16th July 1832 was a very sad day on Shetland when tragedy struck .
On tis day 31 Shetland "sixerns", the traditional fishing craft of Shetland and a total of 105 crewmen were lost in a storm.
There were between 300 and 500 sixareens or sixerns in Shetland. The Haaf fishing proved to be a hard life for these boats and they only tended to last 5 or 6 years. When they finished their lives as a fishing vessel some ended up being used as a flit boat for moving livestock, peats and other goods between islands or from ship to shore. The sixareens may eventually have ended up as the roof of shed or outbuilding. Nothing was ever wasted in Shetland, especially if it was wooden!
The men would travel up between 20 and 40 miles offshore. As the men were dealing with a prevailing wind, they could usually only sail in one direction. They were always happier if they could row out with a relatively light boat and sail back with a heavy load of fish!
When they reached the fishing grounds, the fishermen would barely be in sight of the highest hills in Shetland. They would have sea all around them.
Haaf fishing was very dangerous due to the unpredictable nature of the weather far out at sea. However, when you look at the numbers of men that fished and the length of time that they fished for, the actual disasters are relatively few.
On 16 July 1832 31 Shetland "sixareens" and a total of 105 crewmen were lost in a storm. The event is still remembered as "The Bad Day". A London Distress Fund was set up and raised the sum of £3000. The money was raised for the dependants of the crofter-fishermen lost. The crew of one boat in 1832, did manage a lucky escape from the storm as they were picked up by a passing American sloop. However, the Captain of the American vessel refused to alter his course to Philadelphia and so, despite passing close to Orkney, the survivors had to cross the Atlantic and endure a further six months away from home before returning.
During another storm on 20th July 1881, hurricane force winds caught the fishermen by surprise. The boats that tried to come home were mostly capsized or swamped, but those that stayed at their lines for the most part survived. In all ten boats foundered and 58 Haaf fishermen lost their lives. They left behind 34 widows and 85 orphans. Six of these boats and 36 of the men were from the fishing station at Gloup in North Yell. It was a tragic loss for a small community.
On the morning of 21st December 1900, boats from Firth, Mossbank and Toft set off for the winter haddock fishing. They were some 32 kilometres (20 miles) away, between the Horse of Burravpoe and Da Snap, when they were caught in a sudden and severe gale from the north-west.Many were lost during the storm which came on in the space of five minutes. The fleet were scattered. One made it to Whalsay, Skerries and Lunning but the rest were lost.
22 men were drowned, leaving 15 widows (5 of whom were pregnant), and 51 children. Firth was hit the hardest. Many of the men were great fishermen and the disaster devastated the Delting fishing industry, which never recovered. The women continued to work the crofts. Children grew up and moved away, leading to a rapid decline in population.
The plight of the families left destitute led to a lot of publicity in local and national press. The Delting Disaster Fund was set up to help those affected and it was one of Queen Victoria’s last public acts to appeal for support
These major fishing disasters signalled the beginning of the end for Haaf fishing. The herring fishery in the 1880s and the Crofter’s Act of 1886, which put an end to the truck system, were two more nails in its coffin.
Larger safer boats were introduced and undecked sixareens were replaced by fully decked smacks. Fishermen could finally install a few home comforts. However, when the steam trawler was introduced, longlining in large sailing boats couldn’t compete economically. Haaf fishing stopped quite quickly at this point.
There are few sixareens left in Shetland, a couple of replicas and bits and pieces lying around here and there. At the Shetland Museum and Archives there’s a replica sixareen called the Vaila Mae. She sails regularly in Lerwick Harbour and you can even get a trip on her during Shetland Boat Week!
One of the only surviving sixareens from the past can be seen in the Shetland Museum. She was built as the Foula mail boat, which fished for a little while and then ended up as a flit boat for shifting peats. She didn’t spend much of her life as a fishing sixareen.
You can find memorials all over Shetland to those lost at sea not just for the tragedies I have mentioned today but all in general, the Shetland way of life having strong heritage links with the sea that surrounds it.

