For visitors there are uncomfortable activities to choose from including kitesurfing, scuba diving and sailing. Its happening town also has a plenty of trendy bars, restaurants and staying options.
8. Cape Tribulation, Daintree National Park
It is situated on Australia’s northeastern coastline, Cape Tribulation’s wild and isolated location means that its serene beach is often deserted and can enjoy private time. Since it is situated within the Daintree National Park, there are plethora of treks you can experience into the rainforest. While hiking through the splendid scenery you will get a chance to have a glimpse of some of the abundant wildlife. If you are a risk taker you can also go mountain biking or horseback riding.
9. Cable Beach
Stretching for over twenty kilometers, Cable Beach is a delight . Its dazzlingly white sands look perfectly contrasted against the clear blue water. It is regularly voted amongst the best beaches in Australia. Despite its amazing appearance, Cable Beach have relatively few visitors due to its location.
While swimming in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean could be the best part of your trip. With its peaceful, laidback vibe, Cable Beach is a must visit. Another prime things to do here can be taking a camel ride along the never ending sands while watching the sun go down.
10. Whitehaven Beach
It is situated on the largest island in the Whitsundays Island chain, the views from the surrounding hills are breathtaking. The purest sand in the world is found here and discovering its engaging landscape formed by little coves and lagoons is a treat to spend the day. Also, to the eye catching scenery, there is snorkeling to be had at the various coral reefs that border its white sands.

When the words ‘Perth’ and ‘hiking’ are uttered in the same sentence there are good odds the conversation is about the Perth Hills, where the flat Swan Coastal Plain ends and the Darling Scarp emerges.
The bushland and undulating hills make for some great bushwalking (there’s one track that’s 1000km long!) among wildflowers, waterfalls, and the odd abandoned quarry.
But it’s not all grass trees and red-tailed black cockatoo flocks, don’t forget Perth also has some great coastline walks along the Indian Ocean, and the mighty Swan River.
Don’t have a car? Neither do I. So the five areas listed below are all accessible by public transport. Okay, I might be pushing it with Ellis Brook Valley, but I have to include it anyway.
So, grab your SmartRider card and let’s get hiking!
1. Kalamunda National Park
Distance from Perth: 28km
Walking 1000km along the Bibbulmun Track from Kalamunda, in the Perth Hills, to Albany is not everyone’s cup of tea. But, with the Kalamunda bus station at the doorstep of the Bibbulmun Track’s northern terminus, almost anyone can experience at least a small section of this famous trail.
Rocky Pools in flow in Kalamunda National Park
Apart from adding a feather to your hiking cap, there is also plenty to see, especially wildflowers, bushland panoramas, and birdlife. A popular spot is the scenic Rocky Pools, which was a popular swimming hole pre-1930s. Not sure how the kids back then coped with the freezing water. I’ll just enjoy the sound of running water and hopping amongst the rocks, thanks.
The Kalamunda local government provides a number of marked trails which traverse the area and are well worth exploring. The best time to visit is in the cooler months, especially after winter rains have filled the streams, and in late winter and spring when the wildflowers are erupting.
2. Mundy Regional Park and Lesmurdie Falls National Park
Distance from Perth: 24km
Located to the west of Kalamunda and Lesmurdie, the parks are accessible from all sides via public transport. Once again the Kalamunda local government has provided some fantastic marked trails.
My favourite would have to be the Whistlepipe Gully Walk – a 3km trail which loops around the banks of a winding creek with numerous small waterfalls. When the vegetation is lush from winter rains you could swear you are traipsing through a tropical jungle.
Attempting to not get wet at the foot of Lesmurdie Falls
Whistlepipe Gully is a great one for the kids, but if you are looking for a hike a bit more strenuous try a couple of the longer walks which loop around the hillier sections of the park. The reward for your effort will be panoramic views across the Swan Coastal Plain and an abundance of wildflowers and birdlife.
The jewel in the crown, however, would have to be Lesmurdie Falls, probably the most spectacular waterfall in the Perth metropolitan area. For a close-up view, take the Foot of the Falls Trail along Lesmurdie Brook but be careful hopping along those slippery rocks.
