Oh, he’s stupid.
[DP x DC fic]
[Love at first... murder? - part 4]

Part 1
Ao3
---
“THAT CLOWN I PUNCHED WAS THE JOKER?!”
The frenzied question stuns Jason for a moment.
Oh. He realizes. He’s stupid.
...
Fuck, he wants to kiss him so bad.
Slightly incredulous, he manages to get out a question of his own in response.
“Just how many insane clowns do you think we have wandering around Gotham?”
“I don’t know, man! I’ve only been here for less than a week. And it’s Gotham, there’s a new rogue like every other week!”
Jason considers his point for a moment before conceding.
“… You know what? That’s fair.”
Danny slumps in his chair with a groan, his cheeks slightly dusted pink due to embarrassment. He puts his forehead on the table. Slightly worried, Jason speaks up.
“Are you alright?”
“Just peachy. Not even a week in a new city and I already managed to dispose of one of the city’s most infamous rogues, and I wasn’t even aware of it. Ugh, my sister’s gonna kill me. Fully this time.”
Right. Jason’s not gonna touch upon that last statement with a ten-foot pole.
Instead, he suggests “Well, you could try to keep it from her but, knowing how siblings can be, she’ll probably find out anyway. Better rip off the metaphorical band-aid and tell her yourself first so she’ll be less mad about you keeping it from her.”
Danny seems to think it over for a moment before nodding.
“Yeah, if I tell her beforehand she might be merciful enough to make it painless.”
Jason lets out a snort. He then considers something before speaking up.
“I could… show you around sometime if you’d like? Explain some standard protocols, show you which places to avoid, which places to visit… So something like this doesn’t happen again…?”
“I’d… like that” Danny days, looking up at him with a small smile.
“So…” Jason decides to switch topics “Tell me some more about yourself, you’re studying aerospace engineering, right?”
Danny decides it’s better not to ask how Red Hood found out all this information about him. If he were in any danger from the other, he probably wouldn’t have gotten flowers or been taken out to dinner anyway.
“Oh, yeah! When I was little I actually wanted to be an astronaut, but due to health reasons, that’s unfortunately not possible anymore. So instead, I decided to combine my mechanical engineering knowledge with my love for space. This way, I might still be able to land a job at NASA.”
Jason ponders over the possibility of sneaking Danny onto the watchtower.
They get interrupted by a waiter approaching their table, nervously asking if they’d like to order dessert.
“Oh, I’ll have some cannoli please!” Danny says.
Ah, a man after his own heart.
---
When they get to the observatory, Jason already notices Danny’s excitement growing the closer they get.
He managed to rent the place out for tonight, not having been in the mood for a tour or something. Besides, if he really wanted to know more about the stars, he’s pretty sure his date Danny’s got that covered for him.
“Over there you can see Ursa Major and Ursa Minor! They’re also known as The Big and Little Dipper, and are some of the easiest constellations to spot, mainly due to their pan shape. Though, the Big Dipper isn't the entire constellation, but actually only a part of Ursa Major, just the tail.”
Danny had started to tell him about the different constellations they should be able to see at this time of the year, using the telescope to navigate towards them and then letting Jason take a look while he tells him all about what they’re looking at.
“Oh! And there’s Hydra! While some parts of the constellation are visible for about half of the year, around this time of year the full constellation should be visible! It is both the largest and longest constellation.”
Danny seems to be practically glowing.
Wait, scratch that. Danny is glowing.
Jason takes a good look at Danny while he’s rambling. Not only does he seem to be emitting a soft glow, but his hair is also slowly starting to float as if he’s underwater. It looks like his meta powers are probably acting up.
Moreover, his freckles, which were very faint before, are now glowing a bright and familiar Lazarus green, which Jason finds mildly concerning. But also… kinda cute…
He tenses a little, keeping a wary eye on Danny, before slowly relaxing as he notices Danny is still excitedly going on about the Hydra constellation.
“Did you know Hydra is also often referred to as The Water Snake? The naming is based on the myth where a crow served Apollo a cup of water with a hydra snake in it. Apollo then caught the crow and was so enraged that he threw the cup and the snake into the sky.”
Yeah, no matter the connection Danny might have to the Lazarus Pits. There’s no need to worry about this fucking nerd, Jason notes with a small hint of fondness.