no way is that ODESSA BRODY.. they're a 29-year-old SYNTH notoriously known for being HARSH & SELF-RIGHTEOUS but there are some people who have seen them being INDUSTRIOUS & SELF-SUFFICIENT. if you ask me, they remind me a lot of asking pointed questions, having a resting bitch face, and experiencing a meteoric rise in your career, but that could just be because they're considered the INTREPID REPORTER around town. just keep an eye on them & see if their true colors shine through..
All the girls that you've run dry have tired lifeless eyes 'Cause you burned them out But I took your matches before fire could catch me So don't look now I'm shining like fireworks over your sad empty town
OVERVIEW
Name: Odessa Victoria Brody
Nickname(s): Ody, Bitchessa (by Herc)
DOB: April 16, 2095
Age: 29
FC: Danielle Campbell
Height: 5'3"
Pronouns: She/Her
Sexuality: Bisexual
Occupation: News Anchor at First Light News Network
Relationship Status: Single (Closed)
[+] industrious, self-sufficient, candid [–] harsh, severe, self-righteous
BIOGRAPHY
Odessa is second youngest of five Synth children brought up by two scientists studying pair bonding. Her and her siblings were each created with carefully selected DNA, programmed to have a predisposition toward certain traits, and raised in a manner designed to encourage those traits.
Odessa was made to be dominant, independent, free-thinking, and unapologetic. She was largely left to her own devices, encouraged to make decisions about her life without much input from their parents; being rewarded when she showed initiative, and receiving little to no punishment for misbehaving.
Academically, it didn't take long for her to develop a reputation for being the one who always calls the shots. She took leadership roles in group projects, became the head of any club or extracurricular activity she joined, and even founded a number of them herself. This behaviour continued into college.
During her last year at university, she worked part-time at First Light News Network after having already been an intern there for several summers. She was offered a permanent position on the broadcast team once she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Economics.
From there, she quickly worked her way up to being an on-air reporter. She didn't always get assigned the most interesting stories, but at least she was putting her face on camera; and while she didn't rely on her looks to get ahead, she wasn't naive enough to think that they weren't a factor in her promotion.
The pivotal moment in her career occurred when her helicopter pilot suddenly lost consciousness during a routine traffic report. The entire city watched live as Odessa, with instructions from the ground, managed to successfully land the helicopter on the roof of the Metroplex General Hospital.
Overnight, Odessa Brody became a household name on par with the network's star anchor, Whitmore Wainwright. Due to her newfound fame, and the approval ratings with their audience that came with it, she started getting assigned better stories and given substantially more airtime. Her likability was further bolstered when the pilot did an on-air interview thanking her for saving his life.
When Whitmore's co-anchor announced their retirement, there was a widespread campaign on social media calling for Odessa to become the next co-anchor, led by people who liked her precisely because she didn't come from a prominent media family. Within a week, the network offered her the position.
She has been a news anchor at First Light News for the past year. It is a position that she is thriving in, and although Whitmore is still very much the star of the show, she has her own dedicated fanbase and has been credited with pulling in an audience that previous anchors couldn't. She is very proud of this.
Odessa does not date. She goes on dates, but she makes it very clear that she doesn't have time for a relationship, and isn't interested in anything beyond sex. She can be a little bit of a fuckboi about it, but it's not her fault if people catch feelings in spite of her repeated assurances that she will not reciprocate.
MISC
She regularly lunches with a group of young professionals who are all rising stars in their respective fields. They regularly support each other and use their respective connections to help bolster each other's careers.

Adelaide 500: Embattled Vailo still Supercars race major sponsor
Organisers of the Adelaide 500 have been forced to deny any problems over dealings with a millionaire entrepreneur after questions about the event’s sponsorship.
Organisers of Adelaide’s returned Supercars motor race have denied any problems over its dealings with a millionaire entrepreneur after questions about the event’s sponsorship. Vailo founder Aaron James Hickmann, 34, faces a possible company ban and risks losing control of his high profile brand over a failed medicinal cannabis venture, BBS Pharmaceuticals. Mr Hickmann, a father of two, has denied wrongdoing or that any of his businesses are at risk. Vailo, formerly known as Valo before a “rebrand”, sponsors several major sport teams and events, including the 500.

