BEST DIRECTORS IN CINEMA-3
Hi everyone! This blog is going to be the 3rd part of 8 Part Series of who I think are the Best Directors Cinema as ever seen
And today I will be talking about
SATYAJIT RAY
Satyajit Ray (born May 2, 1921, Calcutta [now Kolkata], India—died April 23, 1992, Calcutta) was a Bengali motion-picture director, writer, and illustrator who brought the Indian cinema to world recognition with Pather Panchali (1955; The Song of the Road) and its two sequels, known as the Apu Trilogy. As a director, Ray was noted for his humanism, his versatility, and his detailed control over his films and their music. He was one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.
(Early Life)
Ray was an only child whose father died in 1923. His grandfather was a writer and illustrator, and his father, Sukumar Ray, was a writer and illustrator of Bengali nonsense verse. Ray grew up in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and was looked after by his mother. He entered a government school, where he was taught chiefly in Bengali, and then studied at Presidency College, Calcutta’s leading college, where he was taught in English. By the time he graduated in 1940, he was fluent in both languages. In 1940 his mother persuaded him to attend art school at Santiniketan, Rabindranath Tagore’s rural university northwest of Calcutta. There Ray, whose interests had been exclusively urban and Western-oriented, was exposed to Indian and other Eastern art and gained a deeper appreciation of both Eastern and Western culture, a harmonious combination that is evident in his films.
(His Famous Works)
Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955) won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. This film, along with Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) (1959), form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. He also authored several short stories and novels, primarily for young children and teenagers. Popular characters created by Ray include Feluda the sleuth, Professor Shonku the scientist, Tarini Khuro the storyteller, and Lalmohan Ganguly the novelist.
(Filmmaking Style)
His Filmmaking
Ray had been subconsciously paying a tribute to Jean Renoir throughout his career, who influenced him the most.Ray considered script-writing to be an integral part of direction. Initially he refused to make a film in any language other than Bengali. In his two non-Bengali feature films, he wrote the script in English; translators adapted it into Hindustani under Ray's supervision. The narrative structure of Ray's films are represented by musical forms such as sonata, fugue and rondo. Kanchenjunga, Nayak and Aranyer Din Ratri are examples of this structure.
(His Filmography)
Ray made over 36 feature film in his 4 decade long. He made movies such as Pather Panchali in 1955,Aparajito in 1956,Parash Pathar and Jalsaghar in 1958, Apur Sansar in 1959, Devi in 1960. He made movies such as Teen Kanya in 1961, Kanchenjungha and Abhijan in 1962,Mahanagar in 1963,Charulata and Two I'm 1964,Kapurush-0-Mahapurush in 1965,Nayak in 1966,Chiriyakhana in 1967,Goopy Gyne & Bagha Byne in 1969,Aranyer Din Ratri and Pratiwandi in 1970, Seemabaddha and Sikkim in 1971,Inner Eyes in 1972,Ashani Sanket in 1973,Sonar Kella in 1974,Jana Aranyw in 1975,Bala in 1976,Shatranj ka Khilari in 1977,Joi Baba Felunath in 1979,Hirak Rajar Deshe and Pikoo in 1980,Sadgati in 1981,Ghare Bhare in 1984,Sukumar Ray in 1987,Ganashatru and Shakha Proshakha in 1990,Agantuk in 1990.

(Awards & Honors)
Ray received many awards including 36 National Film Awards. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1985 and Legion Of Honor in 1987. The Government of India also awarded him with Padma Bhusan in 1965. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992 at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. He also won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival
(Legacy)
Ray is considered one of the greatest film directors of all time. He is a cultural icon in India and in Bengali communities worldwide. Following his death, the city of Calcutta came to a virtual standstill, as hundreds of thousands of people gathered around his house to pay their last respects. Ray's influence has been widespread and deep in Bengali cinema; many Bengali directors, including Aparna Sen, Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghose as well as Vishal Bhardwaj, Dibakar Banerjee, Shyam Benegal and Sujoy Ghosh from Hindi cinema in India, Tareq Masud and Tanvir Mokammel in Bangladesh, and Aneel Ahmad in England, have been influenced by his craft.Beyond India, filmmakers Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, James Ivory, Abbas Kiarostami, Elia Kazan, William Wyler,François Truffaut, John Huston, Carlos Saura, Isao Takahata, Oliver Stone,Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson,Danny Boyle and Christopher Nolan.

The Toucan Kings (above)promises audiences a raucous good time with an 80s-inspired variety show packed with iconic tunes, slick dance moves, and endless laughs.
