Also for what it's worth I've never discouraged the creation of a farther left party in the US either. I believe I've even said in the past that the Green Party is a disaster and if you want to build an alternative party you have to do it from the ground up. I have no illusions about a farther left party gaining any kind of traction at the national level, but local politics is a lot more flexible.

The only viable role for a leftist party in the US right now is a local/state party in deep blue states that would have candidates run as Democrats if they ran for federal office. Democrats will have different opinions on that which is fine, personally I'm chill with that as long as they treat Democrats as respected coalition partners and aren't assholes about it. I think that's kind of what the DSA was supposed to be? It feels like every attempt at this dissolves into an internal mess because *jazz hands* the American left but it doesn't have to be that way.

I'm not going to personally put the effort in to do this, I'm fine voting for Democrats, but if I had a choice between a Democrat and some leftist party for a local office I'd consider both candidates. That's basically what I do now anyway except they're all officially Democrats and I do it in the primaries.

#bernie sanders was like a socialist mayor #i forget what his affiliation was when he was in the house but obviously he caucused with dems like he does now #and then he did the whole independent thing #which tbh i wonder if that actually helps him pick up voters from the right too (vermont has a republican governor lmao)#(welcome to new england weirdos)#i haven't looked at his numbers in vermont so idk #bernie was kind of an asshole about it running for president as a democrat twice and going back to independent after #and also making sure there isn't a democrat nominated against him for the senate #i'm like.... mildly annoyed about it but i have bigger fish to fry #but like angus king is an independent who caucuses with dems and is not an asshole about it #he's more centrist because that's his electorate but you could do THAT as a progressive #there are options and they all start with caring about local politics

Listen the Puritans sucked in plenty of ways but the weirdly common view expressed on this site that everything wrong with USAmerican culture can be traced back to puritans/“puritanism” (vaguely and often ahistorically defined) is, forgive me, infuriatingly fucking simplistic. Like frankly if anything you are buying into the USA’s own national mythologizing re: the Puritans WAY too hard

Although I’m excited for the country-exclusive cultural events on the qsmp, I’m also hoping for more international holiday events where everyone gets to show the unique way their culture celebrates the holiday
