Affirmation 3/5
Missing Scenes Sein Und Zeit Scully POV
Part  one Orison here
Part two Per Manum here
Three
I can remember, many years ago when I was just a small child, my Father taking my hand and hunkering down on his haunches so as to be eye level with me. Â His habitually stern countenance was softened by a sorrow that emanated from him that I didnât really understand at the time. Â I had run to him crying; the sound of Billâs mocking laughter ringing in my ears and sending the blood rushing to my face as I stumbled away from him and the group of boys who were willing conspirators in the reason for my humiliation.
I had dared to invade their pre-pubescent world you see, a tree house that really was nothing more than a few wide boards nailed flat to the boughs of the ancient oak that stood proud on the very edge of our property â and our house being the only one on the block with a tree that large, the vote had been cast that it should become the seat of their empire for the summer.
Girls of course, were strictly forbidden and I had been chased off more times than I cared to remember; but back then, with the finely honed - if at times misguided - tenacity of an eight year old girl I had waged a daily battle to be included; to be accepted in their adventurous clique and be given access to that erstwhile âtree houseâ.
The only way up was by means of a thick rope procured from my father â the strong multi-spliced length knotted tightly to a thick branch just a few inches from where the boards began and which fell straight and true to the ground below. Â I had watched Bill swarm up that rope countless times over the weeks past and it seemed easy enough â hand over hand on the rope, legs braced against the tree as he walked himself up the trunk, swinging his body slightly to the side when he reached the platform so as to angle himself enough to place his feet on the wooden boards below.
And on this particular day I had begged, without much hope I have to admit, to try it just once, a wide smile of gratitude almost splitting my face when, after a whispered conversation with one of his cohorts, Bill actually waved amenably at the rope and told me to go right ahead.
I made it to about halfway up when my small hands began to cramp on the rope, fingers momentarily losing their grip as I slid back down a few inches. Â It was enough to destabilise me and I suddenly found myself hanging in mid air, legs kicking helplessly as I tried to re-brace myself against the tree. And the more I tried, the more the rope swayed and the more futile it became. Â Without the trunk to carry some of my weight my arms rapidly tired as I desperately tried to hold on. Â The fall to the ground was probably around ten feet or so, but to me it may as well have been miles. Â I wanted to let go even so, the sound of laughter below me sending tears rushing to my eyes as I willed myself to just let go, to fall gracefully to land on my feet and prove to the assembled boys below that I was so much more than they thought me to be. But I just couldnât. Â Frozen with fear, the rope beginning to burn the delicate skin of my palm I instead began screaming for Bill to help me, to please help me get down, squeezed my eyes shut as the rope began to spin; my brother quickly and confidently took a standing jump to grasp the rope just below where my sneakered feet hung limply. He grabbed hold of them, pulling me down to him roughly; the rope leaving burns on my palms even though I tried to keep up with his pace. Â I felt more confident now though he was there to catch me if I fell and in seconds I was on the ground again, falling squarely on my ass as soon as I felt the dusty grass beneath my feet.
Billâs face looking down at me in vague disgust as snot and tears smeared my face before that mocking smile appeared that I knew so well.
âYouâre such a girl Dana.â
And it had been enough to send me scrambling to my feet, dignity in tatters as I ran from their laughter and straight in to my Fatherâs arms, gasping out the reasons for my distress as he gently rubbed my back and held me against him.
âI HATE him Daddy I HATE him so much.â
He had knelt down before me then and spoke words that I had barely remembered until tonight when I had, at Mulders request, performed the autopsy on his Mother. Â But as I was preparing to make the first incision, those words had suddenly invaded my consciousness, the sound of his voice inside my head just as clear as though he were right next to me speaking aloud.
âHate is too strong to carry around with us Starbuck. Â Itâs equalled only by love and you will learn that both are present for all of our lives and both will prove to be as hard to bear in their own way.â
And I understood. Â For the first time I think I truly understood.
