Home cooking, homicide // final(est) girl Bex x Buddy Swanson
A/N: Happy happy birthday @bisexual-horror-fan!!! Writing this for you was sooooo much fun and I can't thank you enough for all of the films we've shared, the discord chats, the streams, the writing, the commissions, just... everything. You have helped me make me braver and bolder and louder and prouder and you influence me every day in your teachings. You make this world a brighter, better, gentler and wiser place and I don't know what I'd do without you!!! I'm very proud of you and how far you've come and will continue to go.💖So here's to you, Bex, happy fuckin' birthday!! You're the final girl to end all final girls! Just as well you have a slasher to complement you on your journey...😉👀
Also, fun fact! The title of this gift is from Motörhead's song Eat The Rich, which is one of my favourite song of theirs! I was listening to it while writing this introductory note and got inspired by the lyric
"Get a sweet thing on the side Home cooking, homicide"
And here we have it! I hope you enjoy!! If not, I'm happy to write you something else.🥺💖
Word count: 2, 543.💕
You wondered how many people could say that their work shifts doubled as a date with their partner... not many, you would wager. Not that you could afford to, even if you wanted to, what with the meagre wages you and Buddy were paid for the incredibly demanding and repetitive work you did. You practically ran the entire kitchen between yourselves; both of you doing double the work listed in your job descriptions. Camilla was also hired to work here, but with her now working on the next production, she was rarely if ever on a kitchen shift. You and Buddy had been picking up where she should have been, so it was more work for the same money... typical capitalist bullshit. Even at summer camp.
But still... The point stood.
How many other people could say that their work shifts doubled as a date with their partner?
For you and Buddy, food was an every day guarantee and a joint staple in your daily routines. It was a joy to cook, a wonder to be able to eat what you wanted while you were on shift so long as you had the ingredients. Sampling dishes to make sure that the food tasted good wasn't strictly a necessity but you always said that doing so was for 'quality assurance purposes'; and it never failed to make Buddy smile at you fondly over industrial cans of food. To be able to take care of one another while you worked as best and as fast as you could as you got swept off your feet trying to feed the tens of kids at camp, the managers, actors and cast members, the musicians and everyone else who worked behind the scenes to make the magic happen on the modest stage, was a gift. You loved the life you and Buddy had built together and you loved the way you loved each other. You loved food, trying new recipes and dishes, eating and hanging out, and even doing the dishes was fun when you had Buddy standing shoulder to shoulder with you. He would sometimes flick bubbles over at you, trying to distract you, but you would only grin and swat at his ass with a sharply aimed towel the next time you walked past him. He always saw you coming. Sometimes he allowed you to do it, a smirk on his face with the sharp crack of the towel, and sometimes he simply dodged. It depended on his mood and how playful he felt.
It was just good to share the camp kitchen with Buddy, and your own passion and love for food and eating only made everything all the more richer for you. Buddy could take or leave cooking, he didn't care. Hell, he couldn't wait to get the hell out of dodge, but you made the kitchen what it was for the both of you. Your presence made everything brighter and more hopeful for Buddy, and he showed his appreciation for you through physical affection and food.
Buddy was always fun to watch in the kitchen. He cared little for the 'freaks' you both cooked for every day and yet he never allowed his emotions to get in the way of the role he had to play in the kitchen. The food itself was never affected by his hatred for his job and the person he was employed by. It was a hard slog in the kitchen daily for people he cared not for, but it was also a chance to spend the day with you. The both of you knew what you were doing in the kitchen and you knew the layout of the camp kitchen like the backs of your hands, so it was little more than a dance around one another to make the daily menus happen and even come up with some dishes which were rare treats; something you cooked just because you loved it. Or, if the budget allowed, just because you could.
Like oven done ribs.
It was a low effort meal (most of the things prepared in the camp kitchen were as the palettes of children and teenagers could be somewhat... limited, as could be the assigned budget) but it tasted so good – it was one of your favourites for a reason and Buddy loved to surprise you with it on special occasions; such as your birthday. He had squirrelled away some of the budget so that he could get you the ribs without anyone aboveboard finding out. You could have bought the ribs yourself, they were often on your grocery lists, but where was the fun in surprising you with your own food?
When asked, you could rattle off the ingredients like it was the back of your hand, and this was how Buddy had gotten the recipe from you. Emphasis had always remained on the apple cider vinegar being applied before the rub, which involved so many herbs and spices it had initially made Buddy's head spin, but now the gathering and application of these flavours to the ribs had become second nature to him. He wasn't as quick about it as you were, but he was close.
It always made your heart fuzzy to watch him, his dark curls hanging over his blue eyes, his eyebrows reaching for each other in concentration as his hands moved over spice bottles and herb packets, pulling one out and then either using it or putting it back with a slight shake of his head when he had picked out the wrong one.
Sometimes you helped him, sometimes you didn't... It depended on how bored you were, how busy the kitchen was and how evil you felt. Buddy always found the right one eventually, and watching him struggle could be fun. It wouldn't be fun for the food, though, so more often than not, you helped even when Buddy was more than capable of doing it himself.
You just liked to be close to him.
"You think these ribs will take long?"
Buddy's voice was quiet, his tender blues fixed on you as he asked a question he already knew the answer to just to hear your voice. He was soft like that sometimes, but only for you. His final girl.
"Nah," you shook your head, eyeing Buddy with a gaze almost as hot as the heat coming from the preheated stove. "Two, two and a half hours max. Want the meat falling off the bone, get it all nice and tender."
Buddy nodded his head. He was becoming increasingly distracted, quiet, while Camilla was becoming louder, more annoying. You had never liked her. You wondered what was happening to the Swansons, but you figured things would reveal themselves in all good time. And if not, well... Buddy was private, he kept things to himself, but if he felt the need to talk to you, then he would do so when he was good and ready and not a second before. It wasn't your place to push. Buddy knew you were there for him as surely as he knew he had curly hair, and you felt comfort and security in that knowledge too. The love which existed between the both of you was as natural and as easy as breathing. You didn't have to think about it.
It just was.
Buddy was a rather affectionate man. He didn't seem that way, but sometimes instead of flicking soap suds at you at the kitchen sink when the both of you were washing up, he would instead shuffle to stand behind you so that he could rest his forehead on the back of your shoulder, or he would wrap his arms around your waist and pull you flush against him. There were no intentions other than giving and receiving love in equal measures. He had been so deprived of touch and love; the upbringing he had received after his mother's murder wasn't love, not really. It was walking on eggshells and sitting on a secret so callous and cruel that it had twisted him into the man you knew him as; childhood trauma left to fester turned into a wound that never healed and instead ripped open and bled more still every time he had to face the man who ran the camp and the Swanson siblings' lives: Roger McCall.
It was a wound which never stopped bleeding, but you did what you could to help Buddy patch himself up.
