DIFFERENT THIS TIME — spencer reid
synopsis: things are different this time when you finally understand why spencer has been acting off these past few weeks.
warnings/tags: angst, angst with a implied happy ending, improper use of drugs, addiction, spencer reid x social worker!reader, they’re friends and also neighbours, this is s8 and s2 reid at the same time in my head, whatever works for you. fluff/angst
a/n: my first piece for criminal minds! it’s angsty as hell forgive me but yeah, the title was inspired by a song of the same title by cornelia murr!

spencer has changed.
you are no fbi profiler but you can see the signs. he’s more shifty, more sercretive, he talks less, he eats less. spencer is more irritable than usual and it worries you.
sure you just may be worrying too much, it’s in your nature as a social worker to do so, but when you open the door to his apartment it is a mess. clothes and books are strewn across the floor, dishes and boxes of takeout piled up in the kitchen.
however in true spencer reid fashion they still have a semblance of order to them. you don’t bother trying to establish your own order within his own, so instead you take a snoop around.
his plants still look healthy, so it does look like he has been tending to something and it's not himself. the thought of that makes your heart pang a little. spencer was always the one helping others but in the one instance he had every right to be selfish and prioritise himself over work he didn't.
you figure it probably says more about his spirit and all but you're not here to do some soul searching. the curtains drawn haphazardly allow for a little bit of light to peek through in the otherwise dark apartment.
“spencer?” you call his name out into the void of his apartment, the sound reverberating around the place, the charms of the high ceilings that came pre built in his apartment. no response.
soft whimpers can be heard from the bathroom and you edge closer, not wanting to startle him so suddenly. you turn the doorknob and the sight that confronts you breaks you the most than any other case you’ve worked on.
he’s slumped against the bathtub, his sleeves rolled up revealing the track marks that he’s managed to hide with his vast array of cardigans and long sleeved shirts. all you can make out in his babbles are two names. one male, one female. a reminder of his extensive past that he revealed to you in bits and pieces.
the names don’t linger in your mind for long, not when he lies there helpless and his amber eyes remain vacant. your hands frantically search for a pulse, shaking when you press two fingers against his wrist. one beat after another but it’s weak and thready.
your head spins with things you should do, like the more rational choice of calling his friends, his family—hell even the hospital but even in his state, this would unfortunately open pandora’s box and you knew that spencer loved his job more than anything.
so when spencer rasps out a quiet “no” when you reach for his phone, you acquiesced. you helped him sit up right, his cold and clammy hands that slightly trembled sending a wave of sadness over you. this wasn’t the spencer you knew.
after a quick google search and several minutes of going back and forth with spencer, who looked like he’d rather eat glass than visit the hospital, you help him into bed, bundling him up the blankets that were on hand. the soup you made for him earlier, sits there uneaten but at least he ate the crackers and cheese.
you’re thankful for the small victories.
even though you wanted to give him some space, it didn’t stop you from periodically checking his vitals just in case there was a sudden change. spencer was grateful for you checking in on him it made this part less harder than it needed to be.
“please stay,” he calls out his voice quiet, trying to hide the desperation and loneliness in his voice but it comes in the form of a broken plea, from a broken man.
you figured that you could get to your apartment and back in no less than 15 minutes to grab your laptop and other essentials in order for you to get settled here.
“yeah, just give me a sec.” you say whilst sniffling, the cold already creeping into the building. when spencer is more up to it, you have to tell him to complain to his landlord because another year with a busted heater is a nightmare for everyone—particularly him who was prone to cold hands and feet in the winter.
you quickly slip out, leaving him alone for a while before you return with the essentials at hand. your announcement of your arrival falls on deaf ears as you walk in to a sleeping spencer sprawled out on his bed. the pained and sorrowful expression that had been burned into your mind had is replaced by a more peaceful one.
the sight alone was enough to make you feel at ease, knowing that spencer is somewhat okay, you just hope that one day he’s able to feel it too.

Thank you ❤️ omg I love that It was beautiful, I beg for an equally sweet part 2. It makes me feel all lovely and warm inside your such a good writer, I love all your work. thank you so much for writing these. I love it can you make part two when the baby comes Please Part 2 please 🥺🥺🙏🙏
Warnings: Labour! very very intense descriptions of a very difficult Labour/ Blood / medical tools / improper use of medical equipment / surgery / 1800's doctoring (Which I feel is a category all it's own) / And many other Dark elements!
I pushed my body up hearing my back crack as I stretched, given my body had been shoved into the absolute minimum of the bed. But I didn't want to complain I know she hadn't done it on purpose but she was tired and sore, and just wanted the space in the bed to stretch herself out.
I rubbed my face a little and grabbed my watch from the side, I needed to get going. I forced myself to get up but I couldn't move as a hand gripped my shirt. I chuckled and Turned seeing her not even awake enough to open her little eyes.
"Don't Go, Jack." She pleaded barely awake,
"I have to, I have surgery today." I reminded her "I'll be back before you know it," I told her as I stroked her cheek and kissed her closed eyelids and then the tip of her nose.
She let my shirt go, so I climbed out of bed and got dressed for the day all with her laid sleepily watching me, she stroked her bump almost invitingly like she was trying to make the bed with her and baby look as inviting as possible.
Which I have to admit was working.
"I'll be back as soon as Surgery's done," I told her as I headed back to bed as I did up my waistcoat, I knelt my knee on the sheets and kissed her sweet lips "I promise."
"Okay..." She smiled.
"Take care of little one for me," I told her kissing her bump,
"I will, Have a nice day Jack." She Yawned almost drifting off to sleep as she said it.
"You too, Love you" I smiled, but before I had even got to the door I heard her little wheezes as she nodded off to sleep again, I chuckled a little "Sleepy Mummy, Well Daddies off to work." I cooed I gave her bump one more kiss before heading downstairs, grabbing some toast from the kitchen, "Elis?"
"Yes, Doctor Dawkins!" She jumped as she came back in from pegging the laundry out,
"Keep an eye on her for me?"
"Course Sir," She nodded.
I took my toast and my bag, left the house and headed off to the hospital in the dim morning light, but the moment I got there chaos ensued. Not sure why it surprised me as Chaos almost always did occur.
There had been a bar fight with some group of sailors arguing with another group and before anyone knew where they were we had a hospital full of black eyes, broken noses, and god only knows what kinda damage. Sneed was pouting as usual barely actually helping at all, and Prof was drunk off his arse held up in his office to keep him from causing even more problems. I rushed around like a man possessed every time I glanced at the clock the day had disappeared some more. In the few free moments, my mind had as I wrapped bandages and went from place to place I thought of y/n. Of course, I did.
I hoped she was keeping herself well, even if every day I left her I was fearful given the state of her pregnancy, the baby would be along any day now and her stomach had even dropped so I knew it wouldn't be long.
