ford, the man who killed off the horse-and-buggy-era, once the fastest man in the world, died by the light of a coal lamp.
And that $150,000 fiddle of his? "Well," says Dusty Rhodes, "I have to admit that I didn't like it any better than the one Daddy made for me."

Learn German Faster Than You Think With These 5 Simple Tips
Learning German provides many benefits beyond being able to communicate with over 100 million native speakers worldwide. German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and is an official language in six European countries. Mastering German allows greater opportunities for travel, study, and business throughout Europe. German is also considered one of the most influential languages in fields like science, research, philosophy, engineering, and technology.
Knowing German opens doors to understanding important German thinkers and writers throughout history. From Luther and Goethe to Marx and Nietzsche, German has profoundly shaped human thought and culture. Germany has the largest national economy in Europe and the fourth largest in the world, making German a valuable language for international business. With large immigrant populations, German is also widely spoken in the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and beyond. Overall, learning German provides significant social, cultural, academic, and professional benefits.
Set Goals for Learning
Before diving into learning German, it's important to take some time to think about your motivations and set clear goals. Having a purpose will help you stay focused and motivated as you progress through your language-learning journey.
Consider why you want to learn German. Are you learning for travel, work opportunities, connecting with family or friends, or simply for the personal enrichment of learning a new language? Setting both short-term and long-term goals can help guide your study plan. For example, you may want to have a basic conversational level within 6 months and achieve fluency within a few years.
Think about how you will use your new language skills. Do you need to learn business German for your career? Or focus more on everyday German for travel? Your goals will likely influence what vocabulary and language skills you prioritize.
Setting measurable goals like "I want to be able to read a German newspaper article" or "I want to pass the German language exam" can give you motivation and a sense of accomplishment as you reach each milestone. Review your goals regularly and adjust them as you gain proficiency.
Having clear goals and reasons for learning will help you stay determined to continue practicing German regularly. Language learning takes time and dedication, so keep your motivation front of mind as you get started.
Choose a Study Method
When learning German, you'll need to decide whether you want to self-study or take a class. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages to consider.
Self-Study
Self-studying gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace, on your own schedule. You can choose study materials and methods that fit your learning style and needs. Self-study works well if you're disciplined and motivated to learn independently.
The downside is you lose out on speaking practice and direct feedback. It can be challenging to stay motivated when studying alone. You'll need to find ways to immerse yourself in the language, such as through apps, media, events, or conversation partners.
Taking a Class
Enrolling in a class provides structure and accountability. Teachers guide you through the curriculum, provide feedback, and answer questions. Classes allow you to practice speaking with classmates. The social element can boost motivation. German classes in Jalandhar
However, you'll need to keep pace with the class and schedule. This allows less flexibility compared to self-directed learning. Class sizes and quality can vary greatly, so research options thoroughly. Private tutoring provides the most focused instruction.
Overall, classroom learning tends to provide a strong foundation through systematic lessons and speaking practice. However, self-study can supplement classes and continue language growth through immersion. Consider your learning preferences, needs, and access when choosing between self-study and classes for learning German.
Find Resources
There are many great resources available to help you learn German. Here are some of the best:
Books
Beginner books like Schaum's Outlines and Teach Yourself German provide lessons on grammar, vocabulary, and conversation skills. They come with audio samples and exercises.
Once you reach an intermediate level, try reading graded readers. These are books written specifically for German learners, using limited vocabulary and grammar. Popular series include Penguin Parallel Texts and Olly Richards 101 Conversations.
Traditional novels, newspapers, magazines, and non-fiction books are great ways to expand vocabulary and comprehension. Try young adult books or modern bestsellers first before tackling the classics.
Apps
Babbel and Duolingo are free apps with interactive lessons in vocabulary, grammar, listening, and speaking. Their spaced repetition methods help reinforce retention.
Clozemaster focuses specifically on building vocabulary through contextual sentences. You can set it to German from English or vice versa.
Tandem connects you with native German speakers for text and voice chat practice. You help them learn English in exchange.