Because as clinically detached as I tried to be, as I was incising and measuring, weighing and cataloguing, the hatred for this woman burned so deeply inside of me I donât know how I was able to bear it without raising my scalpel and slashing at her until there was nothing left but bloody tissue to remind me of all she had done to her son â a man who despite everything, still maintained a love for her she hadnât ever really deserved. Â Even when I discovered the grim diagnosis so recently bestowed upon her with regards to her health I was unable to muster up even an iota of sympathy for her.
I hid it from Mulder of course; and really, as I watched him later begin to disintegrate in front of me, my hatred for her was replaced with a protective love for him that was so intense it blotted everything else out and became about him; only about him.
I have seen him cry before, there have been times when I have held him limp in my arms as his body shook with evidence of his quiet release, of trusting me enough to let go of whatever was insidiously eating him away inside, of allowing him to purge himself of his demons; and each and every time I have welcomed it; touched beyond measure that he has trusted me enough to lay himself bare in a way he habitually denied himself for so long before we appeared in each otherâs lives. Â And while it has always been difficult for me at times, to not share his pain, to not welcome it to live inside me, has never been an option.
But tonight is different somehow, because as I pulled him against me and forced him to acknowledge that I was here with him, that he didnât have to hide anything from me, I sensed that really, he wasnât there with me at all. Â Locked inside his own desperate misery, his sense of failure and guilt, he quickly disentangled himself from me, unable to meet my eyes as he requested that I should go; that he needed to be alone; effectively smashing to pieces all that we had achieved over the last few months.
I wanted to argue, wanted to refuse to leave; to beg him if necessary to allow me to stay to take care of him. Â But even as the words were forming on my lips, he shook his head sharply at me, silently asking me to please just do as he asked before turning on his heel, walking away from me without a backward glance, in to the bedroom and then the bathroom, slamming the door behind him in much the same way as he had emotionally just slammed it in my face.
Because I love him I left, blinking back my own tears as I negotiated the rain slick streets that would lead me home.
And because I love him, when I was barely halfway there I slammed the car to a halt before executing a one-eighty degree turn and headed straight back to him.
Because I will not walk away from him anymore, knowing that regardless of how he tries to push me away we have come too far now to take the easy option with each other; a realisation that we have to stop hiding from each other when things get bad.
I arrived back at his apartment and when my knock went unanswered, I used the key given to me so many years ago to let myself in. Â To my surprise the shower was still running and that, combined with the silence that otherwise surrounded me, inexplicably caused the hairs to stand up at the back of my neck and I suddenly was scared, more afraid than I have ever been in my life in fact. Â Because I shouldnât have left him regardless of how much he wanted me to, I should have planted myself firmly in this room and refused to move a fucking inch. Â Even if he had locked himself away from me in every way possible, I should have stayed. And I didnât â I instead allowed him to send me away to battle this thing alone when really, I should have known that his reserves were so depleted at that point that he had nothing left inside him to battle with.
Iâm not sure what I expected to find when I pushed open the door to the bathroom, tentatively stepping inside, subconsciously bracing myself for what I might see.
Because I discovered a very long time ago that Mulder places very little value on his own life; watched him so effortlessly and without hesitation as he sat before Modell in that stark white hospital room, press the cold steel of the revolver against his temple, pulling the trigger before my horrified denial had even been given voice; the blankness behind his eyes that could not be wholly contributed to the hold that had been placed over him and which had haunted me for weeks and months afterwards as I came to understand that in no way, was that the first time he had ever held a gun to his head.
But what I actually found in the bathroom was a very much alive Mulder, huddled naked and shivering in the shower stall as the icy water beat down on him relentlessly and he wept helplessly in to the folded shelf of arms he had crossed over his knees, hugging his body in a defensive posture that reminded me of a wounded animal. His skin was stark white and when I tentatively touched his shoulder with my fingertips after first shutting off the relentless stream of water, I found him to be freezing cold.
It reminded me of another time in another place when I had found him in a similar position but back then he had been trying to warm himself up and this time, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind, that this was simply another way of him punishing himself; for not returning her call, for not being there for her, for failing once more in his protection of those he loved just as he believes he has always failed.
