Hawks sighed heavily, leaning back in his office desk chair, elbows propping on the armrests. He rubbed his tired eyes, tilting his head back, attempting to avoid eye contact with the stack of paperwork that lay out before him.

Every muscle in his body ached with exhaustion. It felt like he had been sitting in this same spot for days, poring over reports and documents in an endless cycle of busy work. As the number-two hero, the public demanded nothing but his very best. They expected him to always be alert and swift in responding to any crisis, dealing with volatile situations and dangerous villains with calm precision.

But they didn't see this part. They didn't witness the countless late nights spent filling out forms, compiling statistics, and attending meetings after meetings. No cameras captured the headaches induced by mind-numbing bureaucracy or the frustration of dealing with petty politics. This was the hidden cost of his elevated rank—an incessant paper-pushing grindstone that wore him down more than any actual fight ever could.

Slowly dragging his hands down his face, Hawks sighed again as the aches and knots of tension complained loudly in his neck and shoulders. For a brief moment, he considered using his feathers to shred just a few stray documents, to do less work.

He stretched his arms over his head and rolled his tense muscles, his wings fluttering restlessly behind him. All he wanted at that moment was to forget. To spread his wings and fly through open skies, feeling the wind ruffle through his feathers as he left his troubles far below.

Tilting his chair back as far as it would go, he gave a long-suffering look at the piles of work that towered precariously around him, silently pleading with it all to spontaneously catch fire or simply vanish into thin air. With a resigned sigh, Hawks dropped all four chair legs back to the floor and reluctantly pulled the topmost file towards him once more, bracing himself for another grind of the ever-turning wheel.

Hawks rubbed his tired eyes once more, feeling his motivation drain away with each mundane paragraph he read. At this rate, he'd be here all night and well into the morning. With a groan, he tossed the file back onto the pile, temporarily defeated. Maybe a quick break was what he needed to recharge his focus.

Pushing away from his desk, Hawks stood and stretched out his cramped body to its full height, his wings unfolding to their full span. A midnight flight around the city was just what he needed. The cool night air and darkened streets would do wonders for clearing his cluttered mind.

Stepping out onto his office balcony, Hawks took a few steps back, then launched himself into the sky with his wings. He flew high, circling up towards the crowning heights of the skyscrapers that shone below. Closing his eyes briefly, he took a deep breath of the fresher air, feeling tensions beginning to melt away already.

As he glided back down towards street level, Hawks scanned the sidewalks lazily while lost in thought. He was mulling over the options when movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention.

Your shadow slipped between alleyways, scanning for any civilians in the area. Suddenly flashes of red nearing a rooftop drew your eye—a familiar winged silhouette.

Going on a nearby rooftop, you spotted Hawks looking down, trying to find who or what he saw.

You and Hawks used to know each other pretty well in your teen years when you dreamed of being a great hero. So when you were selected by the Commission to become one, you were ecstatic. But from day one, Keigo Takami made things... complicated.

You two went way back to your training days, though you mostly kept your head down back then. Once in the pro scene though, Takami always found ways to rile you up during sessions, whether with sly taunts or risky stunts that pushed protocol to the limit.

Part of you wanted to throttle that arrogant asshole, but another part couldn't deny the thrill he made you feel.

Late nights spent training turned into more..private scenarios. For a time, it was nice to find solace in each other. But then came the ruling—you'd been deemed "not hero material" after one mistake, ruining your future. That's when Takami tried to connect with you again, but the hero commission wouldn't even allow him to be close to you to not damage the reputation he already made with the public.

"You're up rather late for a hero," you whispered directly into his ear, barely suppressing a chuckle at his startled flinch. Golden eyes met yours warily, yet he made no move to escape our intimate embrace.

"I'm off duty," was his measured reply. "And you?" Smoke clung thick to the memories in his eyes.

Your fingers, carefully gloved, traced the proud arch of his wings, feeling tension bleed away slowly. "Care for some company, Keigo?"