Opposition treasury spokesman, Matt Cowdrey, called for government assurances that “taxpayers won’t be left to clean up this mess with public money”.
“We need assurances from (Premier) Peter Malinauskas that Labor did standard due diligence on this deal before signing on the dotted line and that the process wasn’t rushed to suit their political timeline,” he said.
The premier had no comment. But a SA Motor Sport board spokesman said all sponsorship had been paid.
Despite questions about Mr Hickmann’s empire as director of at least 47 companies, he said his brand would be the 500’s naming rights sponsor this year. “Vailo was delighted to support the return of the Adelaide 500 to our city’s streets,” he said in a statement issued through an Adelaide public relations firm. “We’re proud to have made a contribution to its success and the enjoyment of many Motorsport (sic) fans.
VAILO BOSS’S ROCKY ROAD IN BUSINESS
2012 - Founded VALO at age 23, designing and building energy-efficient LED lighting products. 2015 - Pivots to high-performance stadium lighting. March 2022 - Hickmann’s Ikara Equities takes over as majority shareholder of medicinal cannabis start-up BBS Pharmaceuticals. April 2022 - VALO announces plans to bring manufacturing back to Adelaide with the launch of an $8mdevelopment hub in Kent Town. July 2022 - Emerged from relative obscurity with 23-minute speech at a Business SA lunch. October 2022 - Resigns as director of BBS. December 2022 - Hickmann’s Vircura business unveils plans to make SA the industrial hemp capital of Australia. December 2022 - Named in The Advertiser’s Power 50 list of SA’s most influential people. January 2023 - BBS falls into administration. May 2023 - VALO rebrands to VAILO, expands to US. May 2023 - Administrators recommend creditors wind up BBS.
“Vailo is looking forward to building on that success by supporting this year’s race as naming rights sponsor.” Security is guarding Mr Hickmann’s $5.6m mansion – located in an affluent part of Adelaide’s inner south – that is owned by a company he and his wife are directors of.
A statement from an interstate marketing firm, a 500 spokeswoman said it had no relationship with BBS. “The event has and continues to enjoy a strong relationship with Vailo and we look forward to working with them in preparation for 2023,” she said.

What Sociologists Offer Marine Research: Blue Justice
By Felix Morrow
While Memorial University sociologists do not need to be reminded of the social importance of marine environments, sociology as a discipline does. Recently, there has been a series of calls for a variety of oceanic-focused sociological research ranging from narrowly defined to broadly defined environmental topics. At the root of these calls is the observation that marine environments are full of social, and eco-social, relations ranging from interlinked environmental and social decline to labour conflicts, social movements, cultural activities, and governance by social institutions.
In light of these calls, at the 2024 annual meeting of the Canadian Sociological Association, I gave a presentation on the theoretical frameworks that sociologists can draw upon to engage in the proposed oceanic research agendas. In this article, I draw on the lessons I have learned doing and reading fisheries research to provide a more general argument of what sociology can potentially bring to the table by stepping beyond the terrestrial.
Harvesting Sea Cucumbers. Photograph by Jorge A. Lopez-Rocha.
Over the course of my academic career, I have been involved in research on illegal fishing, specifically of sea cucumbers, and the political economy of overfishing and fishery collapse. Growing up in Victoria, BC, I have always been a short walk away from the coast, grown accustom to killer whale sightings off the bow of BC ferries, and been active in the local environmental movement. I remember taking photos of great blue herons and Oyster catchers at the beach. And, at the same time, I recall provincial states of emergency where smoke from mainland forest fires crossed the Straight of Georgia and smothered Victoria. Across these experiences I have developed a strong connection to the environments and non-human life around me while witnessing moments where it all seems in peril.
