tagged by @wrose-writes (thanks for the tag!). i............haven't written anything in like a week, but here's a little excerpt from one of the birchlorn extras ^.^
Before long, Jing Ya's own eyes flutter open as she wakes. When her gaze focuses on Bai Hua's face, she says, muzzily, reaching out with clumsy fingers to stroke Bai Hua's cheek, "A Hua, what's wrong?" "Nothing," Bai Hua murmurs, and presses her face into Jing Ya's shoulder. "Just a dream." "Not a nightmare?" "No," Bai Hua says, quietly. "A lovely, lovely dream."

✨NEW WRITEBLR TAG GAME JUST DROPPED✨
If you're struggling with breathing life into your OC's, try this funny yet stupidly simple trick/writeblr tag game I just came up with. I call it the 'Roast Your OCS and Make It Into a Title' tag game. 🤣
So, we've all heard of fictional character archetypes and stereotypes that are often present in fiction, right? We all know it's not good to have shallow, surface level characters that have no complexity or nuance to their personalities, because real life humans contain multitudes, contradictions, and are in general very complicated beings.
Throw all that shit out for this exercise and toss it into the trash! 🗑️ In this tag game, we're gonna be reducing all our OC's to the most basic, mundane, stereotypical/archetypal renditions of themselves and making it Fit Into a Title!
Here's an example of my main character + his besties from my Science Fantasy WIP:
Cold and Stoic Pretty Boy Loaner With Social Anxiety and Unhealed Trauma Tries to Save His Sister
Disowned Goth Femme Fatale With Bitchy Yet Gentle Attitude Is Socially Neglected and Cries A Lot
Occasionally Serious Himbo City Boy Cop Tries and Fails to Fight Crime With Therapy and Rehabilitation
Snobby Know-It-All Imperial Man Who Somehow Has Both A Superiority and Inferiority Complex
Protective Amazonian Lesbian Sadist Who Will Absolutely Step On You and Ruin Your Life Forever
Gifted Slutty Bisexual Boy Genius Is Hiding a Dark Secret and Is Very Zesty (Rude) About It
For this tag game I'm gonna be tagging A LOT of people but mainly people who've interacted with me recently. Free to reblog if you see this on your dash, even if you're not tagged. I find this shit HILARIOUS and I would love to see what everyone manages to come up with! No pressure at all if you don't wanna participate, this is all just for fun. ❤️😊

If you want some extra help you can also look up character stereotypes/archetypes like I did. There's hundreds of blog posts about this topic but here's some helpful links so you can judge/roast your OC's to your heart's content:

Books of 2024 (in no particular order)
Hi, hello dears! Since I’m out here trying to bring back things, I’ll give a shot to this one too from last year. The “rules” were to list 9 books you’ve read and loved this year, and boy I’ve got recs to gush about. (somehow I could read 40+ books which is just insane)
No pressure tagging: @bloodlessheiratnight, @the-void-writes, @barbex, @indigowriting, @aalinaaaaaa, @approximately20blorbos, @wildswrites, @dyrewrites, @odysseywritings, @jadefyre, @goldfinchwrites, @sodaliteskull, @astarlightmonbebe, @tc-doherty, @forthesanityofstorytellers and anyone who’d like to join!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole. ya fantasy, Jamaican-inspired, dragon riders, M/F and F/F focus
God I wanted to yap about this one for so long. This book literally got me back to reading, so naturally it became an instant fav and a life-changing book. And, honestly, gave me hope for some YA since I’m not the audience for those usually. The setting is as breathtaking as fresh within the genre, and the story is a very exciting one with all the dragon riding, the academy and the gods that would loan their power. Not to mention the characters which I surprisingly grown to love very much. (And man the romance part made me kick my feet and squel in excitement at some point). So yeah, give it a try please all. Like, now.
Why We Swim by Bonnie Tsui. non-fic, great audiobook, title says all
The read that rekindled my love for swimming and being in the water. A very interesting little book about incredible lives that were saved by or moved by swimming and the waters, while it also shows light on some beneficial aspects that not everyone might know. It’s a half memoir/biography too, but that part wasn’t as impactful I’d say. However the rest did make a strong impression on me so I’d recommend this to everyone who wants to know whats the swimming and water crazed people’s deal.
Jade City by Fonda Lee epic&urban fantasy, east-asian martial art movies and the godfather vibes, grimdark
And here we come with the big guns. I didn’t know this story is gonna be the second all time fav fantasy series on my list, nor that Fonda’s gonna become the tradpub female writer idol for me, but life’s just that unpredictable. Seriously, this book has me by the throat and I don’t want the grip to soften. All that you can imagine from the bleak, smoke filled gangster life to the flying-jumping double kicks of Michelle Yeoh, it’s in it. The story also very heavily leans onto the political intrigue, and lore aspect so keep that in mind. Oh and the best ever erotica (for my taste personally) is sprinkled around there casually too, so there’s that.
Penance by Eliza Clark litfic, fake-true crime, thriller
I was never a true crime girlie, but I was a litfic one. This book is kind of a satire about how true crime impacts people, especially teenage girls, and what's up with the obsession over it. It also explores where reality and fiction blurrs, and how that can impact lives. A brutal read, in my opinion, and I ate it up in two days smh. Also, I'm going to be real honest with y'all here; I was very confused at the beginning because I never read a fake investigated interview/essay before, so I completely believed it to be true (even tho I found it in the fiction genre). So yes, Eliza Clark is brilliant in that sense, will definitely check out her other books, and will never forget the true tragedy she based the crime in the book. Oh and when she brought up tumblr and tumblrinas in the book... ugh.
Cultish by Amanda Montell. non-fic, great audiobook, title says it all
2024 was the year of litfic and non-fic on my end, or at least I tried and am still trying to get back to them. This one was a very interesting book about cults and how cult leaders use language as a tool to create their communities. Or, well, not just them but everyone. I love learning about how and why we use language as we do, and I also love learning about anything cult related even tho they make my skin crawl. This book luckily did justice on both ends.
Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. litfic, fake-rockumentary, fleetwood mac/stevie nicks-inspired
Continuing my march on the "reading the books my favourite series and movies are based upon" journey. Daisy Jones is something that was great in book, but excellent on tv. The whole fiasco and the documentary part works better on screen I think, especially after they literally wrote, produced, sang and perfomed songs. Like what the hell. Still listening to the songs cuz some of them are peak 70s. However, the book and the series has the same vibe, so that's why I could enjoy both. (not to mention it inspired me too) What I would really highlight tho, it’s Simon’s story in the series because my god I love her so much. Sometimes even wish it would have been about her than Daisy, lol.
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. (ya) historical fantasy, very heavy war stuff, chinese mythology
It's not ya, okay? There are elements that match that, but overall, it's just not. What the book (and the whole series) actually is tho, is a raw portrayal and an essay about the horrors of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and what went down there, coated with a touch fantastical world and some magical/mythical elements. Loved the first book to pieces. This one might be the closest to ya, with all the academy time, the hint of enemies to whatevers, but only up until the half of the book. After that it blurrs and morphs. Still, the whole series is the most educational fantasy I've ever read, and will always keep the first book as a favourite. It's something everyone should read at least once, I think. But never ask me about the last installment.
The Red Palace by June Hur. ya historical fantasy, mystery, romance
Imagine a book that literally reads like a korean period drama. I mean, literally. Funny enough, I needed a second try to get to this book, but after that, oh man it checked all the boxes. It's easy to read, a fun little murder mystery in the palace, and a great experience if you're a kdrama junkie like me. I still think about this book from time to time, and will read all the other works from the author for sure. (fun fact: the royal family stuff are usually historically accurate because that's June Hur's whole sthick, which i love that for her)
We Will Devour The Night by Camilla Andrew. gaslamp fantasy, court intrigue, light vs dark, some impeccable erotica
We all know and love Cammie. And trust to bring an amazing next installement to the The Essence of the Equinox. I loved the book to pieces, because it contained everything I'd crave in a continuation. An interesting and gorgeous expanded world, escalating political intrigue and a ton of great character interactions. While, of course we still got to spend time with our best girl Laila, and best dick Darius.