At the end of their little observatory tour, the glow around Danny starts to dim and his hair stops floating. The glowing of his freckles has also started to disappear, though he is still beaming.
Well, he’d call that a successful first date.
---
After their date, Jason brings Danny back to his apartment on his motorcycle. Once they’ve arrived and Danny is about to leave, Jason blurts something out.
“Oh wait! Before you go…”
Danny looks at him questioningly.
“Can I have your number?” he quickly asks, glad that his helmet is obscuring his reddened face.
He watches the way Danny lights up, his cheeks dusted light pink.
“Ah, uh. Sure!” the space nerd stammers.
Jason takes out a pen that he totally hadn’t taken with him just for this occasion and hands it over. Danny takes the pen and pauses, looking Jason in his Red Hood outfit over, before taking a gentle hold of Jason’s hand.
He glances up at Jason with a questioning glance, asking if he’s okay with this. Jason gives him a nod, that he really hopes doesn’t come over as too eager, in return.
Either way, it seems to be enough for Danny, who then proceeds to move down Jason’s glove a bit and write down his number on Jason’s hand.
Once he’s done, he puts the glove back in place and hands the pen back. Danny’s face is red and he’s grinning. Cute… Jason stays silent, not trusting his voice, and nods in thanks.
“So, I’ll uh see you… next time?” He asks, hope lacing his voice.
Again, Jason just nods in response.
“Great! Cool cool cool. Uh, yeah, uh Toodaloo Kangaroo?” He ends his statement with an awkward grin and finger guns, stumbling when he tries to walk backward.
Fuck me.
He watches as Danny rubs the back of his neck sheepishly before waving him goodbye and turning around, making his way into the apartment complex.
Jason keeps his eyes on Danny as he watches him disappear into the building before tugging off his glove and lowering his gaze to the phone number scrawled on his hand.
He swallows as he realizes that oh, he’s in deep.

Hi, I would like to ask a question! :D So since you're quite good with DP crossovers, I have one question I have in mind. So let's assuming the events of the video game series 'Nicktoons Unite' exists in the same universe (or multiverse, depending on how you see it) as the Secret Quartet/Trio, how would Jake, Randy and Adrien react to Timmy, Jimmy and Spongebob and vice versa? And how's Danny dealing with all of this? After all, this is not the first time Danny gets caught up in a crossover xD
Thanks for the ask! Just as a cautionary note here, it’s been a while since I’ve seen some of those cartoons (neither Fairly Odd Parents or Spongebob were ones I saw much of, and I don’t think I ever actually saw Jimmy Neutron). I also never played Nicktoons Unite so don’t know how that crossover happened, short of what I will learn as I skim the wiki page.
However, since Danny was involved before, he can more or less smooth over the transition of the eventual meeting. Seems like Jimmy spearheaded getting people together in the video game, so he’d probably gather Timmy and Spongebob again before contacting Danny. Chances are, the bad guys were getting together and plotting again, and Jimmy wanted to head them off at the pass. Except this time, Danny’s running with another crowd, who had also heard rumours. (Mostly through Fu. He has a lot of poker contacts. Jake, not sure he could handle this by himself when it didn’t necessarily seem like it would remain limited to the US, wisely called in backup who would believe him without the necessary proof the Dragon Council would require.) Danny sends a message to the others in the Secret Quartet before joining up with Jimmy, Timmy, and Spongebob and essentially guiding Jimmy’s use of the Portal Machine to them so they can all meet up.
Danny would have marginally more time to fill in Jimmy, Timmy, and Spongebob. I sincerely doubt much is going to faze Spongebob; isn’t everything this strange on the surface? Timmy, of course, is familiar with magic. Kwami? Probably some fae (he’s convinced of this despite heavy protests from Wanda and Cosmo. Or at least Wanda.). Dragons? Why not, if fairies exist? Ninjas who have to deal with evil Sorcerers? That’s pretty much a given, right? (He would probably find real ninjas and dragons cooler than transforming into a superhero via magic because, well, he could technically do that whenever he wants.) I would expect the most knee-jerk reaction to all this from Jimmy, except that he’s apparently already met the others, in which case he has no reason to be surprised. There’s not much left to be surprised about after finding out about magic, ghosts, and talking sponges. (Is he anything like Dexter from Dexter’s Lab? Except with substantially more social EQ?)
