As a plus size poc reader/writer it’s so easy to say felt flush or felt hot instead of red face. I will write that someone picked me up if they have super human strength because duh…but other than that it’s so easy to be inclusive. I will sometimes write played with hair at nape of neck and I have to be more mindful of that.

What positive or negative stereotypes have you encountered in fiction? - Writing stories✍🏾✍🏻 ✍🏿that engage in inclusive and diverse representation doesn't have to be terrifying, ignored, or executed poorly. These are just a few examples on how we as writers can work to reshape the way we try to capture and share the intricate lives of our fellow humans. - Beyond the examples and suggestions in this post, I recommend reading beyond fiction, beyond only stereotypes, and even beyond your own writing. Take time⏲️ to engage in the conversations happening around you, from essays and books to roundtable discussions and workshops. There are numerous opportunities for us to learn and grow as writers and people. - So, to get you started on your research journey📚💻 I'll give you a couple of links: Check out NPR's Code Switch podcast or article "'Strong' Black Woman? 'Smart' Asian Man? The Downside To Positive Stereotypes" to learn a little more about positive stereotypes. Check out Sophie Austin's post, "Writing Inclusive Fiction: Cultural Representation without Cultural Appropriation" to get some varied perspectives and links on writing inclusively. - #stereotypes #breakingstereotypes #genderstereotypes #breakstereotypes #stopstereotypes #challengingstereotypes #endnegativeblackstereotypes #breakinggenderstereotypes #blackstereotypes #asianstereotypes #discrimination #notodiscrimination #genderdiscrimination #racialdiscrimination #disabilitydiscrimination #inclusive #inclusivecommunity #inclusivefiction #inclusivewriting #representationmatters #representation #asianrepresentation #lgbtrepresentation #blackrepresentation #negativestereotypes #positivestereotypes #disabilityrepresentation #writingcommunity #writing #writingresearch https://www.instagram.com/p/CSCpx_Gr9Ap/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Shadow In My Mirror
TW:////// Blood, Death, Weapons, Fighting
I ran
I ran faster than I ever could run before because I needed to face my greatest fear, I left my home that night, leaving behind everyone I cared about. The flashes of lightning and thunderclaps were no longer frightening to me. I continued on as I passed by buildings where I could see my reflection through the glass doors and windows. I kept going. It didn't matter that I was completely soaked because I knew my end would come sooner rather than later. It was unavoidable that I would have to carry on with my destiny. I had gone against everything everyone told me to do. I needed to take care of my situation. "Is this what you wanted?!" I yelled as I approached the known location. I then burst into tears, reeling the darkness that lay ahead. I didn't want anyone around me to be hurt, and I wasn't going to let this person take someone important in my life because they were after me. "I am here!" I yelled once more angrily as I walked the familiar path I had taken before. I kicked a scrap of trash in my way. "What a surprise, I thought you'd be too much of a coward," said the darkness. "I never would back down, you should know by now," we started circling each other, it infuriated me. Seeing the individual before me, I noticed that every movement I made, they made the opposite. I wanted to get to the point where my adrenaline was kicking in. "Come on, attack me!" They lunged after me as I took a step forward. We both fell to the ground, and I tried getting them off me. I started punching their sides with my left and right hands, and they put their hands on my neck, trying to choke me out. I rolled both of us over while using a form I had the back of my forearms to separate them from my neck. As I tried to hit them again, they reached for something. I quickly moved my arms to protect my face, rolling completely to my left side. We took our stance with our fist in front of us, and they began to tease me, "Come on, I'll let you get the first hit, come on hit me," I quickly turned around with my supporting foot and extended my other leg to hit them square in the chest, and they stumbled back. They kicked my side. I tried to block it and was punched in the stomach. In pain, I groaned and connected my fist to their jaw, which enraged them and caused them to hit me with the same force I had. I spit out what had been formulated in my mouth. I was suddenly kicked in the stomach, knocking the wind out of me. I was on the wet ground, and they had a fist full of my hair saying, "You thought it was going to get easy getting rid of me!" They let go of me and laughed in my face, "I'll get rid of you!" I cough as I try to get back up. In a snarky sarcastic manner, they respond, "Sure you can." I then was kicked once more. I scream and groan. Getting my breath back their voice echoed, "Nobody is coming to your rescue!!" Is a sentence I've heard all my life, "Might as well die here." I knew they had weapons on them I knew them all my life their fascination was with daggers, they took off their jacket and from behind them obtained their weapon. I knew I had a pocket pistol located in my pant pocket. I stand wiping away the blood, and they wave the dagger around. It was clear that neither of us was going to fight fair. We were the same …
"I'm done fighting!" I was backed to a flat surface so I spat at them, "Fuck you." Coming toward me they held me against the wall choking me, I couldn't breathe I didn't know what I would focus on, removing their hands away from me or shooting, I didn't know what I was able to do more quickly. "Dumb fucking mistake," they growled and the dagger impaled me in my chest, I gasped I had a hold of the pocket pistol I aimed and pulled the trigger, the bullet striking their head. I screamed, shaking, and had no idea what to do. Their body hit the ground, I wasn't sure what I needed to do. I wanted the impaled dagger out of me, but I didn't I held around the wound trying not to move I sink to the ground my body resting against a flat vertical surface.
All stared at the limp body before me. They were me and I was them. I saw myself dead before my eyes. There was one certain thing: if individuals distinguished me, they would know why I did it. It would be impossible to fight them if I had the ones I cared about with me; they would be befuddled, terrified, and hopeless.
I hear my name being faintly uttered. I couldn't speak loudly, my vision was going in and out. I was afraid of the person who found me. I felt my hair be moved out of my face. I could feel their hands they felt comforting and warm which were familiar. My head then moved from side to side I mumbled. I then recognized the voice that was talking to me it was my love the one person that would always be there for me. My love had to see me like this. The only word I recall was "Stay" I soon felt lifted the rain droplets hitting half of my face. I never wanted my significant other to see me like this all defeated weak. I felt sorry for my love I hated the thought of them losing me and how they must have been feeling. I hope they'll understand why I did it. My thoughts began to rush through me and hoped that everyone remembered me well. I wanted to talk but my speech was slurred, I was trying to apologize I tried saying "Sorry," but my partner didn't want me to lose hope they wanted me to stay with them and hoped everything would be fine
Soon enough the darkness engulfed me …