Beyond this personal appreciation for the oceans, my Master’s Thesis will be focused on the social movements that engage international fisheries governance bodies. Through these projects I have been exposed to literature across social scientific disciplines that speak to marine social issues. From these experiences, I aim to highlight how sociologists are well positioned to substantively incorporate critical perspectives that center equity and justice – a conversation that Patricia Widener started in a 2018 article in the journal Environmental Sociology, “Coastal People Dispute Offshore Oil Exploration: Towards a Study of Embedded Seascapes, Submersible Knowledge, Sacrifice, and Marine Justice.” Specifically, I will be focusing on the emergent concept of “blue justice” and how it applies to militarized state responses to illegal fishing.
The concept of blue justice was coined in 2018 at the Third World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress, an event organized by the global research partnership, Too Big to Ignore, which is based at Memorial University and led by the geography professor Ratana Chuenpagdee. Blue justice entails a direct challenge to “blue economy” frameworks that emphasize the interests of industry, governments, and financial institutions in the sustainable development of maritime resources. Blue justice activists and scholars aim to recenter the people that live and work in marine environments as a central consideration in academic and policy conversations. For researchers, this entails explicitly asking equity and justice questions when researching marine topics.
A heron photographed by Felix Morrow
A blue justice lens extends to a wide range of sociological fields, including examinations of economic and political inequities, which cultures and knowledges are given primacy over others, and rejecting the all-too-common assumption that a rising tide lifts all boats in a system built on inequality. It is critical to recognize the inherent conflicts within the social organization of marine spaces and resources and actively consider how they can be documented by sociologists. In the realm of blue justice the expertise of sociologists in documenting and problematizing power relations makes our perspectives important when we incorporate human relations within, and with, marine environments.
I was exposed to the prevalent role state violence assumes in wildlife enforcement through my involvement in research on illegal sea cucumber fishing, specifically in Australia and India. In 1977, maritime borders were expanded to give states full sovereignty to regulate economic activities (e.g., fishing, extraction, etc.) over 12 nautical miles from the continental shelf, and exclusive rights for an additional 188 nautical miles. Notable for sociologists, Philip E. Steinburg highlights in his book The Social Construction of the Ocean how such changes to the legal and political structuring of ocean-space have been consistently (re)organized around the interests of dominant state actors.
Based on a case study of illicit sea cucumber fisheries in Indian waters, Muralidharan and Rai highlight the Indian government’s closure of livelihood-sustaining artisan sea cucumber fishing, thereby criminalizing fishers who continue to fish (Political Geography, vol. 80). While overfishing was an issue, the principle reason behind the decline of the sea cucumber fishery was trawlers fishing for shrimp. The militarization of Indian waters was premised on concerns relating to the movement of smugglers, combatants, and refugees resulting from the 1983 Sri Lankan civil war. Militarization gave rise to a “green war” or “war by conservation” in which the Indian Navy became central in preventing illegal movement in Indian waters and targeting illegal fishers. Critically, the term green wars describes a rhetorical shift in which the language of conservation is transformed into the language of securitization.
In Australia, fishers on “blue boats,” typically from surrounding countries and carrying impoverished people, are intercepted by the Australian Navy. Their catch is confiscated and a portion of their vessels burned with the fishers placed on the remaining vessels and removed from Australian waters. Following such interventions the Australian Navy promotes photos of burning boats to the media and frames their actions as a defense of Australia as a nation – thereby engaging in the rhetoric of securitization instead of conservation.
In these examples, a kind of double victimization occurs where people’s social conditions push them into economic activities that then put them at greater risk of state violence. More broadly, the concept of green wars is important for sociologists interested in environmental topics because it obliges us to grapple with social inequality as we continue through an era of ecological decline. In such cases, sociologists have the opportunity to think about the application of state violence in conservation efforts as a broad social phenomena that is interlinked with other social injustices. As Widener notes, this will require us to adopt a blue justice lens in sociological research relating to a broader range of marine topics than those discussed in this article.
Felix Morrow is a graduate student in the Memorial University Department of Sociology.