“It will be a wild and unforgettable ride,” said host and Ultimate Showdown 2024 Finalist, York Lit.
Cheer along to this award-winning motley crew including Lord Sev, Will Turn-Her, Collin Oscopy and Logan’s own Archie Arsenic.

We live in terrifying times. Dispatches of wars, disasters, and crises circulate with unceasing regularity and ease, while an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness underscores an ever more incomprehensible world at odds with its own logic. The impossible has become possible. Reality is stranger than fiction. The tenth edition of Creamcake’s 3hd, with its title “The Shadows That Linger,” probes this uncanny realm where the ordinary becomes strange in an “always-already” defined by digital technology, nostalgia, and deterritorialization. Wading deep into this hauntological space between the familiar and the unfamiliar from October 19 to November 2, the festival will examine the spiritual and the ghostly, the ambiguous and the uncertain, alongside those historical, political, cultural, and social relics and reverberations that continue to affect us all.
The interdisciplinary program aims to open up to the political potential of discomfort. In experiencing and engaging with the alien and the otherworldly, “The Shadows That Linger” will spend the present working through the specters of the past in an attempt to transform dread into a drive for a better future. The three-weekend program awakens at RSO (from the team behind the iconic Griessmuehle) with another one of Creamcake and 3hd’s typically epic club takeovers from DJs and live acts like cult electronic music duo Bassvictim, and producer and purveyor of wide-screen melancholia DJH, as well as object blue, Softmatter, and many more. A moving-image program will run alongside the festival at Berlinische Galerie and online at 3hdTV through to November 18 with films by the likes of Abdessamad El Montassir and Micaela Durand & Daniel Chew, among others, exploring themes of death, loss, and the omnipresent digital, physical, and spiritual architectures that haunt our everyday lives.
HAU Hebbel am Ufer hosts the Berlin debut of Goodnight Sweet Thing, a performance art piece directed by Cristine Brache & Sigrid Lauren that invites audiences to reflect on the complexities of masking and societal performance in a philosophical exploration of the human condition. The Betonhalle addition to Silent Green Kulturquartier’s repurposed crematorium complex will host two nights of music and live performance, ritual and ceremony. Here, Oxhy and Susu Laroche’s The Fertile Crescent distill their distinct musical universes into folkloric anthems evocative of ancient time zones and mystic drone metal, while Yawning Portal guides its listeners through “an opening to other worlds, a transmutation, a prayer.” Meanwhile, acclaimed artist Ebecho Muslimova applies her distinctive drawing style to the visual identity of 3hd 2024 by lending her Fatebe alter-ego, and her unsettling, self-conscious, and surreal aesthetic to the cosmic club cubicle of this “The Shadows That Linger” edition.
A decade since its inauguration, the concerns raised in 3hd 2015’s “The Labor of Sound in a World of Debt” seem almost trite compared to the sheer scale and impact of today’s cultural flux, social disparity, and environmental degradation, and the mass violence, destruction, and suffering that continues to unfold globally. Perhaps it’s worth reflecting on this seemingly simpler past as part of a circuitous chain of events leading to the present, while remembering that chains can be broken and shadows do fade.