You could have only ever suspected that patching Buddy up so that he could begin to heal was not what he wanted. No, what Buddy wanted was revenge. On Roger, on the industry, on his sister for becoming an actress... The Metal Killer was bloodthirsty and if revenge was what he wanted, then... it was revenge which he would have.
But not yet... the timing wasn't right. The place was, but the time had yet to pass. The much anticipated opening night of The Haunting of the Opera was when Buddy would get his revenge and Camilla would most likely end up being collateral damage. Buddy didn't want that for her, he really didn't, but he had chosen his path and she had chosen hers. It seemed that their life path, which they had always walked through together, had a fork in the road and they would be going their own ways. They were twins. Buddy and Camilla had always lived life together, but somewhere along the way did the fates show Buddy that they were to die alone, separated from one another in all ways but blood.
Never to meet again, if Buddy's own show went to plan. He was devastated to potentially lose his sister but if that was the way it had to be, then so be it. She had made her bed by deciding to follow her mother's footsteps to the letter. Buddy had dug the graves he needed, since he had failed in his plans to stop his sister from becoming an actress. All that was left was for the sands of time to turn their tricks, as they do on everyone. Buddy had accepted the way things would go. You were kept in the dark, your suspicions rising but otherwise left unattended, but your own role would show itself in time.
Until then, though, he was cooking oven done ribs for his final girl's big thirtieth birthday. And, oh, what a filthy decade it was to be. You and Buddy had plans to make money. Both of you had employment history with food, so it wouldn't be too difficult for you to work with Buddy in the restaurant he wanted to open one day. Probably in New York - that's where the money was. With money came power, and with power came the ability for Buddy to get out from underneath Roger's nails. Camilla too, if she wanted. It was looking increasingly like she didn't want to; she wanted fame, she wanted her mother back and she thought that pipe dream lay in following her mother's path. She was wrong, Buddy knew that, and so did you, but Camilla hadn't quite caught up yet to the fact that the industry she had dreamed of participating in ever since she was a child would eat her alive.
By the time she woke up, it would be too late.
The oven beeped, preheated to the correct temperature, and Buddy cast his eyes over the ribs to check them over before he slid them into the oven, smoothly kicking the door shut as he flipped a heavily grease stained white towel over his broad shoulder. It was one smooth movement; he had had years of practice. The mountain of dishes which had accumulated during the making of lunch made him scoff in derision. It was becoming harder and harder for him to take this job seriously. His dark ambitions were so important, his rage and trauma bigger than he. He just wanted Roger and the freaks to shut their faces, he wanted to get out, to get away, he wanted his own money and his own place, Buddy wanted freedom with no one remaining from his previous life except you, especially after spending most of his life living out choices which were made for him by a man he loathed.
As the ribs cooked in the oven, baking in the spices and the meat's own juices, you and Buddy entertained one another with jokes, miniature food fights (conducted using only waste products like bell pepper hearts or bits of spaghetti which never made it into the pot from where Buddy had thrown it in the general direction of the pot of boiling water without a care for where the uncooked pasta landed), and generally working hard to feed the entire camp. No matter the situation, you fought hard and somehow always made things work. Watching you in the kitchen, watching you go between cooking and cleaning up, always humming and singing, often made Buddy wonder how you would handle The Metal Killer. He knew beyond all shadow of a doubt that you would handle it and him with grace.
When you decided to do something, nothing and no one would stop you. It was what made you a final girl. It was what made you the final girl. You would survive the camp but all others around you would fall - the ones on Buddy's Wall, anyway. The rage within Buddy was strong enough that he could bring down someone twice his size, he could bend limbs and appendages with little effort; the kitchen had given him more skills than just time management. It had given him muscles, it had given him the weapons and the means with which to protect himself and his sister, to protect his final girl even though she could and would protect herself. Buddy admired the way you faced a situation with the seriousness it required and did everything you could even when it felt wrong, because you knew it was right. It was a distinction observed in few people. Buddy had only ever been able to keep quiet about the things he had seen, the things he knew, but you spoke up, you used your voice, and Buddy felt comfort in knowing that you lived for yourself in the way he had never been able to, no thanks to Roger.
The last hour of cooking the ribs involved basting the meat with its own juices every ten minutes, and so entertainment slowed, but the affection between you and Buddy remained as strong as ever. While the camp's menu for the various departments and age ranges had been fully catered to as per Roger's instructions, you and Buddy had somehow managed to find the time and ingredients to make your favourite sides to accompany the oven done ribs. It was to be a fire birthday meal, but the plans didn't end there. Not today, not with so many years of your life to celebrate alongside the promise of many more to come. More often than not, Buddy had more plans than actions, but on your birthday, your birthday, Buddy had more actions since the only real plan was to celebrate his final girl. His.

this is super long but i've been a fan of a kpop group for years now and the kinnporsche fandom mirrors many aspects i've seen in kpop as well... the development of solo stans who fight about which of their faves is the most mistreated, the campaigning for solo schedules, the idea that their fave is a helpless victim held captive by the company and needs help from the fans, etc.
also, when i first saw mileapo go to the airport and boc told fans when to go there to see them, i was extremely worried bc i've seen my faves get mobbed at the airport many times and the only thing that works is establishing a strict fan culture of 'don't go to the airport' which maybe has the exception of official schedule (which is clearly marked different bc press will be there) and 'keep physical distance and don't run after them'. everything that's not announced is private schedule and any photos/infos of private schedule are not to be shared. the kp cast indulges fans by posing for pictures with them, but i wonder when it'll become too much... for my group, differentiating between public and private time works ok mostly, although there are still 'fans' who don't care and share that anyways, but it creates a different fandom environment, i think.
i know that international fans like to see current photos (and since the hype is fairly new, i guess it's also fun for the guys, for now), but at least in my fandom, a lot of the people who take almost professional photos are also stalkers (sasaengs) who buy and trade private (including flight) information. unless it's been officially announced, nobody should know which flight they're taking. if they still know, they've probably bought the info or know someone who has. it's almost impossible to stop that bc sadly there's always someone who will sell it, for the right price. while boc could get better security at the airport, it is still the fan culture that enables this stalking behaviour, especially when they make money from selling the photos as merch to fans. there surely are fansites who are not stalkers, but sometimes it's hard to see the difference and a lot of fans don't even care as long as the photos look good. i know of several fansites of my favourite group who have even been publicly blacklisted by the label, but they still have hundreds of thousands of followers on twitter... if boc does anything, it should be to discourage fans from going to the airport in general, and the fans themselves need to create a different fandom environment where most fans (everyone is impossible) agree on appropriate behaviour and draw clear lines both in direct contact with the artists and online with which accounts + content to share and praise.

