BLOG POST
Tumblr media
On the 11th August the Mellaris team were both proud guests and sponsors of the 2019 Miss Essex pageant. Hosted at The Cliffs Pavilion, regional director Emily Evans, and former Miss Essex in 2016, and her team organised a seamless night of celebrations for their 14 hopeful finalists. This years finalists dedicated their time in the run up to the competition by raising funds for the White Ribbon UK charity in memory of local Essex girl, Grace Millane. This touching sentiment and tribute set the tone for the night, and not only created a sense of community within the room but was also a kind reminder that pageantry isn’t solely all about glamour. Gathering together with purpose and passion, the 14 finalists bravely showcased their talents and personalities over a series of catwalks and Q&A’s. For some of the girls it was their first beauty pageant yet their endearing nerves only boosted the encouraging atmosphere as everyone continuously cheered and uplifted each other throughout the evening. Yet it was Georgie Goodey’s natural and charming presence on stage that awarded her the crowning title that evening! Georgie is a Billericay soldier as well as a weight lifter in her personal time, totally serving us Miss Congeniality vibes, which we absolutely loved. From her personality, career accomplishments and confidence it showcased that pageantry is not skin deep but in fact awards girls who’s beauty shines inside and out. It was also our own personal pleasure to dress the female judges on the panel this year, including Miss Essex 2018, Kirsty Bolt and Debra Tiffin. The pageant community continue to be great supporters of the Mellaris brand and so to celebrate our blooming friendship we interviewed a few of our favourite pageant winners to get the scoop on what it’s like to receive such a prestigious title.

How have you dealt with the pressures of ‘looking a certain way’, especially in an age driven by social media? I think that pageantry/Miss Essex is very accepting and encourages you to see beauty in everyone. You glow differently when you’re happy! So I think it all starts within you. When you’re in a community of women that are that so supportive and loving, it’s hard to get caught up in the negatives of social media.
What opportunities has being Miss Essex opened up for you? More than I can ever put into words! Attending events across the country, appearing on Comedy Central’s Your Face or Mine Celebrity Special, appearing on Channel 4’s First Dates, competing at a national level, all of the incredible women I’ve met all over the UK. Constant phone calls and scouting from TV Shows! It is crazy how many doors open for you as Miss Essex, and even the opportunity to direct the current Miss Essex competition all stems from winning the crown.
Is there any stand-out strong female icons that have inspired you along your journey? My mum is for sure the strongest female icon I know! She has truly mastered the art of being a strong and focused career woman, as well as a mother, while still maintaining femininity and grace. It’s definitely a juggling act, but she makes it all look so easy!
What are some of your responsibilities as regional director of Miss Essex? There are many responsibilities that come with running the Miss Essex competition. It requires a lot of organizational skills and hard work. Sourcing judges, hair and makeup, working with photographers, organizing press days, press releases, back and forth to the venue to ensure the show runs smoothly! Maintaining relationships with sponsors throughout the competition is easy when they are as amazing as Mellaris!
As the regional director of Miss Essex, how would you respond to people who may view pageants as ‘Out dated’ or glorify a certain image? Different things empower different women and it’s not anybody’s responsibility, except for her, to tell her what that should be. We have army officers, architectural students, aspirational doctors, mothers, fitness fanatics and entrepreneurs in our competition this year. All of our finalists have been working hard raising funds for White Ribbon UK in memory of Essex Girl Grace Millane. A group of women supporting other women, raising funds for women. Now that’s girl power!

How have you dealt with the pressures of ‘looking a certain way’, especially in an age driven by social media? The various forms of media, including social, really push us to look/be a certain way. Ironically, I thought I had to fit into a certain ‘mould’ to be Miss England, a standard model Size 8, a certain height, ‘look’ etc., however I couldn’t have been more wrong. The wonderful part about Miss England is that even if you look at the previous winners at ‘face value’, no two even look the same. I am one of, if not the ‘largest’ Miss England as a fluctuating UK 12/14, and to this date I have had the highest placing representing England in the Miss World competition, so it proves the misconception of being a Size 8 and a model as being completely false. Miss England helped me accept my size, where the media and social platforms would certainly have me believing otherwise.
What opportunities has being Miss England opened up for you? My biggest desire has been to travel and complete humanitarian aid throughout the world, but I never wanted to endorse ‘voluntourism’, where you pay a tour company to work with a charity internationally. I was able to work on an incredible project around Asia focusing on Feminine Hygiene Awareness when touring with Miss World, which is very close to home, with my professional background being in cancer research. I am pleased to say we made a huge impact during our time over there, particularly in India, so to have had such success on such a difficult project was astounding. In addition to this, I was able to further develop my side career as a classical crossover vocalist, and even meet incredible academics in the medial field and make fantastic professional networks.
With the knowledge of yourself now, what would you tell yourself when you were entering the competition? A famous quote from one of my favourite Broadway vocalists, Sierra Boggess: ‘You are enough, you have always been enough. It is unbelievable how enough you are.’
What does this next year entail for you?  Ultimately I will further my career in Cancer Research! I will be completing my master’s degree in Translational Oncology at the University of Sheffield Medical School alongside my position in Cancer Clinical Trials, then I’m hoping to pursue one of the following: a PhD in an Oncology-based project at Cancer Research UK in Manchester, begin the NHS Clinical Scientist Training Programme, or potentially continue my studies as a Physician’s Associate with a hope of specialising in Oncology. It’s wonderful to have so many options, but I can’t decide which one to do first!
Is there any stand-out strong female icons that have inspired you along your journey? SO many, and it changes by the week! I am constantly looking for inspiration, but my main inspiration is drawn from my master’s course leader, Carolyn Staton, who has made incredible contributions to cancer research initiatives, it truly is an honour to learn from her teachings. I am also hugely inspired by Audrey Hepburn, not for her influence in fashion, but her relentless dedication to humanitarian efforts despite her success on the silver screen.

Looking back, is there anything you would change, add or takeaway from the competition? I honestly wouldn’t change my experience for the world. Things happen the way they do for a reason and I’ve become a much stronger and wiser person from the experience.
What advice would you pass onto the future alumni of Miss England?  Go and be yourself, make friends and memories and just enjoy every second. Don’t go into the competition with any expectations and use the time as an experience.
For people who may view pageants as ‘Out dated’ or glorify a certain image over everything else. How would you respond to this? I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I respect that. However, I think I prove you don’t have to be a stereotype. I was the first ever Miss Newcastle or ‘Geordie’ to win Miss England and the most northern girl to ever win. I also believe my charity work over the past few years was what bagged me Miss England as is proved I was a good role model for the younger generations to look up to. With the knowledge of yourself now, what would you tell yourself when you were entering the competition? You’re stronger than you think. People will challenge you and your patience. Never doubt your abilities. What does this next year entail for you? I will be going back to university to finish my degree in Crime Scene Investigation and forensic science. I’ll also be continuing my modeling work, part-time.
We cherish all of our growing friendships with the many inspiring women within the beauty pageant industry and continue to champion all of their future successes. With our A/W19 collection almost ready for release we look forward to seeing how they adapt our garments to all of their amazing individual styles.

