WERE HOME BIG GARDEN UPDATE
The strawberrys are strawbin' off (that's the biggest one in a while)
The pumpkin is doing good but has taken to beginning his declaration of war on the tomato and herb portion of the garden, the strawberries are holding the line, And LOOK! there's a female flower on there! (I'll probably make a post distinguishing the two flower sexes at some point)
The calendula seeds I planted in the garden before I left are doing good, I can now definitively say that they're calendula and not a weed (I may make a blog post talking about calendulas uses)
Salvia and lantana are doing great!
And here's my new Yarrow, already starting to bloom, I've forgotten the name of the variety but from the tag it looked like it'll be my favorite color, red!
Alas the peas are not doing well and I'm not entirely sure why, I think it may be something to do with the heat because if I remember correctly they don't like heat
And here we see a new development which has sprung up, in what I thought was a dead garden box we have thyme! I already have another variety of thyme but hey, I say more the merrier!
My bumblebee tomato is outshining everyone currently having produced two tomatoes, my delicious tomato's which are growing in the pot have made flowers but nothing has pollinated them, I think I'm going to have to go in with an electric toothbrush if this continues
And finally the American black cherry in my yard is producing A once in 5 years super crop, also referred to as a "good crop" (I like super because this thing is crazy) they aren't ripe yet, they turn solid black when they are and I'm worried they'll be at peak ripeness by the time I go on my big trip, which would suck because my friends were planning on coming over and helping me harvest them and make food. Here's to hoping though!
I have reached the limit of pictures I'm allowed to put on this post, just know that the nasturtiums are doing great (I'll make a separate post on them in the near future)

Going from a total harvest of 5 strawberries all of last year to 50 so far this year when I haven’t done a single thing to care for these plants at all really isn’t helping convince me to abandon my lazy gardener ways
#literally just planted them last year and have done Nothing to them since then#left them in in the winter cuz i was too lazy to take them out and left it to them to die or not#they chose to live so now we are getting bonus strawberries despite this really not being a crop i planned for#moss’s garden#the only really labor intensive plants are the tomatoes#theyre all indeterminate and we plant too many which means TONS of pruning#vegetable gardening#gardening#ecdysing

Gardening 101~ Why Trellising Your Tomato Plants is a Must-Do and 5 Tips for Success
“It’s difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato.” ― Lewis Grizzard I admit it… I haven’t always trellised my tomatoes. I’ve always used the standard tomato cage, but trellising is something I recently started doing. Yes, I have always known it is the best way to grow my tomatoes, I just never took the time. Well friends, I am taking the time now as it will…

I just heard a coworker use the phrase "a person of indeterminate gender," and because I have been growing tomatoes I am just picturing somebody whose gender keeps growing like a vine, producing more and more gender throughout the gender growing season, rather than remaining compact like a bush and producing all of their gender in a 1-3 week period.
Meanwhile I was planted in the shade and my attempts to produce gender have been largely unsuccessful.

garden update // september... sePTEMBER?!?! 3rd, 2024
i am legit not ready for it to be september. and i don't mean mentally, i mean in the garden.
a long overdue chore was processing the last of the tomato seeds. the green doctor cherries - my absolute top favorite of all time absolutely - are the only ones left producing. all the other indeterminates have given up. one of the reasons it's my favorite. this will be the last batch i process for seeds, i'll enjoy the rest myself.
i really hope i can look back at this photo one day and go "holy crap, i processed the seeds BY HAND?!"
been so busy doing things other than garden things, like prepping for going back to vend at the market this saturday. like this new nifty sign. gotta sew it onto twine, which means dusting off the sewing machine. which is fine, because i got another sewing project i can't wait to show tumblr.
all the seeds will be done and selling at the market this saturday, but the only transplants that have grown a lot despite the hot weather have been the tom thumb dwarf peas. all the dinosaur kale was eaten - i didn't catch all the cabbageworms the first, or second, or third go around. but i already have a 2nd succession already about to grow their true leaves, so that's something?
speaking of something... i have about 3 of the pomegranate cuttings that have made it through me ignoring them for a whole summer. i REALLY need to get them into soil this week. and this chonker of a cantelope plant bursts forth from the compost that i got from a friends garden and after 3 attempts at killing it, it looks like i'll get even more cantaloupe this year. i didn't want it to cross-pollinate with my dwarf variety of cantaloupe, and pretty sure it didn't since it was never flowering at the same time. since the dwarf variety is done and pulled, i'll see if this gives me anything before first frost.
of course, the cherry bomb tomato seeds i saved last year cross pollinated with the spoon tomatoes so i got all different sizes from all those plants. these were the last of them and i've ripped out the plants already. also i remember planting radishes about 2 months ago.... but i don't remember which kind. so into my tummy they go.
last but not least, parsley checking on the forecast for leaf color changing. such a good boi.