Sun, Silver Screens, and Stardom: A Look at Cannes' History and Allure for Film Festivals
Sun, Silver Screens, and Stardom: A Look at Cannes' History and Allure for Film Festivals Cannes, nestled along the sparkling French Riviera, evokes images of red carpets, glamorous celebrities, and cinematic masterpieces. But the allure of Cannes as a global center for film extends far beyond its contemporary glitz. Unveiling the city's rich history and the factors that make it the perfect stage for prestigious film festivals like Cannes unlocks the magic behind this annual cinematic spectacle. From Humble Beginnings to Festival Hub: A Riviera Town's Transformation Cannes' story as a film festival destination has its roots in the pre-war era. In the 1930s, several European countries, including Italy, boasted established film festivals. France, however, lacked a similar platform to showcase its burgeoning cinematic talent. This desire to compete with Italy's Venice Film Festival is largely credited with the birth of the Cannes Film Festival. The inaugural edition, however, was marred by World War II. Following the war's conclusion, the French government, along with film professionals, revived the festival in 1946. The idyllic setting of Cannes, bathed in sunshine and boasting a burgeoning tourist industry, proved to be a perfect choice. Luxury hotels provided opulent accommodation for celebrities, while the picturesque beaches offered a glamorous backdrop for the event. The Palais des Festivals: A Stage Fit for Silver Screen Dreams The creation of a dedicated venue specifically designed for the festival further solidified Cannes' position as a film hub. The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, inaugurated in 1941, became the heart of the festival. This grand structure, overlooking the azure Mediterranean, housed screening rooms, exhibition spaces, and red-carpeted walkways – everything needed to elevate the festival experience. Beyond Location: Fostering Collaboration and Cultural Exchange Cannes' appeal goes beyond its idyllic setting and luxurious amenities. The festival has a long-standing tradition of promoting international collaboration within the film industry. It provides a platform for filmmakers from across the globe to showcase their work, fostering cultural exchange and artistic dialogue. The prestigious Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor, is a coveted prize, attracting international submissions and ensuring a diverse array of films compete for recognition. The Star Power Factor: Cannes and the Glamour of Celebrity Culture The presence of A-list celebrities adds another layer to Cannes' allure. The festival attracts renowned actors, directors, and industry personalities, transforming the event into a star-studded spectacle. The red carpet arrivals, the dazzling outfits, and the paparazzi frenzy create a media circus that amplifies the festival's global reach and generates immense publicity for the films in competition. Economic Impact: A Boon for Tourism and International Recognition The Cannes Film Festival is not just a cultural event; it's a significant economic driver for the region. The influx of tourists, filmmakers, and media personnel generates substantial revenue for the city's hotels, restaurants, and luxury businesses. Furthermore, the global media attention shines a spotlight on Cannes, promoting it as a premier tourist destination. A Legacy of Cinematic Excellence: Cannes and the Future of Film Over the decades, the Cannes Film Festival has established itself as a prestigious platform for launching the careers of filmmakers and propelling iconic movies into the global spotlight. From classics like "La Dolce Vita" to contemporary masterpieces like "Parasite," the festival has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of world cinema. Looking ahead, Cannes is likely to remain a coveted destination for film festivals. The city's commitment to cinematic excellence, its luxurious setting, and the star power it attracts all contribute to its enduring allure. As the world of cinema continues to evolve, Cannes will undoubtedly adapt and remain a stage where cinematic dreams are born, celebrated, and shared with the world. Read the full article

Bingeworthy: The Art & Craft Of Narrative Podcasts
The word "binge" has gone through numerous transformations over the last 50 years. At one time, it was used primarily as an adjective before "drinking" and "eating." The connotation of "binge" was negative.
Then "binge" suddenly became imbued with new meaning at the beginning of the 21st Century, and that negative stigma dissipated.
That's when Netflix began releasing a season of episodes for its original series on one day. Suddenly, a new meaning was born for "binge." Actually two. You could "Netflix and chill" and then "binge" an entire season in a day or a few days. Calling in sick to complete the media binge was acceptable.
Thankfully for podcasters, award-winning documentary filmmaker, narrative podcast producer and cultural critic Samantha Hodder added the term "binge" to podcasting.
Her Substack newsletter Bingeworthy is the mother ship for narrative podcast opinion, review, trends, and analysis. Hodder began the newsletter in September 2022 and has already amassed an impressive following.
You can subscribe to Bingeworthy here.Bingeworthy is a listener-supported newsletter. Here's how Hodder explained Bingeworthy: "Everyone knows that pickleball is not tennis, and it’s not badminton. Even if you’ve never played pickleball, you know not to bring a badminton racquet to that game. That’s because you know pickleball is its own sport, with its own rules…ones that are both similar and different to its neighboring sports. "I want the same thing for podcasts. But I want Bingeworthy to help us see narrative podcasts as their own thing. Not chatcasts. Not celeb gossip. Not short news segments. Narrative podcasts, or narrative audio, or narrative storytelling…whatever you want to call it…is its own thing. "And my goal with Bingeworthy is to help celebrate that thing. That space. Those stories, the people who make them, the craft that becomes them and the underlying industry that makes that all happen."
Samantha Hodder is called a multihypenate -- someone who does several different jobs in the entertainment industry—and does them well.
Samantha is an award-winning audio producer and writer. She has been making media across multiple formats for over two decades. She publishes regularly on Mediumand on Substack. Her narrative storytelling podcast This is Our Time launched in 2017. It is a memoir-based story about an all-women’s expedition to Antarctica for women. Season 2 was featured in the Hot Docs Podcast Festival in 2021. She works as a freelance podcast producer, editor and narration script advisor. This year, she began to teach and mentor students at TMU and OCADU in narrative podcasting.