Althea Gibson
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Althea Gibson (August 25, 1927 – September 28, 2003) was an American tennis player and professional golfer, and the first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. In 1956, she became the first person of color to win a Grand Slam title (the French Open). The following year she won both Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals (precursor of the U.S. Open), then won both again in 1958, and was voted Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in both years. In all, she won 11 Grand Slam tournaments, including six doubles titles, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame. "She is one of the greatest players who ever lived," said Robert Ryland, a tennis contemporary and former coach of Venus and Serena Williams. "Martina couldn't touch her. I think she'd beat the Williams sisters." In the early 1960s she also became the first black player to compete on the women's professional golf tour.
At a time when racism and prejudice were widespread in sports and in society, Gibson was often compared to Jackie Robinson. "Her road to success was a challenging one," said Billie Jean King, "but I never saw her back down." "To anyone, she was an inspiration, because of what she was able to do at a time when it was enormously difficult to play tennis at all if you were black," said former New York City Mayor David Dinkins. "I am honored to have followed in such great footsteps," wrote Venus Williams. "Her accomplishments set the stage for my success, and through players like myself and Serena and many others to come, her legacy will live on."
Biography
Early life and education
Gibson was born on August 25, 1927, in the town of Silver, in Clarendon County, South Carolina, to Daniel and Annie Bell Gibson, who worked as sharecroppers on a cotton farm. The Great Depression hit rural southern farmers sooner than much of the rest of the country, so in 1930 the family moved to Harlem, where Althea's three sisters and brother were born. Their apartment was located on a stretch of 143rd Street that had been designated a Police Athletic League play area; during daylight hours it was barricaded so that neighborhood children could play organized sports. Gibson quickly became proficient in paddle tennis, and by 1939, at the age of 12, she was the New York City women's paddle tennis champion.
In 1940 a group of Gibson's neighbors took up a collection to finance a junior membership and lessons at the Cosmopolitan Tennis Club in the Sugar Hill section of Harlem. In 1941 she entered—and won—her first tournament, the American Tennis Association (ATA) New York State Championship. She won the ATA national championship in the girls' division in 1944 and 1945, and after losing in the women's final in 1946, she won her first of ten straight national ATA women's titles in 1947. "I knew that I was an unusual, talented girl, through the grace of God," she wrote. "I didn't need to prove that to myself. I only wanted to prove it to my opponents."
Gibson's ATA success drew the attention of Walter Johnson, a Lynchburg, Virginia, physician who was active in the African American tennis community. Under Johnson's patronage—he would later mentor Arthur Ashe as well—Gibson gained access to more advanced instruction and more important competitions, and later, to the United States Tennis Association (USTA). In 1946 she moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, under the sponsorship of another physician and tennis activist, Hubert A. Eaton and enrolled at Williston High School. In 1949 she became the first black woman, and the second black athlete (after Reginald Weir), to play in the USTA's National Indoor Championships, where she reached the quarter-finals. Later that year she entered Florida A&M University on a full athletic scholarship.
Amateur career
In 1950, in response to intense lobbying by ATA officials and Alice Marble—who published a scathing open letter in the magazineAmerican Lawn Tennis—Gibson received an invitation to compete in the United States National Championships (now the U.S. Open) at Forest Hills. She was the first black player ever selected, and made her debut on her 23rd birthday. Although she lost narrowly in the second round in a rain-delayed, three-set match to Louise Brough, the reigning Wimbledon champion and former U.S. National winner, her participation received extensive national and international coverage. "No Negro player, man or woman, has ever set foot on one of these courts," wrote journalist Lester Rodney at the time. "In many ways, it is even a tougher personal Jim Crow-busting assignment than was Jackie Robinson's when he first stepped out of the Brooklyn Dodgers dugout."
In 1951 Gibson won her first international title, the Caribbean Championships in Jamaica, and later that year became the first black competitor at Wimbledon, where she was defeated in the third round by Beverly Baker. In 1952 she was ranked seventh nationally by the USTA. In the spring of 1953 she graduated from Florida A&M and took a job teaching physical education at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. During her two years at Lincoln she became romantically involved with an Army officer whom she never named publicly, and considered enlisting in the Women's Army Corps, but decided against it when the State Department sent her on a goodwill tour of Asia in 1955 to play exhibition matches with Ham Richardson, Bob Perry, and Karol Fageros. Many Asians in the countries they visited—Burma, Ceylon, India, Pakistan, and Thailand—"...felt an affinity to Althea as a woman of color and were delighted to see her as part of an official U.S. delegation. With the United States grappling over the question of race, they turned to Althea for answers, or at least to get a firsthand perspective." Gibson, for her part, strengthened her confidence immeasurably during the six-week tour. When it was over, she remained abroad, winning 16 of 18 tournaments in Europe and Asia against many of the world's best players.
In 1956 Gibson became the first African-American athlete to win a Grand Slam event, the French Open singles championship. She also won the doubles title, partnered with Briton Angela Buxton. Later in the season she won the Wimbledon doubles championship (again with Buxton), the Italian national championship in Rome, and the Asian championship in Ceylon. She also reached the quarter-finals in singles at Wimbledon and the finals at the U.S. Nationals, losing both to Shirley Fry.
1957 was, in her own words, "Althea Gibson's year". In July she won Wimbledon—considered, at the time, the "world championship of tennis". She was the first black champion in the tournament's 80-year history, and the first champion to receive the trophy personally from Queen Elizabeth II. "Shaking hands with the queen of England," she said, "was a long way from being forced to sit in the colored section of the bus." She won the doubles championship as well, for the second year. Upon her return home Gibson became only the second black American, after Jesse Owens, to be honored with a ticker tape parade in New York City, and Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Jr. presented her with the Bronze Medallion, the city's highest civilian award. A month later she defeated Brough in straight sets to win her first U.S. National championship. "Winning Wimbledon was wonderful," she wrote, "and it meant a lot to me. But there is nothing quite like winning the championship of your own country." In all she reached the finals of eight Grand Slam events in 1957, winning the Wimbledon and U.S. National singles titles, the Wimbledon and Australian doubles championships, and the U.S. mixed doubles crown, and finishing second in Australian singles, U.S. doubles, and Wimbledon mixed doubles. At season's end she broke yet another barrier as the first black player on the U.S. Wightman Cup team, which defeated Great Britain 6–1.
In 1958 Gibson successfully defended her Wimbledon and U.S. National singles titles, and won her third straight Wimbledon doubles championship, with a third different partner. She was the number-one-ranked woman in the world and in the United States in both 1957 and 1958, and was named Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in both years, garnering over 80% of the votes in 1958. She also became the first black woman to appear on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Time.
Professional career
In late 1958, having won 56 national and international singles and doubles titles, including 11 Grand Slam championships, Gibson retired from amateur tennis. Prior to the Open Era there was no prize money at major tournaments, and direct endorsement deals were prohibited. Players were limited to meager expense allowances, strictly regulated by the USTA. "The truth, to put it bluntly, is that my finances were in heartbreaking shape," she wrote. "Being the Queen of Tennis is all well and good, but you can't eat a crown. Nor can you send the Internal Revenue Service a throne clipped to their tax forms. The landlord and grocer and tax collector are funny that way: they like cold cash ... I reign over an empty bank account, and I'm not going to fill it by playing amateur tennis." Professional tours for women were still 15 years away, so her opportunities were largely limited to promotional events. In 1959 she signed to play a series of exhibition matches against Karol Fageros before Harlem Globetrotter basketball games. When the tour ended she won the singles and doubles titles at the Pepsi Cola World Pro Tennis Championships in Cleveland, but received only $500 in prize money.
During this period, Gibson also pursued her long-held aspirations in the entertainment industry. A talented vocalist and saxophonist—and runner-up in the Apollo Theater's amateur talent contest in 1943—she made her professional singing debut at W. C. Handy's 84th birthday tribute at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1957. An executive from Dot Records was impressed with her performance, and signed her to record an album of popular standards. Althea Gibson Sings was released in 1959, and Gibson performed two of its songs onThe Ed Sullivan Show in May and July of that year, but sales were disappointing. She appeared as a celebrity guest on the TV panel show What's My Line? and was cast as a slave woman in the John Ford motion picture The Horse Soldiers (1959), which was notable for her refusal to speak in the stereotypic "Negro" dialect mandated by the script. She also worked as a sports commentator, appeared in print and television advertisements for various products, and increased her involvement in social issues and community activities. In 1960 her first memoir, I Always Wanted to Be Somebody, written with sportswriter Ed Fitzgerald, was published.
Her professional tennis career, however, was going nowhere. "When I looked around me, I saw that white tennis players, some of whom I had thrashed on the court, were picking up offers and invitations," she wrote. "Suddenly it dawned on me that my triumphs had not destroyed the racial barrier once and for all, as I had—perhaps naively—hoped. Or if I did destroy them, they had been erected behind me again."
In 1964, at the age of 37, Gibson became the first African-American woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour. Racial discrimination continued to be a problem: Many hotels still excluded people of color, and country club officials throughout the south—and some in the north—routinely refused to allow her to compete. When she did compete, she was often forced to dress for tournaments in her car because she was banned from the clubhouse. Although she was one of the LPGA's top 50 money winners for five years, and won a car at a Dinah Shore tournament, her lifetime golf earnings never exceeded $25,000. She made financial ends meet with various sponsorship deals and the support of her husband, William Darben, brother of best friend and fellow tennis player Rosemary Darben, whom she married in 1965 (and divorced in 1976).
While she broke course records during individual rounds in several tournaments, Gibson's highest ranking was 27th in 1966, and her best tournament finish was a tie for second after a three-way playoff at the 1970 Len Immke Buick Open. She retired from professional golf at the end of the 1978 season. "Althea might have been a real player of consequence had she started when she was young," said Judy Rankin. "She came along during a difficult time in golf, gained the support of a lot of people, and quietly made a difference."
In 1976 Gibson made it to the finals of the ABC television program Superstars, finishing first in basketball shooting and bowling, and runner-up in softball throwing. With the advent of the Open Era she began entering major tennis tournaments again; but by then, in her forties, she was unable to compete effectively against younger players. She also attempted a golf comeback, in 1987, with the goal of becoming the oldest active tour player, but was unable to regain her tour card. In a second memoir, So Much to Live For, she articulated her disappointments, including unfulfilled aspirations, the paucity of endorsements and other professional opportunities, and the many obstacles of all sorts that were thrown in her path over the years.
In 1972 she began running Pepsi Cola's national mobile tennis project, which brought portable nets and other equipment to underprivileged areas in major cities. She ran multiple other clinics and tennis outreach programs over the next three decades, and coached numerous rising competitors, including Leslie Allen and Zina Garrison. "She pushed me as if I were a pro, not a junior," wrote Garrison in her 2001 memoir. "I owe the opportunity I received to her."
In the early 1970s Gibson began directing women's sports and recreation for the Essex County Parks Commission in New Jersey. In 1976 she was appointed New Jersey's athletic commissioner, the first woman in the country to hold such a role, but resigned after one year due to lack of autonomy, budgetary oversight, and adequate funding. "I don't wish to be a figurehead," she said. In 1977 she challenged incumbent Essex County State Senator Frank J. Dodd in the Democratic primary for his seat. She came in second behind Dodd, but ahead of Assemblyman Eldridge Hawkins. Gibson went on to manage the Department of Recreation in East Orange, New Jersey. She also served on the State Athletic Control Board and became supervisor of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. In 1983 she married Sydney Llewellyn, her coach during her peak tennis years. That marriage also ended in divorce, after five years; she had no children.
In the late 1980s Gibson suffered two cerebral hemorrhages and in 1992, a stroke. Ongoing medical expenses depleted her financial resources, leaving her unable to afford her rent or medication. Though she reached out to multiple tennis organizations requesting help, none responded. Former doubles partner Angela Buxton made Gibson's plight known to the tennis community, and raised nearly $1 million in donations from around the world.
In early 2003 Gibson survived a heart attack, but died on September 28, 2003, at the age of 76 from complications following respiratory and bladder infections. She was interred in the Rosedale Cemetery in Orange, New Jersey, near her first husband, Will Darben.
Legacy
It would be 15 years before another woman of color—Evonne Goolagong, in 1971—won a Grand Slam championship; and 43 years before another African-American woman, Serena Williams, won her first of six U.S. Opens in 1999, not long after faxing a letter and list of questions to Gibson. Serena's sister Venus then won back-to-back titles at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2000 and 2001, repeating Gibson's accomplishment of 1957 and 1958.
In 1980 Gibson became one of the first six inductees into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame, placing her on par with such pioneers as Amelia Earhart, Wilma Rudolph, Gertrude Ederle, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, and Patty Berg. Other inductions included the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, the Black Athletes Hall of Fame, the Sports Hall of Fame of New Jersey, the New Jersey Hall of Fame, the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame, and the International Women's Hall of Fame.
In 1991 Gibson became the first woman to receive the Theodore Roosevelt Award, the highest honor from the National Collegiate Athletic Association; she was cited for "symbolizing the best qualities of competitive excellence and good sportsmanship, and for her significant contributions to expanding opportunities for women and minorities through sports." Sports Illustrated for Women named her to its list of the "100 Greatest Female Athletes". In August 2013 the United States Postal Service issued a postage stamp honoring Gibson, the 36th in its Black Heritage series.
In a 1977 historical analysis of women in sports, New York Times columnist William C. Rhoden wrote, "Althea Gibson and Wilma Rudolph are, without question, the most significant athletic forces among black women in sports history. While Rudolph's accomplishments brought more visibility to women as athletes ... Althea's accomplishments were more revolutionary because of the psychosocial impact on black America. Even to those blacks who hadn't the slightest idea of where or what Wimbledon was, her victory, like Jackie Robinson's in baseball and Jack Johnson's in boxing, proved again that blacks, when given an opportunity, could compete at any level in American society."
On opening night of the 2007 U.S. Open, the 50th anniversary of her first victory at its predecessor, the U.S. Championships, in 1957, Gibson was inducted into the US Open Court of Champions. "It was the quiet dignity with which Althea carried herself during the turbulent days of the 1950s that was truly remarkable," said USTA president Alan Schwartz, at the ceremony. "[Her] legacy ... lives on not only in the stadiums of professional tournaments, but also in schools and parks throughout the nation. Every time a black child or a Hispanic child or an Islamic child picks up a tennis racket for the first time, Althea touches another life. When she began playing, less than five percent of tennis newcomers were minorities. Today, some 30 percent are minorities, two-thirds of whom are African American. This is her legacy."
Gibson's five Wimbledon trophies are displayed at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. The Althea Gibson Cup seniors tournament is held annually in Croatia, under the auspices of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The Althea Gibson Foundation identifies and supports gifted golf and tennis players who live in urban environments. In 2005 Gibson's friend Bill Cosby endowed the Althea Gibson Scholarship at her alma mater, Florida A&M University.
In September 2009 Wilmington, North Carolina, named its new community tennis court facility the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex at Empie Park. Other tennis facilities bearing her name include Manning High School (near her birthplace in Silver, South Carolina), the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina, Florida A&M University, and Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey. In 2012 a bronze statue, created by sculptor Thomas Jay Warren, was dedicated to her memory in Branch Brook Park. "I hope that I have accomplished just one thing," she once wrote, "that I have been a credit to tennis, and to my country." "By all measures," reads the inscription on her Newark statue, "Althea Gibson certainly attained that goal."

