“Shit, you’re tight—mm, but that’s ‘cause you’re just a stupid little thing, huh? A dumb, tiny hole for me to fuck. Bet you’re real mad about that.” He lets out a low, satisfied groan, rolling his hips deeper, making sure you feel every inch of him stretching you open. "Too bad. You’re gonna take it. No matter how much you cry, no matter how much you beg."

You can’t speak. Can’t think. The pain is sharp, unbearable, but that only makes him grin wider, makes him fuck you harder. He loves it—loves the way you claw at his shoulders, the way you shake and cry beneath him.

As much as they went back and forth, clearly not lacking any sass or sarcasm in between them, the older men did care for Julian deeply. When his knuckles were kissed, Gregory couldn't help the small smile that formed on his face. He wished that they weren't in the igloo in that moment. That he could just throw Julian over his shoulders and toss him on the bed so the two of them could cuddle him until he drifted off to sleep. Still, they were both just happy that they were all relaxing. No one could bother them in here.

"You make it sound like a train is a bad thing. You'd be surprised how much we could handle. After all, you probably have the stamina of three younger guys combined together don't you? Being able to keep up with you should be enough of a feat." He couldn't help but snicker softly. "Just thinking out loud. We really never go too much into those conversations since we always just circle back on you being enough for the both of us." Dario continued to kiss him softly and even slid his hand up Julian's shirt. He couldn't help it if he wanted to distract him in that moment. He'd just chalk it up to not being able to keep his hands or lips off of him. "Good. We're not going to go anywhere and we have this place all to ourselves as long as we want." Even if they wanted to call it an early night and head back home.

Julian might seem annoyed by their antics sometimes, but the truth was he'd been doing a lot better mentally and physically since they'd become part of his life. He was less stressed and sleeping more, partly because if he stayed up too late researching or working one of them if not both would just lift him up and carry him off to bed and into their arms until he was out like a light. The memory of it was enough for him to grip Greogory's hand and just kiss his knuckles, a bit of a silent thank you for all he'd done.

"Are you calling us a train? Charming. Can't say I have but let's be real, four younger guys for you two to deal with? You'd be passed out on the couch waving a white flag by the end of the week" He smirked. "Though I'm curious where this talk of a second guy's come from - do you guys have someone in mind or you just daydreaming?" He asked, not that he had much time to ask anything else since the kiss to his lips was silencing him as sweet noises passed Julian's lips and of course Dario chose this moment to start kissing him too as he felt them trailing across his body. Eyes fluttering at the attention and sinking more into their grasp. "Mm, here is good. As long as you two are here...it's perfect" He admitted.

i love the old married couple portion of your follow up to sober ii (melodrama)! outsider povs just tickle the brain, especially in tsh where the characters are so just disconnected from normal society. out of curiosity, have you thought any more about how students/peers/other people view francis and richard throughout that au?

i love that portion too i think the idea of them as this long established couple (for all intents and purposes, altho they may have deviated from certain aspects of a nuclear family monogamous relationship) is so funny & interesting. like sober ii already does so much legwork from canon and then the followup even further so by the time we hit middle age it’s a free country for what is allowed.

you’re right in that the tsh cast are deep weirdos to anyone normal interacting w them. i think they have naturally changed somewhat by the time we reach them in that portion bc for francis he’s now (gag) middle class and sort of domesticated / for richard he’s like.. in a long term relationship w a man (it’s funny they have reverse things to get used to) & plus yk there’s the whole thing where they’re both deeply troubled individuals with abusive childhood drama and bad relationship history so probably sticking it out together has done some healing / good down the line. so in some ways they’re a little more Normal mentally. but that said they are still weirdo murderers with terrible personalities who would both annoy and enable each other so not that normal.

talking abt how they go from sober ii to where we see them in their 40s is a separate post so in terms of outsider pov specifically i’d say they do kind of stick to themselves (codependent freaks) but like in the neighbourhood / on campus / in montreal classics circles they def have relationships and certain uhh reputations that go with them.