He held your gaze steadily, considering. At last he nodded, extending a hand. “Not that I can shake you off anyway,” he replied, a faint smirk playing on his lips.

You sat together on the secluded rooftop, settling close against one another. As you caught up, you both couldn't help but feel deprived of each other's touch; it had been far too long since you'd seen one another face to face. Sure, he'd heard about you through others in the commission, but being here together was different somehow.

When your voices at last fell silent, a gentle touch turned your chin to meet Hawks' searching eyes. "Y/N…" he murmured, leaning in so your faces were mere inches apart. One of his wings stretched out to block any view from the street below, enveloping you both in its feathery embrace.

Hawks closed the remaining distance between you, pressing his lips to yours in a soft yet insistent kiss.

One hand came up to cradle the back of your head, fingers threading into your hair, as the other wrapped around your waist to draw you flush against his body. You felt even better than he remembered.

When your lips parted under him, Hawks held back a groan as he rested his forehead against yours as you both panted for air. Wisps of steam rose between the two of you in the chill night.

If he tasted you fully, it would undo his last shred of willpower.

“You're going to be the end of me.." Hawks murmured thickly. Already, he ached to have more, but taking you here against the railing would be too brazen, even for his recklessness.

With a sly smile, Hawks swept you into his arms in a bridal carry, wings already prepared for launch. "Hold on tight.”

Hawks kicked off from the roof of the building and took flight, relishing your tight grip around his shoulders. The thrill of having you in his arms sent adrenaline surging through his veins.

He landed lightly on the balcony of his high-rise apartment, still holding you securely against his chest. Your masked face was turned up to meet his gaze.

Post-chapter 29 thoughts + spoilers below

A key thing to note is how different the relationship between Tav and Astarion is compared to the game. In bg3, early Act 3 is a fledgling relationship burdened by Astarion's obsessive, even frightening, drive for the ritual, and the player character can either indulge that or question him.

In FATWR, that's secondary: Astarion has tied his chances of success to keeping Tav happy so that she will help him, as he has no faith is his ability to do it by himself. He leaves it in her hands, and Tav notably gathers less information than he does in-game due to her preoccupation with Cazador. Freedom is a nebulous concept to Astarion, though he imagines the ascended version of himself might be an equal partner to her, or even free entirely (whatever that means.)

I don't consider Astarion to be particularly touchy-feely, so note how he lingers compulsively close to Tav for the past few chapters. He doesn't view them as a relationship, per se, though he does know she feels something for him and vice versa - instead, he continually refers to himself as her favorite, i.e. favorite spawn, a position that is up for grabs and competitive in nature. He's more snippy with the companions, who are competition. He postures before camp about their relationship because it's a more positive re-imagining of his position within the spawn ranking, a role Tav unconsciously pushed him into with all her deliberate and unintentional reflections of Cazador. Because Tav is touchy, he's doing what he thinks she wants - being affectionate, even overbearingly so - and indulging in a position he never wanted/would be allowed to achieve, and finding it strangely enjoyable, if anxiety inducing and intense. (He's roleplaying a dedicated boyfriend very, very hard rn.)

He pushes for the Love Test because Astarion does want to escape the role of favored spawn by becoming equals (though this of course goes completely over Tav's head.) Neither particularly wanted to talk about such personal things in front of a stranger, and end up spitefully pushing each other into honesty. And Zethino confirms that they do have an healthy path out of this, their love being akin to a fledgling tree growing in the undergrowth of a forest, choked out from sunlight by Sylvar & Cazador's impressions towering impressions. It's the Californian in me: they need a good forest fire, to clear out the brush and ancient, dead trees.

When confronted by Dalyria and Petras, he almost introduces her as his new master. In the first draft, I had him do so to Tav's immense satisfaction, but once I decided the glowing spawn eyes were a sign of Caz staring through them, I decided to cut it - let's not aggravate Caz too much just yet, though he definitely caught what Tav was trying to pitch, even if not explicitly said.