She also works with other writers and creatives one-on-one to help them find a winning narrative structure for their projects. To see if this approach could be helpful to your work, find her free 5-day email course Find Your Fish, which draws on lessons from screenwriting, podcasting, journaling and mindful meditation.
Over the last two decades her writing has appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines and her interactive work has premiered at festivals internationally. She was the recipient of the Al Waxman Calling Card for her first documentary, The Mantelpiece, which was broadcast on TVOntario, and premiered at the Big Sky Documentary Festival in 2004. Her short film The Nothingness That Is Everything opened in Venice, Italy in 2018. So what kinds of articles are published in Bingeworthy?
We have the Bingeworthy's Top 23 narrative podcasts for 2023. As Hodder notes: "Carefully tracked, noted and measured, the inaugural Bingey List aims to highlight the best shows of the narrative podcast world and shine a light on an amazing body of work." Included in hr list is her # 2 (and my #1) Stolen: Surviving St. Michael's.
In her most recent newsletter post, Hodder discusses three podcasts she's listened to, including Ripple. Hodder notes: "Part environmental caper, part climate actuality doomsday report, part good old-fashioned door-knocking journalism. For those who think they recall the largest oil spill in North America, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill off the Gulf Coast of Alabama in 2010, but can’t exactly remember all the horrid details, this series is here to remind you." I have listened to this investigative podcast, and Hodder is prescient. The podcast is powerful in its observations, disturbing in its revelations, and insightful in its solutions.
Then Hodder interviews Claire Tighe about the freelancing, which is essentially employment without a net.
Check out Bingeworthy. It's custom-built for fans of narrative podcasting. Samantha Hodder is a superb journalist with a quick wit, an inviting writing style, and an innate sense of "bingeworthy" podcasts.
In summary, Bingeworthy offers reviews, critiques, insights, and discussions about the art and craft of narrative podcasts.
Hodder's goal is a noble one: "To bring narrative podcasts out from the fringe shadows; To make them a subject of critical discussion; To see them recognized as their own storytelling format."

ZIFF Film Festival: Celebrating African Cinema
A Cinematic Celebration Across Tanzania
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania. An exciting cultural collaboration will kick off on November 3, 2023, as the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) extends its reach to mainland Tanzania. This expansion, aptly named "ZIFF Goes Mainland 2023," is a joint effort by the Delegation of the European Union to Tanzania and the Embassies of Spain, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, France, Poland, Finland, Italy, and Sweden, to bring award-winning films from ZIFF and select European movies to audiences in Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, and Morogoro. Connecting Students to the World of Cinema Across various universities, students will have the unique opportunity to engage with the world of cinema. Award-winning films from ZIFF, along with select European movies, will grace the screens, offering students a glimpse into the rich tapestry of filmmaking techniques. Post-screening discussions will provide a platform for students to dissect and explore the art of filmmaking.
A Showcase of Cultural Diversity
The festival's inaugural night will feature the Tanzanian film "EONII," directed by a local talent. The event is set to be a celebration of homegrown creativity and storytelling. In addition to highlighting Tanzania's cinematic prowess, the festival will feature a selection of European films, emphasizing the rich cultural diversity of the participating countries. Notably, this year's lineup also demonstrates a gesture of solidarity, with Ukrainian films being added to the program amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Celebrating Excellence The 26th ZIFF edition showcased outstanding talent in filmmaking. Winning entries from South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and Tanzania will be on display during the festival, celebrating excellence from across the African continent. The festival will draw to a close on November 23rd with a special evening dedicated to Ukrainian cinema, reaffirming the power of film in fostering understanding and unity in challenging times.
Strengthening Cultural Ties
Martin Mhando, the outgoing CEO of ZIFF, emphasized the crucial role played by "#TeamEurope" in enhancing the festival's offerings. Their collaboration extends beyond this initiative, with past engagements encompassing support for training workshops, sponsorship of ZIFF programs, and the presentation of co-production opportunities. Fostering Growth and Inspiration Christine Grau, the EU Head of Delegation to Tanzania, highlighted Europe's significant contribution to ZIFF's growth and impact. The European Union's commitment goes beyond showcasing films; it includes supporting cultural stakeholders and establishing the infrastructure necessary for artists to thrive and inspire their communities. This approach reflects the European Union's dedication to nurturing the cultural arts in Tanzania. The grand unveiling of the ZIFF program took place on October 26th at the Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam. Representatives from the nine embassies attended, underlining their role in making this cultural convergence possible, highlighting the spirit of #TeamEurope, and promoting peace and understanding between Europe and Africa through cultural diplomacy.