By the time I actually got to surgery, you know the ONE thing I was coming into work to do today! was finally set up and organized I was already tired, so I just wanted to get this over and done with so I could head home and crawl into bed.
But... Things became difficult quickly, I hate when Surgery doesn't go to plan. And Just as it got worse the doors opened.
"Alright, The Surgeon is here!" Prof slurred as he came though still not sobered up,
"Sir I-"
"Dawkins, Leave this in the hands of the professional,"
"....Yes sir." I sighed moving away and handing him the knife, I didn't want to but I knew if I didn't he'd call me insulant and I'd be out of a job. I moved back but still did my best to direct him in the right way given he could barely even hold the blade straight "Sir? SIR!" I had to bolt across the table, pushed him out of the way and try to fix his drunken mistake, I rushed around as quickly as I could to try and fix this and keep him alive, I managed to stabilize him and get him half sewn up before he gave up from shock- "Fuck-" I sighed throwing my knife on the table running a hand through my hair tried to clean the tone of blood on my hands.
I was angry, frustrated, exhausted, but... at least it's over.
"Dr Dawkins?" A voice spoke up,
Ohh god no what now! I turned on my heels and immediately panicked.
"Elis?"
"I-It's-" she began nervously blood across her hands and apron,
"Y/n?!" I yelled and she nodded,
I didn't even hesitate, Grabbed my bag and my tools matching out like I was on Military order,
"Dawkins? Where do you think you going?" Sneed cornered me in the main entrance hall, and he forced me to stop and blocked my exit with his smug grin, his arms behind his back as he leant forward he does in that arrogant way so he could talk down to me like I was a child, "You still have patients to see to on the ward."
I wanted to deck him for preventing my leaving, but I did my best to be elegant "Dr Sneed, With all due respect, I have been working since four O'clock this morning, I have seen every one of MY patients on that ward, So I'm asking you if you'd wind awfully sodding off out of my bloody way."
"Get back on that ward. Or I'll have you thrown there."
"My wife. is in labour. MOVE!"
"You mean your whore?" He smirked
I didn't hesitate I decked him as hard as I could and left, I didn't care what trouble I'd be in I wasn't going to allow him to keep me there. Elis Took my things and I bolted home as fast as I possibly could, my body tried, beyond exhausted but fueled by the pure need to see her.
I pushed open the door as it had been left unlocked and bolted up to the bedroom.
I could hear her screams before I even opened the door.
Everything was the same as I left it, but the fire was smothered by the pile of tissues, rags and such like. The metallic twang of blood in the air was so much you could almost taste it. And the most horrific sight that could be imagined.
Y/n lay on her back in the bed, her body twisting, and squirming, her nightie around her hips, the white cotton flooded heavy with her blood, the bedsheets coated with it almost directly from her as if some hellish blood-soaked monster had crawled out of her, A damp rag beside her that Elis had clearly made up with lavender to soak on her head but it was a little late for that. Her head would throw back as she screamed. I found the sound... so utterly chilling that I froze up.
It took me two years to grow accustomed to the sight of blood without growing wozy, even longer to feel comfortable, cutting limbs, and organs apart. But still, even now, the screaming is a sound that rattles my bones. It's a sound no doctor can unhear, the sound of unrelenting pain. I found Labor screaming was always the worst, as it is endless and unforgiving, and there is so little you can do as a doctor to help other than hold their hand and let them suffer.
Even worse so... Given, That's Y/n. My Y/n.
I had never heard her scream with such agony in her voice. Tears streaming down her face. Her body contorted as it had no other outfit for this level of pain.
I forced myself out of my state and rushed to her side holding her hand "I'm here! I'm here! You're gonna be okay." I muttered half to myself if I'm honest, quickly checking her over to see what state she was in "Alright, Yep this is... definitely labour."
"Thank you, Jack, I hadn't figured that OUT!" She yelled
"Contractuions when did they start?"
"About six this morning" She whined
"Six! this morning! and only NOW did someone TELL ME!"
"You were busy," She said,
"How bad were they at six?"
"Small, got worse. and worse and now where - AHHHHHYHHHHHH!" She screamed as another contraction ripped through her,
"Okay... just let me know when the next one is?" I told her as I opened my watch and counted the seconds between her contractions "Oooohhhh okay! That is uhhh" I nodded, I quickly moved to the end of the bed holding her nightie "Is it uhh it okay if I?"
"Go for it, You put the damn thing in there,"
I couldn't help but chuckle at her sarcastic tone even though her contractions, and I checked how dilated she was, and... uhhh she wasn't. "Uhhhhh..."
"Uhh? I don't like Uhh Jack!" She snapped,
"You're not dilated... You've been having early labour contractions for a minimum of twelve hours why the bloody hell are you not dilated?" I asked as I tried very hard not to panic,
"I don't know! ASK MY VARGINA!" She screamed
Finally, Elis arrived with my tools so I could get to work making sure things went as smoothly as they could do but the blood was still troubling me, Until I realized
"Then what's all the- Oh no,"
"You know you have a terrible bedside manner doctor. oddly enough, Oh no! is not something a pregnant lady wants to hear!"
"The blood is your mucus Plug."
"My what!"
"Muscas plug the... Plug, the stopper in the sink that is your womb, it's out, that's all the blood, which means... it's broken." I explained, "How long ago did you start bleeding?"
"Not long ago, I saw blood and told Elis to get you."
"If you're not dilated then baby is going to try and force its way out of you... as it is. without your hips being wide enough for the head."
"English!"
"Meaning... either it's going to tear you apart... Or it's head is going to get stuck."
"OHhh fan FUCKING tastic!"
"I can give you an injection, it might make it hurt more but it should force your body to realize there's a baby trying to get out of it and uhh open the doors as it were." I explained quickly giving her it but it only made her scream louder "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." I muttered knowing what I was doing to her, and understanding the horrific pain I was putting her through but I held her hand every second I didn't need it, even if admittedly my hand was numb and her nails had drawn blood at some points.
"Jack... I'm scared." Her voice was weak, tearful, as if on the brink of death,
"You're going to be okay. I promise you. I know it hurts. I know it's scary. but this.. this is everything you have ever been made to do, your body is made for this, and all of it will be worth it when you hold our baby in your arms," I told her giving her a sweet kiss,
"It's not made to do it comfortably..." She cried "Jack... Please I don't wanna die."
"You're not going to die," I told her almost ordering her as if I was willing her, to force her to stay alive. "I promise it's going to be okay" I told her trying to make sure things moved as they should "I know its hard, this is your first it's not going to be easy, Baby number three, four and five will just glide on out" I joked but the look on her face... that was a badly timed joke.
"I am never. letting you sleep with me again!" She screamed, She's just kidding... I hope.
"Think about it, you have an advantage over most ladies,"
"And what's that?"