@pdfhoarder tagged me in a little chain questionnaire so I figured I would pass it along! Feel free to ignore if I tagged you, and feel free to join in if I didn't!
Last song you heard?
Slightly All The Time - Soft Machine (1973) Third is one of my favorite albums of all time, soft machine opened my eyes to how sick long jazz instrumentals can be. I've memorized every note but still find myself listening to it whenever I want to vibe out
Favorite color?
Brown, like milk chocolate brown, like tree bark brown, like good soil brown, like leather boots brown, like bronze brown, like a real nice brown brown, like a brown bear brown brown. Followed closely by forest green, which was my original favorite color since I was a kid.
Last book you read?
Epic Tomatoes by Craig LeHoullier, 'The NC Tomato Man' credited with trialing over 1,200 tomato varieties and introducing more than 100 to market.
I bought it a long time at Ed McKay's Used Books and More but now that it's seed starting time I cracked it open to look at more than just the pictures. Not a whole lot of practical growing advice that I hadn't absorbed elsewhere over the last few years, but loads of history on tomato varieties and really beautiful pictures throughout.
Last movie you saw?
Nosferatu, on Boxing Day. I loved the vampire, especially the voice. when it was booming around the castle in his opening scenes it was so menacing, i loved it. people liked to clown on his little outfit and moustache but I loved how it made him look like an actual wallachian noble lost to time. deserves the oscar nods in all the production categories but kinda stupid that they didn't even nominate Eggers for best director. it's obviously his vision that brings everything together since every one of his previous movies has the same dedication and precision. VVitch > Lighthouse > Nosferatu, but that's just because the story is a hundred years old and I know how it ends. they're all fantastic.
Last TV show you watched?
Severance S2E2, it just came out this morning! Love it, my favorite tv series since all the 'prestige television' shows ended, waiting all these years for it to come back was agonizing but it's finally here and hasn't dropped in quality so far, so I'm still super excited every week. Sweet, savory, or spicy?
I love sweet pastries more than any other food genre in the world. Savory is a close second place, and my stomach doesn't always agree with the amount of sweet foods I'm eating, but where would I be without sweetness?
Last Google search?
"nvidia shield losing hdmi connection" from trying to watch the new episode of severance 🙃
Current obsession?
my little orange cat sleeping on my chest and my little brown cat who was sleeping on my legs
What are you looking forward to?
the growing season to start already! the last few years haven't been nearly as cold and dead as this year, i'm really itching to get back out there. I have lots of woodchip shoveling for the path to do and I need another 12 yards of compost for the other half of the raised beds that needs shoveling as well, but it's far too cold to bother with any of that yet. I'm going to be much more restrained and planned this year, limiting the number of indeterminate tomatoes and vining crops I have so that I don't have so much to clean up constantly. I'm also going to be managing lots of rosebushes and citrus and cut flowers and other plants that I've never really interacted with before! the vegetables will be regimented and standardized, but my experimental crops are going to be full of new challenges to deal with. one or two full 30'x4' beds are going to be potatoes, dry beans, onions, or other easily managed high calorie storage crops. the last two years have been mostly using garden vegetables as a treat in between grocery trips, but the closer I can get to using the grocery store as a trip while relying on my garden vegetables the better. I hope everyone else is as excited for the growing season as I am! Tagging...

Good LORD I am a sucker for unusual or decorative canning jars, and I found these at half price at Southern States this morning. Canning jars in general SEEM pricey, but that cost is offset by the fact that they are good for decades of regular use. I do not *need* any more jars for jam/preserves. but. I wanted these. And my aunt enabled me (by agreeing that they were hella cute.)
I also found a needed thing; spice packets for
salsa and chili. It is possible to make those from scratch, but the packets are nice and I'm consistently happy with the results. I had never found the salsa mix in bulk before, only single packets, so that was a good thing. In a good tomato year I make 12-18 quarts of sauce, 20 pints of salsa, and an indeterminate number of jars of chili base and regular canned tomatoes.