Tav's a bit of a misandrist, mistrustful of men and diminishing of them, so she ignores Petras and focuses on Dalyria instead. I wanted to mimic the feeling of watching a dysfunctional family: little slights blow into huge ones in an instant, and Astarion's feelings + Dalyria's instant hysteria are meant to evoke that. It's like watching a typically calm friend immediately blow their cool when confronted with a minor dig by a parent or sibling - they blow up because for them, it's the straw that broke the camels back, while for the observer it's nothing, and they therefor seem ridiculous and sensitive.

Astarion burns Petras for far longer because it's the first bit of control he's gotten so far in the whole story, he's stressed (she did say they'd talk about the love test, and Astarion expects more than just that), and Tav doesn't give enough of a shit to stop him. Had he killed Petras, she would have been like "well, guess you didn't want to ascend after all. Idiot."

Tav continues to display next to no sensitivity for Astarion's sexual trauma by making him kiss Dalyria. It's both a silly little thing to prove to Cazador that Astarion does what she says, that he's hers, because she finds Cazador's insistence on feeding them vermin to be disgusting and needlessly degrading, but also giving Dalyria real blood is a quick way to endear herself to her (of debatable value, considering Dalyria's getting flayed for it). She also just thinks it's hot. Tav really wants to watch him have sex with someone else. It's not about watching other people have sex - it's about Astarion being in the throes of pleasure, regardless of how/why/how many people are involved. As Tav would absolutely participate in an orgy if he asked it of her, she sees no problem with this.

A lot of Tav's reactions (or lack thereof) to Astarion's issues can be summed up as "I did the same thing and it was fine, absolutely fine, I definitely do not have trauma about this, and honestly, I wouldn't let anything truly terrible happen to you anyway and will stop the second you ask, so why is any of this a problem? It's fine. EVERYTHING'S FINE." sigh she's a handful

Anyway, because Astarion is the practical sort and not much of a planner, while he does realize that Tav's flexing towards Cazador, he doesn't understand why, and is quite frankly sick of trying to figure it out. The more he's compared the two, the less he wants to think about Cazador, full stop, because that goes too close to thinking about any latent attraction he might have to Cazador, how much he's been ruined and molded by him, and how Tav keeps telling him the same. The less time he spends thinking about Cazador the better (unless it's fantasizing about brutally murdering him), and genuinely, he's still mad impressed she talked so many people into killing themselves + the Gur fight. If whatever she's planning gets Caz killed faster, great. He trusts that she won't give him back, that she wants Caz dead, and that she promised to ascend him, a promise he strangely believes despite himself.

All he's got to do is keep his position as her favorite, keep her happy, pray she doesn't completely enthrall him before the ascension, and hope she doesn't come up with too much weird shit in the meantime because god knows his mind can be a terrible place at times, and he has no doubt hers is just a depraved. (They've both got such a skewed sense of normal sexuality & relationships that there's some truly wild shit coming up lol. This act isn't even about their relationship, really! It's about Tav & Astarion's quests! The smut just keeps smutting!!! 💀)

Anyway, Tav's upset because he compared her to Caz again (correctly), said she doesn't flex her power enough (except when she does, he compares her to Caz) and it's a comparison she's finally decided doesn't serve her, but Astarion's already done so much work accepting the idea that honestly she's never going to escape it. Womp womp hence, hoisted by her own petard.

Because he was so accurate with the love test answers (besides the one) and she was both vulnerable and sucked his dick last night/realized she loved him, she's both incredibly pleased and disengaging at the same time. Daydreaming, horny - but also degrading, bringing him down to her level by making him kiss Dalyria and being a whore like her, casting herself as Sylvar, and thinking about him in terms of an object to be won, a "beloved pet", which, ouch. I love him like a pet it's different he's my little vampling ok this is definitely not a real relationship

The "boiling to frog" bit is about Astarion. He's the frog being boiled. Tav's pushing his boundaries further and further to move the goalpost on how much he can take from her.