Videos
Easy German and Learn German with Anja have YouTube channels with clear, slow German explanations of language, culture, and pronunciation. Turn on subtitles.
Deutsche Welle and ARD Mediathek have news videos, documentaries, shows, and movies to help with listening comprehension. Start with content aimed at learners.
Podcasts
Coffee Break German has lessons organized by level that combine instruction with immersion.
Slow German provides a clear narration of interesting content to practice listening skills.
Einfach Deutsch has short stories read aloud, along with transcripts to follow along.
Learn the Basics
The German alphabet contains the same 26 letters as English, but there are some key differences in pronunciation. Four vowels in German can have umlauts (two dots above them) - ä, ö, ü, and ß. The ß is called Eszett or scharfes S and makes a 'ss' sound.
German has consistent pronunciation rules, so once you learn them you'll be able to sound out most words. Here are some key guidelines:
Vowels are generally pure sounds, pronounced clearly and fully.
Consonants at the ends of words are usually not voiced, like the 't' in bitte.
The 'r' is rolled or guttural, unlike the American 'r'.
'ch' makes a throat-clearing sound, like in 'Bach'.
'ie' makes a long 'e' sound, while 'ei' and 'eu' make long 'i' sounds.
German grammar has some notable differences from English:
It has 4 grammatical cases - nominative, accusative, dative, and genitive. Word endings change based on the case.
It has 3 grammatical genders - masculine, feminine, and neuter. Articles and adjective endings reflect the gender.
The verb comes second in a sentence, after the subject.
It has more complex rules for modal verbs like können, müssen, and wollen.
There are no progressive verb tenses like 'I am learning' - add time words instead.
Getting familiar with the alphabet, key sounds, grammar rules, and sentence structure will provide a solid base for learning vocabulary, conversing, and becoming fluent. Start with the fundamentals and build from their German course online.
Build Vocabulary
Building vocabulary is essential for learning any new language. Here are some effective strategies for growing your German vocabulary:
Use flashcards and spaced repetition. Flashcards are one of the most tried-and-true vocabulary-building techniques. Write the German word on one side and the English translation on the reverse. Go through your deck regularly, removing cards as you master them. Spaced repetition techniques like Anki use algorithms to optimize when you review words.
Learn words in context. Don't just memorize individual words - learn common phrases and expressions too. This gives you a better sense of how vocabulary is used in real-world situations. Read German books, news, or blogs to pick up vocabulary in context.
Learn word families and roots. Many German words share the same roots and components. Learning-related words together makes them easier to remember. For example "der Arm" is "arm", "der Alarm" is "alarm".
Use mnemonic devices. Memory tricks like acronyms, rhymes, and associations can help cement new vocab. Come up with silly sentences or images to link the German word to the English.
Label household objects. Put sticky notes on objects around your home or office and write the German word. Seeing the words repeatedly throughout your day aids memorization.
Listen to German radio or TV. Hearing vocabulary used in audio format helps reinforce proper pronunciation while growing your knowledge.
Keep a vocabulary journal. Jot down new words and review frequently. Grouping words by theme (food, family, etc) can help retention.
Prioritizing frequent, useful vocabulary and utilizing a variety of memorization techniques ensures steady growth of your German language skills. With consistent practice, your vocabulary knowledge will flourish.
Improve Listening Skills
Listening comprehension is essential for learning any language. Here are some tips for understanding spoken German:
Listen to German radio stations, podcasts, movies, TV shows, music, and audiobooks. The more you listen, the more your ear becomes attuned to German speech patterns. Start with content made for language learners, then progressively move to native content.
Use transcripts when possible. Reading a transcript while listening helps associate sounds with spellings. Transcripts are often available for learning programs, podcasts, and more.
Focus on common words first. Learn the 100 most common German words and phrases. You'll start recognizing these in speech, making conversations easier to follow.
Don't get frustrated. Spoken German may seem fast at first. With practice, your listening comprehension will improve. Be patient with yourself.