Let the games commence!

What Waits Off the Coast of Santa Barbara
Chapter 5: Give and Take, Ask and Answer
Notes: so uhm- eheheh, funny story…
I have added an indeterminable amount of new chapters — chapters I don’t know the amount of because I haven’t even drafted them :’) but if I had to guess, it’d be around upwards of ten extra chapters
*screaming and crying* SOMEBODY FUCKING SEDATE ME-
Sorry for the super late update
—————
The car ride was silent. A bit awkward, if Shawn was being honest. He fiddled with the uncomfortable seat belt, then his hands, trying to ignore the side-eyes ‘Carlton Lassiter’ was giving him. He wasn’t sure what his deal was with him. Then again, he’d also be suspicious if he was with a weird guy that was previously a weird mermaid. Even so, there was quite a few quick glances.
Shawn hated silence. Even the ocean had the odd whale call every now and then. And besides, sound traveled a lot better through water than it did on land. Without the constant pressure of sea water pushing on his ears, everything felt so much more quiet. All that he could hear right now was the rumble of the car engine and wind whistling outside.
He’d be filling the empty void right now with flirting and witty banter (all of it aimed at the man behind the steering wheel, of course). But he was still working on getting his mouth and tongue to cooperate with him. He’d barely been able to say his name earlier, and the other quips he’d made before that had been just as much a struggle.
He reached out to fiddle with the radio fixed to the dash, the tarp wrapped around him making a swishing sound as he did so. Someone had to substitute the silence for noise, and if Shawn couldn’t fill it with speaking he might as well have something else do it for him.
“-I wanna see you out that door, baby bye bye bye (bye bye!)”
Not even two seconds had passed and it was immediately shut off once more by Carlton. His hand was a blur as it reached towards the dash and pressed the power button.
Silence reigned once more.
Shawn hummed a tune under his breath, parts of a whale song he’d heard a few days ago broken with the odd line from the chorus of ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ by Tears for Fears. It mixed horribly, but the only one that was there to judge his humming skills were him and Carlton.
Fingers drummed against his thighs in tempo, plastic fabric rustling with every tap, head nodding along subconsciously.
The air was tense, despite Shawn’s best efforts.
Until Carlton cleared his throat. “So… you uh- you’re…”
“Real?” Shawn finished for him. He mentally patted himself on the back for not fucking up the pronunciation. Even though it was fairly simple. Still, small victories and all that.
“No- I mean… you’re sitting in my car, I think that’s enough evidence that you’re real.” He took a deep breath. “I was going to say that- that you’re a siren.”
Hold up, what? This guy thought he was a siren? He had to be joking, pulling his leg. But no, his face, whilst still staring at the road, was dead serious.
Shawn couldn’t help laughing, a sound that was a mix of human laughter along with dolphin chirps and whistles. “Siren? You- thought- those ugly half-vulture ladies? Hell no!”
Saying it out loud made him laugh harder. At least that was one thing he could still do without struggle. Simply speaking that broken sentence was a battle. But it was one that was slowly getting more and more easy to overcome.
The car slowed down as they came to a red-light, albeit a bit jerkily. Shawn barely noticed, too busy laughing his ass off, cheeks growing hot. Of all the things he could’ve been called, ‘siren’ wasn’t on the list of things he’d thought of.
“It’s a valid conclusion, alright?” Carlton’s face went bright red in embarrassment. It was cute, Shawn found, the way his lips pursed as he practically became a tomato.
He continued, and asked interrogatively, “How else did you make me help you?”
Shawn’s laughs died down to a couple giggles. “Make you… what?”
What did that mean? Then Shawn realized that Carlton thought he’d done some kind of voodoo seduction spell and forced him to help get out of the net.
He let out an involuntary snort, and giggled more. “I can’t do that. That’d be really cool though.”
But the sight of Carlton’s still serious expression made him come to a full stop. He wasn’t kidding. Oh man, he didn’t really think that, did he? That Shawn could just full-on take over someone and make them do his bidding? That that was why Carlton had helped him in the first place?
Yeah, getting people to do stuff you wanted them to do could be cool. In theory. But… just the thought of it didn’t really sit right with him. Full control? Probably a little invasive. Definitely a little invasive.
