Ready to Stand: A comic retelling The Little Mermaid with a twist 🏳️‍⚧️

Panel 1: Ariel, a mermaid, holds a dress up in front of her and looks into a mirror longingly. Ariel’s flat chest covered in scales and gills makes her gender ambiguous. Ariel is in her underwater cave surrounded by trinkets from the human world. Ariel’s voice over: “Maybe Father’s right. Maybe there is something wrong with me.”

Panel 2: Ariel leans on a rock on the surface of the water, looking hopefully at 2 human women walking along the beach in the distance. Ariel’s voice over: “But I want this more than anything.”

Panel 3: Ariel is seen swimming away from her home in a shadowy nook, looking back at her father and sisters, who are laughing together. She is sad to leave them. Ariel’s voice over speaking to Ursula: “So you can really turn me into a human?”

Panel 4: Ariel approaches Ursula the Sea Witch in Ursula’s lair pleadingly. Ursula speaks to Ariel over her shoulder. Ursula answers: “I can. You’re not the first, honey. Life down here is so drab, isn’t it?” Ariel replies: “Yes. I don’t belong here. Please help me.”

Panel 5: Ariel and Ursula’s conversation continues as we see a flashback of Ariel’s father Triton, who has angrily destroyed Ariel’s trinkets from the human world with his magic. Triton holds Ariel by the arm in one hand and holds her dress, which is now in shambles, in his other hand. Ursula’s voice over: “What do you have to offer me?” Ariel’s voice over: “I have… well, I had a trove of treasures until my father…” Ariel trails off. Ursula’s voice over: “How about your voice?”

Panel 6: Ariel looks over her shoulder back at Ursula. Ursula appears more devilish now and lurks in the shadows behind her. Ariel asks: “My voice?” Ursula replies: “You can’t get something for nothing, kid. Your voice for your legs. Do we have a deal?”

Panel 7: Ariel and Ursula now are at opposite sides of a bubbling purple cauldron, full of a potion that will make Ariel human. Ursula holds a vial of this potion out to Ariel. Ariel’s fists are clenched and her face is poised in resolve. Ariel simply says, “okay.” Ursula warns Ariel: “But the transformation will be painful, and you can never return home. Are you sure this is what you want?”

Panel 8: The comic cuts to after Ariel’s transformation. She breaks the surface of the ocean and takes a sharp breath of air. She no longer has gills or scales, and she now has noticeable human breasts with seashell coverings. Ariel’s inner monologue voice over: “Air in my lungs…”

Panel 9: Ariel is seen in 2 poses. The first pose shows Ariel sitting in the shallow water on the beach, admiring one of her feet on her brand new legs. She has a huge smile on her face. The second pose shows Ariel trying to stand, now wearing a skirt made from a piece of canvas from nearby ship debris. Ariel teeters and falls over with a chibi-like expression that exaggerates her panic. Ariel’s inner monologue voice over continues: “Sand between my toes, the warm sun on my soft skin…”

Panel 10: Ariel blissfully but silently laughs while laying in the warm sand on the beach. Her arms and new legs are sprawled out in relaxation. Ariel’s inner monologue concludes: “Now I’m home.” / End image description]

So at the risk of outing myself as I have not at all been sneaky online with my pen name and real name (but I’d be a fool not to share this here with all of you)…

I wrote a book!

It comes out today (28th November)!

It’s a pirate mermaid romantasy novel (that will be part of a series) and I’m so proud of it. It is very much if Pirates of the Caribbean had a love child with the Little Mermaid and stole a little dna from the Vampire Diaries too. If that sounds like something that is right up your street you can buy it on Amazon. It is available to buy as an ebook or if you have Kindle Unlimited you can start reading right now at no extra cost. Paperbacks are also going to be available (I just messed up and am still waiting for the manuscript to process through but will be able to be bought in the next couple days).