Early life and career
Khan was born in a Punjabi Muslim with Pathan ancestry family in Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan, in 1948, shortly after the partition of India in 1947 during which his family had migrated to Pakistan from their native city of Jalandhar in Punjab, British India (now in Punjab, India). His family originates from Pathan bastis (Pashtun stelements) in Jalandhar. His ancestors learned music and singing there and adopted it as a profession.[16] He was the fifth child and first son of Fateh Ali Khan, a musicologist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and qawwal. Khan’s family, which included four older sisters and a younger brother, Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, grew up in central Faisalabad. The tradition of qawwali in the family had passed down through successive generations for almost 600 years. Initially, his father did not want Khan to follow the family’s vocation. He had his heart set on Nusrat choosing a much more respectable career path and becoming a doctor or engineer because he felt Qawwali artists had low social status. However, Khan showed such an aptitude for and interest in Qawwali, that his father finally relented.[18]He began by learning the tabla before moving on to vocals.[citation needed] In 1964, Khan’s father died, leaving his musical education under the supervision of his paternal uncles, Mubarak Ali Khan and Salamat Ali Khan. He is the uncle of singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Nusrat was known as Pervaiz until he visited Ghulam Ghaus Samdani who changed his name to Nusrat Fateh Ali. Samdani also told him that he would become a great singer.
In 1971, after the death of his uncle Mubarak Ali Khan, Khan became the official leader of the family Qawwali party and the party became known as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mujahid Mubarak Ali Khan & Party. Khan’s first public performance as the leader of the Qawwali party was at a studio recording broadcast as part of an annual music festival organized by Radio Pakistan, known as Jashn-e-Baharan. Khan sang mainly in Urdu and Punjabi and occasionally in Persian, Braj Bhasha and Hindi. His first major hit in Pakistan was the song Haq Ali Ali, which was performed in a traditional style and with traditional instrumentation. The song featured restrained use of Khan’s sargam improvisations.