"You married a doctor" I winked "Okay, there we go your dilating now. it shouldn't be too long but as soon as that baby starts moving we are going to have to act fast,"
"It's already moving."
"What?"
She grabbed my shirt "I can feel it moving. like a snake under my skin. this baby is coming!" She yelled in my face
"Your water hasn't broken yet it can't be- and it should have especially if your mucus plug is gone the water has no protection it would burst on your cervix at least," I told her trying to keep her calm, but she was right, this baby was coming, she wasn't dilated enough yet, and the water hadn't broke. I Knew every second risked our baby and Y/n... I knew the other option. And so did she.
"Jack. Get. It. Out. of. Me."
"Y/n I can't-"
"You're a surgeon. if anyone can you can."
"Y/n I can't."
"Jack... Please. I love you. I trust you more than anyone. Please... Make it stop."
"No woman has ever survived a Ceaseron section. The shock alone would will you. if it doesn't me moving your organs around will. Or the blood loss. or me cutting through something important. Or infection!" I explained "...You can't ask me, you cut you open knowing I'll kill you."
"Even if it saves the baby?" She cried,
"Do not make me choose between you," I begged her,
"Then I'll decide." She snapped "Save him Jack. Please."
"You cannot ask this of me-" I cried
"Please... Or both of us will die."
"...will you give me time? one hour. If I can't feel the baby's head by then... I'll do it. Will you Give me one hour!?"
"One. But I don't know how much more I can take."
I kissed her with as much love and passion as I could before I got what I needed from my bag, the tool wasn't meant for this, but... rumour had spiralled that it could be used for such things, I had never tested to know for sure... I didn't imagine I'd be testing on my own wife.
"This... is gonna hurt," I told her and she nodded so I did my best to be careful holding her leg to comfort her as I needed them close by and her hand was too far, as I used the tool as gently as I could, to forceably break her water.
The moment I did fluid began to replace blood, and her screams intensified but her body almost knew now what it had to do. Her body knew it had no choice. and was fueled by the natural female power to bring life into the world.
"Perfect. Perfect. you're doing so good." I told her holding her hand in both of mine even if we were both coated in blood, I walked her through her breathing and soon enough she needed to really push, so I directed her as best I could through her tired screams and tears, I did TRY and help her breath... honestly I also forgot at times.
Soon enough it became time, I called Eli in as a standby nurse, and I made sure to open Y/n's legs as much as possible, "Comfy? Or do you want another position?"
"He went in like that. He can come out like that" She joked between her gasps
"Okay... be ready, this all happens a bit fast," I told Elis and she nodded so I turned to Y/n "Y/n... I am, so so sorry for what is about to happen to you. I am going to be honest with you, this is going to be .... the worst pain of your whole life But I will do what I can to make it as quick and painless as possible, I'm here and I love you." I told her giving her a sweet kiss and stroking her cheek "And Nothing bad is going to happen to you. I promise." I told her before I checked her again and it was time, "You're favourite memory, take yourself there now." I told her just as it began.
Her screams blood-curdling, her body trying to fight itself, tears streaming down her cheeks, that sound, that image, would haunt my nightmares.
And... I may be a surgeon, But still.
Nothing quite prepares you for the sight of your wife... as your child's head leaves her body slowly stretching the skin as it forces its way out.
I walked her through her slow breaths making sure she didn't push and rip everything apart, until finally he was out, and quickly I made Elis pick him up and wrap him warmly. and by some luck almost immediately she delivered her placenta almost as if it was literally pushed behind him,
"It's done. It's done it's over. it's all over." I told her unable to control my tears as I gave her kisses "It's all over, you did so brilliantly my darling," I smiled making sure the cord was cut and she was set to begin to heal,
"It's over?" she asked understandably very weak,
"It's over. It's all over. you just rest" I cooed "Get your breath back and relax."
"What is it?" She gasped
"A boy Ma'am" Elis Said
"A boy, we have a little boy" I smiled almost in disbelief unable to stop kissing her "I am... So immensely proud of you, I didn't think I could love you anymore but you have proven me wrong."
"Uhh Doctor..." Elis Spoke up and there was fear in her voice,
I quickly moved and she handed him to me as he was wrapped up tight in his blanket.
Not moving. Not breathing.
I did my best not to panic I didn't want to alarm y/n, but panic rushed through me, tears streaming down my face.
"No, No, please... Please, come on little guy, come on, please, Please, Wake up. Wake up. Come on little guy please." I muttered trying everything I could in utter desperation "Please.... Please....Please..." I begged
and by the grace of god!
He coughed spluttered and began to cry wiggling his little arms.
I felt, so unexplainable.
I was proud, joyful, nervous, fearful, on the verge of both passing out, and of tears.
For a moment I held him in my arms by the fire, cradling him in his blanket as he cried freshly meeting the world, and it was as if He and I. Had a moment. Where we are all that exists.
My son, My sweet beautiful son.
"Is he okay?" Y/n woke me from this trance having managed to sit up now, she was clearly exhausted I'm sure I'll never be able to comprehend such exhaustion, but with her sly wicked smile almost... Jealous, but joyous all the same.
I went over being as careful as I could sitting on the bed with her and handing him over to her.
Her face was an utter picture, she glowed with a sweetness I had only seen briefly, her smile so wide, as she held our baby to her chest, he rested on her bare skin and almost went to sleep so content to be in the arms of his mother.
"He's perfect."
"Ummm," she smiled pulling me closer so I could cuddle her as she cuddled him her head on my shoulder
"So, how was labour?"
"Ummm what labour," she giggled
I smiled and kissed her head "I don't think I've ever been so happy."
"Me either Jack" she smiled "You think of a name?"
"I can choose!?"
"Mhm, Our first little boy, you can choose."
Honestly, I hadn't much thought about it, I ran through names in my mind trying to think of something that had meaning, but dignity, but found very little. But... I thought of one name. And I knew it had to be him.
"Sebastian."
"Sebastian," She smiled "It's lovely, Why?"
"... Captain Sebastian Grimm, He's the one who got me out of prison. took me away on a ship. Liked my quick fingers, made me... what I am. I'd still be rotting in a cell if it wasn't for him. Without him... I'd have never even met you."
She smiled and kissed my cheek "Then it's settled. Sebastian Dawkins."
"Sebastian Dawkins," I smiled playing with his little fingers and kissing his sweet head.

Look at Us Now - ch. 13
Fic masterlist
Thank you for your patience ❤️
This chapter is my baby. I know I say this every time, but some of the scenes took me longer to write than entire chapters. So *cracks knuckles* if you don’t like it… just kidding I won’t do anything 😂 but please don’t let me know if that’s the case lmaoo
Words: 4,9k
Warnings: language, postpartum depression
The yet to be named Galathynius-Whitethorn firstborn came into the world on October 19th, after 13 hours of labor.