On the other side of things, Spongebob would obviously be the weirdest one. Randy would probably roll with it because he’s Randy and just ask a lot of random questions and altogether get along very well with him, Jake would probably chalk it up to magical creatures and the fact that he hasn’t learned them all yet (I mean, he can’t talk; he’s used to talking animals after Fu and the other magical guardians, and being a dragon himself….), and Adrien would stop asking questions once Plagg mentioned Atlantean experimentation. (He wouldn’t be sure if Plagg was kidding, no one else would know, not even Jake despite Omina the Atlantean Dragon being on the Dragon Council, and the idea of Plagg not being kidding would be too unsettling for Adrien to pursue.)
Randy’s dealt with magic in the form of the Sorcerer and the Sorceress and, well, whatever the Nomicon and the Ninja Suit are. Jake’s dealt with fairies of all sorts before, so Cosmo and Wanda are zero surprise. Their reverence to him is, however. (Because he’s the American Dragon, and they–or at least Wanda, who makes sure Cosmo is following suit by hitting him when he acts inappropriately–must show him their utmost respect because it’s his job to protect them all. Meanwhile, Jake and Randy are engaged in some silly competitive thing and Timmy is just watching this and can’t believe that this kid who’s barely older than him is supposed to be responsible for every magical creature in the country.) Adrien would probably try questioning Timmy or the fairies to learn more about them (it seems a safer topic than Spongebob) because he’s really curious and interested, even if Plagg is less than amused. (Plagg is of the opinion that those two have more destructive power than he does in the wrong hands, and his opinion of Timmy currently isn’t very high, but he’s also hungry because Adrien hasn’t given him camembert since before they left, so he doesn’t have a very high opinion of anyone who is stopping him from getting in the way of his food when chances are good Adrien is going to need to transform soon.) Jake is probably happy that Adrien has someone else to question about all this stuff.
To be fair, I can see Adrien questioning Jimmy about everything, too. Science is as interesting as magic, especially things like this. He’d understand more than Jake, Randy, or even Danny, just because he’s had years of extra lessons and the best homeschooling money can buy. Jimmy’s probably happy to talk to someone else besides Danny about all this, because while Danny understands considerably more, he doesn’t always quite get everything. Randy would be interested in what stuff could do and how he could maybe get something to help him annoy/foil McFist and Viceroy, not about how anything actually worked. Jake would probably be a little too preoccupied with trying to figure out how to tell the Dragon Council more normal people know about the magical world and explaining why no memories should be wiped to enjoy much, although chances are good he’d request a copy of the portal machine, too. It would make things easier for him, even if Gramps would not approve and Fu would actually back him up (because chances are it would be stolen, and then where would they be? In this same mess. Again.).
As for Danny? He’s probably not amused to be thrown into something like this again, but better they work together and deal with it quickly than face an apocalyptic future because one of those in his memory is more than enough. There’s a lot of them now, with the villains no doubt teaming up with more villains, too, and making things even harder for them. Giving everyone the rundown of who can do what is essential, and what the people they know they’re up against can do and what their usual aims are, but trying to get organized would be a nightmare. Too many of them are used to making things up on the fly when things go south, and improvisation doesn’t always work well when your plan accidentally negates someone else’s. Communication is going to be key, and the best organizer in the group is going to find themselves as the coordinator. Fenton Phones for everyone, at least, unless Jimmy has a better communication device on hand.
It’ll be rough. They’ll lose the first skirmish at the very least–too disorganized, too much internal arguing about the best course of action–and, potentially, lose at least some of the element of surprise, depending on how many people are involved. The next battles won’t go much better, and they’ll lose as much as they gain. But as they get the hang of working with each other, they’ll get better. So will the villains’ defences, of course–the heroes aren’t the only ones learning from their trial and error–but they’ve a number of different tricks up their sleeves, so they’d pull off a win eventually, hard fought though it would be.