The light turned green again, and Carlton pressed the gas pedal a little too aggressively. The engine revved as they shot past the traffic light. There wasn’t really anyone around to notice, however. Except for a lone car sitting at the exit of a small parking lot, waiting for the Crown Vic to drive past so it could pull out.
“Dude, even if I was a siren, I couldn’t make you do anything. They just… sing about what you want most. Draw you towards them, that stuff.”
Shawn remembered his first — and last — encounter with the nasty creatures. He was grateful he’d paid some attention to the Greek mythology section of eighth grade history. Otherwise he’d have seen that rocky island full of bird women and not thought twice about swimming over and investigating. Of course, he knew what was up the moment he saw the big vultures with human heads surrounded by torn clothing and shredded steel beams.
Eyes never leaving the road, Carlton drummed his fingers against the wheel. “So, you’re not… in my head? You’re not influencing my judgment?”
“Nope. Not a little bit.”
He nodded, donning a thoughtful expression.
And then it was quiet.
Two minutes passed before Shawn became antsy.
What to do, what to do, what to do…
He thought back to when Carlton had opened up his glove compartment earlier to grab the bottle of ibuprofen. Along with the medicine, he’d seen the standard car manual, with a gun sitting comfortably on top.
Shawn took another quick scan of the car and found a radio in the cup-holder. A closer look at the man behind the wheel told him there was a badge and a pair of handcuffs stuffed in his pockets.
It was easy enough to piece together that this guy worked with the police. Child’s play, really. He was probably a detective, the setup reminding Shawn of when his own father had made the transition from officer to detective.
“It’s been a while, but I’m pretty sure that even if you’re a detective it’s still illegal to drive when you’re drunk.”
The last part was also easy to deduce, the faint scent of alcohol permeating Carlton’s breath. Faint, most likely faded enough to leave him sober. But still there.
A beat passed.
“What gave it away?”
“Well, the radio was a big hint.” He gestured to the aforementioned object still sitting in the cupholder. “Handcuffs sticking out of the back pocket were a dead give away. But I almost missed it. That ass is so distracting. And third: your badge? There’s a perfect outline of it in your other pocket.”
Shawn could see the look of impression that Carlton was trying to tamp down. “How did you figure I’m a detective, not just a cop?”
“Let’s just say I… knew someone. Yeah.” He wasn’t ready to really open up about his dad. Not yet. Not to a stranger. Maybe Gus, when he saw him. Besides, he’d rather not have someone who most likely knew Henry professionally be privy to the fact that Shawn was his son. “The setup was a lot like yours.”
It was quiet again, save for the humming engine and the small taps Shawn’s fingernails made against the hard plastic door handle.
Carlton flicked on his turn signal, pulling into the left turn lane. “What’s with the… just a while ago, on the beach, why were you so…”
So big. The unspoken words reverberated through the car.
Truth be told, Shawn never really wondered why his human form and his mer form had such a large difference in size. Evolution, maybe? The ‘why’ never bothered him, just grateful for the advantage over all other ocean life. Nothing bothered him when he was that size.
The only thing bigger than Shawn were whales, who simply allowed him to travel alongside as he pleased, not sensing any danger from him.
“Not sure. But it’s useful. Easy to hunt, get food.” Shawn stated matter-of-factly.
Again, Carlton nodded in agreement. “I would assume so.”
Buildings flew by as the car trundled on. The sky had significantly lightened up by now, a small sliver of the sun peeking over the horizon. Outside, Shawn could hear seagulls cawing and birds chirping. It had been a while since he’d heard those.
“How long?”
This time, it was Shawn’s turn to look confused. He turned away from the window to look at Carlton, who still had not taken his eyes away from the road. “What?”
“How long were you underwater, away from land?”
Shawn’s mouth opened and closed, not unlike a fish out of water (which was technically what he was).
Noticing his silence, he began to elaborate. “The way you talk, like you used to but haven’t in a long time. That’s how I know.” Carlton pulled onto a smaller road, houses lining both sides of the street. “You figured out I’m a detective, I’m a little surprised you thought I was incompetent. There’s a reason I have this job, and it’s not because I sat on my ass and asked for it.”
Shawn sighed. He was right about that. Still, it was kind of embarrassing to have it pointed out to him. “What year is it?”
“2006.”
“About a decade, then. Give or take a few months.” An idea struck Shawn. “Speaking of which, what’d I miss while I was gone? Did they renew the Breakfast Club? Any new movies with Val Kilmer? Any world changing events like that?”