Later career
In the summer of 1985, Khan performed at the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival in London. He performed in Paris in 1985 and 1988. He first visited Japan in 1987, at the invitation of the Japan Foundation. He performed at the 5th Asian Traditional Performing Art Festival in Japan. He also performed at Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York in 1989, earning him admiration from the American audience.
Khan, throughout his career, had great understanding with many south Asian singers such as Alam Lohar, the Noor Jehan, and various other Pakistani and Indian singers.
In the 1992 to 1993 academic year, Khan was a Visiting Artist in the Ethnomusicology department at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, United States.
In 1988, Khan teamed up with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ, which led to Khan being signed to Gabriel’s Real World label. He would go on to release five albums of traditional Qawwali through Real World, along with the more experimental albums Mustt Mustt (1990), Night Song (1996), and the posthumous remix album Star Rise (1997).
Khan’s experimental work for Real World, which featured his collaborations with the Canadian guitarist Michael Brook, spurred on several further collaborations with a number of other Western composers and rock musicians. One of the most noteworthy of these collaborations came in 1995, when Khan grouped with Pearl Jam’s lead singer Eddie Vedder on two songs for the soundtrack to Dead Man Walking. Khan also provided vocals for The Prayer Cycle, which was put together by Jonathan Elias, but died before the tracks could be completed. Alanis Morissette was brought in to sing with his unfinished vocals. In 2002, Gabriel included Khan’s vocals on the posthumously released track “Signal to Noise” on his album Up.
Khan’s album Intoxicated Spirit was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in 1997. That same year, his album Night Song was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
Khan contributed songs to, and performed in, several Pakistani films. Shortly before his death, he composed music for three Bollywood films, which includes the film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, in which he also sang for “Koi Jaane Koi Na Jaane” on-screen with the lead pair, and “Zindagi Jhoom Kar”. He also composed music for Kartoos, where he sang for “Ishq Da Rutba”, and “Bahaa Na Aansoo”, alongside Udit Narayan. He died very shortly prior to the movie’s release. His final music composition for Bollywood was for the movie, Kachche Dhaage, where he sang in “Iss Shaan-E-Karam Ka Kya Kehna”. The movie was released in 1999, two years after his death. The two singing sisters of Bollywood, Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar sang for the songs he composed in his brief stint in Bollywood. He also sang “Saya Bhi Saath Jab Chhod Jaye” for Sunny Deol’s movie Dillagi. The song was released in 1999, two years after Khan’s death. He also sang “Dulhe Ka Sehra” from the Bollywood movie Dhadkanwhich was released in 2000.
Khan contributed the song “Gurus of Peace” to the 1997 album Vande Mataram, composed by A. R. Rahman, and released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of India’s independence. As a posthumous tribute, Rahman later released an album titled Gurus of Peace, which included “Allah Hoo” by Khan. Rahman’s 2007 song “Tere Bina” for the film Guru was also composed as a tribute to Khan.
Death
Various reports said Khan weighed over 300 pounds. He had been seriously ill for several months, according to a spokesperson at his U.S. label, American Recordings.[27] After traveling to London from his native Pakistan for treatment for liver and kidney problems, he was rushed from the airport to Cromwell Hospital in London.
He died of a sudden cardiac arrest at Cromwell Hospital on 16 August 1997, aged 48. His body was repatriated to Faisalabad, and his funeral was a public affair. He was buried in Kabootran Wala Qabristan also known as Jhang Road Graveyard on Jhang Road, Faisalabad.
His wife, Naheed Nusrat, died on 13 September 2013 in Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Naheed had moved to Canada after the death of her husband. She is survived by their daughter Nida Khan.[29][30] Khan’s musical legacy is now carried forward by his nephews, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Rizwan-Muazzam.