Rowan almost lost his mind with worry. It was the best day of his life.
Aedion was holding the baby, his eyes darting between Rowan and the little bundle on his arms. “Holy rutting Mala, the baby is Rowan’s.”
Aelin gave him an unamused look from the hospital bed. “You just figured that one out?”
“You don’t get it.” He lifted the baby so her face would be side by side with Rowan’s from Aedion’s point of view. “It’s like he made a girl clone of himself. It’s day one, and she’s already frowning like Whitethorn.”
To be honest, Rowan was more focused on the way Aelin’s cousin was carrying the baby than on his words. Aedion Ashryver wasn’t exactly a graceful person, and watching him carry that very fragile baby made Rowan a little tense.
”Enough of that.” Orlon took the baby from Aedion’s arms, making Rowan’s shoulders drop an inch. “Do you have no clue about what to name her?”
Aelin and Rowan exchanged a look, then she said, “Our favorite so far is Maisie.”
“It’s beautiful!” Philippa beamed, studying Aelin with a fond look while Orlon agreed with her.
Darrow came closer to his husband and cooed at the little one. “It suits her.”
“I don’t know.” Aedion wrinkled his nose. “I like Aedinna better.”
“Aedion,” Philippa cautioned.
Aelin was shooting daggers at him, jaw tight as she grabbed the tissue box from the bedside table.
Rowan went stiff. “That’s enough—“
Smirking, Aedion added, “Or Wiggly Jiggly—“
“Shut up!” Aelin aimed the tissue box at her cousin and sent it flying across the room. “You’re such a fucking loser!”
“Aw.” Aelin’s cousin beamed. “Is it the first time you curse in front of the baby?”
Instead of the usual glaring that was expected, Aelin’s face faltered. She clamped her lips together and blinked, but at the same time the baby started fussing on Orlon’s arms, then he immediately gave her back to Aelin, not knowing what to do.
Enough of visitors. Rowan’s blood was beginning to boil under his skin, so he looked at his watch. His online sources said the visits shouldn’t be longer than 30 minutes, and they’ve been here for 32 already. It was time to kick everyone out.
“Aedion. Out,” Rowan said through gritted teeth, low but stern. He didn’t give a fuck that Aelin’s cousin was raised as her brother or how they’d tease each other. She got upset, and Rowan only had one job. He gave Orlon, Darrow and Philippa something that could at least resemble a smile. “Please.”
The elder ones of the family were good sports about being kicked out, just taking a second to say their goodbyes before leaving.
Except that when Rowan was holding the door for them to leave, Darrow asked to talk outside and led him a few steps away from everyone, enough to give them some privacy.
“I won’t apologize for putting you in jail.”
Rowan gave him a stiff nod. “I don’t expect you to, sir.”
“Good.” Colonel Darrow gave him a guarded look. “But I was upset, and I put Military Law before my family’s trust. That’s not something I’m proud of. It put me in enough trouble at home.”
Rowan would never know what happened in his house besides Aelin moving out, and he might not want to. Whatever his intentions were, Rowan broke the law, and his sentence for improper sexual conduct was fair. The only person to blame was himself.
“Because you are family now, Rowan, and I want you to feel welcome with Orlon and I.”
Rowan’s breath hitched until his body restarted so he could swallow a lump in his throat. “Thank you, sir.”
“But don’t fuck up again. I’m still your superior at work.”
There was not a chance Rowan would have sex inside base again. Not after going to the guardhouse for it, not after Aelin.
“There’ll be nothing but teaching at the Training Center, Colonel.” Rowan did his best to bite back a smile. “I have everything I could ask for at home.”
Darrow gave one last tap on Rowan’s shoulder. “I’m happy for you, kid.”
He watched Aelin’s family leave—his family too now, not his words—but not for long. He quickly went back to the room, his eyes meeting Aelin’s as soon as he entered the room again.
She looked nothing short of heavenly today in the Air Force’s maternity ward.
Aelin moved to the side a little, silently telling him to join her in the bed. She didn’t need to ask twice. There was a lot of paperwork waiting for Rowan, but it wouldn’t be done until they decided the baby’s name.
They just stayed there for a moment, watching their baby’s rosy cheeks—she was all bundled up, so it was all they could see—the loudest thing in the room being the AC running.
Rowan chewed on his lip, thinking about her telling her uncle she liked ‘Maisie’ best. “You don’t mind naming her after a junkie’s song?”
“What? No.” Aelin gave him a confused look. “The name is so cute, and my dad was a fan. I thought you were the one who didn’t want it.”
”You know…” a gentle kiss on the crown of Aelin’s head. “I have really good memories attached to that song.”
“So?”
Rowan caressed his daughter’s chubby cheeks. “I think Maisie is ready for another nap.”
Aelin smiled against his chest. ”So is Maisie’s mother.”
He brushed her hair back with his fingers and said, “Me too. Maybe I should teach Maisie’s first lesson on adulthood and make her fill her own paperwork.”
Aelin mentioned to pinch his side, but Rowan grabbed her hand before the minor assault. He restrained his hug as much as he could, careful with her tired postpartum body, and cuddled Aelin to sleep.
Of all the pain Rowan had to endure in his life, his favorite so far was feeling his cheeks hurt from grinning so much. All because of his girls.
He was living with Aelin, the mother of his child. Rowan had the whole package already, he just needed to convince Aelin of one thing.
Rowan held her tightly, and there was something in his mind as he did, repeating itself like a broken record while he felt it take over his body and soul.
He loved her
He loved her
He loved her
˜˜
Turns out pursuing Aelin while having a newborn was harder than Rowan thought.
Between tending Maisie and giving Aelin space to recover from giving birth, the last thing on Rowan’s mind was his own dick. Actually, pursuing the woman he loved in hopes to become an official family with her went beyond ‘thinking with his dick’, but that’s how Rowan felt when he considered asking her that when she looked so… Aelin was far from fragile, but she still seemed to be overwhelmed by postpartum hormones, or whatever made new moms sad.
Rowan opened the fridge and ran a hand through his face, not missing the sharpness of his unshaved cheek. Did Maisie drink all those bottles already? They were prioritizing breastfeeding, but Rowan would do anything to let Aelin rest as much as she could.
He was so sure her insomnia would end with the pregnancy, but she seemed to sleep even less now that Maisie was here.
“Rowan!”
He blinked, jerking towards the stove, where his mom was. “What?”
At first, they dismissed his mother when she first offered to spend a few weeks with them until things were settled, but now Rowan thanked her every night for insisting to stay. He had just realized how demanding a two-week-old can be.
“Were you listening to me?”
Rowan grimaced. “Can’t say I was, sorry.”
Rory’s shoulders dropped, nothing but fondness in her gaze. “Did you talk to Aelin?”