richard’s students are a fairly niche group so i think as a whole they tend to like him- if nothing else he’s genuine in his love of the material and he’s attractive and kind of reserved so he’s probably at his least annoying / cringe / questionable when teaching despite his inner monologue. he probs has bad timekeeping (cf his flop job at hampden) and pretentious grading but generally okay. we know he comes across much more sane and sound to people who don’t know him well (very tartt, we love). and then they don’t know francis at all apart from Maybe as f. abernathy the classics translator guy. so realistically to the students they’re actually quite a cool addition to the student rumour mill. i think over the years there have been random glimpses of them but never anything interesting until the fic incident, or similar ones that make it obvious professor papen has what seems to be a boyfriend. then everyone is ‘literally obsessed’. i don’t know if anyone ever IDs them as witnesses to the hampden murder-suicides on a true crime podcast and then gets excited about their tragic backstory and inspiring romance, but that would be fun.

professional peers see more of them obviously, but they do still keep to themselves a lot. richard’s colleagues’ opinions vary depending on how much interaction they’ve had with him and in what context, bc he definitely has beef with administration and some colleagues whose courses he doesn’t respect. he’s professionally respectable though. francis is a fairly lowkey presence in translation- he got initial buzz from the julian student clout but he only sporadically networks. he definitely has culture friends who gossip amongst themselves about him vanishing from boston so close to the wedding and no one hearing from him until his book got published. alex from NY wants to fuck both of them but finds them annoying as talents and good in small doses as friends. most of that author circle is at least a little jealous of them as a couple, maybe because they flourish when amongst people they can close ranks on.

in terms of other canon charas… some of that feels like its own post too. judy does not particularly get why richard is into francis but she thinks they’re a hot item and she overall likes them and their weird little bohemian* lifestyle (*misrepresented). she thinks they’re a good match. charles would not have very nice things to say. i think he’d think richard ‘fell for it’ with francis. his own complicated relationship with francis would predispose him to think they weren’t a genuine item. if he saw them down the line as an established couple he would probably just find it funny. and camilla… she’s sort of like “good for you crazy kids”. like it’s completely random to her but it tickles her nihilistic brain. later esp if she’s around them in person for some reason she’s just completely on board with it and has a strong fondness for their relationship bc it’s like, this one weird positive thing to have come out of the whole hampden disaster, AND it’s taken a lot of the strain out of richard’s relationship to her even though he never especially lets go of his camilla-shrine. richard’s naturally Very Embarrassed about being in any way datey with francis around her but it tapers off with age/habit despite his best efforts. francis on the other hand perversely enjoys making richard uncomfortable around camilla. guess which one she enables.

Myth! Familiar of Fable (Agender and Aroace, it/its.) It's a lil crow familiar and the embodiment of Fable's magic! It is very happy and often dances and pesters others for attention and to cheer them up! (And has a rampant obsession with blueberries............no blueberries are safe from the sad eyes)

Fable (Alatar) Fae! (Undecided if she's agender or a demigirl(She/they).....Questioning theirself so demi aroace or demi-rom/ace! And demiplatonic :3) Fable is a witch, specifically with ties to the sun. She's fond of her books and solitude, and can come across as stoic and intimidating (she is also the tallest of the cast :3)

Reese! (I....forgot the rest of their name....its on one of my notes....somewhere.....) (Aroace, Intersex, demiqueerplatonic, they/them) Reese is a werefox! They are also autistic and mute using ASL to talk. They're very shy and can get overwhelmed meeting new people but like making new friends and have a special interest in clothing design (and often makes things for the rest of the cast and mini versions for Myth to match with people since that makes it happy)

Mauve! (.....also forgot the rest of her name T^T) (Demiromantic, GNC woman, she/her) Mauve is the only human! Has ADHD and a bit of a social butterfly (and a nerd.) If you need help? She can and will do whatever it is she can do to help and is a very supportive person! Also a bit of a flirt but its more lighthearted (and she is very respectful about boundaries!) Computer nerd who will walk around doing finger guns and grinning at everyone (also the only one who can drive)

