The Racist Legacy of Gandhi: What History Overlooks

Mahatma Gandhi is often hailed as a hero of peace and non-violence, but his early writings during his time in South Africa reveal a troubling legacy of racism against Black Africans. While fighting for Indian rights, Gandhi perpetuated harmful stereotypes, used racial slurs, and advocated for segregation.

For instance, in 1904, he opposed the “mixing of Kaffirs with Indians” and called for racial separation. During a plague outbreak, he protested Africans and Indians being treated together in hospitals, reflecting his belief in a racial hierarchy that placed Indians above Africans. Gandhi’s use of the slur “Kaffir” and statements about Africans as “savages” further underscore the prejudice in his early views.

Though some argue his views evolved over time, these actions remain a stain on his legacy. In light of the growing anti-Indian racism seen today, sparked by tensions over issues like H1-B visas and TikTok videos exposing prejudices, it’s crucial to confront historical racism wherever it lies. Gandhi’s story serves as a reminder that no one is beyond scrutiny and that fighting prejudice requires addressing biases within all communities.

Back in the day, we had an F1 car along with other Formula cars in the grid in Madras (Chennai). The big engines attracted thousand of fans to this little airstrip in Sholavaram. . You will see the police constable in his uniform shorts and those old fashioned caps. Over the years, the event attracted thousands of people to visit this little World War II airstrip outside Chennai.