Rowan settled close to his mother to wash a few dirty bottles. “She told me she’s fine.”
His mother had her I-know-it-all look, the same one she gave him when Rowan was a teenager grew like a tree, but wouldn’t admit he was taking workout supplements.
“Could you not?” Rowan gave her a look to rival her Mom Look. He failed miserably.
She was turning the beef around on the pan, frowning at the half-cooked meat. “I’ve seen a lot of new moms, Rowan. I know what a happy one looks like.”
He flexed his jaw, scrubbing the bottle harder than necessary. “If you’ve seen a lot of new moms, you know they get overwhelmed after birth.”
Rory turned back to work on dinner. “It’d be a lot easier on her if she had an actual partner, you know?”
His neck stiffened, his pulse faster in a heartbeat. Rory’s hints about him marrying Aelin had gotten less and less subtle as the months passed. As much as Rowan wanted to do that, those comments still irked him.
“You’re telling me she won’t be happy until we’re married and I put a white picket fence around the house?”
“I’m not telling you to marry her because of whatever people my age say a family should look like.” Rory gave him a dagger-sharp look. “I’m telling you to marry Aelin because you’re in love, but you two don’t seem to know what to do with that.”
His chest tightened, and Rowan wouldn’t look Rory in the eye. “It’s complicated.”
Her posture relaxed, and her eyes and tone were a lot softer when she said, “It’s not. You see what you want, and you seize it.”
Rowan felt his throat closing, and he just rushed with the rest of the dishes before leaving to check on Aelin and Maisie. For Mala’s sake, was his mother this desperate for a daughter-in-law?
He stood by the open door, watching them before announcing his arrival. Aelin’s hand was gentle but restless as she patted Maisie’s back, her eyes distant as she tried to burp the little girl.
Rowan would act on his feelings when the time was right, he was happy to just watch his family in the meanwhile.
And Aelin… she was recovering from giving birth. That’s the reason she wouldn’t get out of bed.
He sat beside her on the bed. “She’s done feeding?”
“Not quite.”
Rowan extended both hands. “Can I try?”
Since the usual technique wasn’t working, Rowan decided to try something he saw online. He held Maisie against his chest and shoulder as usual, but gently swiveled her bottom instead of patting her back.
Until the cutest little burp echoed through Aelin’s room. A completely different experience from the ones he’s used to hearing at the Air Force’s mess hall.
”There she is.” He kissed Maisie’s belly and held her in front of him, father and daughter staring at each other with the same pine green eyes. “Did you like Mommy’s dinner?”
“She better enjoy it while she can, that’s the only dinner I can make.”
Rowan squeezed her hand. “I’ll take care of that once she grows some teeth.”
She leaned against the bedpost, lips flat. “Of course you will.”
His breath caught inside his chest. Did he say something wrong?
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing.” Aelin bowed her head and grimaced. “I didn’t mean to snap, it’s just—“ she ran both hands through her hair. “I feel like I’m always messing up with Maisie.”
Rowan hummed, moving himself and the baby closer to Aelin. “I think Maisie disagrees, since you’re very clearly her favorite person.”
This line was supposed to make Aelin smile, but it completely backfired now that she was staring at the ceiling and blinking back tears.
“Wanting me is just her instinct. She’s biologically inclined to do that.”
He caressed her shoulder, trying to comfort her in any way he could. “Instinct or not, I still think you’re a great mom.”
“And you’re like a dream dad that came straight from a diaper ad.“ She gave him a weak smile. “It’s annoying sometimes. I love it.”
Aelin leaned her head against his shoulder and they stayed there, savoring the moment until Maisie decided it was enough.
It wouldn’t be long until the time to act on his fluttering stomach came. Rowan would pour his heart out, put a ring on her finger, and have as many children as she wanted.
He’d do it when the time was right.
˜˜
“Who’s ready for some beach-themed therapy?” Yrene greeted them into her office with a huge grin, holding a beach ball with emotions written on it.
Aelin threw her head back, laughing. “What’s that?”
That made Rowan’s chest fill with warmth, and it was a well-known fact that he could live his whole life gravitating around that laughter alone. He flexed his hands, then gave in to the ache in his fingers and fondly brushed them against the middle of her back. Aelin gave him a quick smile and turned back to their therapist.
Yrene gave them space to walk inside while explaining, “We use this activity mostly with teenagers, but I thought it’d be nice to get you in the mood for your trip.”
After they discussed last week’s homework, she explained that it consisted of passing the ball around, reading the first word that pops in and telling one time they felt that way. Easy.
“Furious.” Aelin gaped at the ball, and then at Yrene. “That’s a way to start.”
“Now you tell us a time when your family made you furious,” their therapist said.
Aelin squinted her eyes at him. “When you cut Maisie’s hair without telling me.”
Rowan grimaced. Fatherhood was hard, but nothing could prepare him for dealing with his daughter’s hair. There were so many different creams, he always got the hairstyles wrong, and she’d scream bloody murder while getting her hair rinsed.
So Rowan did the logical thing and cut his toddler’s hair around the chin.
Maisie liked it, but Aelin yelled so much at him she nearly ruptured his eardrums.
She had one arm holding the ball against her, the other on her hip. “You have nothing to say for yourself?”
“It grew back.”
Aelin threw the ball at him a little harsher than necessary. “Your turn.”
By the looks of it, there was a reason therapists chose a beach ball, and not something heavier and therefore deadlier to do this dynamic with.
“Thankful.” Rowan twirled the ball in his hands, smiling inwardly. “When Maisie trashed my house while I took a nap and you helped me clean it up.”
His memory broke her angry stance, making Aelin’s shoulders relax. “You could’ve pressed charges against Maisie for what she did to your house.”
“Technically, I could arrest her myself, but I don’t think the Brigadier would approve.”
Aelin rolled her eyes, like she always did when someone joked about her being the Air Force’s nepo baby, and he passed her the beach ball.
“Appreciated.” Aelin had a wistful smile on, and looked as if it was a crystal glass showing her past. “When I was pregnant, you’d leave the house in the middle of the night to buy something I was craving.”
Rowan’s heart constricted with the memory, but he knew he’d do it all over again. Getting to know her, living with her while they watched Maisie grow made those some of the best days of his life.
Flooded with memories, he almost missed the beach ball when Aelin passed it to him. It was like time stopped when Rowan grabbed it and read the first word his eyes settled in, his chest caving and the floor falling beneath his feet. Should he lie? There was only one time he felt—
“What’s the word, Rowan?” Yrene asked when silence stretched for too long.
He swallowed. “Betrayed.”
“What?” Aelin let out a low, shaky laugh. “I never betrayed—“
“When you asked me to leave.”
Aelin was rooted to her spot, gaping until she blurted, “How was that a betrayal?”