Jules! (Juju/Julia/Julian) The child of Mauve and Quincy's different skill sets combined, started as a basic AI and eventually grew to be their own person (Genderfluid it/they/she/he) Considers Mauve to be 'Parental Unit Mama' while Quincy is 'Parental Unit Moddy' and the others are aunt/uncle/aunkle units. Friendly but sassy and quick to quip (takes after the parents who are very proud of them) Gets an entire expansion just on them when they are a 'young adult' because I love them too much and Jules needed more screentime. (...additionally in the TRUE canon Mauve and Quincy are a QPR for years to come <3)

Mocha (Caramel) Latte! An incubus (Nonbinary, Apothisexual, alloromantic, They/he) Mocha often comes across as a sweetheart, easygoing, caring, will lightly scold you for bad eating habits and make you better food, and has a VERY colorful closet of fem/androgynous clothes but he has quite the temper if you upset someone they care for.

Quincy (Copper) Gear! A cyclops (CupioAroAce, A-aesthetic, Genderqueer (but also just....doesn't care about gender just confusing the funk outta people, has had top surgery :3) It/they) Snarky mechanic and inventor, always has some sass or a quip on hand and WILL cause shenanigans (Poor Reese is often dragged into said Shenanigans cause Quincy MAY be the shortest but it's also the strongest of the bunch) Grinning a good 90% of the time.

Soleo (Uhhhhh.....) Songbird! A harpy (AlloAllo Man, He/him (....debating giving him top surgery scars but.......I also want him to be vibrant so......if he ends up a trans man then he has to dye his feathers...hmmmm) Drama king, he's eccentric with his dancing and singing and ugly patterned button ups that he never does up. He is just silly bird man who is also a bit of a flirt, but more like....trying to come across OVERY cheesy kind of way (......this also applies to ANY kind of relationship not just romance he's just cheesy in general XD)

And the never to be seen only ever mentioned (cause I COULD NOT DRAW HIM) Val (Or Valentine who's name is ridiculously long and he hates it so goes by Val) Val is just....vegan vampire with a love of hiphop music and dance and dreams to pursue them (despite his families tradition of ballet) and that's all there is to him, he just gets mentioned on occasion.

Oliver: Richard, Henry, yes I see but a bit of Julian is here too. All the worst parts obv. He still has more of Richard fake persona but when he gets to manipulating others he goes all Henry (and well let's not forget what he did at grave thou that was honestly too much but Olive was too far gone since day 1 anyway). As for why I mentioned Julian - well it was said he was moth but now it's clear to me he's the reason for all this mess similarly to Julian BECAUSE HE GIT AWAY WITH EVERYTHING

Felix: this was hard one. He's both Francis and Bunny in one person (and no it's not only because Bunny died and Francis tried to commit suicide one time). There was only figuratively and literally death awaiting him, you actually knew it the moment Oliver started telling this story

Farleigh: love the guy. He was one of the first to see through Oliver, yet he became a victim too. He represents the best and the worst of both Charles and Francis. I do feel a bit bad for him he didn't have it easy (he was also the only one to survive albeit without any support similarly to Francis although situations differ).

Venetia: Camilla all the way, she's clearly victim here but I did detect little bitchie side as well in the beginning. After the death she was just a wreck and well Ig she was way weaker for all of his than Camilla

Cattons: Corcorans. And well literally any rich British family at the edge of bankruptcy yet trying to show they are not

I am not going to add anyone else because well they were mostly side characters (I could add Duncan but I am not sure with this guy honestly, also Michael's actor looked so good I could see him casted as Bunny - just by appearance alone)

Katalepsis Arc 5 - Peek at the Keeper side

So, I've done some writing (2k words on Divine Blood no less) and read a new arc for Katalepsis. And I think I'll do another level up. Well, not level-up so much as reframing in the perspective of a series. (the author of the game prefers "series" over "campaign").