Repeat out loud. Imitate the speech patterns and pronunciation. This helps build muscle memory for your mouth and ears.
Pick up on visual cues. Facial expressions, gestures, and context from the surroundings can provide extra clues to meaning.
Learn idioms and slang. These give insight into the language as it's authentically used. Watching German TV helps.
Practice every day. The more you listen, the faster your listening comprehension will improve. Even 15 minutes daily can make a difference.
With dedicated listening practice using these tips, you'll start understanding spoken German more easily, paving the way for fluent conversation. Be patient, keep exposing yourself to the language, and your listening skills will improve dramatically.
Practice Speaking
Speaking the German language out loud is one of the most important parts of learning it. The sooner you start practicing speaking, the faster you'll become conversational. Here are some tips:
Repeat out loud after any audio you listen to in German. Shadow the pronunciation and inflection you hear from native speakers. This trains your mouth and vocal cords to produce the unique sounds of German.
Read out loud to yourself in German. Look up proper pronunciation for unfamiliar words. Hearing yourself speak German will help with memorization.
Speak to language apps that listen and respond to your German speech. Receiving feedback on pronunciation helps you improve. Apps like Duolingo have useful voice interaction exercises.
Rehearse basic conversations out loud, pretending you're ordering food or asking for directions. The more you act out real-world situations, the more prepared you'll be to have conversations.
Find a language partner to practice conversations with, either in person or remotely. Having back-and-forth exchanges in German is extremely valuable. Sites like Tandem let you find partners.
Look for local German meetup groups or clubs in your city. These provide great low-pressure environments to try speaking German with sympathetic native speakers.
The key is to start vocalizing German as much as possible from the very beginning of your learning. This will help internalize the language and make you comfortable speaking it. Don't be afraid to make mistakes - just open your mouth and start talking!
Immersion Opportunities
Immersing yourself in the German language and culture is one of the most effective ways to accelerate your learning. Here are some ideas for immersion:
Language Exchanges
Language exchanges allow you to practice speaking German with a native speaker who wants to learn your native language. You can find exchange partners through apps, websites, or local language groups. Set aside 30-60 minutes to chat in each language and correct each other's mistakes. This is a great way to gain speaking confidence.
Study Abroad
Studying abroad in Germany is an incredible way to quickly achieve fluency. Full immersion forces you to rely on your German constantly. Look for study abroad programs through your school or trusted providers. Programs range from 2 weeks to a full semester or year. Consider options that include homestays and language classes.
Media Consumption
Surround yourself with German media to passively learn while being entertained. Watch German TV shows and movies on Netflix or YouTube. Listen to German music, radio stations, and podcasts. Read German books, magazines, newspapers, and websites. Media consumption boosts vocabulary and listening comprehension. Start with content made for learners then work your way up.
Immersing yourself in German language environments accelerates the learning process. Look for exchange partners, study abroad opportunities, and German media to boost your skills.
Stay Motivated
Learning a new language takes time and dedication. Here are some tips to stay motivated:
Set Goals
Set small, achievable goals like learning 5 new words per day or having a 5-minute conversation. Meeting goals gives a sense of accomplishment.
Have larger milestones too like being able to read a short story or watch a TV show. This gives you something to work towards.
Find a Study Buddy
Find a friend or language partner to study with. You can quiz each other, practice conversing, and keep each other accountable.
Join an online community or local meetup group to connect with other language learners. Having a support network helps motivation.
Make It Fun
Incorporate activities you enjoy like listening to music, watching movies, cooking, or reading books in German. This makes studying less of a chore.
Play language learning games, use flashcard apps, or join competitive sites to add an element of fun.
Occasionally reward yourself when you meet a milestone, like treating yourself to a meal at a German restaurant.
Staying motivated to learn a language takes effort but is achievable. Setting goals, finding support, and making learning fun and rewarding will help you power through the challenges. Consistency and dedication will pay off in your journey to fluency.

2023 / 42 - Brief compromise edition (and belated - sorry...)