In Love (Aimer)
Original English lyrics to my nemesis the bane of my existence “Aimer” from Roméo et Juliette. My latest breakthrough is without a doubt the counterpart solos; no matter how many improvements I made, I could never come up with decent lines. I do slightly regret not being able to include some ideas like leaving fear behind and love giving meaning to your life (the Hungarian equivalent especially is so nice). But at least with these lyrics I get to have both commentary re: the feud and epic foreshadowing in my non-aria aria, which is nice. What can I say, my English RetJ are expert shade-throwers, 200% done with literally everything, and have slightly feral vibes (canon-compliant, naturally). You guys will tell me if I have completed the assignment. Reblog, like, comment, etc.
MAJOR-ISH EDIT 7/9/23: Tweaked some of the words (the "our" was perhaps too on-the-nose for my tastes). Also decided to replace the Chorus echo of Juliet's verse with an original one à la Hungarian to lessen repetition somewhat and give a sense of ˜progression. If you dislike it, just pretend it's the Juliet verse echo; that works too. Otherwise...not gonna lie, this is looking pretty official; at the very least the B-melody verse is set in stone. Which means, of course, that I will 99.999% change it up even more, lol.
MAJOR EDIT 8/30/23: Aaaaaaaand I’m back, changing things up some more. Surprise! So apparently the lot of you really didn’t like the repetitions…for a famously repetitious song at both the lyrical and melodic level. 😑 Luckily for you lot, I wasn’t satisfied with all the “I”s, so I took this opportunity to switch it to “we” and keep the gerunds. I had to sacrifice some of my internal rhymes (RIP), but I kept the most important stuff re: RetJ rhyming together. Plus, now they refer to each other as the married couple they most certainly are. It’s canonical, folks. Either way, this turned out to be one of my most faithful translations yet.
In Love (Aimer)
Romeo In love beyond this life’s end We’ll be until we’re rising And yearning in flight, in splendor In love, beyond this life’s end
Juliet In love, beyond this time’s end We’ll be until we’re binding And burning in flame, in tender In love, beyond this time’s end
Both In love, we’re strong together Fighting for one another Plighting to one another Our lives, our souls forever
Chorus In love beyond this life’s end We’ll be until we’re rising And yearning in flight, in splendor In love, beyond this life’s end
In love beyond this life’s dream We’ll be until we’re living And dwelling in hope, in meaning In love, beyond this life’s dream
In love beyond this world’s wrong (Juliet: Beyond this world’s wronging) We’ll be until we’re dying (Juliet: In love till I’m dying) And drowning in night, in longing In love, beyond this world’s wrong
In love beyond this life’s end (Romeo: Beyond this life’s ending) We’ll be until we’re rising (Romeo: In love till I’m rising) And yearning in flight, in splendor In love, beyond this life’s end
All In love...
#🫠#life is pain#aimer is pain#romeo et juliette#retj#roméo et juliette#aimer#my lyrics#retj english#i’m just going to have this as my newest version#and whatever corrections i make i’ll do them to this one#i do like how the hungarians created a whole new verse for the second chorus one#if i have inspiration i could take a whack at it#but i’m afraid i’m too traumatized for now#after therapy perhaps#also ‘life’s end’ in singular since retj think of themselves as having one life ofc#and ofc their verses rhyme internally with each other#retj do not and should not chill

A guide to Augur AU
As my longest solo project (sans a guest addition) and most developed AU, as well as on a request from an anon, I thought I'd make an introduction post and masterlist to the sprawling mess that is augur AU. So, without further ado!
So, what is Augur AU?
Augur AU is the universe in which my series to Aaron and his sons is set. The basic premise is to flip the script on the medicine cats can't have kits rule. Now instead they must because the position is hereditary. They also engage in the making of marriage alliances by transfering their kids across Clan lines, because I really like arranged marriage and marriage alliance drama and it felt fitting to include.
I first floated the concept way back when I was still posting Warriors content to my main blog (@aerial-jace). Since then I've talked a lot about my ideas and worldbuilding for this universe. I consider the Ao3 series the only definitive source of canon, any concept I throw around on my blog is subject to chane at any time for any reason unless it's already been established in an entry on the series.
Why is it called to Aaron and his sons?
The title is a Biblical reference, more specifically it is pulled from Numbers 3:5-10 as quoted in the NIV (New International Version) translation.
5 The Lord said to Moses, 6 “Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him. 7 They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the tent of meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle. 8 They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle. 9 Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him. 10 Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death.”
The passage refers to the establishment of the two priestly castes present in Judaism, the levites and the kohanim, which felt appropriate for a series all about exploring the concept of medicine cat as a hereditary priestly caste. Although the series is not meant to be a commentary on any real world religions, least of all Judaism, it still felt appropriate to turn to a Biblical reference for a title just due to how important and widely read the Bible is as a work of literature.
What is a patrician, an augur, and a matriarch/patriarch?
Patricians are the direct descendants of Moth Flight through the lineage of one of her kids: Blue Whisker, Bubbling Stream, Spider Paw, and Honey Pelt (or as the modern clans know them Mothflight, Bluewhisker, Bubblestream, Spiderpool, and Honeypelt). They are the only ones allowed to become augurs which is the term for medicine cats.
In order to not dilute the patrician status too much, only cats with an augur parent or grandparent are considered true patricians. Cats whose closest augur ancestor is a great grandparent don't qualify. So, for instance, while Sandstorm was an augur, neither her daughter Squirrelflight nor her granddaughter Sparkpelt were, thus her great grandchildren Nightheart and Finchlight aren't either.
A patriarch or matriarch is the most senior augur in a Clan, with preference for an augur born in the Clan they reside in. So, for instance, at the start of the story Sandstorm is the matriarch of ThunderClan and under her are the augurs: Leafpool (ThunderClan born) and Crowfeather (WindClan born). Although Crowfeather is 6 moons older than Leafpool, at Sandstorm's death it's Leafpool who gets the matriarch title instead of Crowfeather getting the patriarch title.
As the originators of the augur bloodline, Mothflight and Micah are often given the titles of The Matriarch and The Patriarch. Although it's usually Mothflight alone who's given a lot of press and importance given she was the one directly chosen by StarClan to be the first augur and he was just the matching set of chromosomes to create the lineage founders.
Fun aside about why I chose those terms particularly: I wanted to give them a Roman aristocracy vibe, particularly because in my research as I was looking for terms to replace medicine cat and such it came up that priestly offices in the Classical Greek and Roman world were often hereditary. Thus patrician for the caste, and augur (a term for a diviner/priest that reads the future in bird flight patterns) for the profession. Matriarch/patriarch was almost going to be materfamilias/paterfamilias, but I decided on English instead of Latin as to not seem too pretentious.
What is The Gift of the Patricians?