It had taken him a few moments to be aware of my presence but eventually he had raised bloodshot eyes, confusion radiating from him as though he were trying to place me and truthfully, I have never seen him look as lost or as broken as he did at that moment; that every horror we had lived through up until that point simply melted away in to nothingness. Â Because the Mulder I knew, the Mulder who had fought and struggled and refused to give up the fight that had consumed him his whole life was just......gone; an empty shell of a man who just had nothing left to give anymore.
âYou came backâ
The words were whispered, barely even audible but I heard them. Â I think I will always hear him no matter how quiet he is.
And he allowed me to draw him to his feet, not resisting as I gently rubbed him dry, wincing inwardly as his chilled skin broke out in gooseflesh as I towelled away the moisture and the cool air of the room hit him, speaking soft words of assurance to him that he would be okay; that we would get through this together somehow.
I donât think he believed me - even when I wrapped him in soft blankets and in turn wrapped myself around him, holding him tightly, spooning my body against his in an attempt to infuse him with my warmth as we lay together on the bed, feeling him tense and unmoving in return - I sensed he didnât believe me.
But slowly, so excruciatingly slowly, as I stroked my fingers through his hair, teasing the damp stands that dried and softened beneath my ministrations, I felt him begin to come back to me, relaxing his body against mine as the trembling finally stilled and his breathing became soft and even once more.
And I was unable to suppress my own tears any longer as he sighed raggedly, repeating the words spoken as though he needed to affirm to himself that I was there.
âYou came backâ
Because I know that whatever happens in the future, no matter how hard things get for us, how much he tries to push me away or how unworthy he feels, that I will always come back to him.
Always.
Maybe one day, if he allows himself of course, he might realise it too.
 Continued chapter four
(Sorry this took so long.  It was a hard one to write.  But the next part âEn Amiâ is done and we switch to Mulder POV for that one.  Brace yourselves cos itâs not pretty!)

How long to keep your documents
I have a lot of pet peeves.
Old âfriendsâ from high school asking me to join their MLM scheme.
Millionaires lecturing millennials about how they shouldnât buy avocado toast to save money.
People who say that real estate is the smartest investment (spoiler: itâs not).
One of my biggest pet peeves: Banks and businesses that send you junk mail.
Whenever I go to my mailbox and itâs filled with promotional material, I just want to send the mail right back to them. In fact, I switched my car insurance a while ago because they just wouldnât stop sending me mail three times a week! Ridiculous.
Itâs especially ridiculous when it comes to banks. And with all the documents you get from them, itâs hard to know what to throw away and what to keep.
Thatâs why I want to go into what documents you should be holding onto and for how long.
How long to keep documents
Here are my frameworks for how long you should hold onto certain documents, and more importantly, why you should hold onto them.
Keep forever
Keep 7+ years
Keep for 3 â 7 years
Keep for 1 year
Throw away immediately
Later, Iâll go into good ways you can keep them safe.
Keep forever
These are the documents youâre going to want to hold onto for your entire life â or just about.
They can be split up into two different areas:
#1. Identifying / Vital information Identifying and vital information documents are ones thatâll identify you as, well, you. They include the following:
Passport
Birth certificate
Marriage certificate
Death certificate
Social Security card
Government-issued ID cards
If you need it to verify your identity, you need to keep it and keep it safe at all times. If you lose it, you risk becoming a victim of identity theft and losing a lot of money.
Not to mention, youâll also have to enter through an overly bureaucratic process to get these documents back â which you always want to avoid.
#2. Taxes / Financial information These are things related to finances, taxes, and your estate. They include the following:
Wills
Tax returns (electronic or hard copy)
Tax payment history
Life insurance policy
Defined-benefit plan
Inheritance records
Legal filings
Bank account information (routing numbers, account numbers, passwords, etc.)
Morbid rule-of-thumb: If your loved one needs to access it after you die, youâre going to want to hold onto it.
