Walk with me: Visit to a high-elevation red spruce forest. The red spruce (Picea rubens) forest on top of Red Spruce Knob, the ninth highest peak in West Virginia, provides a bittersweet glimpse back in time to the primeval beauty and solitude of such places prior to the arrival of the logging companies in the mid-Nineteenth to early Twentieth centuries. The loggers stripped the mountains bare and set in motion the massive wildfires that burned away everything, including the soil itself, down to solid bedrock. Almost a century later, the forest is regenerating and in some places, such as Red Spruce Knob, has regained the richness and vitality of a healthy boreal ecosystem.
From top: a view of Red Spruce Knob, in the far distance, from the Highland Scenic Highway overlook; Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), a ubiquitous understory component of the forest, along with mountain woodsorrel, yellow clintonia (a.k.a. blue-bead lily), hobblebush viburnum, Indian cucumber, green false hellebore, and various mosses and ferns; yellow clintonia (Clintonia borealis) in bloom; pink lady's slipper (Cypripedium acaule); green false hellebore (Veratrum viride) on eastern hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula); and mountain woodsorrel (Oxalis montana).

Transform Your Space Flower Bed Design and Installation Services in Oklahoma
Oklahoma's diverse landscape, ranging from rolling prairies to lush forests, offers a canvas of natural beauty. One way to enhance this natural splendor is through thoughtful flower bed design and installation. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a novice enthusiast, creating a vibrant flower bed can transform your outdoor space into a haven of colors and fragrances.
Understanding the Oklahoma Climate
Before delving into flower bed design, it's crucial to comprehend the unique climate of Oklahoma. With its hot summers and occasional droughts, selecting plants that can withstand these conditions is paramount. Native species like Black-Eyed Susans, Indian Blanketflowers, and Butterfly Milkweed not only add a touch of local flair but are also well-suited to the state's climate.
Designing for All Seasons
A well-thought-out flower bed should be a year-round spectacle. Incorporating a mix of perennials and annuals ensures that your garden blooms every season. Flower bed design and installation in Oklahoma include winter-blooming plants like pansies and hellebores to keep your flower bed lively even during the colder months. This thoughtful planning guarantees a burst of color regardless of the season.
Choosing the Right Soil and Location
The success of any flower bed design lies in the soil and its location. Oklahoma's soil composition can vary, so testing and amending the soil accordingly is vital. Most flowers thrive in well-draining soil, making raised beds an excellent option. Additionally, take note of the sunlight patterns in your garden. Picking the right location ensures your plants receive the optimal amount of sunlight, promoting healthy growth.
Native Plants for a Low-Maintenance Oasis
Flower bed design and installation in Oklahoma's native plants are not only resilient but also low-maintenance, making them perfect for busy homeowners. Coneflowers, Oklahoma Gayfeather, and Coreopsis not only require minimal care but also attract local pollinators, contributing to the overall health of your garden ecosystem.
Artistic Arrangement and Color Harmony
Creating a visually appealing flower bed involves more than just choosing beautiful flowers. Pay attention to color schemes, heights, and textures to achieve a harmonious design. For example, pairing the vibrant reds of Blanketflowers with the softer blues of Salvia can create a striking contrast. Experiment with different arrangements until you find a combination that pleases the eye.
Professional Flower Bed Installation Services in Oklahoma
For those who prefer a hands-off approach, enlisting the services of professional flower bed designers and installers can be a game-changer. Icons of the National Road, Part 2. A bloody confrontation at this idyllic notch on the spine of Chestnut Ridge in May, 1754 set off the French and Indian War in North America, which contributed subsequently to the global conflagration between Great Britain and France known as the Seven Years’ War. A French expedition led by Joseph Coulon de Villiers, Sieur de Jumonville left Fort Duquesne (at present-day Pittsburgh) to warn a British colonial militia building fortifications to the east of Chestnut Ridge not encroach on French Territory to the West. The colonial militia was led by George Washington. Tipped off by their Native American allies, Washington’s men ambushed the French party in the secluded, boulder-strewn depression that would later become known as Jumonville Glen. Jumonville was killed along with about a dozen of his men, some of whom were reportedly scalped. The French would later protest that their party was on a diplomatic mission. Washington insisted they were spies. About a month later, a much large force of regular French soldiers, Canadians, and Native Americans defeated the colonial militia at the Battle of Great Meadows and secured Fort Necessity.
The site of the Battle of Jumonville Glen is now preserved as part of the Fort Necessity National Battlefield.
Notes:
1. The site includes a seep where green false hellebore (Veratrum viride) grows in abundance. I really adore this deeply-pleated and highly toxic beauty.
2. The place is kind of creepy in the late afternoon. I’m not one given to supernatural inclinations, but I was tempted more than once to imagine the spirits of Jumonville and his men flitting through the glen’s secretive recesses. Probably just birds . . .

Herbs and Their Witchy Names
original graphic by: LorelainW
One of the things you might notice when working with spells is they call for some different ingredients. For example, eye of newt, wool of bat, toe of frog. To some who happen across these spells it can help lend to some of the fear surrounding witches because some of the ingredients may seem a bit bizarre. However, you will often find that seldom will those ingredients be literal. For example, if you see eye of newt in a spell, you are not going go out and get an actual eye from a newt. It actually refers to mustard seed.
The reason we have these names, stems from ancient times when it was not safe to keep spells about. So to protect the craft these names would be used instead. Some of them are just Old English, and some even date back to ancient China. A lot of times, you will find that the name is based on what the herb resembles. You will also find that many witches still use these names to this day. The more you work with magick and spell work the more familiar with these names you will become. I wanted to provide you with a basic list that you can use to work with as you are becoming familiar with working with them. As you find more you can add more to it.