The Gift of the Patricians, also commonly called just The Gift, is a set of hereditary health conditions and neurodivergences that have been reinforced in the patrician bloodline through generations of intermarrying. These include traits that are seen as positive (such as autism or ADHD, seen as signs of closer spiritual connection to StarClan) as well as those that are seen as negative (such as hip dysplasia, a condition interpreted as a sign that the natural place of a patrician is inside the augurs' den and not out and about as a warrior).
Not all patricians are what the Clan cats call gifted but it's very, very common in the bloodline. Other conditions that often present in gifted individuals include but are not limited to: epilepsy, diabetes, and dementia. Jayfeather's blindness in particular is something I want to emphasize is NOT due to The Gift. It may be congenital but it is not genetic at all.
So, are the patricians all inbred?
Most are to a degree, yes! Outsider blood does enter the bloodline with some regularity. Sandstorm and Firestar, Ashfoot and Deadfoot, Leopardsun and Stonestar, and Littlecloud and Tawnypelt are all examples of augurs taking a mate outside the bloodline. But because of how important augurs are to the foreign policy of their Clan, they often are offered up to the augur of another Clan as a mate as a way to seal marriage alliances.
More often than not, an augur taking a non-patrician mate is done as a way to legitimize a controversial deputy choice or otherwise give them a popularity boost.
What's the family tree situation?
You can consult it right here. Beware spoilers, it goes all the way to Shadowsight and the plot of to Aaron and his sons is only just getting to late Po3. Might merit an update. The fact they don't go all the way back is intentional in most cases. For the sake of my sanity, the ThunderClan patrician lineage only goes as far back as Spottedleaf.
EXTRA!
Posts containing ideas I've thrown around for augur AU. Some explain background events a little more. Some touch upon the future of the series beyond the core plot of the Jayfeather & Willowshine arranged marriage love story. Some are possibilities I'm deliberating for said main plot.
A potential explanation for why Leopardsun and Stonestar are still lovingly married in spite of TigerClan
Unexplored Crowfeather angst
Why was Willowpaw born when her parents were relatively old?
Berrynose, Hazeltail, and Mousewhisker
The politics of WindClan
Ashfoot angst
Littlecloud & Tawnypelt
Daisy's second litter
Needletail's reaction to being roped into all this
SkyClan's reaction to this weird tradition
The current generation of ThunderClanners (Nightheart, Finchlight, Bayshine, Myrtlebloom, Graykit, Stemkit, and Bristlekit)
Frostpaw
As well there are dozens of mini AUs built off this one contributed on by the anons in my inbox. I could give y'all a guide to those as well, but this one has run on long enough.
Hope this was a useful introduction to augur AU for the uninitiated. Hope I can keep creating content y'all will enjoy.

Simon x Billy
The Year of OTP: January
Chapter 1: Where’s Giuseppe WTF?
January prompt: Historical au (because 2015 counts as the past)
Note: Simon x Billy is a slow-burn m/m fic; turns NSFW (male/male, consensual) beginning tamely at Chapter 7.
Meet the OTP: Simon Lewis, author and star of The Mortal Instruments, who keeps writing himself into his novels; and Billy Delaney, Irish handsome devil and international chef of mystery; and also Italy. It’s sort of like a threesome. TMI AU: Instead of Simon Lewis being only a character in the best-selling YA series, he is now also the author of that series. TW: References to having been cheated on, bad language, bad humor, Irish-isms, calling young people criminals, making fun of Americans, LGBTQIA+ themes, having to wait for the NSFW chapters to show up.

Chapter 1: Where’s Giuseppe WTF?
———/Simon/———
OK, fine, baggage claim was a little rough. Finding baggage claim was a little rough. Finding Customs was a little rough. Customs was Customs. I mean, what’s to know, they look at you suspiciously, and if you smile excitedly cuz you’re in a new country, they look at you suspiciously some more, and you start wondering if they’ve noticed something you haven’t.
At least that’s how I felt. Like, maybe I have a single very long nose hair or something horrifying like that. I don’t know? They’re Customs. They notice shit like that.
On a positive note, they’re just fine communicating with people who only “have” one language. They asked me if I had Italian, and I kept waiting for them to finish their sentence. You know? Like, do I have Italian… Food? Relatives? Then they were like, “Do you have any other languages?” And I’m thinking, maybe I caught one in-flight. Planes are well known for making people ill. Or I could’ve caught something cool, like Norwegian! In fact, I could’ve had it my whole life and it’s just never had any symptoms. You never know.
Meanwhile, the train ran on time. And the Red Sea parted. Two impossibilities amounting to miracles.
So yeah, sure, I’d done some prepping for the trip. I refuse to reveal my sources as they are completely mortifying. OK fine, it wasn’t even an app. It was a book. With pictures in it. More specifically, the one my parents used when they planned their trip to the Amalfi Coast.
I used it to plan Our Trip. The one that became My Trip. Flying solo. In so, so many ways.
Believe me, and you need to trust me on this one: Never propose to a girl you met in costume. And if you did and it turned out great, shut up. And mazel tov. May all your children have bar and bat mitzvahs with a good dj. And puppies.
Just remember, your first impression of her is while she’s cosplaying someone else. You might find you’re falling for a personality that isn’t really her on the inside. The whole thing is exhausting. Because my beautiful but cruel shiki found somebody else to cosplay with.
She revealed this shortly after breaking up with me.
No, Simon. I do not choose you. No, Simon. I never choose you. Said every girl ever.
She gave me lots of reasons why. Constructive observations for my next relationship, she said. So at least I had something to think about on the plane to Naples that made me feel really good about myself. For 22 hours including two layovers and a bonus train ride from the airport to downtown Naples. (Trust me, just fly into Rome. Why didn’t it occur to me to fly into Rome?)
I once read a book where the most flamboyant, exciting character said something of extreme poetry and wisdom. (Because poetry and wisdom can both be extreme. Whatever.) It went a little something like this: “Unsolicited advice is just criticism. Ok fine, I’ve read it more like 25-30 times. Alright look, I can’t be coy. I wrote it. And 25-30 is how many revisions my editor tried to convince me to take it out. (I won.)
I like stories that stretch out over like 20 books in a series. You get to stay with the characters you love until you finally stop re-starting the series the minute you close the last page of the last book. Again.
I think I’d be a vampire irl. And I have thought a lot about it. I mean a lot of thinking on this topic. And you can’t convince me that fairies and werewolves are even in the running for best paranormal destiny.
I like stories where choosing to be a vampire is one of the safer bets. Because you’re already dead.
Don’t start. I’ve fought table top duels over this and I refuse to go over that ground again. Take my word for it. You want to be a vamp.
She was a vamp. I was a vamp. (D, because who else?) We thought we were made for each other. Until she didn’t. Think that anymore. I guess she’d been not-thinking that anymore for months and months. And here I am, presenting her with a trip to Italy where I was going to propose. I had it all planned out. I mean I had it all planned out. Because that’s how I roll. (A 20-sided die, obviously.) Ugh. So when she says she doesn’t want to leave the city, I’m like, “But it’s Italy! And me!”
