okay very preliminary thoughts on mitski's new album BUT i think there's something with how "laurel hell" felt like a goodbye to the music industry (can't find the source but i remember reading that it was intended to be her last album under her contract) like i'm sorry anthony fantano but if you interpret the back half of "laurel hell" as being generic breakup songs you're missing like 80% of the context. to me TO ME it feels so clearly about her negotiating her relationship with fame, how she can't love her fans the way they love her, and how she feels like she sold her soul to her job, so the only thing to do is step away. but THEN "the land is inhospitable and so are we" was created after mitski decided to renegotiate her contract, specifically because she loved making music enough to deal with the negative aspects of the work. and then all the songs are about the ghost of love she can leave behind, despite the present pain or emptiness, and like. do you see it. do you see it.

#THE NARRATIVE.#beepbeep.txt #mitski #like you can definitely interpret everything through the lens of personal romantic relationships BUT. i think its even better #envisioning that she is speaking to her actual audience. the love they have for her and the love she is trying to communicate to them #i mean especially “i don't like my mind” just feels like a response to “love me more” where she begs to keep her job #specifically so she doesn't have to be alone with all these thoughts. so she can be witnessed #but then i feel like “the deal” and “when memories snow” are responses to “working for the knife” and “everyone” where her job leaves her #feeling emptied out of all this pain and love simultaneously. hence the ghostliness of the whole album #and her coming to terms with this feeling of emptiness. or actually. the loneliness of having no witnesses at all. after the music.#being king of her own land. if one would like to use that turn of phrase #IS ANYONE ELSE GOING INSANE OR.

once again i am saying spotify needs an incognito mode for wrapped. i think i should be able to cordon off the 80000 hours i spent listening to the taylor swift album because i was in the middle of writing 7000 words about it. i don't think that should count.

#i do love TTPD to the point that i've TTPD-pilled myself and now think it's objectively her best album #and renders basically everything but folklore and like 2-3 songs on some other albums irrelevant #(ok 5 songs on red)#and people arguing otherwise are crazy and also will agree with me in 10 years' time #AND ALSO. 2024 became the year i finally had the experience of #Wow Taylor Swift Released An Album Shockingly Keyed In To Challenges In My Personal Life #i did not have a break-up soundtracked by red like so many but this year... this year she and i were really Connected #so i mean it would have been high up anyway for sure #BUT STILL!!!!!!!!#anyway. not as annoying as the year i got rly into the succession & MI:Fallout scores for work purposes #which rendered my top 100 list basically unplayable

I bought myself some CDs :3

#five of them in fact. i have a collection of cds that i started in high school #and i've been making more of an effort to add to it lately with the decline of physical media #cds are so expensive now. like everything else. but it's worth it to me anyways #i did get two of them used so that brought the cost down a bit #but also! 3 of them have the little booklets with the tracklist and lyrics and extra art or photos #and another has a booklet that's just a ton of art the band commissioned for the album (or one of them did it themselves idk)#one doesn't have a booklet at all unfortunately and it's one that i bought new so it's not like it's missing they just didn't include one #which is too bad cause the one with all the art and the one with no booklet are by the same band so it would have been cool to see somethin #similar for the other album #still tho i'm quite pleased with my finds. i really love having physical cds #i'm certain one of them was the only cd from that artist in the entire store (huge place so much to look at i love going there)#her cds were completely sold out when i looked in the section they should have been in but i found ONE in the recent arrivals #they just keep all the cds they acquired within the last week in this one display organized only by the day they arrived #so i leafed thru the entire week's worth of cds and found this single album and it was such lovely serendipity #august talking

#not to beat a dead horse #but I don’t know how Taylor is as well-adjusted as she seems to be #because if I’d been through everything she went through last year #I’d want to throw up all the time lol #last year I clocked immediately what conman was doing #because my friend’s ex was the same #in a very similar situation #and then in the last few months I’ve tried to be less rash and open myself up to the idea #that they were just two fucked up people and he believed his own bullshit and thought it was real in the moment #but again after reading the thing I’m like ‘nah my first instincts were right he’s awful’#and that he did what he did with intent #and not only that but used her extreme vulnerability as an ‘in’#it’s so so so sick #if you’ve ever been or have watched a loved one be lovebombed and manipulated #it’s just such a specifically awful thing #anyway i don’t want to fly too close to the sun but Taylor is a better and stronger person than i could ever be lol #like there are reasons for things and it makes so many things that happened and on the album make so much sense #but alas #anyway!!!!!

i was in a really dark place before clancy came out in may... now i can genuinely say that i'm so fucking grateful for everything that happened ever since

having another one of those nights where i feel the need to deep dive research into the well-known but now-defunct punk rock club in boston that my mom's great-uncle/godfather was the doorman for in the 70's-80's

#last few times i did this it was mostly about tracking down the t-shirt with mitch (my family member)'s face on it but tht has been found #(both in digital version on the website of the guy who originally designed it and also the fact that my mom literally has one which #he specially signed to her and everything it's so cool its SO cool)#so this time im looking more into the music played there. there's a whole live album! several recordings of shows ppl have uploaded!#and theres a whole ass DOCUMENTARY on the place someone made thats on youtube. so im having a fun time #grandpa max is god? i go to church now

#glass animals #honestly i wore out dreamland sm my brain took a lonnng break from expecting anything from them?? idk i’m just huh????#like….. when i say wore out #i cannot describe how much i listened to it #i usually have some vague idea even if it’s a ridiculous number #like 52 times in a month for an album or something (has happened)#i cannot recall w this #gonna say bc 2020 & they were Literally the last band i saw live. next morning everyone found out about everything annd lockdown. no joke #so it was big dreamland time when it dropped and revisiting their past albums when i broke out of its spell lmao #(pretty sure before that like january was when i listened to déjà vu 100+ times in a row tho so oop. it was a tough day lol)#anyway seeing this aww man. i really have had this band with me for a long long time. 🥹 i remember hearing gooey on the radio one night #driving home from work late @ night in 2014. the drive was so short i couldn’t be arsed to fish out my ipod & plug it in #sometimes so just popped on a good station i had preset. started the car and heard this *voice* and i was like who????#had to check the station bc it was an alt station and i thought i had it on another one which was fine i was just v confused #it was in the middle of the song & i was immediately anxious to know the name hoping i’d hear it & it wouldn't just flow into the next song #then the dj would pile the names together after x number of songs played bc i was tiired (but woulda stayed in the car ngl). got lucky &#ran inside to find it then yelled at my roommate the next day that she HAD to listen to it during a smoke session after work #(i was right & it blew her miiind)#god. what a fucking time. what a fucking band. idk what the disc horse is surrounding them now since they blew up via tiktok #i’m sure people are v quick to say they’re overrated bc of that but idk & i’m glad i don’t know. they’ll always be this #highly inventive incredible band i stumbled upon for the perfect night drive home after a long long shift #a band that came back from a Horrible accident that should have ended 1 of their lives & somehow didn’t & should have ended them #as a band (like still cannot believe Joe was drumming in 2020 & i saw it with my own eyes like how tf???!?)#a band deserving of all of its successes. glass animals forever