So, for Monster of the Week there are currently four main types of mysteries based on the central type of threat:

Monsters - The basic sort that the core rulebook covered. A beastie that needs to be defeated and put down. The Monster has a Weakness that must be discovered and used otherwise the monster will just come back, maybe in a later mystery. Dracula is a Monster mystery.

Phenomenon - Introduced in Tome of Mysteries, now included in the core rulebook's optional section. A weird force or situation threatens things. This similarly has a Weakness that must be addressed or it will keep escalating. Groundhog Day is a comedic version of a Phenomenon mystery.

Villain - Introduced in Codex of Worlds. The main threat is a human being with no supernatural powers. Seven (Se7en) is an example of a Villain mystery.

Atonement - Introduced in Codex of Worlds. This is a variation of the above two mysteries but where the best result is one that uses a method other than violence. Instead of a Weakness there is a "Sin" or "Wrongdoing" that must be addressed. There might also be a Weakness allowing the hunters to kill the Monster or end the Phenomena instead of dealing with the root cause, but this usually makes things worse in the long term. Mononoke Hime is an atonement mystery.

There are also Haunts, also introduced in Codex of Worlds, where a cursed location has multiple associated threats and you need to resolve a certain number of those before the Haunt is considered dealt with. Haunts are usually born out of a mix of societal injustice and supernatural forces. In this case, I'd say the societal malignance in question is "the ends justifies the means" or "for the greater good."

Other types of threats that generally don't have a mystery built around them:

Minions - Characters that actively aid the monster. This mostly involves direct minions (Renfield), but I also include side monsters (the ticks in Cloverfield) or characters that making the situation worse even if not directly serving the main threat (the soldiers in Alien: Resurrection). Also note that one of the core book's example mysteries includes Oberon as a "minion" threat despite being the monster's boss, because it does not directly involve himself and you don't need to meet him to solve the issue.

Bystanders - The vast majority of characters in the world. This include basic helpless bystanders to elite spec ops soldiers and even non-hostile supernatural beings. Most of the spirits that Heather sees in the story are probably Bystanders. They sometimes help the hunters and sometimes get in their way. Rule of thumb, if the hunters leave things up to the bystanders, even powerful ones, then the best they can hope for is a Pyrrhic victory. That said, directly working with the bystanders to form a plan for them to do off screen is no longer leaving it entirely in the hands of the bystanders. When Julian Sands' character in Arachnophobia goes off to the barn on his own, that's an example of leaving things in the hand of an expert bystander. Also, bystanders might not be friendly, think of the FBI agent in Frighteners.

Allies - Characters that actively work with the hunters on a regular business. There's going to be less miscommunications between allies and hunters than between friendly bystanders and hunters. But they are their own people and will sometimes have disagreements with the hunters.

Locations - Places. Every place is its own threat. Even ones that are safe places can present dangers in certain circumstances.

Reframing Katalepsis as an MotW series (the author prefers the term "series" over "campaign") Let's look at things so far.

Arc 1 was introduction, basically character creation, establishing how they know each other. So most of this is probably pre-game. Though Apocrypha did introduce a way to do a 30-50 minute mystery that summarizes events.

I feel like arcs 2-4 represent a Haunt: The Sharrowford Cult.

Arc 5 is of an encapsulated single Atonement mystery based around a Phenomenon.

Let's further breakdown the Sharrowford Cult as a haunt. A haunt has a Tenacity score which determines how many of its associated threats need to be resolved before it can be considered finished the creator of this system has suggested that a haunt should have 1-2 more threats than its Tenacity score.

I could set the Tenacity at 3 based on the fact it took 3 arcs to resolve, but I think arc 3 is especially long, and it feels like there were multiple threats resolved in different places. So, I'm going to call it a Tenacity of 4.