26th January 2018 Republic Day Speech In Hindi, English, Telugu, Kannada For Students
The Sixty fifth Republic Day of India was celebrated in Port Moresby on 26th January, 2014 with enthusiasm. I would like to say good morning to My Respected Principal, Sir, Madam and my dear colleagues. As we all know that we get together here to celebrate 67th Republic Day of our nation. This is very auspicious occasion for all of us. Since 1950, we are celebrating Republic Day every year with lots of joy and happiness. Before starting the celebration, our chief guest of the Republic Day hoists the national flag of India Then we all stand up and sing our Indian national anthem which is a symbol unity and peace in India. Our National Anthem is written by the great poet Rabindranath Tagore.
As we celebrate republic day on 26th January as the Indian constitution came into force on this day in 1950. On Republic day there is a big arrangement takes place by the government of India in New Delhi at Rajpath in front of the India gate. Every year the prime minister of India is a chief guest for hosting the Indian flag at Rajpath.
Tumblr media
In India 26th of January is celebrated as Republic Day every year because that constitution of India came into a drive on this day. It is praised as the national celebration of India which has been pronounced as the national occasion. Gandhi Jayanti and Independence Day are two another national occasions. On 26th of January in 1950 our nation turned out to be completely vote based republic after reinforcement of the Constitution of India in the Indian Parliament.
Firstly your 26 jan republic day speech is attractive and motivating. Republic day is a Nation Festival of India. On this day our constitution was developed. On 26 January 1950, our constitution developed on the presence of Jawahar Lal Nehru. When you want to give the speech in English used some motivation, feeling for our country word and makes your speech to inspirable another one.
As US President Donald Trump embarked on his controversial England tour, it was learnt that New Delhi has invited him as the chief guest for the Republic Day parade in 2019. Even for a government that routinely confuses foreign policy with public relations, this is a chancy move. After all, Trump has a well-developed reputation for enjoying the pageantry while simultaneously befouling his hosts from a high altitude. Yet the invitation casts into sharp relief the Prime Minister's faith in the power of his personal diplomacy as well as his desire for a special relationship with the United States. It also underscores the government's continuing inability to get the measure of US policies under Trump.
The other possibility is to have Argentinian President Mauricio Macri as the chief guest. This too is being considered because he will be in India in January-end next year. Before the meeting between the two sides next year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be meeting him at the G-20 summit in November as Argentina is the host country.
Happy Republic Day is the single day with all the beautiful seasons of India. For every Indian, this is the day of autumn and breeze, day of cooling summer nights and sunny winters, day full of glorious victory over British rule. To celebrate this beautiful day with full enthusiasm and zeal, lot many celebrations are planned every year including parade from the military and navy forces. Cultural programs from all the regions of India are presented on this day. President of India takes the army salute and Prime Minister pays tribute to the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti. For making the day more special, every year a guest of honor is invited to India especially for the grand celebrations of Happy Republic Day.
Every year the main celebration of national holiday is take place in new Delhi(capital of India). In 2017, India was celebrate 68th republic day, now we are going to celebrate 70th India's republic day. Get ready for 70th celebration of republic day. In school programs kids participates on Republic Day Poem programs. So this 26 January Poem Lines will help you to win the competition.

India’s Siraj, hero of Australia series, visits father’s grave
Tumblr media
While his Indian cricket team-mates lapped up the acclaim after returning from their triumphant Australia tour, Mohammed Siraj drove straight from Hyderabad airport to a burial ground to pay his respects to his father, who passed away in November.
The right-arm quick was one of the heroes of India’s epic 2-1 series victory in Australia, where he finished as their leading wicket-taker.
After his father, Mohammed Ghouse, died on November 20, the pacer’s mother and India captain Virat Kohli urged him to stay on in Australia rather than head home to grieve with his family, despite having no assurances he would feature in the series.
His chance came in Melbourne, where he made his Test debut in place of Mohammed Shami, who had broken his elbow in the series opener in Adelaide.
Siraj then found himself leading India’s injury-ravaged pace attack in the Brisbane decider, where he claimed his maiden five-wicket haul to finish the series with 13 wickets from his three Tests.
“It was the most difficult time for me to be there at his burial place,” the 26-year-old told local media after laying flowers on his father’s grave on Thursday.
“I was just circling unknowingly, never thought would have go through such a phase.”

— ANI (@ANI) January 21, 2021
Siraj’s father, an auto-rickshaw driver, died as the Indian cricketers were in quarantine in Australia, but the player decided to stay with the team.
“First of all, it was very difficult for me. Mentally I was upset and depressed,” he said. “I had a chat with them back home and they said that I should complete dad’s dream .”
The Hyderabad player will hope to maintain his good form after being retained in the squad for the first two Tests of a four-match series against England.
‘Abuse made me mentally strong’
Siraj’s mental strength was further tested in Sydney where a section of the crowd targeted him during the Australia Test series.
In his first public account of the abuse, he said it made him “mentally strong”.
“The abuse from some in the Australian crowd made me mentally strong,” Siraj said on Friday. “The fact that I did not allow that abuse to have an effect on my game was important.”
Siraj said India declined an offer from the umpires to walk off the field as players were abused in the third Test in Sydney.
Tumblr media
Police remove a group of spectators from their seats after Siraj complained to umpires of being racially abused during the third Test match between Australia and India at Sydney
According to Indian media, shouts of “monkey” and other insults rang out when Siraj and fellow fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah were fielding near the boundary.
“The crowd in Australia began to abuse me but it made me mentally strong. I did not let it affect my game and that was important,” said Siraj.
“I told my captain Ajju Bhai about the abuse and he spoke to the umpires who said you can leave the field. But Rahane said: ‘We will play on.'”
He said Rahane told the umpires to take action over the abuse. Six fans were ejected and an investigation into the incident is under way.
Siraj emerged as a national player after becoming a key man for Indian Premier League side Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are led by India’s regular captain Virat Kohli.
“I had a bad season in 2018, but RCB backed me. Virat Bhai has always backed me, saying, ‘You have the power and you can do it’,” he said.
“I will not let this performance go to my head. I cannot relax as there is the England series and the World Test Championship coming up.”

JAIPUR CITY TOUR ITINERARY
1. Amber Fort
One of the top tourist attractions of Jaipur, the huge Amer Palace Fort sits atop a small hill, and is located at a distance about 11 km from the main city. The magnificent Amer Fort is an extensive palace complex that has been built with pale yellow and pink sandstone, and with white marble. The fort is divided into four main sections that are graced with their own courtyards. As you arrive at the Amer Fort, you will enter through the Suraj Pol; unless you arrive by car, then you enter via the Chand Pol. Both these gates open into the Jaleb Chowk, which is the main courtyard, where in earlier times, returning armies used to display their plunder to the people. The fort has a number of sections, including the King’s quarters, the zenana (where the women lived), gardens, temples, etc. There are a lot of attractions for one to see at the Amer Fort, including the diwan-e-aam, such mandir, and the Sheesh Mahal. Amer Fort is also home to some underground tunnels that connect Amer to Jaigarh Fort. A part of these tunnels has been restored, and is now open to public as well. Encompassing all this, the Amer Fort is a perfect example of Rajasthani architecture which is a must-visit.
The essence of Amer Fort is encapsulated by the beautiful light and sound show within the fort, where visitors get to see an astounding spectacle about the history of the fort.
2.Jal mahal
Jal Mahal or the Water Palace is one of the most majestic places to see in Jaipur. The city is dotted with marvelous architectural beauties and Jal Mahal stands at the forefront of these works of art. Standing amidst the center of Man Sagar Lake, the palace, when you first look at it, will give you the illusion of almost floating atop the lake and that is the moment when this sight takes your breath away.
The palace is not too high and has four dome-shaped pillars at four corners with a big one in the center. Jal Mahal was once the shooting lodging for the Maharaja of Jaipur and is now one of the landmarks of Jaipur Colourful Rajasthan.
Though the city of Jaipur has earned itself the moniker of the pink city because of pink stone being used in most of its buildings, Jal Mahal is unique due to red sandstone used in its construction. Today, visitors cannot explore the palace as a tourist attraction since the place has been converted into a restaurant and entry to visitors has been stopped.
Though there is no official record of the exact period of origin of Jal Mahal, legend has it that it was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, whose idea behind building this palace was to use it as a hunting lodge for his duck shooting adventures and not as a palace to stay. The origin of the lake can also be attributed to him as it was formed when a dam was constructed between the hills which led to the formation of the lake.
Another legend says that it was built by Maharaja Madho Singh in the 1750s to serve as a hunting lodge. His son Madho Singh II had a big role to play in enhancing the interiors of Jal Mahal during the 18th century when he added the courtyard grounds which are still a part of this palace.
3.Hawa mahal
Situated at Badi Choupad, Pink City of Jaipur, Hawa Mahal was built in 1799. It has 953 windows on the outside walls. The honeycomb shaped and beautifully carved windows allow breeze to blow through the palace and makes it a perfect summer palace. It was built as an extension to the city palace near by. See below for more information about Hawa Mahal.
In 1799, the Kachhwaha Rajput ruler, Sawai Pratap Singh, grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh ordered Lal Chand Usta to construct an extension to the Royal City Palace. The Purdah system at the time was strictly followed. Rajput royal ladies should not be seen by strangers or appear in any public area. The construction of Hawa Mahal allows the royal ladies to enjoy from every day street scenes to royal processions on the street without being seen
4.City Palace
The City Palace, Jaipur was established at the same time as the city of Jaipur, by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who moved his court to Jaipur from Amber, in 1727.
5.Jantar Mantar
The Jantar Mantar, Jaipur is a collection of 19 astronomical instruments built by the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The monument was completed in 1734. It features the world’s largest stone sundial, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is near City Palace and Hawa Mahal.
6.Albert Hall Museum
The Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur is the oldest museum of the state and functions as the state museum of Rajasthan, India. The building is situated in Ram Niwas garden outside the city wall opposite New gate and is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. It is also called the Government Central Museum.

