Five of the tomato plants I grew from costco cherry tomatoes were starting to grow out the bottoms of their pots. So today, I repotted them. Their individual pots are all in the purple bin, which I'm using as a water tray.

The one in the clear bin is grown from a cutting of one of last year's tomato plants. It's been growing inside all winter. It seems tolerant, though I'm not sure how happy it is considering how much it needs support. That's why I have it leaning on the grey cart. The leaves are also a little droopy, and a few on the end are crunchy, but the soil has enough moisture. I actually worry that it's too moist, so I haven't been watering it as frequently. It might need different soil.

When I started these seeds, I didn't expect all 12 of them to sprout. And I didn't expect all the seedlings to survive. But now that I think about it, in my experience, tomato plants are really good for beginner gardeners. Just make sure you do some research cuz the soil I put that tomato cutting in does not dry out very well, and I dont think the tomato likes it 😬 thats my bad

Jan 24th, I bought a philodendron from Sprouts that looked sickly, but I've cared for Pothos' before, so I figured it shouldn't be too much different. I named her Python, and this is what she looked like the day I bought her. (Sorry in advance for the blurry pics. My phone doesn't like to focus)

Her soil was so dry, so the first thing I did was let her drink from the bottom up. Just set her pot in a container of water until the top was moist. (I feel I should note that this is the same way I water my pothos, and the top of their soil does dry out eventually.)

But the moisture in Python's soil never really went away. In fact, I started noticing fuzzy mold growing on the surface of the soil.

That kinda freaked me out since it hasn't happened to my houseplants before. So I looked some stuff up, and apparently, cinnamon is supposed to be anti-fungal. This was my first time hearing about that, but more than one source suggested it. So, I scooped out the entire top layer of soil to remove the mold, then sprinkled some cinnamon (And I cut off some sicker looking leaves). But I didn't notice any improvement. The mold actually came back. (maybe I did it wrong, but this is just my experience)

I wanted to save this plant, though. That was the whole point of buying it. I was hesitant to completely repot her with completely new soil just because I was nervous about disturbing her roots or putting her in soil that turned out to be worse. But she was already distressed, so I decided to just go for it. The original soil was loamy, and I'm not sure that was the best choice. So I dug her up and found that her roots her caged in mesh.

I wouldn't call myself a plant expert, but I'm fairly certain the roots should never be caged like this. No wonder she was having such a rough time. I gently tore it off and put Python in a new, clean pot with soil that's more similar to what my Pothos are in. It drains better, and there's a little bit of bark in it. (These are 2 of my pothos, Rosa and Lina. At the time of repotting, they were smaller. That's why they're in the same pot. But it might be time for them to get their own pots. We'll see.)

But here's Python repotted and with room to breathe. I probably could've kept her in the red pot. Idk why I didn't. Her roots aren't that big. But hopefully, she feels better like this.