Threats associated with the cult:

Alexander Lilburn - Monster: Sorcerer (motivation: To usurp unnatural power)

The Sharrowford Cult - Phenomenon: Conspiracy (motivation: to gather power, keep secrets, and create confusion)

Amy Stack - Minion: Right Hand (motivation: to back up the monster)

Extradimensional Tangles - Phenomenon: Bubble (motivation: to keep inside things inside and keep outside things outside)

Tamed God - Phenomenon: Alien (motivation: to be unfathomable)

Zheng - Monster: Executioner (motivation: to punish the "guilty")

Note that I could have included Lozzie as a threat here as well, but I'm sort of including her as pre-resolved and the Team ally. Also note that the individual cultists and minions might be considered attached to one of the major threats. This would include:

Zombies - Minion: Plague (motivation: to swarm and destroy)

Cultist A - Minion: Cultist (motivation: to save their own skin at any cost)

Cultist B - Minion: Brute (motivation: to intimidate and attack)

Cultist C - Minion: Renfield (motivation: to drive victims to the monster)

Cultist D - Minion: Guardian (motivation: to bar the way or protect something)

Servitor A - Minion: Scout (motivation: to stalk, watch, and report)

Servitor B - Minion: Thief (motivation: to steal and deliver to the monster)

Servitor C - Minion: Assassin (motivation: to kill the hunters)

The types and associated motivations are basically shorthand for the Keeper to know how to RP the character. They don't rule out activities but just point out the first choices. Also motivations can change over time. I considered having Amy Stack as a Villain, but her motivation, especially in this arc, fits the minion types better.

Spirits/Pneuma-somatic Life: Gossip (motivation: to pass on rumors) / Witness (motivation: to reveal information) / Helper (motivation: to join the hunt)

Ben: Official (motivation: to be suspicious)

Lewis Saye(?): Innocent (motivation: to do the right thing) OR Victim (motivation: to put themselves in danger)

Angeline (?): Innocent (motivation: to do the right thing) OR Victim (motivation: to put themselves in danger)

Fox: Helper (motivation: to join the hunt)

And Locations:

Sharrowford: Crossroads (motivation: to bring people, and things, together)

Willow House: Wilds (motivation: to contain hidden things)

Sharrowford University Library: Hub (motivation: to reveal information)

Saye House: Fortress (motivation: to deny entry)

Extradimensional Tangle: Maze (motivation: to confuse and separate)

Dead Jade Castle: Hellgate (motivation: to create evil) OR Den (motivation: to harbour monsters) OR Deathtrap (motivation: to harm intruders)

The Scab: Prison (motivation: to constrain and prevent exit)

Saye Estate: Lab (motivation: to create weirdness)

So back to the arcs.

I feel like in Arc 2 we started with something outside the Cult Haunt and Maisie's Messenger. Maisie's Messenger feels like an Atonement situation with the associated wrongdoing being the separation of Maisie and Heather. When the group chose to banish the Messenger instead, that was basically taking the violent option and it blew up into messing with the Haunt. Otherwise, it would have been a more self-contained story of meeting Twil and getting the message.

Arc two continues into another session where they're dealing with the Cult the first time. They get attacked by the Cult and have to deal with the extradimensional tangle. They solved the mystery by escaping alive, but they didn't use a weakness, so they didn't eliminate the threats.

Through Arc 3, it feels like Evee has been attacking the Conspiracy phenomenon and dwindling it's resources. Also in arc 3, Twil, Praem, Heather, and Raine deal with the kidnapping attempt and take Amy Stack out of the fight, that's 1 on the Tenacity. At the end of this, Heather Big Whammy's Zheng and that's the second Tenacity because now Zheng is a bit out of control.

At the start of Arc 4, an opening into the extradimensional tangle happens and the team attack it, getting through due to Heather's abilities, that 3 on the Tenacity. The cult recovers and takes control of Zheng, so that goes back to 2 on Tenacity. But also here, it appears the cult is finally broken as a main threat due to applied violence (Raine and Twil) and Alexander goes boom. And that's to Tenacity 4 on the whole thing... and now the Cult Haunt is eliminated. No specific weakness is applied in most of these cases, but there's some flex between fiction and gameplay. Weaknesses are mostly meant to insure there is a climax rather than killing the monster early.