For a more panoramic view, take the high road along the southern shoulder of the valley and enjoy aerial views from the observation platforms.
3. Ellis Brook Valley
Distance from Perth: 25km
Okay, so Ellis Brook Valley isn’t that easy to access via public transport (about a 40 min walk from the closest bus stop), but it is doable without a car. And the effort is worth it. The area has probably the best display of wildflowers I have ever seen in the Perth metropolitan area.
There are a number of different trails to explore for different fitness levels. For those that like to take an easier walk try the Echidna, Eagle View Trail, or the Blue Wren Ramble Trail. These three trails have mind-blowing amounts of wildflowers if you come at the right time of year.
If you are more adventurous try the Sixty Foot Falls Trail which climbs to the top of the waterfall, providing brilliant views over the valley and to the city beyond. The trail also passes by the well-known Old Barrington Quarry, which for a hole in the ground is very photogenic.
A walk amongst the wildflowers on the Eagle View Trail
Ellis Brook Valley is a personal favourite of mine. I felt like a kid walking around here for the first time. Not sure what it was about this place.
Wildflowers I have never seen before? Pushing my way through tunnels of chickweed to find a babbling brook surrounded by colour? Hunting down my first ever sighting of a splendid blue fairywren? Or crawling through a hole in a fence to tip-toe my way to the edge of an abandoned quarry? Whatever it was, I had a blast and will forever be memorable.
4. Perth’s Indian Ocean Coastal Walks
Distance from Perth: 49km
That’s enough of the Perth Hills, time to give hikes along Perth’s stunning coastline some credit. There are plenty of walks all the way from Burns Beach in the north, to Mandurah in the south, but my favourite would have to be what I term the Unofficial Rockingham Coastal Hike.
Atop a sand dune enjoying the calm blue waters of Warnbro Sound
Stretching from the Rockingham City foreshore on Cockburn Sound, around Point Peron, along with the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park coastline, and then finishing in Port Kennedy after enjoying the expansive ocean views of Warnbro Sound, the Rockingham Coastal Hike is a big task at 25km.
Luckily the majority of the trail is a flat concrete path but you do get some adventure along the rocky shores of Point Peron. As the majority of the trail is easily accessed by public transport the hike can be broken up into much smaller sections.
So what can you experience on the walk? Plenty. Indian Ocean views, long sandy beaches, jagged limestone cliffs and outcrops, dolphins, bird life, rolling sand dunes, flocks of colourful kiteboarders, exploring WWII bunkers and gun emplacements, nude beaches (if you are so inclined), maritime history, and best of all absolutely stunning sunsets. A great summertime hike, so bring your swimmers.
5. Walking the Banks of the Swan River
Distance from Perth: 2.5km (to Narrows Bridge)
I’m not sure the exact length of the Swan River’s perimeter, but whatever it is it’s huge. This means plenty of walking opportunities. But where to start? Why not the Three Bridges Loop which joins the Narrows Bridge, the Canning Bridge and the Queen Victoria Street Bridge.
At a touch over 40km, you may want to break the walk into sections and spread the joy. Along the way there are obviously three bridges but also dolphin sightings, spectacular river views, Point Walter Spit (a sandbar that extends over 1km into the river at low tide), parklands, cafes to sample, black swans, sunsets from Como jetty and a glimpse into the lives of Perth’s wealthy (including one of Australia’s most expensive houses at $57.9 million).
Perth city lights reflecting on the Swan River
Want something a little closer to the Perth CBD? Try the loop from the newly developed Elizabeth Quay, over the Narrows Bridge, along the South Perth Foreshore, across Heirisson Island (don’t forget to say hello to the urban mob of Western Grey kangaroos) and then back along Riverside Drive. A great walk to take on a warm summer night while watching the city lights sparkle.
Heading interstate or maybe you live further east? Here are the best hikes near Adelaide, Brisbane, and Melbourne.
What’s your favourite bushwalk near Perth? Comment below.