Yrene cleared her throat. “Let’s remember this should be a safe space to share our—“
“You want me to be petty now?” Rowan shook his head and started finger-counting everything he barely remembered now, but weighted on him six years ago. “You were my student. You had a boyfriend. I went against every rule I had for you.” Rowan’s mouth opened and closed, his breathing ragged as he voiced every feeling he ditched over the last six years, like weed growing from small cracks in an old road he buried with asphalt day after day. “I went to *jail* for you. I fixed your entire house for you—“
“I didn’t force you to do any of that—“
“But you forced me to leave!“ Rowan sat on the couch and scraped his palms against his face, trying to think of the right words. ”I know things were shitty, but you were clutching Maisie to your chest when you told me to pack my things and leave!” He held one finger up while holding his head down and took one deep breath. And another. And another. Until the boiling in his blood calmed down.
He continued after a moment, “I didn’t mean to snap. I know that wasn’t exactly a betrayal, but emotions don’t always align with facts, or whatever Yrene has been telling us.”
Aelin sat by his side, reading every line of his wretched expression with her own, and said, “I wish I’d done things differently, but I couldn’t make the right choices because my mind wasn’t in the right place.” She playfully elbowed his side with a small, tentative smile. “Or whatever Yrene has been telling us.”
Rowan slowly nodded, knowing he’d mull this words over and over after this session ended. “I wish I’d done things differently too. I can’t stop thinking about every time I messed up that year since…” Since Ansel suggested that he was the reason Aelin kicked him out, but he wouldn’t open this Pandora‘s box now. Rowan sighed, all the weight of these six years heavy on his shoulders. “I‘ve been trying to puzzle things together, and the only conclusion I get to is that I failed you and Maisie.”
Aelin squeezed his hand. “You never did.”
She meant well, but hearing that she regretted her decision and that it wasn’t his fault wasn’t reassuring at all. It only sent him back to square one, even more confused.
Aelin took a deep, pained breath and closed her eyes, then fiddled with his fingers. She must’ve read something on his face, because she added, “I wish I could give you a better answer and explain those last few days to you, but I don’t remember Maisie’s first months very well.”
Rowan caressed her wrist with his thumb, not knowing what to say. It was odd that she didn’t remember, but—
Yrene cleared her throat. “And remember that if you’re feeling overwhelmed by your own thoughts, I’ll be happy to help you with that.”
Beating himself up for every little thing he did six years ago was a natural response for losing the love of his life. Rowan had no idea why his therapist was so obsessed with him starting individual sessions.
He looked back at Aelin, noticing her unguarded expression and how the touch of her hand covering his wired and soothed him at the same time.
Right now, he just needed one thing.
˜˜
“Why is this taking so long?” Maisie whined from the backseat of the car they just rented.
Rowan had an ‘I told you so’ ready, but it wouldn’t help with anything now. With a plane trip to Southeastern Doranelle and a long drive to his parents’ house on the same day, he knew getting into the long drive-thru line would only make Maisie stressed. The problem is that his daughter was as stubborn as she was impatient.
“I don’t know, honey.” Aelin gasped from the passenger, eyes wide in a display of theatrics she only did to entertain Maisie. “Maybe they’re ordering the whole menu.”
“They’re taking forever.” The little girl crossed her arms, unamused. “Why did everyone’s daddy have to grab lunch today?” Maisie was doing distressed, dramatic gestures with her arms. “Where’s all the mommies?”
Rowan’s spine went rigid and he frowned at his daughter. “What do you mean?”
“Rowan…” Aelin grimaced and bit back her laughter at the same time. “You’re a slow driver. I thought you knew that already.”
His eyes widened. “I’m not!”
Aelin threw her head back, laughing. “You are! And Maisie has your road rage.”
He shook his head, but swallowed his retort when the car in front of them got their bag. He hit the brake pedal, hands clutching the steering wheel as he leaned forwards, breathlessly waiting… but the car wouldn’t move.
“Ugh!” Maisie looked up and sighed. “Daddy, do you want me to get out and push so they’ll move?”
Her “threat” worked like a charm, now that the car moved and they were one step closer to getting a meal. Rowan’s lips were pinched together, restrained, but when he saw Aelin’s shoulders shaking with her head between her hands, he silently rested his head on the steering wheel and did the same.
It should be illegal to feel this amused at his own daughter’s frustration, but Maisie was too cute with road rage.
After they got their food and went back to the road, Aelin put on the Little Mermaid soundtrack again. The girls were singing at the top of their lungs, and Rowan could finally agree that this was better than having the GPS on and not taking a wrong turn every fifteen minutes. He didn’t remember how many times he listened to Under the Sea today, but he remembered getting warm, funny feelings in his chest every time their voices got louder than the song.
Before the trip really began, Rowan already accepted that the vacation was theirs, and he was just the chauffeur.
He wasn’t supposed to love this idea this much.
However, his mind was half there, half on the last therapy session they had. It hadn’t left his mind ever since he stepped out of Yrene’s office.
Aelin told him very clearly she wished she’d done things differently.
Restless nights, charged pauses when they spoke, fingers hovering over his phone’s keyboard. Rowan felt like he was on the edge of a cliff, on the verge of jumping and asking a detailed explanation of what she meant, in whatever way that would answer all the questions in his head. Or at least the most important one.
“Use your words, boy and ask her!” They sang in the background of Rowan’s anxiety. “If the time is right and the time is tonight, go on and kiss the girl!”
Rowan paused the song with a heartbeat faster than it should, but not without groans of protest. “What’s that?”
“Kiss the Girl!” Maisie whined. “Daddy, I want the song back.”
“Okay, okay.” He put the song back, feeling a tad guilty for disrupting an already stressed Maisie. “Sorry, kiddo.”
Rowan only relaxed when the song ended, though, and half of the weight of his shoulders left his body later, when they finally got to their destination.
Maisie burst into his parents’ beach house as soon as her door unlocked like the little cannonball she was.
“Go on.” Rowan nudged Aelin forward. “I got the bags.”
Stubborn as the day she was born, Aelin took her bag from his hand. “I’m not gonna barge into your parent’s house like I’m their five-year-old granddaughter.”
This was ridiculous, considering how much Rory and Owen loved her, but he understood why she was a little guarded now. Rowan came here with Maisie once or twice a year, but it was Aelin’s first time visiting.
“Knowing my parents, they might even like it.” Rowan snorted, shaking his head. “They already act like you’re the daughter they never had, anyway.”
He took two steps towards the house, but Aelin didn’t follow. She was staring, frozen with an indecipherable look aimed at him, and the realization of what he’d just said rooted him to the ground, his body so heavy it expanded to his core.
This week at therapy. If she was looking at him like this, it meant that being part of the family to his mother meant something to her. Every single interaction now led him back to therapy.
She dumped him, but she wished she’d done things differently.