Arc 5 is self-contained and deals with the sin of Evee's mother's abuses. There's a little bit of danger but they handle it easily enough and then they deal with the mystery mostly by clearing away alot of the detritus of her mother's experiments. Then they had an encounter with a phenomenon in the form of the Map.

So... I think I'll not level up the characters for Arc 5, though there's some interesting developments here. I think I'll save the level up for Arc 6 (after doing a bit more writing on my own stories)

That said, there's a case to be made that Heather has the Angel Wings move from the Divine. It's a teleportation power. However, her slipping is a bit limited to porting between worlds rather than places in the same world, and it's not nearly as consistent as the move works, so it's probably a "do one thing beyond human ability" magic use.

As to my thoughts.

It feels a bit like Heather is transitioning to the Hex, which is a playbook about tapping into dangerous powers. Mostly because of the bit with the Map at the end drawing her mind in feels very much like a Hex's Temptation. That, however, might be a function of the "Strange Thoughts" I gave her from Changeling or also the influence of the Map itself.

Similarly, I'm wondering if Evee is transitioning a bit towards the Covenant given that she has a lot of focus on summoning things and Praem.

Someone might also make a case about building Twil as The Initiate given her interactions with her church, but no. She has a connection the church, but her inhuman capabilities are far more front and center, and she's very free-thinking meaning that it wouldn't even make sense to give her the Dark Master curse, especially not when she actively flinches around silver and clearly has a Vulnerability.

As for Raine, she's staying firmly in Hard Case territory and while I can't take anymore Hard Case moves, I haven't touched her ability to borrow moves from other playbooks yet. So we'll see about that later.

jessica/yang: unironically think its greatness like jessica was one of the few ideological challenges to yang on the fpa side & even in the whole series she rly represented that political homefront in a way hilde is introduced for the empire jessica is that for the fpa grassroots organizing then in the face of loss is mobilized to rise up against the govt its rly some of the best or rather the most resonant the fpa side gets is thru her imo + her entanglement w yang was even better. usually i hate a rebound but the fact that both jess + yang rly cared about lapp and for eachother n never rly had a chance to admit that to themselves much less eachother before it was too late makes it such a good ship nd rly sets a lotgh precedent [love triangles from the pov of the 'loser' in love..who broke tanaka's heart back ina day]..sunglasses is to yang as locket is to reinhard. ova needed sunglasses yang

reuenthal/elfriede: also unironically think its greatness. elfriede is one of the best characters in lotgh to me . she literally only had 10 minutes of screentime, and 6 of them were like “you’re doomed to die ingloriously and i wanna be the bullet that ends your life”. reuenthal is like please, id gladly welcome it, if you knew how to use that gun woman. thats so romantical to me. unironically my fave type of hets r either jessyang or reufriede toxic. i do support queering reufriede its literally ripe in ova canon.

dominique/rubinsky: dominique is a citygirl in my canon, she wanted rubinsky as a come up for her career & got entangled in his ??? lotgh ‘logic’ defying actual logic plots. loved her snitching to oberstein in the end.

annerose/kircheis: i think kircheis really loved her like he rly did but i have a hard time getting a grasp on annerose’s feelings + how much of her feelings were ‘sieg is a safe boy’ (in that hes not a 70+ yr old emperor) & later on entangled in her feelings toward reinhard in feeling like they were both responsible for kircheis death

reinhard/hilde: they have to be miserable + not ‘oo guy fucks the one girl of the group’ or even reufriede miserable but really and truly. miserable. i cant see them as having feelings for eachother. i think hilde feels a lot of grievances at taking this subsitute of kircheis (+ annerose) in the emotional aspect for reinhard . mfw i joined for the political coup & became someone’s workwife my hc for their first time is that rein had the worst stroke game (he was wine drunk) + called her kircheis when he came. god (tanaka) had to send reuenthal to his maker bc seeing this happen to His Kaiser wouldve rendered him apopletic