Shawn hadn’t expected the flurry of emotions coming from Carlton. When he did speak, his voice was just barely raised a pitch. “Uhm, well, there sure were- but that’s a conversation for later.”
It was perfect timing. Carlton pulled the Crown Vic in the driveway of an immaculate house. The lawn was neatly trimmed, the home a clean shade of green and void of any dirt or grime. If Shawn didn’t know any better, he would’ve assumed whoever lived there was someone who was boring and worked a nine to five office job.
But a quick glance inside told him the opposite, as Shawn exited the car, tarp still swishing around him. Sharper than average eyes let him see that there was some kind of corkboard with mugshots pinned in some kind of order, with what were most likely descriptions of the people printed underneath.
Lassiter dug through his pockets and fished out a set of keys, unlocking the door. “Go on ahead to the bathroom, it’s down the hall second door on the left. I need to find the first aid kit.”
Inside, Shawn got a better look at the board he’d seen from outside. Now that he was closer, he could actually read the descriptions. It was a wall full of convicted criminals, each one more rough than the last. Save for the one in the top left corner, who appeared to be a dapper gentleman.
He walked down the hallway, and noticed a room, door wide open so there was no need to do it himself, right across from where he’d been instructed the bathroom was. A desk sat beside the bed, covered in papers and a singular empty file.
Shawn knew he didn’t have time to really examine them, so from the door he quickly scanned the closest papers to the best of his ability.
Something something dead astronomer something planetarium…
“Wow, he really puts the ‘home’ in homework.” Shawn muttered under his breath before retreating into the bathroom where he’d been told to go.

Dinner Recipe: Chickpea Curry
TIME: ★★★✰
PRICE: ★★★✰
EASE: ★★✰✰
CLEANUP: ★★★✰
This was a bit of an experimental recipe on my part, as a means of figuring out wtf to do with all these chickpeas I cooked up.
This recipe is a bit more involved, and depends a lot on personal tastes so I gave it a medium score for ease.
Overall this recipe took about 30 minutes once the chickpeas were cooked. You could easily use canned.
Long recipe, so feel free to read below!
Ingredients: 1. 2 cups Cooked Chickpeas 2. 1/2 onion (I use my onions interchangeably like a heathen.) 3. 1 TB minced garlic 4. 1 TB minced ginger 5. Veg of preference (I used carrots, jalapeno, and a wilty tomato because we had some I needed to get through! I think frozen peas would be great in this. Potatoes would be good, but that texture is present in the chickpeas and I don't know how they'd cook with this recipe) 6. 1 can of coconut milk 7. 2 TB chopped Cilantro (could probably leave this out if you don't like it.) 8. 1 lime's worth of juice 9. 1/4th cup Maple syrup 10. A curry brick, like this one below! I know it's a "cheat," but they're SO easy and quick to use! HIGHLY recommend grabbing them if you have a store that carries them. Looks like you can get them from Amazon! It comes with 8 bricks, each brick making a whole pan of curry, so it'll last awhile! (Note: the curry bricks are NOT gluten-free. You could replace this with a heavy amount of curry seasonings, but I have yet to perfect my ratio, so it may take experimenting! Here is a list I found of alternate curry spice blends.)
-Heat a large pan with oil. Once it gets hot, add your onion. Stir for about 2 minutes, then add your garlic and ginger. Cook for another 30 seconds. -Add your veg and mix everything all together. Cook for another 2 minutes or so. -Add your chickpeas! Salt and pepper em! Squeeze in some lime juice! -Cook it all for about 3-5 mins, then dump your can of coconut milk in. Once the coconut milk heats up a bit, add your curry brick. Mix the brick in until it dissolves into the pan and mixes with the milk. -Let it simmer and thicken. That process should only take about another 5 minutes, but keep an eye on it and turn off the heat when it feels ready. It should look something like this.
-Toss in your cilantro and maple syrup! Mix it thoroughly!
Serve this over rice!
It's pretty tasty and filling. You can add more spices if you want. Tons of room for modifying it. I topped mine with shredded coconut.
This made a ton, especially when paired with rice. This will likely give me lunches for the whole week. Supposedly curry freezes well, so you could stash this away for leftovers at an indeterminate date! Try to finish frozen leftovers within about 3 months!
It also looks cute as hell in the take-out tuppaware I hoard.