Later, weâll give you good ways to keep these things safe for as long as possible. For now, letâs move onto our next section of documents âŠ
Keep for 7+ years
If you have any loans you are paying off, youâre going to want to hold onto all documentation regarding them until they are paid off. This depends entirely on your financial situation and ability to pay off your loan. These documents include things like your mortgage, car loan, and student loans.
Speaking of car loans, youâre also going to want to keep your car titles until you sell them. As before, this is going to depend entirely on your financial situation (though I recommend keeping a car for at least 10 years).
Other useful information to hold onto for the long term but not quite forever are documents relating to your investments. Including stocks, bonds, CDs, and mutual funds. Hold onto your purchase confirmations of those funds until you sell them.
Keep for 3 â 7 years
The documents you should hold onto for at least seven years all have to do with taxes.
Surprise. I know.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) suggests that you keep records that can verify your tax information for three to seven years.
From the IRS:
âThe length of time you should keep a document depends on the action, expense, or event which the document records. Generally, you must keep your records that support an item of income, deduction or credit shown on your tax return until the period of limitations for that tax return runs out.â
The period of limitations refers to the time you can go back and make a claim to your tax return or the IRS can apply additional taxes.
The IRS also includes recommendations for how long you should hold onto supporting tax documents in relation to their statute of limitations:
Keep records for 3 years if you claim credit or refund after you filed your tax return.
Keep records for 6 years if you forgot to report income that you should have reported and itâs more than 25% of the gross income reported on your return.
Keep records for 7 years if you claimed a loss on âworthless securities or bad debt deduction.â
Keep records indefinitely if you didnât file a tax return or if you filed a fraudulent tax return.
If thatâs confusing, just know that you should hold onto any document that supports the information provided on your tax return for three to seven years. This includes:
Bank statements
Brokerage statements
W-2 forms
1099 forms
Bills from dependent care
Property tax information
Charity donation receipts
Keep for one year (or less)
This section is going to contain a lot more of your month-to-month billing statements. They include:
Bank statements
Credit card statements
Pay stubs
Water bill
Electric bill
Gas bill
Internet bills
Phone bills
Receipts
When it comes to the bills and credit card statements, hold onto them for one month after you receive them just in case thereâs a discrepancy you need to address with the billing company.
You should also hold onto your receipts each month to make sure your credit and debit card statements are correct. Afterward, file it away in the trash.
When it comes to your bank and payment information, though, youâre going to want to hold them for at least a year as theyâll come in handy when tax season arrives. Once that year is done, though, feel free to throw them away â which brings us to âŠ
Throw away
Rev up your shredder because itâs time to throw all the following documents away:
Pre-approved credit cards
Refinancing
Loan consolidation
Coupons
Catalogs
Publishers Clearing House offers
Store promotions
This is everything non-essential to your financial health and just exists to clutter your mailbox and make your mail person annoyed with you.
How to store (and destroy) your documents
For your important identification and financial information contained in the âKeep foreverâ section, you should store them somewhere they can exist safely long term. Here are a few suggestions:
Safety deposit box. Your local bank or credit union should have safety deposit boxes available to rent. Fees can range anywhere from $20 to several hundred dollars a year depending on the size of the box and its location.
Personal safe. You can also keep your documents in a sturdy, fireproof safe. Consider hiring a contractor or doing some DIY work to hide the safe to ensure further protection from thieves.
Protected electronic file. For bank and estate information, you could also opt to keep those documents in a password encrypted file on a backed up network. This will keep it safe from things that can bring down physical documents like fire and water damage.
For documents that arenât as vital to your identity and financial health, such as tax records and credit card statements, you can simply store them in a filing folder or a drawer in your home. Most anywhere works as long as you know where it is and can access it easily.
When it comes to protecting your identity and finances, there arenât as many investments better than a good cross-cut shredder. Use it once youâre finished with the documents to protect yourself from identity and monetary theft. That way, you can throw away your documents knowing no one will be able to piece them together.