Right place for jewelry lovers especially who are keenly interested in gemstones. This market place as its very name depicts is a place where from hard core traditional to contemporary jewelry style offers a plethora of options to buy.
Handmade bags, camel leather bags, footwears, artifact and traditional to modern apparels…practically Bapu Bazaar has everything someone is looking for buying as souvenir.
Local & traditional shops clad with colorful Lac bangles make this market of special attraction. This special material is used in making shiny, bright, colorful and designer bangles which forms a core part of the accessory in fashion culture in Jaipur and mostly with rest of India. The unique design and shine of these bangles make them highly demanded in the international market too.
Carpets, turban, exquisite handicraft items, designer shoes and for handcrafted delicate marble artefact Maansarovar is the right place. Most of the shops have existed for more than 60-70 years. People love to shop  from these narrow and packed streets even in today’s time for its cost effectiveness and attachment with the old culture of the city.
Buying apparels as souvenirs is best suggested to be shopped from  Market. The traditional shops offer a great variety of traditional as well as contemporary cloth at much cheaper rate. Plus the fun of exploring the traditional marketplace comes truly alive as soon as one enters this market place.

Shane Warne wants MS Dhoni to play for London Spirit in The Hundred Tournament | ViralHai News [ad_1]
Tumblr media
Retiring from international cricket, Australian spin legend Shane Warne now wants Mahendra Singh Dhoni to get on with the game and be a part of his team London Spirit in The Hundred Tournament next year.
Former India captain Dhoni, the two-time World Cup winner, retired on Saturday, leading to speculation about his future. Warne said he should give a hundred serious thoughts right now.
"I wonder if I can meet him next year for the London Spirit in a hundred. I can call to see if he wants to play at Lords. I'll get the money, MS !," Warne reported . Sky sports.
The Hundred is a 100-ball per-tournament for the England and Wales Cricket Board which was to be launched in June this year, but had to be postponed the following year due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

- Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) August 15, 2020
Paying tribute to Dhoni, Warne said: "A brilliant cricketer. You think of some of the games he won for India, for his comeback.
"And you think of his captaincy, his leadership, he was a brilliant competitor and an amazing player. He would go down in history as an all-time great wicketkeeper-batsman.
"He had a peace of mind about him which was fantastic and he was always out of his team, be it India, Chennai Super Kings, whatever."
Dhoni is the only captain in the history of the game to have won all the ICC Trophies. Under him, India won the 2007 World Twenty20, 2010 and 2016 Asia Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.
Former England captains Naseer Hussain and Michael Atherton also paid tribute to Dhoni, describing him as "the best white ball captain" and "great finisher".
Hussain said, "A calm, calm customer under pressure; a great finisher of a game, the game is not won until you dismiss Dhoni."
"I will remember hitting that six at the Wankhede Stadium to win the World Cup in 2011. He was a fantastic player," Atherton said.
Dhoni, who last played for India during the 2019 World Cup, has scored more than 17,000 international runs in 538 appearances. The 39-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman also won three IPL trophies with Chennai Super Kings.
Former Pakistan captain and fast bowler Wasim Akram praised his wide-ranging calm nature.
"I saw him when he started his cricketing career, his first tour in Pakistan (in 2006), he became a mega hit because of his long hair, his batting - he got runs on that tour (a first Test century), " said.
"As a captain, I always thought he was very calm, no one is in a position. And when you are as calm as a captain, you make the right decision. If you panic, the whole team Gets nervous and Dhoni was not one of them. "
"He was a treat to watch, as long as he wasn't playing against Pakistan," Akram quipped.
One-day captain Mithali Raj of the Indian women's team also congratulated her illustrious career.
"The man who immortalized the Jersey No.7, whose sharp mind and head gave him the tag of #CaptionCool, the man who fulfilled billions of Indian dreams by two World Cup trophies and who bid in his inept style. Congratulations. #MSDhoni an outstanding career, ”she tweeted.

