During his period, the TN govt gave special awards to the champions. . Back in the day, we had an F1 car along with other Formula cars in the grid in Madras (Chennai). The big engines attracted thousand of fans to this little airstrip in Sholavaram. . This is in the ‘80s!!! The straight alone was little over 1km. And their speeds were little over 200kmph. . Now, we have taken a step backward in terms of fan participation. . You will see the police constable in his uniform shorts and those old fashioned caps. Over the years, the event attracted thousands of people to visit this little World War II airstrip outside Chennai. Dolphin Sipani - The '80s compact race car! . Back in the '80s, Sipani Automobiles launched Dolphin. The two-door version was a popular choice for everyone who raced in Sholavaram or rallies across India. The engine was an 848cc all-alloy block that produced 38hp. However, the entire car weighed just over 500kgs because it had a fibre-glass body. So, it was faster than the Heralds and the Fiat Padmini. The only rival on track was the Maruti Suzuki 800. .
