Field journal 📔
ID: Bidens mitis (I think!)
Common name: smallfruit beggarticks
🌼
The common name for this lovely yellow flower sounds a little unpleasant, but it simply comes from the fact that the small fruits are jagged and will cling to things that brush against the plant. At first glance, those fruits look like ticks. (Many related plants have some variation of “tickseed” or “beggartick” in their names.)
🌼
If you look around Florida, you can almost always find some in bloom at any time of the year (similarly to their smaller white relative, Bidens alba). This makes it a steady food source for lots of bugs–just check out slide 4 to see some of the insects that Bidens mitis attracts!
🌼
There are a lot of pretty yellow flowers in Florida, and I’m still learning how to tell them all apart. Some of the things I try to observe are size, number of petals, leaf shape and configuration, and of course what habitat they’re growing in. With that information, I turn to the following resources:
🔎My copy of @floridapress “Florida Wildflowers” book
🔎The accounts of plant people I follow online
🔎The ai tool and community input on @inaturalistorg
🔎Online resources from @floridanativeplantsociety and @flawildflowers

Found some honest to goodness WILD Staten Island Turkeys 🦃 today hanging out where they are supposed to be: in the woods! Welcomed them to the neighborhood and then went to get a closer look at the mystery sphere I first spotted earlier this week. I put my Seek @inaturalistorg app to work on it and for a millisecond it identified the sphere as a “gall wasp nest” — anyone know anything about that? I saw “wasp” and got out of Dodge. Quickly. #sigreenbelt #sigreenway #statenislandturkeys @siadvance the turkeys were on Park Drive North — we never see them over here! https://www.instagram.com/p/CqCTw0-so1L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Two male #anoles met in a lane, gaped impolitely and gaped again... then probably started swearing at each other in lizard 😄 Adult male green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) are highly territorial. They establish dominance through a set of ritualized displays - dramatically flaring crests and blackening the spots behind their eyes. If neither combatant retreats, they will fight by biting and interlocking their big gaping jaws. 📷 cfabian/@iNaturalistorg

When I went night tidepooling I kept seeing these crabs with pointed faces. I took photos and uploaded them to @inaturalistorg to figure out what they were. Turns out they are Northern Kelp Crabs! Of course I had to start drawing right away to add one to my collection.

Up close & personal with a
Corn Earworm Moth larva
How many times have you come across one of these little guys in your ear of corn? These are in fact Corn Earworm Moths in their larva state.
https://youtu.be/AtuiAq3d7ek
Up close & under with a Takmly digital microscope: 600 Lux Brightness, 1000x enlargement, 2,000,000 pixels and 1920*1080P resolution.
Facts: These larva is a major agricultural pest. They are cannibalistic and rarely will you find more then one per ear of corn and start from the tip and eat their way down the silking of the corn. After 3-4 weeks of feasting they’ll the larva will burrow down in the ground to pupate.
I hope you enjoyed this post and the ones that will follow up with to come of Up close & personal with…
Thank you for your time.

Field journal 📔
ID: Xyris sp.
Common name: Yellow-eyed grasses
🌼
Sometimes when I’m researching plants I find, my mind is blown by the astounding biodiversity we have here in Florida. The Florida Wildflowers guidebook that acts as my plant bible is pretty hefty and about as comprehensive as you could hope for, but even its 500+ pages can only hope to scratch the surface of all the wildflowers here in Florida.
🌼
This plant is a great example of this. An @inaturalistorg user pointed me in the right direction with the genus name Xyris. I looked in my guidebook and found only one species, Xyris caroliniana, which is white and definitely not the species I observed here. On the @usouthflorida online Atlas of Florida Plants, there were 25 species listed for this genus!
🌼
Looking at the range map for each of these species narrowed it down to 13 possibilities, but I wasn’t able to narrow it down further because I didn’t get photos of the plant’s foliage. Sometimes I get so starstruck by new flowers that I forget to document the rest of the plant, but I’m trying to do a better job at capturing more angles/parts of the plants I see on my adventures so I can have better information for researching what they are!