Keep your financial future safe
Knowing how long to keep documents is a crucial step to making sure your personal finances are in order â but itâs only one part of it. You also need to make sure you have a system in place that hedges against the downtimes while also earning you money.
Thatâs why I want to offer you my Free Insiderâs Kit. This is a collection of the best resources I have on personal finance drawn from more than a decade teaching people how to save, invest, and earn their money.
In it, youâll find my systems on how to build a financial system, invest, and save for any purchase passively, and how to create income streams to give you a limitless earning potential.

3 car crash.. I am the insurance companies hunt !!?
Hello .. I would like to listen to your opinios regarding this situation that has turned into a nightmare for me !!! I spent few months in Australia.. I have a full driving license.. I was driving on the M4.. I had 2 cars in front of me .. I was in the last car in the row ( third car ) .. the car in the front ( First car ) has braked suddenly .. The car in the middle ( second car ) hit it causing it much damage .. I could not stop at the right time and i hit the middle car afterwards .. Now .. The man in the middle car has lied to his insurance company and said that he stopped at the right time but when i hit him i made his car jump to the front and hit the front car .. I have now 2 insurance companies chasing me for money and treat me as a hunt because i had no third party property damage at the time of the accident .. My understanding was that the greenslip covers these things but actually they dont .. I have received bills from both companies.. 7000 AUD for the front car and 2000 for the middle car .. The details of repairs in the middle car ( that i hit on a very low speed) shows that damage at the rear of the car cost only 427 AUD and i offered them to pay it .. They refused and threatened me to go to court.. The police did not come at the place of the accident .. What do you think i should do?! How strong will be my situation at the court ?!

My car was rear-ended but I don't have car insurance?
Someone rear ended my car today. My insurance has been expired for a while now but I still called the insurance company and they filed a claim for me. When I mentioned that my insurance had expired, the lady who filed the claim said that the adjuster will call me on Monday and give me the details. Though the accident wasn't my fault, I am worried about not having insurance at the time. Also, nobody was injured in the accident but my back bumper had a very minor scratch. Was what I did wrong? And should I be worried about anything?""

Do I have to pay more for my car insurance?
I purchased a car with a car loan and I had to get full coverage insurance. I pay monthly and I have to do this for 6 months. The sixth month will be on May. I just paid off my car loan so I no longer want to pay extra money for full coverage. I had to pay a down payment for my insurance so my monthly payments would be cheaper. My question is do I have to pay another down payment if I switch to the liability coverage? Do I have to pay those last two months in order to switch to a liability coverage? I live in California.

Pamir highway via Wakhan valley in 7 days
This is my account of a trip Iâve done over Pamir highway via Wakhan valley in early August 2017. As always, Iâll focus on things relevant for planning your own trip, not my impressions. Please read About this blog.
Pamir highway via Wakhan valley route:
Khorugh - Bibi Fatima (public transport)
Bibi Fatima (next to Yamchun) - Zong (~30 km on foot)
Zong - Langar (~5 km on foot)
Langar - Rachiv (?) (private car ride, ~35 km) - Mats pass (~35 km on foot)
Mats pass - Maisara pass - M41 (~35 km on foot with a short hitched ride) - Alichur (hitched a ride, ~60 km)
Alichur - Murghab (hitched a ride)
Murghab - Osh (public transport - a shared taxi)
Somewhat informative map with my checkpoints. Download the image for higher resolution.
Check out this detailed map scan of the area and its legend. You can buy it in the tourist info center in Khorugh park in the center (somewhere near here). I do not own copyright to it, it costs 150 SOM and itâs here just to help you plan. Buy the map in Khorugh and support the people who created it. People working there speak English and know everything youâll want to know.
In short:
Equipment. Walking sticks, filtering bottle, hat (bought one for 15 SOM in Khorugh market - the sun is very strong), 2kg tent, some food, warm clothes for the night, raincoat, self inflatable mat, sleeping bag, 2 pairs of shoes, mom's Christmas cookies, basic medicine.Walking sticks were very useful for walking and especially for crossing the river and slippery terrain. Two pairs of worn hiking shoes failed me. Blisters were hell.
