Portuguese Infantas, Maria Antónia (1862-1959), Marie Anne (1861-1942) and Adelgundes (1858-1946). Early 1880s.
They were the daughters of Dom Miguel I of Portugal and Princess Adelaide of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg.
Their father was the King of Portugal between 1828 and 1834, the seventh child and third son of King Jõao VI (John VI) and his queen, Carlota Joaquina of Spain.
Dom Miguel died in 1866. Adelaide, as a widow, secured advantageous marriages for their six daughters.
Maria Antonia married Robert, Duke of Parma in 1885 as his second wife and the couple produced twelve children, among Zita who became Empress of Austria after the death of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary.
Marie Anne married relatively late for age at nearly 32, Grand Duke William IV of Luxembourg and had six daughters. Her eldest daughter, Marie-Adéläide, who became Grand Duchess of Luxembourg after her father's death was forced to abdicate in 1919 for being Pro-German. Her second born daughter, Charlotte, became the next Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.
Adelgundes married in 1876 Prince Henry of Bourbon-Parma, Count of Bardi. Their union produced no issue, as her nine pregnancies all ended in miscarriages. The failed pregnancies, the last of which she suffered in 1890, were a source of great grief to the couple. They divided their time between the Castle of Seebenstein in Austria and the Vedndrami-Caligari palace in Venice. Adelgundes spent long years looking after her paralyzed husband. The Count of Bardi was described by relatives as a disagreeable man who tyrannized his sweet, petite wife. After almost 30 years of marriage, Adelgundes became a widow in 1905.