Turns out the trip wasn’t the only thing she didn’t want.
Turns out she was also being quite literal about not leaving the city. And so, like the heartless traitor she is, she abandoned Brooklyn for the Upper West Side and a yoga instructor with a man bun and half a million followers on Twitter.
Half a million? What even is that? I mean, I get 100 followers -- wow, friend, you are on fire! I get a million followers -- wow, somewhat famous person, you are on fire! But, like, what’s halfway between the two?
So the “hot yoga instructor” -- her words, not mine -- is a person that exists. I told her that she didn’t have to be mean about another, hotter guy. And you know what’s coming next. You totally do.
The hot yoga instructor is an instructor of hot yoga.
But since I mentioned it, she laughed and said he is also a hot instructor, of yoga.
Thanks. I don’t feel angry tears at all when I think about that.
Anyways, I was talking about trains in Italy running on time, and somehow I land on vamps. Welcome to the brain of Simon Lewis, enjoy your stay.
Oh my god. There’s a McDonalds here. It’s like a crime against Italian humanity. “That should be illegal,” I announce to no one in particular. Followed by “Shut up, Lewis, that guy over there is staring.” And yes, I do use my last name when I scold myself out loud in public. Because people find that attractive and charismatic.
So the train in Italy running on time is actually my problem. “My driver” isn’t due for another 30 minutes. Which means I get to spend an additional 30 minutes enjoying my own company some more. And also avoiding talking to any strangers. Which is particularly difficult in the Naples train station. And even more unlikely when you’re standing in the same spot forever and ever.
I’m full of my mother’s dire predictions of criminal young people offering their services to help you find your way around the train station. And when that fails, they’re supposed to start begging for money. And when that fails, Oliver and the Artful Dodger pick your pocket. So put your money and your passport down the back of your underwear or something equally unworkable when you’re dealing with Customs.
That little gem was actually written in the margins of the travel book. By my mother. So I wouldn’t forget to keep it in my pants. “Simon, don’t forget about the criminal young people. Keep it all in your underpants.”
So standing here looking like I’m waiting (and waiting and waiting), I’m an easy target. But as my t-shirt says, I’m from Brooklyn. We do not pay people to tell us where we are and which line to stand in. It’s a matter of pride. Unbelievable. Being from Brooklyn, I understand trains. I can find my way around any train station in the world. Hubris! But it’s true. Even in foreign alphabets. It’s in my blood, it’s in the East River, it’s in the soot-flecked air we New Yorkers are born breathing.
So here I am in the Naples train station with my underwear full of credit cards, IDs, and my emergency contacts laminated in both English and Italian. And now I also have that hot tingling in my eyes and the slight burn in my sinuses that threaten angry tears again.
I’m supposed to see a little old man with a big old mercedes, holding up a sign saying “Simon Lewis.” His name is Giuseppe and he came very highly rated on travelbookie.com. Very highly rated.
So, ok, ummm- This guy is definitely not Giuseppe. He doesn’t look that much older than I am. He’s an awfully chatty Irishman named Billy. So I’m like, “What’s Billy in Italian?”
“Fuck if I know,” he laughs. “They just say Beelee. Which puts me off every time, if I’m honest. God bless ‘em, they’re beautiful people, right, but Beelee is so wrong.”
“What’s your last name?”
“Delaney.”
“So in Italian, you’re Beelee Day-la-nay.”
“Y’speak Italian then, do yeh?” he laughs.
“Fluently. This app taught me how to say ‘dog’ and ‘blouse’ and I leveled up really fast — one of my great talents, by the way.”
“Leveling up, is it? Or Italian?”
“Italian. Certo. That means ‘certainly,’ but you use it kind of like you would use ‘obviously.’ Why is it pronounced ‘chair toe?’ No seriously, I’m asking.”
“Obviously,” he snorts, ignoring my lingual curiosity. “Are you mansplainin the language of the place I live to me?”
“Certo.”
Billy rewards me with a low chuckle. It may have been low and just a chuckle, but it was real. Being a connoisseur and collector of bad puns and dad jokes, I have a finely tuned ear for real laughter, as opposed to the usual laughing-just-to-be-nice.
“So I’m better off with Beelee Daylanay. I’ll have a talk with my boss and ask him to use my full name or nothin at all.” That at least gets a snort out of me. Until he says, “What about you? Are you lookin forward to bein Seemon? Sorry, mate. I think yours might be worse than mine.”
———/-/———
We’ve been talking all this time and I forgot to look out the window. As if I’m not on my dream vacation. Runner-up, actually. I’m holding my best dream vacation (Venice) for when Ms. I Do Lewis actually says, “I do.” And I will not book the rooms til after she does.
“Sorry, what was that?” I’ve been staring into space and ignoring Mr. Daylanay, who is now looking at me funny in the rear view mirror.
“Nothin important. Where’d you go, mate?”
“New York to Frankfurt to Milan to Naples. I flew out of JFK.”
“I’ll pretend to know where that is. No,” he says, “I meant just now. You disappeared behind your face.”
Um… “I did what?”
“I’ve been the only one enjoyin the sound of my voice, apparently, since you went quiet about five minutes ago. So where’d you go? Back behind your face,” he prompts.
“That’s an awfully private question, Mr. Daylanay. I’m not sure we’re good enough friends for letting you behind my face.” I kinda stumble on the word friends, cuz, well, we’re not.
“What. Is that like bein let in to visit the little man behind the curtain? That sounds a bit-”
“Yeah, yeah, I know how it sounds.” I make sure to roll my eyes loudly so he can hear. My mother always says she can hear my eyes rolling from the next room.
“Cagey one, aren’t ya?”
“Nosey, intrusive one, aren’t ya?” I counter.
He bobs his head and gives me a simple, “Ok.”
And now it’s gone quiet. I decide to disappear behind my face again for a while. I quite like it there. Maybe one day the whole world will join me. (Obscure movie reference, don’t bother.)
“Does she have a name?” he breaks into my sinking mood.
“What- Why?”
“Well, Seemon, because every story worth tellin about people generally has a name or two in it. Unless yer feelin all avant-garde while you're busy behind your face, contemplatin. Things.”
Ok, now I’m starting to get tired of his persistence. “I like to think of her as She Who Shall Not Be Named.”
“Like Voldemort. In a nighty.”
The bark of a laugh just erupts out of me before I can stop it from encouraging him. “That is the most disturbing image I’ve ever had.” My dull ache of a mood evaporates as quickly as it came, uninvited and unwelcome on this trip.
“You’re off the hook for now, but if I see you again, I’ll want to hear more about Ms. She Who Shall Not Be Named.”
And just like that, I’m annoyed again. “No.”
“Ok,” he says again.