Water purification. The water filtering bottle is heavy, but it is the most useful and reliable item I had.
Reverse? Doing the reversed route (M41->Maisara pass->Mats pass->Langar) is better for views, altitude and walk/rest period distribution.
Duration. This worked out in 7 days because I found a ride immediately all the way to Murghab right after reaching M41.
Details day by day:
Day 0 (Sunday): Dushanbe - Khorog, 7:30-21:30, shared taxi, 280 SOM, sleep in a hostel. Shared taxi booked by the hostel from the main parking where all taxis stand. Arrive early to pick a good seat. Day spent in the car. Stopped along the way to eat, greet driverâs friends, repair car when needed, inflate tires along the way, fill car with gas, and use the toilet. Took some fresh dairy product given by the locals along the way for free and regretted it for the next two days.
On the way to Bibi Fatma.
Day 1: Khorugh - Bibi Fatima, 13:00 (really 14:30) - 21:00, shared taxi, 140 SOM. Stopped along the way to eat, take some more passengers from a broken car. Slept with a local family from a person met in the jeep. I speak few words of Russian and she spoke even less, but that didnât prevent her from helping me out. Ate dinner, stayed for one night, her family didn't want to take money, so I left each of the 3 kids a $5 bill hoping theyâll treat the next stranger equally kind.
View from Yamchun fortress.
Day 2: Bibi Fatima - Zong, 9:00-17:00, on foot. Enjoyed hot springs, after that the Yamchun fort, took a path from there back to the main road, and then walked along it towards Langar. No issues following the road, river water available along the way, very few cars, exclusively in the opposite direction, almost none in my direction. Took tea breaks in villages along the way. Hitched a ride for the last 6 km with a truck carrying potatoes and onions. Driver didnât want to take any money for the ride. Hotsprings in Zong again. An overly friendly and trustable Pakistani runs them, doing his best for you to feel safe there. Homestay at the very beginning of the village, marked by a street sign, mentioned in LonelyPlanet. 100 SOM with meals.
Day 3: Zong - Langar; ~1h, on foot. Woke up with 10 mosquito bites on my left hand which I apparently hadn't put enough of my 40% DEET spray on. Very unnecessary health risk. Morning hike to fortress ~1h to get there from the homestay taking the steep way up the hill. Bought a Tcell sim in the three floor store on the main road below the hot springs (Megafon doesn't work there), got charged more (~120 SOM) but no issues with stay permit/passport copy - the owner has a stash of passport copies he uses for registrations. If the ownerâs not there, ask someone where he is and theyâll call him. In Langar stayed with a local who invited me to camp by his house and we arranged him to take me to where Mats pass path starts next morning. Went petroglyph searching (after the cemetery after the church, as LonelyPlanet says). Other petroglyphs are available on marked locations close to eastern exit from the village. Ask for Panshanbe homestay for 50 SOM food + accommodation, advertised by a local met on the road. Big mistake in camping - landowner had dogs, who were not really happy with me staying during the night (not giving a fuck about me during the day though), and barking the shit out at me with my every move in the tent for the whole night.
Langar mall. Last chance to stock up before the trek.
Day 4: Langar - where Mats pass path starts (420 SOM, 5:00 - 6:00), and trek to a bit after Mats pass - locals pronounce it Mitts pass (6:00 - 17:30). The path starts steep up, after which I had to cross waste-deep river twice. The path is difficult and very steep at the beginning, but gets easier later.
It starts from here...
... and you just follow the path on the right.
Or you just get used to it. Not difficult to find, though. GPS signal all the way, the road is what can be seen on google terrain maps if you zoom in and know where to look (see the map scan above and add Gmaps GPS checkpoints). Water available when you need it all the way. Don't carry unnecessary load. Two shepherd (chobanie) houses, one on the way, one on the other side of the river. They speak basic Russian and will offer you tea and a place to stay. Pitched the tent a few minutes after Mats pass when the road starts to descend again. A nice green valley with a river on the left side. Few drops of rain several times during the night. Raindrops turned to frost by morning - have a warm sleeping bag.