Celia Cruz
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso, also known by her stage name Celia Cruz (October 21, 1925 – July 16, 2003), was a Cuban singer of Latin music. The most popular Latin artist of the 20th century, she earned twenty-three gold albums and was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts. She was renowned internationally as the "Queen of Salsa", "La Guarachera de Cuba", as well as The Queen of Latin Music.
She spent much of her career working in the United States and several Latin American countries. Leila Cobo of Billboard Magazine once said "Cruz is indisputably the best known and most influential female figure in the history of Cuban and Latin music".
Early life
Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso was born on October 21, 1925 in the diverse, working-class neighborhood of Santos Suárez in Havana, Cuba, the second of four children. Her father, Simon Cruz, was a railroad stoker and her mother, Catalina Alfonso was a homemaker who took care of an extended family of fourteen.
While growing up in Cuba's diverse 1930s musical climate, Cruz listened to many musicians who influenced her adult career, including Fernando Collazo, Abelardo Barroso, Pablo Quevedo and Arsenio Rodríguez. Despite her mother's opposition and the fact that she was Catholic, as a child Cruz learned santería songs from her neighbor who practiced santería. Cruz also later studied the words to Yoruba songs with colleague Mercedita Valdés (an Akpwon santería singer) from Cuba and made various recordings of this religious genre, even singing backup for other female akpwons like Candita Batista.
As a teenager, her aunt took her and her cousin to cabarets to sing, but her father encouraged her to attend school in the hope she would become a teacher. However, one of her teachers told her that as an entertainer she could earn in one day what most Cuban teachers earned in a month. Cruz began singing at Havana's radio station Radio García Serra as a contestant on this station's popular "Hora del Té" daily broadcast, where she sang the tango "Nostalgias" and won a cake as first-place finisher. She often won cakes and also opportunities to participate in more contests. Her first recordings were made in 1948 in Venezuela.
Career
With Sonora Matancera, she appeared in cameos in some Mexican films such as Rincón Criollo (1950), Una gallega en La Habana(1955) and Amorcito Corazón (1961).
When Fidel Castro assumed control of Cuba in 1959, Cruz and her husband, Pedro Knight, were prohibited from returning to their homeland and became citizens of the United States. In 1966, Cruz and Tito Puente began an association that would lead to eight albums for Tico Records. The albums were not as successful as expected. However, Puente and Cruz later joined the Vaya Records label. There, she joined accomplished pianist Larry Harlow and was soon headlining a concert at New York's Carnegie Hall.
Cruz's 1974 album with Johnny Pacheco, Celia y Johnny, was very successful, and Cruz soon found herself in a group named the Fania All-Stars, which was an ensemble of salsa musicians from every orchestra signed by the Fania label (owner of Vaya Records). With the Fania All-Stars, Cruz had the opportunity to visit England, France, Zaire (today's DR Congo), and to return to tour Latin America; her performance in Zaire is included in the film Soul Power. In the late 1970s, she participated in an Eastern Air Lines commercial in Puerto Rico, singing the catchy phrase ¡Esto sí es volar! (This is to truly fly!).
In 1976, she participated in a documentary film Salsa about the Latin culture, along with figures like Dolores del Río and Willie Colón.
Celia Cruz used to sing the identifying spot for WQBA radio station in Miami, formerly known as "La Cubanísima": "I am the voice of Cuba, from this land, far away...I am liberty, I am WQBA, the most Cuban! (Yo soy de Cuba, la voz, desde esta tierra lejana...soy libertad, soy WQBA, Cubanísima!) During the 1980s, Cruz made many tours in Latin America and Europe, doing multiple concerts and television shows wherever she went, and singing both with younger stars and stars of her own era. She began a crossover of sorts, when she participated in the 1988 feature film Salsa alongside Robby Draco Rosa.
In 1990, Cruz won a Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance – Ray Barretto & Celia Cruz – Ritmo en el Corazón. She later recorded an anniversary album with Sonora Matancera. In 1992, she starred with Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas in the filmThe Mambo Kings. In 1994, President Bill Clinton awarded Cruz the National Medal of Arts. In the same year, she was inducted intoBillboards Latin Music Hall of Fame along with fellow Cuban musician Cachao López. In 1999, Cruz was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2001, she recorded a new album, on which Johnny Pacheco was one of the producers.
On July 16, 2002, Cruz performed to a full house at the free outdoor performing arts festival Central Park SummerStage in New York City. During the performance she sang "Bemba Colora'." A live recording of this song was subsequently made available in 2005 on a commemorative CD honoring the festival's then 20-year history entitled, "Central Park SummerStage: Live from the Heart of the City". Cruz appeared on the Dionne Warwick albums 1998 Dionne Sings Dionne & 2006 My Friends & Me with their Latin Duet version of (Do You Know The Way To) San Jose.
In March 2003, the Spanish-language television network Telemundo produced and aired a tribute special honoring Cruz, ¡Celia Cruz: Azúcar!. It was hosted by American singer Marc Anthony and Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan. It featured musical performances by various Latin music and Anglo performers including Victor Manuelle, Paulina Rubio, José Feliciano, Milly Quezada, Los Tri-O, Estefan, Patti Labelle, Arturo Sandoval, Ana Gabriel, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tito Nieves, Albita, Johnny Pacheco, Alicia Villareal, Olga Tañón, Mikey Perfecto, José Alberto "El Canario", Rosario, Luis Enrique, Anthony and Gloria Gaynor.
Death
On July 16, 2003, Cruz died of brain cancer at her home in Fort Lee, New Jersey, at the age of 77. Her husband, Pedro Knight (died February 3, 2007), was there for her while she was going through cancer treatments. She had no children with him. After her death, her body was taken to lie in state in Miami's Freedom Tower, where more than 200,000 fans paid their final respects. Multiple vigils occurred worldwide in cities such as Havana, Miami, and Cali (the Cali vigil became notorious in Colombian history due to its three-day span) Knight had Cruz buried in a granite mausoleum that he had built in Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York City earlier in 2003, when she was dying. Knight chose the plot on which it stands, which is near the gravestones of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis because it was accessible to fans and had four windows built into it so that fans could see inside when paying their respects. Knight was known to share his time there with visiting fans. Knight himself was buried with Cruz in the same mausoleum following his death on February 3, 2007. An epilogue in her autobiography notes that, in accordance with her wishes, Cuban soil which she had saved from a visit to Guantánamo Bay was used in her entombment.
Legacy
In February 2004, her last album, Regalo del Alma, won a posthumous award at the Premios Lo Nuestro for best salsa release of the year. It was announced in December 2005 that a musical called Azucar! would open in Tenerife before touring the world. The name comes from Cruz's well-known catch phrase of "¡Azúcar!"
On June 4, 2004, the heavily Cuban-American community of Union City, New Jersey heralded its annual Cuban Day Parade by dedicating its new Celia Cruz Park (also known as Celia Cruz Plaza), which features a sidewalk star in her honor, at 31st Street and Bergenline Avenue, with Cruz's widower, Pedro Knight, present. There are four other similar dedications to Cruz around the world. Cruz's star has expanded into Union City's "Walk of Fame", as new marble stars are added each spring to honor Latin entertainment and media personalities, such as merengue singer Joseíto Mateo, salsa singer La India, Cuban musician Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Cuban tenor Beny Moré, Tito Puente, Spanish language television news anchor Rafael Pineda, salsa pioneer Johnny Pacheco, singer/bandleader Gilberto Santa Rosa and music promoter Ralph Mercado.
On May 18, 2005, the National Museum of American History, administered by the Smithsonian Institution and located in Washington, D.C., opened "¡Azúcar!", an exhibit celebrating the life and music of Celia Cruz. The exhibit highlights important moments in Cruz's life and career through photographs, personal documents, costumes, videos, and music.
On September 26, 2007, through May 25, 2008, Celia, a musical based on the life of Celia Cruz, played at the off-Broadway venue, New World Stages. Some performances were in Spanish and some in English. The show won four 2008 HOLA awards from the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors.
On March 16, 2011, Celia Cruz was honored by the United States Postal Service with a commemorative postage stamp. The Cruz stamp was one of a group of five stamps honoring Latin music greats, also including Selena, Tito Puente, Carmen Miranda, and Carlos Gardel.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History collaborated with photographer Robert Weingarten to create an object-based portrait of Celia Cruz featuring artifacts in the museum. The portrait was unveiled October 3, 2012.
On October 21, 2013, Google honored her with a Google Doodle. At 41st American Music Awards, American singer Jennifer Lopez performed a medley of Cruz's songs.