[bullet point tag game!]
thank you @elkieselkiewrites for the tag
heres a bullet point summary of my wip, Here Atlas Fell, except im only covering the things i've written so far because this post would be waaayyy too long otherwise (my book is massive)
TW: allusions to self harm
you find yourself joining a cult in the wilderness after "the love of your life" (who is actually an abusive piece of shit) cheated on you and decided to keep this random guy's baby
immediately these strange people make you do a sacrificial ritual with an old lake and some stones
you get back to the cabin and this guy youve never seen before walks in and he looks like the sun
maybe you arent straight
i mean what?
you follow the golden boy to the cafeteria where the two of you steal snacks for a bonfire
around the fire he tells you that the moon goddess must be pleased with you because its a full moon tonight
everyone goes to sleep
but at some point you wake up
and theres a ghost standing outside your window
the two of you watch eachother for a long time
when she disappears you get back in bed
this is when the panic hits you
how did you get here? why did octavia do that to you? will you ever get back to her? whats going on? who was that?
you stumble into the bathroom and engage in a..... coping mechanism.... of yours.... only to pass out on the floor
the boy from earlier finds you in the middle of the night and cleans you up
he helps you get back into bed, though you dont really remember this, and doesnt fall asleep until he knows youre safe
in the morning, the other two roommates (aka the strange people you did the ritual with) pull him outside to "have a chat"
you realize that they think he did what you did last night
because apparently he has a history with it too
he finds you after the conversation and tells you not to worry about it. you two dont even have to talk about it, really. he'll take the blame
but before you can respond with any sort of thanks, someone bursts in the cabin door and tells you all that one of the girls have gone missing
a search party breaks out and you cant help but wonder....
who was that ghost last night?
and then the POV switches! how fun
im going to taagg...... @angelfevr, @indigowriting, @nymphoutofwater, and whoever else would like to join!
(also! if you want to be tagged in these in the future pls let me know. im trying to make a list of people i know are interested in tag games so i don't have to guess each time haha)

Last Line Tag
📝 Share the last line you added to a WIP (or a last chapter line, or the last line you edited, or the last whatever works for you)
Thank you to @rookitowrites for tagging me!
I'm afraid it's not a very exciting line, so I added the last 3 to give it some context:
~*~
There were clocks so small that several could fit on a table at once, each one crafted out of fine metal filigree so one could see the equally as fine mechanisms tick and turn within them. There were some in burnished bronze, some in blackened iron, and others in brilliant verdigris patina, but all were beautifully formed, their glass faces and precise hands all somehow moving as one, as if they were attuned to the same cosmic timepiece. Ida hadn't even known clocks could be made so small nor so accurate.
~*~
I'll tag @writingamongther0ses, @ace-malarky, @indigowriting and @bloodmoodtrash but there's no pressure to take part! Also open tag if you'd like to take part too!

Writing Share Tag
Thanks to @gioiaalbanoart for the tag!
So this derives from a straight continuation of A Lesson In Observation, after what happened to Charimone by the end.
Bang, bang, bang. “Hmpf.” Charimone turned under the bed sheets, head facing towards the inner wall. The door boomed again, and so she tugged the sheets closer. She closed her eyes, waiting for the banging to cease and fade away. A muffled noise accompanied each round of knocking, a consistent set of three. Her mind yearned for sleep, called out for it, drifting until the sounds breached it, falling short of the heavenly limbo between the domains of dreams and wakefulness. “Leave me alone.” She rose her head from the pillow, eyes drawn to the small slivers of light outlining part of the door. For a moment, everything ceased. The voice spoke again. “Charimone. Charimone, come out.” She froze. Only one person in this place knew of her name. If she opened the door — if she could open it, even — what waited beyond it? A wall of books split her from the outside. Sturdy in place but precarious, vulnerable to divine wrath as she was. She walked to the door, standing before it, hovering her wavering hand. Whatever would happen would happen. The voice called again. She opened it in answer. It creaked and swivelled away from her, leaving her to raise her hands at the sudden burst of light.
Charimone hesitated in the doorway, her captor’s face taking up the entire right side of her vision. “Did you enjoy the party last night?” “I don’t know…” The tone made her wish she never opened the door, the lady’s polar blue eyes and blood red hair a chilling reminder of herself. “How did you know to find me?” The lady blinked a few times, scoffing. “Your technique is good, child, but it needs work. Anyone with a good sense of magic could’ve found you.” “Are you mad at me?” She brought her hands close to her chest, nerves rising in the short silence. The lady extended a hand to her, and she took a step back from the forefinger close to her chin. “I made a promise to you that I would never tell your father you followed him here. But you need to make that promise to yourself. Otherwise you may need to be asking him that question.”

Tumblr media
it's been a while—a bit more than six months!—since i first made an intro post for this blog, and since then, i've gained a lot of followers, and my focuses have shifted slightly, so i wanted to make a langblr reintro post to reflect that.
you can call me jiayi (家宜). 2024-2025 is my fourth year in post-secondary education overall, and my second year working on my bachelor's degree.
originally, i was an intended combination STEM-humanities major, but due to a variety of reasons, i am now exclusively focusing on humanities. my majors are chinese, middle eastern languages and cultures, and linguistics. i'm also passionate about translation and sexuality studies and asian languages in general, especially turkic and sinitic languages.
i am west asian and speak english, chinese, and turkish as my mother tongues, and i am more or less functionally conversational in german, at around a B1 level. my current language focuses for independent study are korean and bengali, but i'm also interested in mongolian, vietnamese, shanghainese, and kurmanci.
for my study tools, you can find an ask i answered here that extensively details what programmes, apps, and sites i use to study (slightly out of date currently, but not wildly so). besides that, you can find my collection of resource posts generally under the tag #resources, my chinese-specific posts under #汉语, and answered asks under #inbox.
you can also find me on my writeblr at @indigowriting!
i'm always open to asks and dms! i want to use this account as a resource for other people with interest in learning languages, and i'd love to make friends :)