I came up with this idea back in January. It initially started out as a pirate!Peter Parker idea but quickly snowballed into a full book and series pretty fast. It is very much a twisted Little Mermaid retelling with a vampire curse and I am just so proud of it. After sacrificing her fins for the man she loved, Ariadne has been cursed to roam the seas for five hundred years, doing the bidding of the Sea Devil she made the deal with all those years ago. Captain Elias Hale has been waging a war across the seas his entire adult life; determined to get his revenge on the beast that stole his family from him when he was just a boy- the fearsome Kraken no other pirate actually believes exists.

An unlikely encounter between the two may just in fact hold the key to them both getting what they want. But she knows more than she’s letting on. And he doesn’t even know her real name. Will both of them finally find satisfaction? Or will her secrets only act to doom them all?

Aquaria, i love you Aquaria

This game was a staple of my childhood and i have never heard Anyone outside my immediate family talk about it.

I used to play a sandbox mod version of it every single day cause I was too scared of dying in games to play the main version, although it's really not too difficult. When I got a bit older I picked it up again and it became one of the first games I ever played!

it's 10 dollars on steam and i would really recommend picking it up, it's great and I want more people to know about it ^^

A swell of scarlet surfaces with the crest of the foaming wave, as a breathless voice offers its most eager apologies. "Sorry I was late! I swam as fast as my fins could carry me to get here-" rummaging through a soaking, sagging satchel, which was weighed down by the sudden force of gravity, the bright mermaid retrieved an aged pipe and brought it forward. "Happy anniversary!" she giggled, before exerting all of her upper body force through the opening in the pipe's stem, causing a bubbling concoction of debris, limp seaweed, and leaking saltwater in a celebratory cheer. "Hmmm...this might need some tuning-" she turns the pipe to the side, examining the previously-clogged-up stummel with a quirked head. "I bet Sebastian would know how! Oh, I'd do backflips if he'd help! Maybe I could bring it up to him during one of Daddy's catfish-naps."

Flounder interjected, splashing about at her side, cautiously countering that Sebastian might identify the snarfblatt as being a human object. "Oh, don't worry about that, Flounder! We can always say we found it in Adella's makeup bag!" The youngest of Triton's children couldn't help but giggle at the last look she had of the fifth daughter, who was busy trying out a "fashionable" new hair braid she'd seen in a Madamshell Magazine. "This'll fit right in with the headdress she wore to Sebastian's opera last night. I thought I'd burst my bubble when he forgot she wasn't in costume." Ariel, for one, loved her sister's wacky style. However, part of her chest did tighten at the realization that, this same object- which would be condemned if she brought it to light, would be easily accepted if it belonged to her sister, instead. But those thoughts would have to be pushed back for another time.

"Thanks again for waiting on Flounder and I to get here! We should start hunting for new treasures to remember today by! Why don't we dive over near Sunken Reef Isle and-" Flounder shuddered his best friend's name, begging for her attention by flipping his pectoral fins. Isn't that where the skeletons of wayward sailors were said to be? "Aww, Flounder, that's just a silly fish-tale they tell to scare little guppies away. To prove there's nothing to be afraid of, I'll lead the head start!" And, before Flounder could deter her, all that was left of Ariel was a dash of foam and sea spray in the way of her plunging form.

Mermaid enthusiasts all need to pay attention to this

An open-world mermaid RPG is in development!

It's called Siren (not to be confused with the TV show), and it's in production by an independent, unpaid team of developers called Loreseeker Games. That video showcases their work so far. If you're as thirsty for mermaid media (mermedia) as I am, this is something to keep an eye on, and if you're so inclined, supporting financially on their Patreon. I really would love to get my hands on this some day, and authentic, un-corporatized art needs to be supported at all times. Signal boost!

BOOK REVIEW: THE SEA WITCH BY BETHANY HOEFLICH

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a fun take on Ursula’s origin story, only here she’s Ula. I think it’s interesting to speculate, and the story here reinforces that she was always seen with a bit of disdain in her world, only exiled after a significant event. I particularly love the idea of how the trident made its way into the hands of the royal family instead of where it belonged. While that spurred her, it was only after banishment that she came into her true power, which I think is a great bit of poetic justice.