𝘿𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙚́𝙣, 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟭.
Once upon a time, in the bustling city of London, England, a young boy was born on a chilly winter morning. It was December 11th, 1991, when this extraordinary child came into the world. His name was Damién Eledreus, and he was blessed with a loving family and an abundance of wealth.
Growing up in the lap of luxury, Damién enjoyed a comfortable and privileged childhood. His parents, William and Victoria Kensington, were both successful entrepreneurs, running a thriving business empire. They provided their son with the best education, nurturing his curious mind and encouraging his pursuit of knowledge.
As Damién approached his twentieth birthday, his life took an unexpected turn. It was revealed that his mother, Victoria, was originally from Indonesia, and she longed to reconnect with her roots. After much contemplation and discussion, the Kensington family decided to embark on a new adventure and relocate to Indonesia.
Leaving behind the familiar sights and sounds of London, Damién bid farewell to his childhood friends and set foot in the vibrant and diverse nation of Indonesia. The transition was both exhilarating and challenging for him. He had to adapt to a different culture, learn a new language, and acclimate to the tropical climate that enveloped the archipelago.
Despite the initial challenges, Damién's love for storytelling and his natural curiosity remained unwavering. Inspired by the rich tapestry of Indonesian society, he found his calling in journalism. Intrigued by the power of media to shed light on important issues and give voice to the voiceless, Damién set his sights on becoming a journalist.
He enrolled in a prestigious communication school and honed his skills in writing, interviewing, and reporting. His dedication and passion for his craft quickly caught the attention of the prominent news organization, MetroTV. Recognizing his talent, they offered him an opportunity to join their team as a journalist.
Thrilled by the prospect of pursuing his dream, Damién embraced his new role wholeheartedly. He traveled across the archipelago, covering a wide range of stories that reflected the diverse nature of Indonesia. From rural villages to bustling cities, from environmental issues to political developments, Damién's words captured the essence of the nation he now called home.
As the years went by, Damién's journalistic prowess and dedication to his craft earned him recognition and respect within the industry. His stories resonated with people from all walks of life, and he became known for his insightful analysis and compassionate storytelling.
Although Damién had initially planned to stay in Indonesia for a limited period, his bond with the country grew stronger with each passing day. He fell in love with its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and the warmth and resilience of its people. He realized that he had found a true sense of belonging in this remarkable nation.
Now, years later, Damién continues his journey as a beloved journalist on MetroTV. His work continues to shed light on important issues, inspiring change and fostering understanding among the Indonesian people. His decision to embrace his mother's homeland and pursue his passion has not only shaped his life but also impacted the lives of countless others.
As Damién reflects on his remarkable journey, he is grateful for the serendipitous path that led him to Indonesia. It is a testament to the power of exploration, embracing new experiences, and following one's heart. And so, with unwavering determination, he continues to weave stories that capture the essence of the human spirit and contribute to the tapestry of Indonesia's vibrant narrative.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY & CULTURE, USA 🇺🇸! A standout addition to Washington, D.C.’s National Mall, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture opened in 2016. CENTRE GEORGES POMPIDOU, FRANCE 🇫🇷! An early example of “inside out” design, the contemporary art museum in Paris features exposed ductwork, exterior escalators, and a pop sensibility courtesy of Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano's 1971 plans. Its rooftop restaurant boasts some of the best views of the city.

On July 16th 1882 thirty-one Shetland "sixerns", with a total of 105 crewmen were lost in a storm. The event is still remembered as "The Bad Day".
This post covers three Shetland fishing tragedies over a 68 year period, it ended the centuries old tradition of Haff fishing in small six manned bots in the open waters of the North Atlantic around Shetland. Two of these tragedies happened in July, the third in December, however I have decided to post about the three in the one post.
On 16th July 1832 31 Shetland “sixareens” and a total of 105 crewmen were lost in a storm. The event is still remembered as “The Bad Day”.