Day 5: Mats passs - Maisara pass - M41 (7:00-17:30 walk including ~6km hitched ride) - Alichur (18:00-00:30 hitched a ride on M41. Several shepherdâs houses are along the way. One right after Matts pass, one again before the iron bridge (follow visible road or you'll have to jump stones across the river), several more houses a few hours later. Road/path is always recognizable, but be careful about road splits. But thereâs also a path on the other side of the river, where some road splits will take you. Water mostly available every 60 minutes - the river digs a canyon often. Hitched a ride (the only car passing that day), a shared jeep by locals from Jawshangoz to Maisara pass. A few shepherd houses around Maisara pass. Otherwise beautiful silence, a lake and cold wind there - the nature really wouldnât care if you died there. Descended from the mountain, found a bridge to the M41, After reaching M41 hitched a ride to Alichur. Thereâs a great spot for camping right next to the bridge and a shepherd house visible from there. The truck was terribly slow, but no one passed us by. Lots of trucks going in the opposite direction. Water close to the road only occasionally - trekking here would be a bad idea. In Alichur everything is closed at 00:30, as you can imagine. Homestays were already full. My three new friends from the truck went knocking on house doors until someone agreed to put us up for the night. 30 SOM. Slept in the room with the whole family. Got blankets and warm tea in the morning. More than enough, compared to camping outside.
So please, MTV, pimp my ride!
Day 6: Alichur - Murghab (5:00-11:00). In the same truck which brought me to Alichur. Homeowner said it wouldnât be easy to hitch another ride on Sunday. During the ride I really didnât see much traffic in either direction. Not much water along the road either. The road is now flat so the truck goes even above 20 km/h. A short break for bare-hand marmot hunting. I watched from the truck. Enough for me. After reaching Murghab had something to eat with my new friends. Afterwards we parted our ways and I gave them $60 ($20 each). They didn't ask for money and said what they did for me doesn't cost them anything. Thatâs certainly true, but I still gave it to them in hopes they would treat any other traveler with equal kindness. Took a three hour break in Murghab, walking around bazar and town, and then continued to Osh. 2:30pm-3:30am. Difficult ride, sharing the front seat of the jeep with another guy.
Day 7: Murghab - Osh (14:30 previous day - 03:30 on day 7). Overcrowded jeep, long ride, mountain border crossing, driver and passengers exchanging a bunch of banknotes right before the border. The border control police officer was happy to say he knows a sportsman from my country. I was too, as I was too exhausted to have any other conversation. Terrible roads and bumps keeping me awake. Driver suddenly turns back as if he lost something on the road. Then turns the car back around and continues. We make a stop to eat something in a local restaurant around midnight after Saray-Tash. We arrived in Osh and the drivers helped me find a place to stay for the night.

Main Characters
some of them modeled on Hâs friends, thereâs even a photo with the group
characters generally shown as they interact with one another, and as the territory where reason, impulse, and emotion fight for predominance; they are at varying degrees aware of their motives and reactions, (and here the alcohol they consume could be a metaphor for the different shades and levels of acuteness in perception)
Jake Barnesâš the narrator and principal male character, journalist for the NYHerald, American expatriate, living in Paris, Bd St Michel in the 20s within a circle of friends and associates; frequents cafĂ©s and restaurants rive gauche and droite; equally at home in Spain; has been to Pamplona, and is regarded as an âaficionadoâ of toros; he has had a long-standing relationship to Brett, whom he met in a hospital after the war -where he was wounded with permanent consequences-, and at whose (Brettâs) standby beck and call he has remained despite her freely and ubiquitously dispensed erotic favours. So it does not seem unjustified to conclude that, despite or maybe even with and because of all his moaning, and also against the background of all the other female-male relationships the book presents, he might be enjoying it after all.