  Man. Where to even begin this week. Well. I will start by saying my reading achievements were next to none. Not quite none. But near enough. Work has been very demanding, I have been very tired and my heart just was not in it. No reflection on the books, more a reflection on my weary and rapidly ageing bones and brain telling me to take a break. In fact I am writing this post in stages as I know where my head is currently at so it if makes no sense come the end … well nowt new there really but this time there is an excuse at least 🙂
So, anyway. Aside from being generally ancient (turned 42 this past week don’t you know) I was preoccupied with something else. Lordy 42. Do you remember being a kid and thinking that people in their forties were ancient? Well I’ll let you into a secret – when you finally reach your forties you bloody feel it too. Just kidding. Age is just a number. Like my chest, mine is just larger than some, that’s all. But back to my point (wandering mind comes with age too…) I was away from home from Thursday until Sunday this week because I took the plunge, packed my backbone in a small holdall and made my way to Harrogate for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Festival.
It’s an interesting festival, very different in tone to Crimefest, geared very much to a social atmosphere but encouraging and enticing readers with a healthy and steady supply of books. I say healthy with my tongue in my cheek (not easy to do without biting said tongue – don’t believe me try it), as carrying around the dang things all day has knackered my shoulder but hey ho.
As book hauls go, this week was mega. It was also rather big in terms of meeting people. I met a whole host of bloggers this weekend who I’m not going to try and name for fear of missing someone and causing great upset, but it was a pleasure to meet you all either finally or again (and you super lovely ones already know who you are 😉 ). I also met quite a few authors that I admire, including Robert Byrndza and the lovely Jan, Caroline Mitchell and Mel Sherratt, Graham Smith, Sarah Wray, Claire Seeber and also got to meet Keshini Naidoo (yes – a small Bookouture bias in this post I think).
It was also lovely to catch up with Kim Nash, Karen Sullivan, Steph Broadribb, Amanda Jennings, Lucy V Hay, Amer Anwar, Felicia Yap, Patricia Gibney, Bernie Steadman and Fiona Cummins again, and to get to say hi to Paul Burston as I absolutely loved his book The Black Path. I even remembered to take pictures of some of them (but not many as I suck at that). Oh yes, and it was nice to see Rod Reynolds again even if he did show Jo and Emma the terrible selfie he took at Crimefest (terrible because I was in it). And lovely to finally meet Graeme Cumming and have a catch up chat with Gabriela Harding in the quiet times. I’m just hoping I haven’t missed anyone and if I have I’m sorry and I do love you too. (Well at least like and admire – love is such a strong word 😉 ).
Have to give credit to Abbie Osborne for the selfies as I would totally not take those 😀
As well as generally milling about I did attend a couple of panels, though not as many as I perhaps would have liked so I’ll try better next time. The Friday night panel chaired by Sarah Millican and featuring Lee Child, Mark Billingham and Val McDermid was hilarious as you would expect. And I totally agree with Sarah Hilary’s shout out for Chris Whitaker as a totally brilliant writing talent. I also went to a blogger/author event organised by Orion where we met Mari Hannah, Emma Kavanagh, Stephanie Marland (aka Steph Broadribb, aka Crime Thriller Girl) and Lara Dearman, a forensics talk in which I learned many important things to include in ‘Killer’, and a quick start talk on writing crime fiction with Isabel Ashdown and Sam Eades.
And I had two lovely evenings out, firstly with Abigail Osborne, Leah and Jill of Jills Book Cafe, and then with Tracy Fenton and the guy and gals from TBC. Thanks for the company all.
And then there were the books… So. Many. Books.
I got the following:
The Devils Claw by Lara Dearman (Kindle pre order 7/9/17);
My Little Eye by Stephanie Marland (Kindle pre order 2/11/17) Happy dance moment :D;

The Mitford Murders by Jessica Fellowes (Kindle pre order 14/9/17);
The Collector by Fiona Cummins; (soooooooooooo excited about this one and so new there are no Amazon links yet!!! :D) If you don’t know why I’m excited and haven’t yet read Rattle (and if not why not?) then you can order it here and get yourself ready for next year. Did I mention I love that book? I do. I was so excited I may have actually started reading this in bed instead of the books I should have been reading. Oops. (Sorry – not sorry). All the eeeeeeeeeks and squeeeeeeeeals.
The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (pre order January 2018);
Consent by Leo Benedictus (pre order 1/2/18);
Perfect Remains by Helen Fields;
Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughn (Kindle pre order 11/1/18);
Strange Magic by Syd Moore
So all in all a great book haul of a weekend. And I visited Betty’s and treated myself to a belated birthday cake. Go me.