Cultural Visits
Malaysian Heritage Centre:
The visit to the center on the 08/06/19 showcased a variety of traditional clothing items. This included Pendings (ceremonial buckles) which were traditionally worn by sultans and queens. It is typically worn with a belt to hold the kain samping, a long piece of fabric worn as a skirt (similar to a sarong). This buckle is gold and decorated with jewels (Esa, Aziz &Mahammod, 2018). This component of traditional dress is no longer worn in Malaysian attire, therefore, I have not seen this in Australia or Singapore.
The logo of the Heritage Center was shaped like a pot to hold gambler or other ingredients used to prepare betel liquid. Betel chewing is a common habit within southeast Asian culture, one I have personally not seen in Australia or Singapore. However, after further research, I found that it is used for pharmacological effects of euphoria, heightened alertness and increased concentration as well as habitual use (Chen, Mahmood, Mariottini, Chiang & Lee, 2017).
China Town:
Our visit to China town and the nearby Buddhist temple there were many people burning incense before their prayers and this is used as a purification ritual as well as a way of allowing communication between themselves and gods (Habkirk & Chang, 2017). Many people would donate a small amount of money to the temple in return for an incense stick. This is a ritual commonly seen in Australia and not exclusively in Buddhism. It is important to encourage these practices as it is a major component of healthy aging and meaningful engagement. Some of the symbols seen in the temple include the dragon. It is heavily featured in many architectural components of the buildings. it symbolises power, strength and good luck (Liang & Mason, 2013). Dragons are not a typical component of Australian Architecture however in areas of Chinese or Chinese/Buddhist background (i.e. Chinatown, Melbourne) you would come across similar features on buildings.
Indian Heritage Center:
The Indian Heritage Center had some interesting traditional jewelry including the Thali Necklace. It is a part of the Hindu wedding custom, it is a necklace at which the pendant feature has the ability to connect and disconnect. At the wedding, the male places the detached necklace around the female’s neck and then connects it. The belief is that the longer the necklace stays in good condition and is stronger it is a reflection of the marriage. This is still a common tradition used amongst Australian Hindu's and I have seen the necklace previously, worn by friends' parents.
Also, the door, considered to be one of the major attractions of the center there is an om/aum symbol. This is said to be the vibration and consciousness of the entire universe. However, this is an ambiguous symbol that holds many meanings to different individuals.
The Peranakan Museum:
The Museum Contained a variety of historic artifacts including traditional clothing. As shown in the image the Baju Panjang also known as a long coat. The one depicted is made of Indian textiles and crafted in the 18th or 19th-century. This garment was made from cotton and traditionally used as ceremonial decorations. These garments were so prized that they carefully preserved. This is not clothing I have seen worn or used.
The Peranakan Museum:
The museum featured a vase from northern Vietnam which has the image of a fish. This image of the fish is unique as it represents the Makara a mythical aquatic beast in southeast Asia which is half fish and half elephant. Interestingly this is believed to be the inspiration behind the development of the iconic merlion (Hayward, 2012). The Makara is a unique symbol that I have seen in Australia, typically whilst at friends’ houses’ that are of south east Asian heritage.

Final Assignment
Since I was a young boy I have always wanted to travel to new and different lands. There is something so fascinating about everyday people “doing life” like you and me, but in a much different way. It is like discovering life on another planet. There are different creatures, languages, technology, traditions and ways of living. Throughout these thoughts and dreams there has always been one place that stood out the most to me. A place that I knew I must study, visit, and hopefully sojourn to. Australia, from all appearances is it’s own planet. It seemingly floats between several different seas and the Indian Ocean mostly by itself. It has several other islands around like Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and New Zealand but boarders with no one. Whether it’s the incredible natural sights, funny accents, exotic animals, or the unique culture this place is a must see. Thankfully this course has afforded me an opportunity to look at Australia through a different lens. I have learned there are several things to know and consider before taking a journey to the “land down under”.