Brett, Lady Ashley an English woman who married an aristocrat; at 34 she enjoys life, is generally the focus of male attention, and uses relationships in an unabashed way to keep her emotionally supported and satisfied as well as financially afloat; the novel suggests that this is natural, generally acceptable, and cool; engaged to be married to Mike C; characterized by one of her ex-lovers as âCirce, who turns men into swineâ (cf Circe), but equally the character who insists on âgood behaviorâ whatever the circumstances.
âšMike Campbell Scottish businessman in financial troubles ?, believes he is engaged to marry Brett, whom he appears to be fond of and unable/-willing to leave, and in the course of whose open unfaithfulness he indulges in drinking and bad form.
Robert Cohnâš American writer of Jewish origin, Princeton grad, divorcee, with 3 children, engaged to Frances, but then they split, just as he turns out to be a successful author, and meets Brett; after a fling with her and its aftermath he breaks down; the novel appears to suggest he goes back to F later.
Pedro Romero young Spanish matador de toros of great promise -modelled on El Niño de la Palma (Cayetano Ordoñez y Aguilera); from humble origins, but with a partly modern outlook: he speaks English well, but does not want to show that openly, as he is aware of the fact that he has to accommodate both worlds, traditional Spain, and a more liberal future with the country opening up to the outside world; falls in love with Brett, and they start an affair; not long afterwards they split again for reasons of irreconcilable expectations and backgrounds, and the difference in age; appears to be aware of himself and his position in the world, and have the intellectual and emotional means to stand his ground; Re theme of masculinity: he is the one man (even though some argue, he is just a boy âbefore the development of phallic consciousnessâ: cf Richards, S., et al) in the story who faces danger and death on a daily basis (almost), yet the least boastful about it; we only see that danger indirectly, embodied in the man killed during the last encierro, or the steer wounded during the desencajonamiento. Exchange Pedro-Brett p161: - The bulls are my best friends. - You kill your friends? - Always ⊠so they donât kill me. ÂżRelevance for the novel, the problems in emotional relationships, the profound and irremediable irrationality, terror, and beauty of âlifeâ, and the essential lack of control we have? cf also âIceberg conceptâ!
Some critics and comments reproach his young age, cf p 213, above & below: Brett: â... Heâs only nineteen. ...â But, consider, being a superior matador he will command quite some emotional stability and he definitely has an acute awareness of his own place within his professional group and traditional environment (cf 161f â ... It would be very bad, a torero who speaks Englishâ ...); plus, he is an entrepreneur within a booming industry that employs lots of people, will take part in some sixty corridas a year, has, after âwaitering in Gibâ and picking up quite some English there, been working for several years as a novillero, had his alternativa (promotion to full matador), and is responsible for his cuadrilla of at least 6 (3 banderilleros, 2 picadores, a mozo de espada), owns (maybe not yet, but soon probably 1 or 2 cars) several trajes de luces + additional gear, has an apoderado, who manages his temporadas, and travels up and down the country, including southern France, maybe Mexico etc in winter. Many of the best matadores (Luis Miguel Dominguin, Manolete -Manuel Laureano RodrĂguez SĂĄnchez, JosĂ© GĂłmez Ortega -Joselito ... ) were already remarkable and competent at a comparatively young age. Just so much as a reply to the â... not  manhood but rather a wish to regress into a naĂŻve boyhood ideal of manhood ...â assumption from Richards 3, and maybe also from Brett.
Bill Gorton American writer, friend and confidant of Jake; on that fishing trip to Burgete they spend a few carefree days together, showing a type of close male relationship -partly together with the Englishman Harris- without any romantic or female angle; the character of Bill suggests an alternative -or complementary- approach to life -as compared to the other males, with the exception of Pedro R.- not least with his âirony and pityâ line. He is the one male figure of some importance outside Brettâs romantic-erotic influence, and frequently offers an independent position (cf Richards, S.); in some ways, and not least for his witty remarks, comparable to the figure of the fool /jester in some of Shakespeareâs plays
Pamplona, Café Iruña, Plaza del Castillo