UFO Guitar Legend Vinnie Moore To Release New Album “Soul Shifter”
NYC - The follow up to Vinnie’s critically acclaimed 2015 “AERIAL VISIONS” album will be released on October 9, on his label Mind's Eye Music. Titled “Soul Shifter”, Vinnie's 9th solo album features guest appearances by legendary artists Rudy Sarzo and Jordan Rudess, with Richie Monica on drums, Michael Bean (bassist from Vinnie’s TIME ODYSSEY album), John Cassidy (Keyboards), and John Pessoni (Drums).
Vinnie is considered one of the originators of shred guitar, and has released eight influential solo albums, and six albums and a LIVE DVD as a member of rock royalty legends UFO. He’s made countless album guest appearances, and has even recorded the soundtrack for a PEPSI TV commercial. He’s been a member of Alice Cooper’s band and was opening act for RUSH on their ROLL THE BONES tour with his own band. His solo and UFO recordings as well as LIVE performances have amassed rave reviews all around the globe from both fans and music press, catapulting him into guitar icon distinction! He has been an inspiration for fans and guitarists worldwide.
Say’s Vinnie, “I have been touring all over the world extensively with UFO and my solo band for the past 16 years. I started this album a couple years back and have been working on it religiously between tours. It’s quite different than any of my others. It has elements of things I’ve done in the past, but has gone much deeper into certain areas. There is an overall sort of contrast between energetic upbeat songs, versus ballad-like soulful ones which has always been a big part of my style. There are some Jam elements in places too. This is likely the most emotional and soulful thing I have ever done. Very moody, with lots of feel”. “I wrote a song as a tribute to Carlos Santana, called BROTHER CARLOS, and another called GAINESVILLE STATION which is a tip of the hat to Steve Gaines. Both players were huge influences on me when I was learning to play, and continue to be now”.
“He’s hands down the greatest Moore since Demi, Roger, Dudley and Mary Tyler”, and the greatest Vinnie since Vinnie Barbarino.” – Johnny JizzleJam, Planet Guitar Gods Magazine
“When something moves me, what I am feeling flows directly into music. That’s how I deal with reality. I woke up one morning to the news that Chris Cornell had passed and it really hit me hard. I went into my studio, picked up a guitar and immediately wrote and recorded MYSTIFIED. Without intending to do so, and because of what was going on around me at the time, this album in a way became a tribute to people who meant something to me. The Allman Brothers were always one of my favorite bands and I was working on a song called SOUL RIDER that was inspired by them. While writing it, unfortunately Greg Allman left us. A lot of heart went into recording that song. Also, I wrote a song called HEARD YOU WERE GONE for my friend and band mate Elliott (Dean Guitars) who left us unexpectedly a couple years back.
“There are definitely some downhearted cathartic moments on this album, but they’re balanced out with songs like KUNG FU GRIP and FUNK BONE JAM that represent the opposite side of my personality, which is my constant joking and goofball sense of humor”.
Vinnie has done hundreds of shows all over the planet, including Europe, UK, Scandinavia, Brazil, USA, as well as India, S. Korea, Lebanon, Mexico, Russia, and Canada. The UFO “Last Orders” tour began in England in March, and will continue in the USA on October 9.
“Ancient astronaut theorists suggest that Vinnie may have been spawned from alien DNA! Or at least his left index finger anyway” – Giorgio Thessaloniki, Ancient Aliens
“Solo records are a great vehicle because the canvas is totally open and I can paint whatever and wherever I want. There’s total freedom in not having boundaries. All of my influences are on the canvas, from Rock to Blues to Be-Bop to Funk, even R&B and beyond. I have always felt music deeply even before I played guitar. After I began playing, it became my vehicle to express and release what I feel inside. I love channeling my soul into melodies and songs.”

Tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab the maestro of qawwali and sufi music on his 20th death anniversary
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (13 October 1948 – 16 August 1997), was a Pakistani musician, primarily a singer of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis. He possessed an extraordinary range of vocal abilities and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours. Extending the 600-year old Qawwali tradition of his family, Khan is widely credited with introducing Qawwali music to international audiences. He is popularly known as "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali", meaning "The King of Kings of Qawwali".
Born in Faisalabad, Khan had his first public performance at the age of 16, at his father's chelum. He became the head of the family qawwali party in 1971. He was signed by Oriental Star Agencies, Birmingham, England, in the early 1980s. Khan went on to release movie scores and albums in Europe, India, Japan, Pakistan and the US. He engaged in collaborations and experiments with Western artists, becoming a well-known world music artist. He toured extensively, performing in over 40 countries.
Khan is often credited as one of the progenitors of "world music". Widely acclaimed for his spiritual charisma and distinctive exuberance, he was one of the first and most important artists to popularise Qawwali, then considered an "arcane religious tradition", to Western audiences. His powerful vocal presentations, which could last up to 10 hours, brought forth a craze for his music all over Europe. Alexandra A. Seno of Asiaweek wrote:
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's voice was otherworldly. For 25 years, his mystical songs transfixed millions. It was not long enough ... He performed qawwali, which means wise or philosophical utterance, as nobody else of his generation did. His vocal range, talent for improvisation and sheer intensity were unsurpassed.
Jeff Buckley cited Khan as a major influence, saying of him "He's my Elvis", and performing the first few minutes of Khan's hit "Yeh Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hai" (including vocals) at live concerts. Many other artists have also cited Khan as an influence, such as Grammy-nominated Pakistani-American Nadia Ali, Zayn Malik, Peter Gabriel, A. R. Rahman, Sheila Chandra, and Alim Qasimov. Author and neuroscientist Sam Harris cited Khan as one of his favourite musicians of all time.
Paul Williams picked a concert performance by Khan for inclusion in his 2000 book The 20th Century's Greatest Hits: a 'top-40' list, in which he devotes a chapter each to what he considers the top 40 artistic achievements of the 20th century in any field (including art, movies, music, fiction, non-fiction, science-fiction). The Derek Trucks Band covers Khan's songs on two of their studio albums. Their 2002 album Joyful Noise includes a cover of "Maki Madni", which features a guest performance by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's nephew. 2005's Songlines includes a medley of two of Khan's songs, "Sahib Teri Bandi" and "Maki Madni". This medley first appeared on the band's live album Live at Georgia Theatre, which was released in 2004.
In 2004, a tribute band called Brooklyn Qawwali Party (formerly Brook's Qawwali Party) was formed in New York City by percussionist Brook Martinez to perform the music of Khan. The 13-piece group still performs mostly instrumental jazz versions of Khan's qawwalis, using the instruments conventionally associated with jazz rather than those associated with qawwali.

In 2007, electronic music producer and performer Gaudi, after being granted access to back catalogue recordings from Rehmat Gramophone House (Khan's former label in Pakistan), released an album of entirely new songs composed around existing vocals. The album, 'Dub Qawwali', was released by Six Degrees Records. It received huge critical acclaim internationally, reaching no. 2 in the iTunes US Chart, no. 4 in the UK and was the no. 1 seller in Amazon.com's Electronic Music section for a period. It also earned Gaudi a nomination for the BBC's World Music Awards 2008.
On 13 October 2015, Google celebrated Khan's 67th birthday with a doodle on its homepage for India, Pakistan, Japan among other countries calling him the person "who opened the world's ears to the rich, hypnotic sounds of the Sufis". “Thanks to his legendary voice, Khan helped bring "world music" to the world," said Google.
In February 2016, a rough mix of song recorded by Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1998 called "Circle of the Noose" was leaked to the internet. Guitarist Dave Navarro described the song saying "It's pop in the sense of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, hook. I really love it and we use a loop of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. It's really nice. The best way I can describe it is it's like pepped- up '60s folk with '90s ideals, but I would hate to label it as folk because it's not, it moves."