In so many ways Australia is culturally very close to the United States. If you are traveling from another English speaking country you will more than likely feel very comfortable. Over 75% of the continent is English speaking with Mandarin being the 2ndmost used language. In some places you may run into Arabic, Vietnamese, Cantonese, and Italian but these languages combined only amount to just under 8% of the population. Like the US, most Australians have similar expectations when it comes to communication. They are an affective communicating culture that is reliant on gestures, tonality and body language. Their “personal bubble” also mirrors the US with standing at least one arm’s length when speaking. They do believe in shaking hands and looking each other in the eye when speaking. This makes meeting people easier knowing we greet each other the same and both are low context cultures. Australia is home to a small population of Aboriginal Australians who do not follow the same set of cultural norms.
Australia is a safe and stable continent with a working democracy and stable political environment. It is a country that allows freedom of religion, which allows them to be home to many different spiritual beliefs. That being said the country is over 50% Christian and around 20% with no religion. Another similarity to the US the country has created a class system we are familiar with a working class, middle class, and upper class. In these class systems their views on gender roles and how each are treated is viewed as equal. Australian culture is big on attempting to have men and women treated equally and afforded equal opportunities. This is a topic that our own country has worked hard on improving as well.
One of the things people love most about traveling to other countries is the food. Thankfully Australians eat similar food and times as the US. Just like any other place Australia has its well know treats that most visitors look forward to eating like Tim Tams, Anzac biscuits, toast with vegemite, and fairy bread but the country is filled with so much more. Australia has a unique blend of dishes and multicultural adaptations from its many different inhabitants. If you are looking for seafood then a plate of Barramundis is what you are looking for. This fish is a type of sea bass that is found in and around the continent and is a very popular dish in Australia. If it is dessert you crave then order yourself Pavlova. A dish that locals say was created in Australia, Pavlova is a meringue cake base topped with fresh fruit and whipped cream.
This wonderful country did not happen over night. Though it has similarities to the US in some of its growth, it has several events that make Australia unique and different from other countries. In 1606 the first European both landed and mapped Australia. The gold rush in the mid 1800’s helped bring many new migrants to Australia. This helped form the foundations to many of the major cities their today. In 1901, the Constitution of Australia along with their very first flag was created. Just like the US, one year later in 1902 Women’s Suffrage took place. Later, in 1975 Medibank was introduced which later was renamed Medicare. This system of healthcare is given to all of the countries citizens and is considered one of the best systems in the world. In 2010 Australia had its very first female Prime Minister in Julia Gillard.
The people of Australia learn about events like these through their 2 national newspapers The Australian and The Australian Financial Review. They also have many state and regional newspaper that are in circulation. In terms of radio, they are controlled by many of the US companies that run our radio system like ABC. There are also several hundred publicly funded radio stations. In the world of entertainment Australia does have a successful film and music industry. Although most countries have a hard time competing with the US, Australia has seen great success in this arena. Some Australian films that have been both successful in both AUS and the US include: Crocodile Dundee, Happy Feet, Peter Rabbit, Babe, and The Great Gatsby. Since our cultures are so similar it is easy for Australians to create content that is easily consumable for Americans. Several of these are children’s films, which typically are successful here in the US. The other two are character pieces following the life of two unique individuals.
When visiting this beautiful country there is so many unique natural places to visit. It is also equally important to visit places and cities that make Australia what it is. One of those places being the capital of Australia, which is Canberra. Some might wonder why Melbourne or Sydney was not selected as the capital. Although these two cities are some of the largest it was decided that a good compromise would be Canberra. When visiting Australia it seems silly to not visit the country’s “crown jewel” Sydney. Sydney is home to so many iconic building and images that most people think of when thinking about Australia. Known, as the cultural capital of Australian Melbourne is my next must see city. For beautiful sights with a laid back feel Cairns is the place. Surrounded by rainforest, The Great Barrier Reef, and Crystal Blue waters this place is one to behold
I have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about this wonderful place. It has done nothing but solidified my desire to go there. I’ve learned of the beautiful sights and rich history. I have even explored some of my fears with traveling and some threats I may encounter. Despite all of that, none of them are worth me not experiencing Australia. I hope what I have found will help you in the same way it has helped me.