———/-/———
While apparently spending more time behind my face, I realize I’ve ignored over 45 minutes of the view in a foreign country. Again I’m annoyed. Isn’t he supposed to be narrating the countryside or something? Giuseppe would be narrating the countryside. I frickin paid for that narration.
“So what am I looking at?” I lob at him.
“Naples.”
“Funny.” I hope he can hear my eyes rolling.
“Hold up, I haven’t finished! That great U-shape, right, that’s the Bay of Naples. The city herself is over there in the distance, all the way at the far end of the bay. All the wee towns strung out and all bunched up against the sea as tight as can be sketch out the shape of the bay and on along to the Sorrentine Peninsula -- where we’re goin. The big blue bit beyond the bay-”
“Is the Mediterranean. Yeah, I got that much.”
“Nah, mate. You don’t. See, it’s the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is just the part of the Mediterranean between the boot of Italy and Spain.”
“Thanks so much for the oceanography lesson.”
“Bit tetchy, aren’t yeh?” he says, eyeing me in the rearview mirror. “Look, mate. I’m sorry if I rubbed ye up the wrong way with makin conversation. I’m just not used to fillin in on the guest delivery service. That’s a specific kind of hospitality. Mine might be a bit more suited to conversatin across a bar. In that situation, all of this would have been charming.”
I can see him smiling at me in the rearview, trying to reset the mood.
“So you’re a bartender, not a driver. But you do work at the hotel. Right? Or…”
“Yeah sure’n I’ve been known to fill in at the bar when I’m needed.” He clarifies, “Acourse it’s the height of the high season, and all the staff are absolutely inundated with guests. It’s a busy kitchen, and no mistake.”
“So you’re not a bar-”
“Aaaaand, here we are,” he declares, pulling off the road going way too fast into what appears to be open air. But when I don’t feel us driving off a cliff, I open my eyes to see an ornate iron gate, a tile roof, a million flowering bushes, and more than one fountain.
“Allow me to be the first to welcome yeh to the Hotel Terrazze di Limoni. I’ll just fetch your bags, shall I?”

Terminal 3's Sleeping Pods: Where Comfort Meets Convenience
Introduction
Travelling can be an exhausting experience, especially when faced with long layovers. Terminal 3 at Delhi Airport offers a unique solution to this problem: sleeping pods. These pods provide travellers with a comfortable and convenient resting place, transforming layovers from a hassle into a relaxing break. As a satisfied customer of TransitPodServices, I can attest to the quality and comfort these sleeping pods offer.
The Need for Sleeping Pods
Long layovers often leave travellers tired and uncomfortable, with few options for quality rest. Sleeping on airport benches or floors is far from ideal, and finding a comfortable, relaxing place can be challenging. This is where sleeping pods come in. They provide a private, quiet, and cosy space to rest, making layovers much more bearable.
Location and Accessibility
The sleeping pods are conveniently located within Terminal 3, making them easily accessible for travellers. Signs are well-placed throughout the terminal, guiding you to the pods quickly. You'll find the pods easily if you arrive from an international or domestic flight.
Booking and Pricing
Booking a sleeping pod is straightforward. You can reserve a pod online through the TransitPodServices website or at the airport. The pricing is reasonable, with options to book by the hour or for an extended period. There are various packages available, catering to different needs and budgets and sleeping pods at terminal 3
First Impressions
Upon arriving at the sleeping pod area, I was immediately impressed by the clean and modern design. The check-in process was quick and efficient, with friendly staff ready to assist. My initial thoughts were positive, and I was eager to experience the comfort promised by these pods.
Pod Features and Comfort
The sleeping pods are designed with the traveller's comfort in mind. Each pod includes a cosy bed with fresh linens, a soft pillow, and temperature controls to create the perfect sleeping environment. The pods are also equipped with a reading light, a mirror, and ample space for luggage. Privacy is ensured with a sliding door, and security features like personal lockers provide peace of mind.
Facilities and Amenities
In addition to the basic features, the sleeping pods offer several amenities to enhance your stay. Complimentary Wi-Fi allows you to stay connected or catch up on work. Each pod also has charging ports for your electronic devices, ensuring they are ready for the next leg of your journey. Some pods even come with a small desk, perfect for business travellers needing a workspace.
Hygiene and Cleanliness
Hygiene is a top priority for TransitPodServices. After each use, the pods are thoroughly cleaned, and fresh linens are provided for every new guest. During my stay, I found the pod spotless and well-maintained, reflecting the high standards of cleanliness upheld by the service.
Customer Service Experience
The staff at TransitPodServices were exceptional. They were courteous, attentive, and always ready to help with queries or concerns. Their professionalism and friendliness added to the overall positive experience, making me feel well cared for.
Sleep Quality
My sleep experience in the pod was excellent. The bed was comfortable, and the temperature was just right. Despite being in a busy airport, the pod was remarkably quiet, giving me a restful sleep. The noise insulation worked well, and I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to continue my journey.
Convenience for Travelers
The sleeping pods cater to a wide range of travellers. Business travellers will appreciate the workspace and connectivity options, while families can benefit from the comfort and privacy. Solo travellers like myself will find the pods to be a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the airport.
Comparing Alternatives
Sleeping pods offer a unique blend of affordability, convenience, and comfort compared to other resting options at the airport, such as lounges or nearby hotels. Lounges can be crowded, and hotels often require a long trek through the airport. Sleeping pods, however, are conveniently located and provide a private space tailored to individual needs.

My Thrilling Solo Adventure to Africa
Embarking on a solo trip can be one of the most exhilarating experiences of a lifetime, and my recent journey to Africa was no exception. From the vibrant cities to the awe-inspiring landscapes and diverse wildlife, Africa offered a solo adventure filled with excitement and unforgettable moments. Here’s a glimpse into my thrilling solo trip to Africa.
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi and Journey to Lake Nakuru
My adventure began in Nairobi, where I arrived early in the morning. After a hearty breakfast, I departed for Lake Nakuru with a brief stopover at the Great Rift Valley. The breathtaking views of the valley were a perfect introduction to the natural beauty of Kenya. By lunchtime, I arrived at Lake Nakuru Lodge, where a delicious meal awaited me. In the afternoon, I embarked on my first game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is renowned for its millions of flamingos, white rhinos, Rothschild giraffes, and a plethora of other wildlife. The sight of the flamingos painting the lake pink was truly mesmerizing. I returned to the lodge for a delightful dinner and a restful night.
Day 2: Departure to Maasai Mara
After breakfast, I departed Nakuru for the famous Maasai Mara. The journey included another brief stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint, offering more spectacular vistas. I arrived at the Mara Sentrim Lodge just in time for lunch. The afternoon game drive was an unforgettable experience, showcasing the rich diversity of wildlife in the Mara. Dinner at the lodge was a perfect end to an adventurous day, followed by a comfortable night’s rest.