They were some 32 kilometres (20 miles) away, between the Horse of Burravpoe and Snap, when they were caught in a sudden and severe gale from the north-west. Many were lost during the storm which came on in the space of five minutes.
The Delting Disaster Fund was set up to help those affected and it was one of Queen Victoria’s last public acts to appeal for support.
There are few sixareens left in Shetland. There are a couple of replicas and bits and pieces lying around here and there. At the Shetland Museum and Archives there’s a replica sixareen called the Vaila Mae. She sails regularly in Lerwick Harbour and you can even get a trip on her during Shetland Boat Week!
One of the only surviving sixareens from the past can be seen in the Shetland Museum, see pic teo, . She was built as the Foula mail boat, which fished for a little while and then ended up as a flit boat for shifting peats. She didn’t spend much of her life as a fishing sixareen.
You can find memorials all over Shetland to those lost at sea.

Amazing Historical Events That Occurred on March 27th
Juan Ponce de León, a Spanish explorer and conquistador, was the first European to journey to what later became known as the American state of Florida. Ponce de León sailed to this region as part of an expedition in 1513, when he spotted land from a distance and named it “Florida” after Easter "Pascua Florida," which means “feast of flowers” in Spanish. He continued exploring the coastline for about two weeks before turning back towards home. From there, Ponce de León's discoveries helped fuel further explorations by subsequent expeditions throughout the 16th century that eventually led to Spanish colonization.
Under the terms of the Royal Charter, the East India Company established a presence in Bombay and created a trading post that became one of the most important hubs of British trade with India. With control of Bombay, the company was able to expand its trading activities throughout India and beyond, eventually becoming a dominant power in India for more than two centuries. The East India Company's influence played a major role in shaping modern Indian history, including developing transportation systems such as railways and roads, introducing English education and law systems, and building many iconic structures like Victoria Terminus in Mumbai. By 1858, the East India Company had authority over almost all of present-day India. However, due to widespread discontent against their rule, their reign ended shortly thereafter when Queen Victoria declared direct control by the British Crown over all former company territories in 1858.
The Treaty of Madrid was a peace treaty between France and Spain signed in 1721 after the War of the Quadruple Alliance. This war had been fought since 1718, when England, Austria and Holland joined forces against their rival countries France and Spain in an effort to limit their power. The war finally ended with the signing of the Treaty of Madrid. The treaty required France to give up its claim to Spanish territories in Italy, as well as much of its naval forces, while Spain gave up its claims to southern parts of the Dutch Republic. It also contained other provisions such as disarmament, recognition of existing borders and demilitarization. The treaty was ratified by both countries soon afterwards, thus ending the War of the Quadruple Alliance once and for all.
Kerosene is a type of petroleum-based fuel commonly used in home heating and lanterns. It was first discovered in the mid-1800s by Canadian geologist Abraham Gesner. Initially, it was used for medical and industrial applications and then, in 1855, Gesner patented it and began selling it as a safe and affordable alternative to other lighting oils such as whale oil. The invention of kerosene revolutionized lighting technology at the time as it allowed people to burn a clean, bright light that could be used indoors without having to worry about toxic fumes or noxious odors. In addition, its low price point made it accessible to nearly everyone. This increased illumination safety which, in turn, led to an increase in educational opportunities for children of all socioeconomic backgrounds who were previously unable to study after dark due to lack of proper lighting. Today kerosene is still widely used in many parts of the world for both residential and commercial purposes.
The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed in 1868, two years after US President Andrew Johnson vetoed a civil rights bill that would have granted full citizenship to African Americans. The main purpose of the amendment was to guarantee the rights of citizens and provide equal protection under the law regardless of race or color. It also aimed to prevent state laws from violating or superseding federal laws. Specifically, it granted all people "born or naturalized in the United States" citizenship and prevented any state from taking away these rights without due process of law. In addition, it prohibited any person who had held a Confederate public office from seeking public office or holding public office again without approval by Congress, a provision known as the "Ironclad Oath". This amendment has been seen as a major victory for civil rights and has been cited as setting an important legal precedent that is still relevant today.