Of all the reactions Rowan thought she’d have if he ever voiced the thoughts that made him pace in the middle of the night, holding his hand and apologizing wasn’t one of them.
Maybe he held back for being still used to the explosive reactions he got from her before family therapy, or maybe he knew he’d never say it out loud only to have his fears confirmed.
That he focused on the baby and didn’t pay her enough attention. That he was working too long hours. That his fussiness made him micromanage her mothering—which Rowan was actively trying to stop. That she got trapped with him, then decided she could have more.
But whatever happened that year, she wishes she’d done things differently.
“Aelin!” His mother shouted from the front door, stepping out their way. “I couldn’t believe my ears when Rowan told me you’d come!”
She hugged Rory, finally out of that trance. “Your house is so beautiful.”
His father showed up with Maisie while pleasantries were being exchanged. “About time,” the old man mock-complained.
“Sorry we’re late.” Rowan gave his dad a man hug and got the usual two pats on the back. “Maisie and Aelin turned off the GPS. The voice directions were disturbing their Disney sing-along.”
“Oh, that’s understandable.” Owen picked his granddaughter up, grinning. “I didn’t know you like singing with your mom that much, Maisy Daisy.”
She nodded with all the earnestness a five-year-old could muster. “The songs are fun, and Mommy is really brave.”
“Maisie!” Aelin chastised, her lips somewhere between a gape and a smile. “Why am I ‘brave’ for singing?”
The little girl just giggled and hid her face on her grandpa’s shoulder.
Rowan slowly shook his head, never failing to be amused at his daughter. He was ready to defend Aelin‘s skills, but that was her own sass biting her in the ass. Maisie might’ve gotten the Whitethorn looks, but that fiery personality was all Aelin’s.
On the second floor, Rowan got his usual guest room, but his mother was still showing everything because of Aelin.
“This one I prepared for you.” She was pointing everything around, assuming everyone was catching up. “There’s Sellene’s room, the other is Enda’s. Their kids have a room for themselves, they just asked me to put on a show about a boy and dogs.”
Maisie’s eyes brightened. “Pawtrols.”
“That one!” Rory crouched down enough to be eye to eye with Maisie. “Well, the kids’ room I prepared has a TV and lots of toys.” She pointed at a door down the hall. “You could sleep there with your cousins and leave the other room just to your mom and dad.”
Rowan didn’t know why he was surprised.
Maisie crossed her arms. “No.”
Rory’s face fell. “What.”
The little girl put her foot down, dramatically shaking her head. “I wanna stay with Mommy and Daddy.”
His mother didn’t agree or protest, knowing she was already bordering the line between scheming and being pushy.
“We don’t have to decide now.” Rowan crouched to talk to Maisie, ready to get rid of that weird tension. “You can stay with us for as long as you want, and play during the day or have sleepovers with your cousins when you feel like it.”
Aelin wiggled her eyebrows. “You could have both rooms, Mais.”
The little girl’s eyes lit up with the idea. “Can I have both rooms, Grandma?”
“Of course you can, honey.” Rory grinned at her granddaughter, all the distress from her failed plan vanished already. “You three get settled, everyone’s downstairs.”
When they set the bags on the room, Maisie threw herself on the bed while Aelin excused herself to the bedroom.
Rowan laid on the bed next to his little girl, where the three of them would sleep squashed together. It’d be nice to have some alone time with Aelin, but he was also incapable of saying no to Maisie.
Besides, his mother didn’t need to trap him into anything with Aelin, he’d do it this time. Forget about reading her cues and waiting for the perfect time, he was tired of feeling like his soul was being ripped into threads every time he watched her eyes light up while her lips arch into a smile.
Rowan wished he’d done things differently too, but that had to stop somewhere.
And if he didn’t have a shot with Aelin, he’d at least fight for what he wanted this time.
She walked back into the room, smiled, and laid on the other side of the bed, hugging Maisie as well.
He’d make a move and do everything on his mind in the near future. Right now, he had a family hug to attend.
“Mom? Dad?”
Aelin hummed.
“You’re a slice of bread.”
Rowan frowned. ”I don’t get it.”
Their daughter beamed. “I’m the cheese!”
That earned her a chuckle. Indeed, Maisie was sandwiched between them in a hug.
Aelin smacked a kiss on her cheek. “You’re our Mayomaisie.”

Pest Control Nairobi Keeping Your Home and Business Pest-Free

Nairobi, the bustling capital city of Kenya, is a vibrant hub of activity, offering its residents a dynamic lifestyle and numerous business opportunities. However, like many urban areas, it also comes with its share of challenges—and pest infestations rank high among them. Whether you’re dealing with cockroaches in your kitchen, rats in your office, or termites eating away at your furniture, effective pest control in Nairobi is essential to maintaining a clean, healthy, and comfortable environment.
Pest Control Nairobi
Common Pests in Nairobi
The warm climate and urban setup of Nairobi create an ideal breeding ground for various pests. Here are some of the most common pests in the city:
Cockroaches: Known for their resilience, cockroaches are a common sight in many homes and restaurants in Nairobi. They thrive in warm, humid areas with food and water sources.
Termites: These destructive pests can cause significant damage to wooden structures and furniture. They are often found in areas with high moisture levels.
Mosquitoes: Nairobi’s climate is conducive to mosquito breeding, especially during the rainy season. Mosquitoes are not just a nuisance but also carriers of diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.
Rodents: Rats and mice are common in urban areas, particularly in poorly maintained buildings and areas with improper waste disposal.
Bed Bugs: These tiny pests are notorious for infesting mattresses and furniture, causing sleepless nights and itchy bites.
Ants: From your kitchen to your garden, ants can invade almost any part of your home in search of food.
Why Pest Control Is Important
Ignoring a pest problem can lead to severe consequences for your health, property, and overall quality of life. Here are some reasons why pest control is crucial:
Health Risks: Pests like cockroaches, mosquitoes, and rodents are carriers of diseases. They can contaminate food and water, posing serious health risks to you and your family.
Property Damage: Termites and rodents can cause extensive damage to your property, leading to costly repairs.
Peace of Mind: A pest-free home or business environment provides comfort and peace of mind, allowing you to focus on what matters most.
Compliance: For businesses, especially those in the food and hospitality industries, maintaining a pest-free environment is often a legal requirement.
Professional Pest Control Services in Nairobi
While DIY pest control methods may provide temporary relief, professional pest control services are often the most effective way to eliminate infestations and prevent recurrence. Here’s what professional pest control in Nairobi typically involves:
Pest Control Nairobi
1. Inspection
A thorough inspection is the first step in effective pest control. Professionals assess the extent of the infestation, identify the type of pest, and locate their nesting or breeding sites.
2. Customized Treatment Plans
Based on the inspection, pest control experts develop a tailored plan that addresses your specific needs. This may involve the use of chemical treatments, traps, or eco-friendly solutions.