Day 3: Full Day in Maasai Mara
The third day was dedicated to a full-day game drive in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. This was an incredible opportunity to witness the Great Migration of wildebeest and encounter the "Big Five" – lions, buffaloes, leopards, elephants, and rhinos. The vast savannahs teeming with wildlife were a sight to behold. I returned to Mara Sentrim Lodge for dinner, reliving the day's highlights.
Day 4: Exploring Maasai Mara and Cultural Encounter
Another day in the Maasai Mara began with an early breakfast followed by a full-day game drive. In the evening, I visited a Maasai village to experience their traditional way of life. The Maasai people welcomed me warmly, sharing their customs and vibrant culture. Dinner and overnight at the Mara Sentrim Lodge capped off another fantastic day.
Day 5: Return to Nairobi
On the final day, I enjoyed breakfast before checking out of the lodge. Departing the Mara, I headed back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon. I was dropped off at the airport for my international flight, marking the end of an unforgettable solo adventure in Africa.
This trip was a perfect blend of wildlife exploration, cultural experiences, and breathtaking landscapes. Traveling solo allowed me to fully immerse myself in the beauty and wonders of Africa, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Listed: Aaron Dooley
Aaron Dooley is a bass player and composer, originally from Illinois but now living in Denver, Colorado. He has played in many different bands in a diverse array of genres, including the garage-psych Gay Neighbors, shoegaze-y Totem Pocket and neo-soul Dog Tags, but more recently has dipped into improvisation and jazz. Jennifer Kelly reviewed his most recent album, The International Disassociation of, noting that “This second outing of 2023 from Aaron Dooley’s seven-piece jazz ensemble shimmers and shifts, an indefinite haze of sound breaking, sporadically, for clear flights of melody. Dooley, a bass player out of Denver, plunks a subtle, unsettling undertow, allowing other instruments — pedal steel, saxophone, even drums — to slip to the forefront. All improvised, these cuts absorb multiple points of view into free-flowing inquiry, not muddying them, but softening the edges.” Here are ten of Dooley’s favorites.
Yusef Lateef — Cry! Tender
youtube
Around age 16, this was probably the first record I ever bought (thanks North Street Records), let alone the first jazz that ever gripped me. Something about the smooth-looking bald guy with a flute on the cover grabbed me, but the sounds coming from the platter kept me coming back again and again. Songs like “Dopolous” sway along with such eerie elegance that even the swing rhythms feel like a somber march. A fun tidbit, Ernie Farrow, Alice Coltrane’s half-brother, is playing bass on the album.
Shlohmo — Shlo-Fi E.P.
youtube
I remember my friend Jacob Dilley hipping me to Shlohmo one Sunday morning. It was better than church. I hadn’t ever heard anything quite like it before. Beats, samples, found sounds arranged in a way that was almost spiritual. A lifelong Shlohmo fan, I’m happy to see his sound and career evolve, but those first Shlohmo releases between 2009 and 2011 sounded like treasure unearthed from the concrete. Probably the first artist to open the door to my love for non-lyrical music.
John Frusciante — Shadows Collide With People
youtube
That’s right hipsters, it’s the guy from Red Hot Chili Peppers. And Flea and Chad Smith are the backing band. But Anthony Keidis is nowhere to be found, so some might argue it’s the best RHCP album there is. I could give a whole dissertation on this album, but basically, it was a great healing force when it came into my life, and made me aware and appreciative of sounds that would lead me to where I am today.
Herbcraft — The Astral Body Electric
youtube
I believe it was September 1st, 2015, that Matt LaJoie played at Reverberation Vinyl. Herbcraft’s performance was inspiring and transcendent to say the least. I’ve loved everything Matt has put out, but those early Herbcraft records hold a special place in my heart. Before that point, I don't think I had any actual awareness of the country’s underground psych scene, but everything came full circle when I had the honor to play with Matt at Reverberation Vinyl this last May.
Jaco Pastorius — Solo
youtube
Every electric bass player owes something to Jaco. The heaviest bass nerds could go on for days about all the doors he opened (or kicked free from the hinges), but for me this particular solo encapsulates everything I like about Jaco as a player: running the bass through chorus and delay/reverb to create otherworldly tones with harmonics, riding the line between melody and the abstract, and grooving into a rock song like “Third Stone From the Sun.” When I saw this in like 2008, I realized jazz and rock were perhaps more similar than I had once thought. Also, my love for harmonics was sealed forever.
Shigeto — No Better Time Than Now
youtube
This is a strong contender for my desert island album. I don’t think Shigeto (Zachary Saginaw) has gotten the love he deserves for his approaches to music making like many of his contemporaries. The way the live instruments, his drumming in particular, blend with the electronic automations to create a sound that threads beautifully between genres. Electric perfection.
Primal Scream — Swastika Eyes (Jagz Kooner Mix)
youtube
For the last few years, I’d probably say Primal Scream has been my favorite band. Far beyond Screamadelica, the whole Primal Scream discography hits a lot of zones I’ve considered my favorites throughout the years. Bobby Gillespe has always seemed to be politically well-minded, and the way his laid-back delivery blends with noise rock onslaughts and sweaty club pulsations really does it for me. Whether folks want to admit it or not, I hear a lot of their influence in what’s happened musically over the last 15 years.
Ron Miles — Circuit Rider (2015-06-29) Monument National
youtube
I had the honor of studying with Ron Miles for a year or so during my time at MSU Denver. Brief as it was, I am forever grateful for it. I owe it to Ron for giving me the confidence to record the Trapped in Purgatory album and I am disappointed that he passed before its release. He seemed to respect my knack for music history and the last time I saw him, he asked me where he should start with krautrock. I hope he went home and checked out some CAN that night.
Gimo
A well of infinite talent and spirit and forever on the right-side of history, I can’t really find the words to properly express the influence Gimo has had on my life. They’ve given me more love than I deserve, and I don’t know how to adequately state the influence they’ve had on me. The most incredible artist, they did the cover of my Dooley Noted album, and are currently tattooing at Wild Wind Tattoo in Chicago. Find them on IG @i_am_gimo and book a tattoo appointment with them if you're in Chicago; you won’t regret it!
John Anderson, Reverberation Vinyl
The mentor. The influencer. The psychedelic stepdad. It’s hard to state the love and respect I’ve got for John. I wouldn’t be doing what I am musically without his guidance. He’s turned me on to quite a bit of good tunes and has gotten me to go across the country more than once for a music pilgrimage. Not including the numerous heads John’s brough to his store, Reverberation Vinyl, I owe much of my connection to the country’s music underground to his networking. Hope I can continue to make you proud, buddy.