First three paragraphs of your wip tag game
I want to be tagged, so I shall simply start my own tag game. (No pressure to participate if tagged!! And everyone is free to join, I'd love for active users to follow!!)
On the still, quiet dawn of a new day, long before their grandparents or the rest of the world had woken up, Juliana promised herself—but most importantly her twin brother, who'd insisted upon it—that things would get better. Even if they had to do all the hard work themselves, even if it seemed impossible. Rather than argue over futility and hopelessness, she sat with him on the cushioned window-seat, and watched the sunrise. But the universe had other plans. It always did.

tagged by @sunmerry-writes to post the first three paragraphs of my wip! you can find his post here: x
the only currently active wip i have is BIRCHLORN, so have the very start of the first chapter (only two paragraphs because i don’t want to spoil a major plot point):
To say that she didn't expect to wake up would have been an understatement, because she had, to the best of her knowledge, just moments before, been about to be absolutely mangled by an unfortunate rogue lawnmower—one of those industrial types, that require you to sit in a chair that looks a little uncomfortably like a throne, yellow-painted and growling as it cuts up grass. Well, unfortunately, it'll also cut you up, and her last memory is of screaming agony as her leg had been pulverised under its blades.
Now, opening her eyes, she wonders for a moment if, maybe, it had been a lawnmower hit and run, or something of that sort—there's blood all over, and a good portion of it is on her; she can feel the places where it's drying and tugging at her skin as it tightens.
tagging……..oh, let’s see, @elkieselkiewrites @alllthebadpartss @theroseempress and open tag! (no pressure though ^.^)

The first three paragraphs of my current wip, We Won't Ever Leave. Thank you so much @indigowriting for tagging me, and I'm so sorry it took me literally forever to do this!
But what of the girl?
This story started and ended with a murder.
Matthew noticed it first—how Lieutenant Hawkins moved with a predatory grace, his eyes scanning the group of soldiers as if he were hunting for something—or someone. Theo was among them, nervously laughing at some crude joke, but his laughter died quickly when Hawkins’s gaze landed on him.
Without a word, Hawkins walked over to Theo and placed a firm hand on his shoulder, his knuckles pale in the flickering firelight. Matthew, watching from the edge of the village, stiffened. No one else seemed to notice. No one ever noticed anything when it came to Hawkins.
Tagging @scribe-cas @northernrosewritings @rehnwriter and @owlbearwrites, no pressure though!

tag: heads up seven up LXXI
I was tagged by @writingamongther0ses! Thank you!
Have another bit from Open Seas, aka the only WIP where the words are wording:
As The Allegiance passed through the harbour mouth, Idalah exchanged words with a man working the nets in a language Tess didn’t recognize, gesturing towards the berths ahead. The conversation ended with Idalah shaking her head and waving the man off, earning a laugh from him. She joined them by the helm. “Berth twenty-seven, Raleigh. The bastards raised their fees again.” “They know this is the only safe place to resupply in this part of the ocean,” Dorian said. “Which means they’re getting enough of our money without gouging us on the berthing fees,” she replied sourly.
One thing is universal, and that is overpriced parking.
I tag @leah-yasmin-writes, @indigowriting, @drabbleitout, and anyone else who wants to play! As always, no pressure!

[WIP whatever day tag]
thanks for the tag @indigowriting! (you can find their excerpt here)
RULES: share some recent lines from your excerpt on... whatever day
Water lapped at the boy’s ankles, seeping through the canvas of his shoes and biting at his skin. It was crystal, both in color and in sharpness. He looked down at his feet, half expecting there to be blood muddling the water, seeping out from little cuts, but there was none. Only pink skin and wet socks, pink skin and wet socks. He turned back to the shore.  His counterparts hadn’t moved from the sand, though they still flanked him on either side, bodies braced for something unspoken. He was to enter the lake only as far as the tide could both touch him and recede. Then, he was to sacrifice the stones. That was all he knew.
okay... this writing isnt super recent, but i like these paragraphs and i havent done much lately due to finals n such. hope you enjoy anyway!
tagging: @nymphoutofwater, @foyle-writes-things, @rhikasa, and anyone else that would like to join!