Strung out on a Thursday afternoon
Finally got something to tie my indeterminate tomatoes on, now they hopefully won't fall over, it also makes it a lot easier to prune because now the tomato is being held in the air rather than just standing there, look! You can already see a flower!
If anyone has any questions about indeterminate tomato care, or wants to know what varieties I'm growing, hit me up! I love sharing knowledge with people!

How to Prune Tomatoes Over the course of the growing season, your tomato plants can become unruly, leading to less fruitful yields. Pruning your tomatoes is a simple yet effective way to encourage healthy growth while maximizing your harvest. In this guide, you'll learn helpful tips and techniques to prune your tomato plants, ensuring they thrive in your garden. Grab your gardening shears, and let's get started on giving your tomatoes the care they deserve!Understanding the Basics of Tomato Pruning A good understanding of tomato pruning is necessary for maximizing your plant's growth and fruit production. By selectively removing certain parts of your tomato plants, you can encourage healthier growth, reduce disease risk, and improve airflow. This knowledge will empower you to make informed decisions about how and when to prune, ensuring your tomatoes thrive throughout the growing season. Importance of Pruning While it may seem unnecessary, pruning your tomato plants can significantly enhance their growth and vigor. By removing excess foliage, you promote better sunlight exposure and airflow, which helps reduce fungal diseases and pests. Additionally, pruning encourages stronger roots and healthier fruit development, leading to a more bountiful harvest. Types of Tomato Plants Understanding the types of tomato plants is key to effective pruning. The two main categories of tomato plants are determinate and indeterminate. Determinate varieties grow to a specific height and produce all their fruit at once, while indeterminate varieties continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season. Type Characteristics Determinate Fixed height, fruits ripen earlier Indeterminate Continuous growth, prolonged harvest Vining Requires support, strong vertical growth Bush Compact, needs less staking Cherry Small, sweet, great for snacking After identifying the type of tomato you are growing, you can tailor your pruning strategy accordingly. Each type may require different pruning techniques to optimize growth and yield, adapting your approach based on your variety's growth habit and overall characteristics. You need to know your tomato's growth style. Determinate plants are pruned differently than indeterminate. Cherry tomatoes often require less pruning. Regularly assess your plants to determine pruning needs. After identifying your tomato type, adjust your care practices accordingly. Essential Tools for Pruning While pruning tomatoes might seem straightforward, having the right tools can make the process much smoother and more efficient. You'll want to keep your gardening tools organized and ready, as having the necessarys at hand will help you focus on making those perfect cuts for healthier plants. Essential tools include pruning shears, gloves, and even a small bucket to collect clippings. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your pruning session is productive and enjoyable. Choosing the Right Tools Now, when it comes to selecting your pruning shears, look for a high-quality pair that feels comfortable in your hand. Opt for sharp, clean blades that will make clean cuts without tearing the stems, as this helps promote healing for your tomato plants. Remember to check for durability and ease of use, as investing in the right tools can save you time and effort. Safety Tips for Pruning Clearly, keeping safety in mind during pruning is important to keep you and your plants in top shape. Here are some necessary safety tips: Wear protective gloves to shield your hands from thorns and sharp edges.Use sharp tools to minimize damage to your plants and avoid slipping.Be cautious where you place your hands while cutting to prevent accidents. The more prepared you are, the safer your pruning experience will be! Plus, being attentive to your surroundings while pruning is a good idea. Here are some additional safety practices to consider: Keep your workspace tidy to prevent tripping hazards.Ensure your tools are appropriately stored when not in use.