Hybrid Evaporative Cooler

A type of high-efficiency cooling device created and developed for the petrochemical sector by Longhua Technology Group (Luoyang) Company is the hybrid evaporative cooler. The high-efficiency cooler for the petrochemical industry has achieved an optimized combination of different cooling methods such as evaporative cooling, air cooling, and water cooling, thereby achieving a stable and reliable structure, extensive application scope, and obvious benefits such as energy saving, water saving, and environmental protection performance. This is based on the basic theories of latent heat exchange and sensible heat exchange.

Hybrid Evaporative Cooler Operating Principle

The hybrid evaporative cooler is similar to the three-stage series cooling system of "air cooler + water cooler + cooling water tower" combined into one set of intensive equipment, but compared with the traditional series cooling system, it has significant "three reuse processes and three differences":

1. "Three reuse processes" means that the wind and water are reused three times in the high-efficiency equipment. The first reuse of wind occurs from the lowest end of the evaporation tube to the liquid level of the water tank, in which the wind with the lowest temperature cools the circulating water falling continuously above to ensure that the water temperature in the water tank remains unchanged. The second reuse of wind occurs outside the water film of the evaporation tube, and the air with higher speed flows through the outside of the water film to form local negative pressure, which is beneficial to the evaporation of the water film and taking away the water vapor in time, thereby preventing the water vapor from forming pressure outside the water film. When the wind reaches the outside of the fin in the upward direction, the flow pattern changes from laminar flow to turbulent flow. In this state, the air heat transfer coefficient is high, the air temperature rises greatly (generally 10℃ - 15℃), and the high-temperature air is discharged from the induced-draft fan duct, thus completing the three-step cascade utilization of the air. The first cascade utilization of water also occurs at the bottom of the evaporation tube, in which water is in counter-current contact with the air inhaled from the outside for the first time. The water in torrential rain state has the function of washing, which can thoroughly flush the impurities in the air to the bottom of the water tank, ensure clean air passing through the tube bundle, and reduce scaling and blockage between the gaps of the tube bundle. The second reuse of water occurs outside the evaporation tube, and its main function is to evenly distribute the water film. It is necessary to ensure that each line of pipes and each row of pipes are evenly covered by the water film, without dry areas, and prevent scaling and corrosion under the scale. Most of the liquid water is intercepted by the water collector at the upper part of the spraying device. When saturated water vapor passes upward through the outside of the finned tube bundle, secondary interception occurs, in which saturated water vapor becomes unsaturated steam when passing through the superheated section of the fin and is discharged to the outside of the air duct, without the white mist phenomenon, and the air heat transfer coefficient outside the humidified fin is also be improved. In a series of cascade utilization, the water is reused three times, realizing "full use".

2. "Three differences" means that the equipment is quite different from the traditional air cooler, water cooler and cooling water tower. The difference between the fin section of the equipment and the fin section of the air cooler is the difference in anticorrosion. The traditional air cooler generally operates in dry air environment, so the outer side of its aluminum fins basically does not need anticorrosion, but the fin outer side of the hybrid evaporative cooler operates in humid air environment, so the fin tube bundle needs to be anticorrosive as a whole, and the overall hot dip galvanized zinc anticorrosion is generally adopted on the processed steel pipe and steel sheet. The evaporation tube section of the equipment is also very different from the tube bundle of the water cooler. The cold medium of the water cooler generally goes through inside the tube and hot medium goes through outside the tube, but the hybrid evaporative cooler is just the opposite: The hot medium goes through inside the tube, the wind and water go through outside the tube, so the outer side of the tube also needs hot dip galvanized zinc anticorrosion. Hybrid evaporative cooler is also very different from cooling water tower. Traditional cooling water tower generally has packing, but hybrid evaporative cooler has no packing in the countercurrent contact section of wind and water. Besides, cooling water tower is generally installed on the ground, while hybrid evaporative cooler is a kind of movable equipment, which can be conveniently installed on pipe gallery, platform or roof, conducive to utilizing used equipment.