Aperçu of the Week:
"If Europe occupies a unique position in contemporary world politics, it is that of a consistent defender of international law."
(Stephen M. Walt, 68, is among the most influential U.S. experts on international relations, researching primarily American foreign policy. And hopefully is right).
Bad News of the Week:
The Left (Die Linke), a social democratic party with socialist leanings, is dying. Originally a GDR legacy from the East, it merged with renegades from the Social Democratic Party of Germany SPD and seemed to consolidate nationwide. All was going well under its illustrious leaders, Gregor Gysi from the East and Oskar Lafontaine from the West. Then they withdrew, the glamour was lost, and a single figurehead remained. Sahra Wagenknecht. But she was and is a "free radical," as they would say in chemistry. For a long time now, the chemistry has not been right between her and the official leaders of the party.
Now Wagenknecht is striving to found her own party. Initially, an association "BSG - Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht" (Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht) is on the agenda. This is to form the formal basis of a later party. The goal: next year's European elections. In which, in contrast to other elections in Germany, there is no 5 % threshold - but none. An ego trip by Wagenknecht. But it will pull the plug on the Left Party. Its chairman, Dietmar Bartsch, is allegedly already talking about it being time to "bury the party with dignity".
A decisive factor in the decline of The Left is also linked to the rise of another party: protest voters. For a long time, these voters saw The Left as a counter to "the established parties up there. This position has now been taken over by the right-wing populist AfD. Yes, even in the official program of The Left there were and are things like "Leave NATO" or "Expropriate banks." But all of this smacks of naïve idealism that never makes it into real political responsibility. After all, the leftists who have sat in real positions of power over the years (like Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow) were clearly more pragmatic than the ideological superstructure. But the voice of social conscience, which is good for any society, will be missed.
Good News of the Week:
When something is called "the British model," Europeans' foreheads tend to furrow: Left-hand traffic, lukewarm mint sauce and Brexit. But now I've come across a handling on the island that I think is great. It's all about culture, which is always and absolutely worth mentioning. And good - when it comes to easy access to it.
The British model in this case means that permanent exhibitions in museums are free, while special exhibitions cost money (which is, after all, needed in the culture business). Now this model is being adopted in mainland Europe. Namely, in the Austrian capital, where after more than three years of reconstruction work, the new "Vienna Museum" will reopen in the metropolis of the same name.
Mayor Michael Ludwig announced this with obvious pride: "A historic step," he said. There was talk of a "day of joy for everyone". He is right. And I hope that Munich's mayor Dieter Reiter will soon be able to use a similar vocabulary. Because this is a model that I consider absolutely "worth copying". Even if that shouldn't really happen in art...
Personal happy moment of the week:
We were invited to a concert for next Friday. To a Bavarian veteran singer-songwriter, who is actually more of a cabaret artist: Georg Ringsgwandl. I haven't followed him for years, although I know him personally. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration. When he was getting big in the late 80s, I interviewed him at his home as editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. Let's see if he recognizes me when I wave excitedly at him from the 3rd row.
I couldn't care less...
...that in Switzerland the right-wing populist People's Party won the parliamentary elections - again. Because that reflects the soul of the Swiss people after all, who have been ticking like this since before the term "populist" was introduced into the language of politicians by Silvio Berlusconi. So, for once, there is no shift to the right in one of the European democracies. Because it was already right-wing before. I don't know whether to laugh or cry about this.
As I write this...
...autumn has arrived. It has become cold, the leaves are falling, the first birds are migrating to the south. Today, for the first time, I didn't ride my bike to the station because the rain was too heavy. "Winter is coming."
Post Scriptum
Taylor Swift develops more and more to a megastar. After the success in the charts and in the stadiums, she is also breaking records at the box office . And I - who was so happy about the new album of The Rolling Stones last week - rub my eyes in amazement. And realize that I have never heard a single song by the young lady. I think I'm going to change that. Otherwise, this would be the first pop-cultural phenomenon I wouldn't have the competence to brag about it. And I still feel too young for that.