Stay hydrated and take breaks if the weather is hot. The more you prioritize safety, the more enjoyable and effective your pruning sessions will become! When to Prune Your Tomatoes You want to ensure your tomato plants thrive, so knowing when to prune is vital for optimal growth. Ideally, you should prune your tomatoes during the growing season, specifically when they reach about 12 to 18 inches tall. This helps to promote airflow and encourages stronger growth, benefiting your overall yield. Ideal Timing Clearly, the best time to prune your tomatoes is during the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler. This will help minimize stress on the plants and reduce the likelihood of disease. Pruning should be done every few weeks, allowing you to closely monitor their growth and health. Signs Your Tomatoes Need Pruning Any sign of overcrowding, yellowing leaves, or excessive suckers can indicate that your tomatoes are in need of pruning. By keeping an eye on your plants, you can help ensure they remain healthy and productive all season long. Another indication that your tomatoes might need some attention is when the leaves begin to touch the ground or become too dense. Low-hanging leaves can hinder airflow and promote fungal diseases. By regularly checking your plants, you'll be able to nip any potential issues in the bud, ensuring your tomatoes grow strong and fruitful. How to Prune: Step-by-Step Guide After you gather your tools and understand the basics, you can follow this structured approach to prune your tomatoes effectively: Step Action 1 Identify suckers below the first flower cluster. 2 Use sterilized pruners to snip off the suckers. 3 Remove any yellowing or dead leaves. 4 Thin out crowded branches for better air circulation. Initial Pruning Now that you know the basics, the initial pruning is all about establishing a strong foundation for your plants. Start when your tomato plants reach about 12 inches in height. Focus on removing suckers that grow in the leaf axils to encourage upward growth and better fruit production. Ongoing Maintenance Pruning For the best results throughout the growing season, ongoing maintenance pruning is important. You should aim to prune every few weeks, ensuring your plants remain healthy and well-structured. Plus, as your plants grow, regularly check for unwanted side shoots and remove any unproductive or damaged leaves. This proactive approach not only shapes your plants for better sun exposure but also reduces disease risk and enhances airflow. By maintaining a routine, you will make a significant difference in the vigor and productivity of your tomato plants!Tips for Effective Pruning Your tomato plants will thrive when you prune them effectively. Here are some tips to keep in mind: Use sharp, clean tools to avoid infections. Prune in the early morning when the plants are less stressed. Remove suckers before they get too large. Focus on improving air circulation and sunlight exposure. Regularly check your plants for new growth that needs managing. The right techniques can help maximize your yield. Common Mistakes to Avoid Clearly, pruning can be a bit daunting, leading many to make common mistakes. Avoid cutting too much foliage, as this can stress your plants and reduce their ability to photosynthesize. Additionally, don't prune too late in the season, which can inhibit fruit development. Instead, keep your timing and pruning practices in check for healthier plants. Best Practices for Healthy Growth Common practices for ensuring healthy tomato growth include consistent watering, mulching around the base, and proper fertilization. Caring for your plants with these practices supports the benefits of pruning, allowing them to produce a bountiful harvest. Regularly monitoring their growth and adjusting your care routines can keep your tomatoes flourishing throughout the season.
With attention to detail and a little effort, you can create the optimal environment for your tomatoes to thrive. Make sure your plants receive adequate nutrients while staying well-hydrated, as these factors play a vital role in their overall health. Combine these practices with effective pruning, and you'll be well on your way to enjoying a fruitful harvest. Factors to Consider for Successful Pruning Keep in mind that successful pruning goes beyond just snipping branches. Here are some factors to consider: Time of year Your specific tomato variety Plant growth patterns Overall plant health Presence of pests or diseases Assume that understanding these aspects will set you up for a healthy, productive tomato harvest. Plant Health Little attention to your plant's health can go a long way in ensuring successful pruning. Before making any cuts, assess your tomatoes for signs of stress, such as yellowing leaves or wilting. Healthy plants can better recover from pruning and yield abundant fruit. Weather and Soil Conditions If you want to optimize your pruning efforts, pay close attention to weather and soil conditions. Ensuring your plants have ideal growing conditions will enhance recovery and fruit production after pruning. To maximize the benefits of pruning, conduct your task on a dry day when the soil is not overly saturated. This will help your plants heal faster and prevent disease. Additionally, understanding your local climate can guide you on when to prune, ensuring that your tomatoes can thrive in the conditions available to them.To wrap up Presently, pruning your tomato plants can significantly enhance their growth and yield. By keeping an eye on suckers and removing lower leaves, you promote better airflow and sunlight exposure. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty; pruning can be a satisfying way to engage with your garden. Regularly checking your plants will help you adapt your approach as they grow. You guys don’t understand. I am in the trenches fighting every single day with the wildly overgrown patch of indeterminate volunteer cherry tomatoes that have taken over like 20 square feet of my garden. No photograph I could take could adequately convey the difficulty of manuevering through straight up impassible jungle. And now I have like eight more cups of cherry tomatoes to preserve. Every day is a war
#god said no more beautiful heirloom slicers but you can have untold hundreds of the most labor intensive and least toast conducive#to be clear…#this is a good problem to have