Now the weekend wasn’t without it’s down moments too but least said, soonest mended so lets move on.
Now as if all that wasn’t brilliant enough, before I left for Harrogate I received some absolutely stonkingly fantabulous book post from the wonderful Louise Ross (LJ Ross). Now I knew I’d be getting the signed book as I won it in a charity auction, as well as the chance to be a named character. But I wasn’t expecting to receive a DCI Ryan series mug as well. I actually collect mugs as well as books so this couldn’t have been a better gift for me and will take pride of place in the collection.
And, totally not book related but my new cushions and mugs turned up. How fab are these?
The McMoos by Jennifer Hogwood – You totally need to check out the website.
Just the one book order this week (just as well) which was Bad Sister by Sam Carrington. It’s due out on 5th October and I can’t wait to get my mitts on a copy.
Just the one Netgalley this week too (just as well) which was The Good Sister by Jess Ryder. It’s due for release on 16th August.
I see a theme here. Kind of reminiscent of my life. I have one of each. I’ll let them fight over which is which 😉
I also received an ARC of I Know A Secret by Tess Gerritsen, the brand new Rizzoli and Isles novel which is due out on 10th August.
Now I am hoping that all of these exciting things I’ve been rambling about above will distract you from my reading tally which stands at the grand total of 2. Lorraine at The Book Review Cafe will be laughing at me this week given her mammoth reading achievements and rightly so. If only I’d saved the bloody Mr Men books… When I say reading tally it was one read, one listen as I only completed one book and then listened to an audio on the way too and from Harrogate. Failed blogger I am then (this is not news but now we have evidence).
Books I have read
Red Is The Colour by Mark L. Fowler
A GRIPPING NEW POLICE THRILLER Bullying. Corruption. Murder.
It is the summer of 2002. The corpse of a 15 year old boy, who has been missing for thirty years, is discovered in Stoke-on-Trent. The city is on the cusp of change and Chief Superintendent Berkins wants the case solved quickly.
DCI Jim Tyler has arrived from London under a cloud, moving to Staffordshire to escape his past. He is teamed up with DS Danny Mills to investigate the case, but there is tension between the detectives.
When the dead boy’s sister comes forward, describing a bright, solitary child, she points a finger at the school bullies, which puts important careers at stake.
Then one of the bullies is found brutally murdered and when Tyler and Mills dig deeper they start to suspect a cover-up.
What is the connection between the death of a schoolboy in 1972 and this latest killing?
With the pressure building, and the past catching up with DCI Tyler, will he and DS Mills be able to put aside their differences in order to catch a cold-blooded killer?
I’m reviewing this for the blog tour next Monday but I have to be honest and say that this was a really well observed look at childhood bullying an the people who were involved, both directly and indirectly. With a thirty year old victim it is a tough ask for newly transferred DCI Jim Tyler to bring the killer to justice in this new police procedural from Mark L. Fowler and Bloodhound Books. It is released tomorrow, 25th July, and you can buy a copy here.
  You Don’t Know Me by Imran Mahmood
It’s easy to judge between right and wrong – isn’t it?
Not until you hear a convincing truth.
Now it’s up to you to decide…
An unnamed defendant stands accused of murder. Just before the Closing Speeches, the young man sacks his lawyer, and decides to give his own defence speech.
He tells us that his barrister told him to leave some things out. Sometimes, the truth can be too difficult to explain, or believe. But he thinks that if he’s going to go down for life, he might as well go down telling the truth.
There are eight pieces of evidence against him. As he talks us through them one by one, his life is in our hands. We, the reader – member of the jury – must keep an open mind till we hear the end of his story. His defence raises many questions… but at the end of the speeches, only one matters:
Did he do it?
Oh my life. What an intriguing novel. Taking courtroom drama to brand new heights this is a story which will not only challenge your idea of right and wrong but also the whole idea of how courtroom dramas should be. Set as a series of court transcripts and told in the defendants voice the author takes you on a journey and you as reader are set to act as jury. I listened to the Audio book of this and I have to say it was absolutely perfect in this format. My review will follow but you can order a copy of the book here.
That is all. Thankfully I was fully prepared on the blogging front so I had posts everyday.
