my funny controversial veilguard opinion is that while i get why people are saying the 'sexy lof' armor is orientalist and i do think there's a convo to be had there... that armor is also based off of actual clothes people historically wore in southeast asia. like this
Tumblr media
is absolutely based off of these
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and while these are stylised forms of the outfit it's not because of the skin being shown. the women wearing shirts underneath are not wearing it as thai people wore tabengman historically. because historically we didn't really wear a lot of shirts, shirts were not legally mandated clothes until the 1940s. my thai grandmother is older than that. in fact a lot of asia didn't get around to stigmatizing and sexualizing breasts until the 1800s or later (like you can find photos of korean women in the 1900s with their breasts out and that was fine and normal culturally). the reason these are stylized though is bc they're made of silk and they're wearing brocades. most people would've worn this in plain fabric without gold brocades bc silk and gold are expensive.
and, to be clear, a lot of both the LoF and qunari armors and fashion is based off of historical southeast asian fashion. isabella is straight up wearing a hmong necklace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the qunari ropes are also almost certainly based off of muay boran kard chuek which is this old way of binding your hands with hemp ropes in thailand for boxing. you can also see that in qunari concept art they've drawn them with intricate knots that are very chinese in origin, they're wearing armor in rattans weaved patterns. (i'll also point out that it was explicitly said in the past that people from east tevinter, which is closer to seheron, look like dorian, and dorian's va is half indo-fijian and half malay. that man belongs to the south pacific.)
and yes, we could have a whole conversation about specifically choosing to look at these armors instead of other southeast asian armors. but i think a lot of people think the armor is based off of western fantasies of belly dancer costumes... which while may have played a part, it's also very clear to me that the devs have used a lot of southeast asian inspiration for seheron, rivain, and part of tevinter.

Tanita Tikaram - Twist in My Sobriety 1988
"Twist in My Sobriety" is a song written and performed by British singer-songwriter Tanita Tikaram, born in West Germany of Indo-Fijian and Sarawakian Malay origin. Released as a single in October 1988 when she was 19 years old from her debut album, Ancient Heart, it was Tikaram's biggest international success, achieving top 10 placings in several European countries. The song reached number two in both Austria and West Germany. It peaked at number 25 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Speaking about the somewhat obscure and enigmatic lyrics, Tikaram has offered different views on their meaning, but said it's mostly about the particular relationship with the world one feels when entering adulthood. "The song is really about not understanding – when you're 18, you've got a very particular emotional relationship with the world, you feel very isolated, and everybody else is so distant and cold. And I think I was singing about not feeling anything or not being moved by things around. I think this is a strong feeling when you're just after adolescence."
"Twist in My Sobriety" was nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards; Best Female Video and Best Cinematography. It was also nominated for Best British Single at the Brit Awards.
In 1989, the song was covered by Liza Minnelli. In 1996, a remixed house version by Ramp with a much faster tempo was included on the compilation The Best of Tanita Tikaram and was released as a single to promote the album. The single peaked at number 82 in the UK. In 2001, the song appeared on the soundtrack of the film Bandits, starring Bruce Willis and Cate Blanchett. In 2023 it was covered by the Norwegian symphonic metal band Sirenia.
"Twist in My Sobriety" received a total of 69,1% yes votes!

I had to separate the legend from the map because it would not have been legible otherwise. I am aware that the color distinctions are not always very clear, but there are only so many colors in the palette.

hello!!! I think Holi Festival it’s celebrated mainly in India and Nepal. Maybe in Fiji they make one, but i think it has Hindu origins… Sorry to bother you, i hope it can help you!
ps. I loved the last chapter, made me cry!
Okay I read that too because I know Fiji and India aren't exactly close, but I read there's actually quite a large Indian population in Fiji (called Indo-Fijians) so I believe they carried on the Hindu tradition on the islands. But this is from Google and Wikipedia so if anyone's ever been to Fiji or lives near there that can confirm this for me, I would be forever grateful!
Btw it's totally never a bother, thank you so much ❤️

Hello is this account BIPOC owned?
Hiiiiii! Yes it is! My writing is very generalized as best it can be, I want all my readers to feel like themselves when they read my fics! I want them to feel just as loved, valued and appreciated as everyone else! I think that’s super important, that even if one of my requesters or my followers wants a specific request that I try to match it. But I mostly just focus on generalized descriptions because I want it to be all inclusive! I also come from a really diverse background, as an Indo-Fijian Mexican!😌 which is such an interesting mix and I’ve only ever met like one or two people who share the same kinda background. And sadly you know there’s not a lot of fics or stories in general on screen or in novels that represent me or people like me and because of that I just really want everyone to feel included. Ummm I hope that answers your question and I do hope you find a fic you like or wish to request and I do hope you stay!🫶🏽

I'm hella vibing and feeling myself, yo.! 🍃 .
I feel so good about myself and I am happy about it. I can wear whatever I want, I can wear guy t-shirts and jeans as long as I'm comfortable. I can totally wear sneakers all the time and everywhere I go. I can take care of my shoes and clean them because people notice top to bottom. Clean is what is noticed, Clean house, car, hair. Everything looks good when it is clean and organized. ! You love clean, you love organized.
I'd just love for someone to make me aloo, bean, bora and garam soft rotis!. -Indo/Fijian style❤️.
Taking my medications, drinking water, eating food at home, socialize. I need to socialize and be out there more talking to people. The rejection felt is unsettling, even today. One method failed, but there are several other methods. It's okay to face or get rejected because that is how things go. Rejection happens, it can feel good to reject when you have been rejected for too long. However, knowing you'll be facing rejection or a possible chance of rejection, it does not mean to stop. It does not mean to stop trying for different socializing and application things. It happens, everywhere and to everyone. It is nothing personal towards you. One gets done, the next gets started. Also understand that you can be whoever you want to be. Wear, listen, look, read, take care of yourself, etc., however you want.

Post coup trauma – thirty-seven years on.
May 14th 1879, the Leonidas landed on Fiji’s shores with the first ‘batch’ of Indian indentured labourers, brought to toil on sugar plantations. After the Leonidas, 87 ships brought over 60, 000 indentured labourers to Fiji, whose children would become the first generation of an ethnic group known as Indo – Fijians.
May 14th 1987, Fiji: Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka was responsible for a racially fuelled coup in Fiji. After which many Indo Fijians including my parents emigrated to New Zealand.
In 2022, Sitiveni Rabuka was elected as the Prime Minister of Fiji. My mother felt uneasy about this. The trauma and undercurrents of 1987 has never gone away.
A lifetime has gone by since 1987, perhaps it is time to think about how past decisions now affect the diaspora?

To begin with, in 1879 the indians arrived from India through the indentured system. They arrived in the ship Leondas and it carried 60,965 laborers. Their contact ended in the 1920 and some indians that have taken the decision to stay here are now seen in today's indo-fijian. Although the indians and itaukei fijians have started off a bad foot but it gradually got better with time and now the two ethic group together with peace and harmony.
Additionally, the niueans and samoans were brought in the 18th century by Tongans to build war ships. The 18th century contained a ton of wars so the togans brought the niueans and samoans by baiting them using the priced vesi hardwood. The niueans and samoans families which migrated to Fiji were absorbed into the local cultures and had little to no memory of their original home.
Lastly, the missionaries have started arriving in Fiji from the 19th century, they glorified God and peace. They made peace between various ethic groups. They also built schools and introduced reading and writing which is now known as education.
