MCB or miniature circuit breaker is an electromagnetic mechanism. A miniature circuit breaker is a self-executing switch off circuit during an abnormal condition of the network like any faulty condition as well as an overload condition. In today we use an MCB in low voltage electrical network system instead of any fuse. In much more ways, the miniature circuit breaker is more reliable then fuse because the fuse may not sense it thus in over current miniature circuit breaker is more sensitive than any fuse. The working principle of miniature circuit breaker:
In general working condition, MCB is operating as a one manual switch to make the circuit on or off. It automatically operates or trips under overload or short circuit condition so, that current interruption takes place in the load circuit.
The visual indication of any trip can be observed by the automatic movement of the knob to the off position. Using two ways this automatic operation MCB can be obtained as we have seen in MCB construction; those are thermal tripping magnetic tripping
In an overload condition, the current through the bimetal cause to raise the temperature of it. The heat produces within the bimetal itself enough to cause deflection due to thermal expansion of metals. This deflection further releases the trip latch and then contacts get separated. In many MCBs magnetic field produced by the develop pull on bimetal like that deflection the tripping mechanism.
In heavy overload conditions or any short circuit conditions, the magnetic tripping arrangement comes into the picture. In usual working condition, the slug is held in a position by light spring because the magnetic field produced by the coil is not sufficient to attract the latch. When a fault current flows, the field produced by the coil is sufficient to overcome the spring holding slug in position, and then slug proceed so the actuate the tripping mechanism.
A combination of any thermal and magnetic tripping mechanism is used in most of MCBs. In both thermal and magnetic tripping operations, an arc is formed when the contacts start individual. The arc is then forced into arc break plates via arc runner. These arc break plates are also called arc chutes where the arc is formed into a series of arcs and at that time energy extracted and cools it. Then this arrangement achieves the arc extinction.
 Types of miniature circuit breaker:
1.       Type B MCB
2.       Type C MCB
3.       Type D MCB
4.       Type K MCB
Miniature circuit-breaker MCBs are classified into above three types according to their instantaneous tripping currents.
1.       Type B MCB:
Type B miniature circuit breaker will trip immediately at a rate of three to five times its rated current. These are generally used for resistive or small inductive loads where switching surges are very small. Therefore, these are suitable for residential light commercial installations.
2.       Type C MCB:
This type of MCB will trip immediately at a rate of five to ten times its rated current. These are generally used for high inductive loads where switching surges are high like small motor and fluorescent lighting. In such case, type C miniature circuit breakers are preferred to handle the value of short circuit currents. Therefore, these are suitable for highly inductive industrial and commercial installations.
3.       Type D MCB:
Type D miniature circuit breaker will trip immediately at a rate of ten to twenty-five times its rated current. These are generally used to the very high inductive loads where high inrush currents are very frequent. These are suitable for specific commercial and industrial applications. The general example of this application includes x-ray machines, UPS systems, large winding motor, and industrial welding equipment etc…
The above three types of miniature circuit breaker provide the protection. The minimum and maximum trip current of these MCBs are in below,
Type B MCB: minimum trip current 3lr and maximum trip current 4lr
Type C MCB: minimum trip current 5lr and maximum trip current 10lr
Type D MCB: minimum trip current 10lr and maximum trip current 20lr
Miniature circuit breaker is also classified according to their numbers of poles such as single pole MCB, double pole MCB, triple pole MCB and four pole MCB.
4.       Type K MCB:
This type miniature circuit breaker is designed to trip at between 8 and 12 times normal full load current, placing them between the traditional.