10 Tips to Make Flying With Little Ones Less Stressful This Christmas
Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a first-time flyer, navigating the skies with a baby in tow is no small feat. The worries about finding the best travel bag, unpredictable diaper emergencies, milk storage, and passengers disgruntled by audible meltdowns are completely understandable and, frankly, shared by many. While I can't promise a turbulent-free journey, I can provide you with tips and tricks to make the voyage far less stressful - courtesy of a fellow parent who's been there and done that. (Side note: Babies are going to cry, and more often than not, flight attendants and even fellow passengers are going to be understanding of that.) Before my son turned 1, we embarked on not one, but two long-haul international flights and a handful of domestic ones. (If only more airlines offered child-free zones, like this one.) The stress and anxiety over how to manage it all was overwhelming on our first go-around, but I can assure you that with the proper planning, it's far more manageable than you think. Each journey presented its unique set of challenges, but we made it through - and you can too. Below are 10 tried-and-true tips for a stress-free flight with a baby. 1. Book a Flight That Works Best With Your Baby's Schedule (If You Can) The biggest mistake I ever made was booking a red-eye flight. I shared the common thinking that my child would sleep the entire duration of the flight, but what I didn't take into consideration was the novelty of the airplane and all the overstimulation that came with it. The new environment, coupled with pilot announcements, cabin lights, and passenger conversations, could easily keep your little one wide awake and disrupt their sleep schedule and routine. The key is to plan according to your child's needs, whether that's during normal sleep hours or awake windows. 2. Reserve the Bassinet Seats Did you know most airplanes offer bassinet seats that attach to the bulkhead wall? Available between takeoff and landing, the bassinets are assembled by the flight attendant and provide the perfect hands-free option for baby naps and play. The key is to reserve your seats ahead of time since these rows offer more legroom and are highly sought-after by solo travelers. Get ahead of the game and book for an optimal flight experience with your little one. 3. Get to the Airport Early (and I Mean Early, Early) Even with everything perfectly packed and the family seemingly ready to go, there are certain scenarios that you simply can't account for (and therefore should account for). When you're mapping out your travel day, account for the extra time needed to arrange bottles, feed your baby, change diapers, change clothes, take the elevator (because of the stroller), and get from point A to point B with countless stops along the way. You'll be a lot less stressed if you're not in a rush. 4. Simplify Your Carry-Ons and Opt For a Mini Crossbody Bag Minimize the number of heavy carry-ons, and simplify your packing to include only the essentials. Opt for a crossbody bag or fanny pack to keep your passport, ID, boarding pass, wallet, and phone easily accessible. Your diaper bag should carry everything you need for a smooth journey and can conveniently rest on or under the stroller as you move through the airport. Pack in Advance and Organize with Packing Cubes Efficient packing is the foundation of a stress-free travel experience. The last thing you need is to rush out the door and realize you've left behind an essential item. To avoid this, start packing well in advance, systematically checking items off your list to ensure everything is packed correctly. How do I make a solo trip itinerary?
Creating a solo trip itinerary involves careful planning and consideration of your interests, the duration of your trip, and the destination you're visiting. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you make your solo trip itinerary:
Research your destination: Start by gathering information about your chosen destination. Learn about its top attractions, landmarks, cultural sites, outdoor activities, and local events. Consider factors such as weather, safety, and visa requirements.
Determine the duration of your trip: Decide how long you'll be traveling. This will help you allocate time for each activity and destination on your itinerary. Be realistic about the number of days you have and consider travel time between locations.
Prioritize your interests: Identify the activities and experiences that align with your interests and goals for the trip. Do you enjoy history, adventure, food, or nature? Make a list of must-see attractions and experiences, and rank them based on importance.
Allocate time for each location: Divide your trip into segments, and allocate a suitable amount of time for each location. Consider the travel time required to reach each destination and ensure you have enough time to explore and enjoy each place.
Plan your daily activities: Break down each day of your trip and outline the activities you'll do. Start with the main attraction or activity for the day, and then add secondary activities or sights that you want to visit. Be realistic about the time it takes to explore each location.
Be flexible and leave room for spontaneity: While it's important to have a well-planned itinerary, allow some flexibility in your schedule. Leave room for unexpected discoveries, recommendations from locals, or simply taking a break to relax and enjoy the destination.
Consider logistics and travel time: Take into account the time required to travel between different locations. Research transportation options, such as flights, trains, buses, or ferries. Check schedules and factor in any potential delays or travel restrictions.
Check opening hours and availability: Ensure that the attractions or activities you want to visit are open during your travel dates. Some places may have limited hours or be closed on certain days. Make reservations in advance if necessary, especially for popular sites or guided tours.
Stay organized: Use a digital or physical calendar, spreadsheet, or itinerary planning tool to keep track of your daily activities, accommodation details, transportation bookings, and important contact information. Have a backup copy accessible offline, such as a printed copy or saved offline on your phone.
Review and refine your itinerary: Once you have a draft itinerary, review it to ensure it aligns with your preferences, time constraints, and feasibility. Make adjustments as needed, and seek input from fellow travelers or locals who have been to your destination.
Remember that your itinerary is a guide, not a strict schedule. Allow for flexibility and spontaneity during your solo trip, as some of the best experiences often happen unexpectedly. Adapt your plans as you go and make the most of your adventure!
How many days is enough for a solo trip?
The ideal duration for a solo trip depends on various factors, including your destination, budget, available time, and personal preferences. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, as some people may prefer shorter trips while others enjoy longer adventures. However, here are a few considerations to help you determine how many days might be enough for your solo trip:
Destination: The location you plan to visit plays a significant role in determining the ideal duration. Some destinations, such as small cities or specific attractions, can be explored in just a few days. Others, like large countries or regions with diverse landscapes and cultural experiences, may require more time to fully immerse yourself.
Interests and Activities: Consider the activities and experiences you wish to pursue during your trip. If you have specific interests like hiking, diving, or exploring museums, you may need to allocate extra time. Additionally, if you want to participate in local events, festivals, or specific tours, make sure your itinerary allows for those activities.
Travel Pace: Consider your preferred travel pace and style. Do you like to spend ample time in each location, thoroughly exploring and absorbing the local culture? Or do you prefer a faster pace, seeing more destinations but with less time spent in each? Tailor your itinerary to match your desired travel pace.
Time Constraints: Evaluate the amount of time you have available for your trip. If you have a limited number of vacation days, you might need to plan a shorter trip. On the other hand, if you have more flexibility and can take an extended break, you can consider a longer duration.
Budget: Your budget can also influence the length of your solo trip. Longer trips typically require more funds for accommodation, transportation, meals, and activities. Assess your financial situation and plan a trip that aligns with your budget.
In general, a solo trip of at least a few days is recommended to fully immerse yourself in the experience and have time for exploration. However, it's essential to strike a balance between the duration of your trip and the resources you have available. Remember, even a short solo trip can provide valuable experiences and memories. It's better to have a shorter trip that fits within your means than to forgo the opportunity altogether.