3. Extermination
The actual extermination process involves eliminating the pests using methods such as spraying, fumigation, or baiting. Professionals ensure that the treatment is safe for humans and pets while being effective against pests.
4. Prevention and Maintenance
Preventive measures are key to long-term pest control. These may include sealing cracks and crevices, improving sanitation, and regular inspections to detect early signs of infestations.
Choosing the Right Pest Control Company in Nairobi
With numerous pest control companies in Nairobi, selecting the right one can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision:
Experience: Look for a company with a proven track record and extensive experience in handling various types of pests.
Licensing and Certification: Ensure the company is licensed and employs certified pest control professionals.
Reputation: Check online reviews and ask for recommendations from friends or family.
Eco-Friendly Options: If you’re environmentally conscious, choose a company that offers green pest control solutions.
Guarantees: Opt for a service provider that offers a satisfaction guarantee or free follow-up treatments if the problem persists.
DIY Pest Control Tips
While professional services are the most effective, there are some steps you can take to minimize the risk of infestations:
Maintain Cleanliness: Regularly clean your home, especially the kitchen and dining areas, to remove food crumbs and spills.
Seal Entry Points: Close gaps and cracks in walls, windows, and doors to prevent pests from entering.
Proper Waste Management: Dispose of garbage properly and keep trash bins tightly sealed.
Eliminate Standing Water: Remove stagnant water from your compound to prevent mosquito breeding.
Store Food Properly: Keep food in airtight containers to deter ants, rodents, and cockroaches.

I didn’t realize how much he loved me until one night as we laid in bed, he told me that if I ever died, he would throw cigarette butts into the duck pond and watch them die slowly and in agony. Even though ducks are his favorite. Even though he swears his favorite memory of that pond is when we sat together on the blanket and watched them terrorize the crows, the sunlight streaming through the tree branches.
I was horrified.
He told me if he would be denied happiness, he would make sure everybody else’s happiness would be denied too, that joy would vanish from the world by his hand. But he loves to laugh. His favorite thing to do is lay in bed with me while we laugh so hard our lungs ache and sides hurt.
My heart ached.
He saw the news once and it wasn’t well. He once told me that if I was taken from this world by a cooperation who tried to say it was within their right to do so because I used a subscription of theirs, that he would bring a gun into the courtroom and shoot the man responsible and then himself. He would wait, and make those responsible confess their sins before shooting them in the stomach and letting them bleed before turning the gun to his temple. Even though he is afraid of death. Even though his heart pounds as he slams on the breaks when a car veers into our lane, and he flinches when somebody uses improper gun safety techniques.
And my stomach churned.
He told me once that if there was a zombie apocalypse and I was bitten, that he could shoot me and then himself because the idea of living in a world where he couldn’t hear me speak to him was his personal hell.
Even though he would cry when turning the gun on himself. He cried over my bedside in the hospital, scared and sick with anxiety.
And my tears flowed.
He told me that it didn’t matter how long he had to wait. Nor how painful it would be. That he would bring hell down to anybody who ripped me from him.
He once cupped my face, eyes wild and feverish. He grasped me in the dead of night, his screams were heinous. He cried into my collar, his nails digging into my flesh.
“I had a horrible dream,” he said, it was all that he said, but I didn’t need to ask to know its contents.
I understand now, male grief.
How it tears in anguish, how it contorts and snaps at sinew and viscera.
… I have committed myself to living longer than him.

UVC Camera Devices Enhancing Sanitation and Safety in Healthcare Environments

In healthcare environments, maintaining stringent sanitation standards is not only crucial but also a non-negotiable aspect of patient safety. With the ongoing challenges of infection control, healthcare facilities are continuously exploring advanced technologies to minimize the risks of cross-contamination. Among the various innovations emerging, UVC camera devices are taking the spotlight as a game-changing solution that enhances sanitation and safety in hospitals, clinics, and other medical environments.
The Importance of UVC Technology in Healthcare
Ultraviolet-C (UVC) light has long been recognized for its disinfecting properties, capable of deactivating harmful microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi. UVC light penetrates the cell walls of pathogens, disrupting their DNA and rendering them harmless. By incorporating this technology into camera devices, healthcare facilities can now add an extra layer of protection to their sanitation protocols.
The combination of visual monitoring and UVC disinfection in one device offers significant benefits. Traditional cleaning methods, while effective, are labor-intensive and prone to human error. UVC camera devices, however, provide an automated solution that can sanitize surfaces and equipment with greater consistency, reducing the risk of human oversight. This efficiency is vital in fast-paced healthcare settings where the stakes are high and time is often a limiting factor.
Enhancing Infection Control and Patient Safety
One of the most compelling advantages of UVC camera devices is their ability to enhance infection control measures. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remain a serious issue in hospitals and long-term care facilities, causing increased patient morbidity, extended hospital stays, and added financial burden on the healthcare system. UVC camera devices can significantly reduce these risks by consistently sanitizing high-touch areas such as operating rooms, patient beds, and medical equipment.
Beyond their disinfection capabilities, these devices also contribute to patient safety through real-time monitoring. The cameras provide continuous visual surveillance, helping staff to quickly identify and respond to potential contamination events. Whether it’s an accidental spill of bodily fluids or improper handling of sterile equipment, UVC cameras offer a second line of defense that can catch and correct issues before they lead to harm.
Increased Efficiency and Cost Savings
While the initial investment in UVC camera technology may seem substantial, the long-term cost savings and operational efficiency make it a smart choice for healthcare providers. The automation of disinfection processes reduces the need for manual cleaning, freeing up staff to focus on patient care. Moreover, the reduced incidence of infections translates to fewer extended stays and less reliance on costly treatments to combat HAIs, resulting in overall savings for the facility.
Another financial benefit is the reduced need for disposable cleaning supplies. UVC cameras require no chemical agents, relying solely on light to disinfect surfaces. This environmentally friendly aspect not only lowers operating costs but also contributes to sustainability efforts, an increasingly important factor for healthcare organizations.
Applications Across Healthcare Settings
The versatility of UVC camera devices allows them to be used in various healthcare settings, from large hospitals to small outpatient clinics. Their ability to sanitize both surfaces and air makes them suitable for use in a wide range of environments, including surgical suites, intensive care units, emergency rooms, and even waiting areas where pathogen exposure is high.
In surgical suites, for example, maintaining a sterile environment is critical. UVC cameras can help ensure that all surfaces, tools, and equipment are thoroughly sanitized between procedures, minimizing the risk of post-surgical infections. Similarly, in waiting areas or outpatient clinics, where a high volume of patients and staff come into contact with surfaces, UVC cameras can continuously disinfect the space, reducing the spread of infectious diseases.
Integrating UVC Camera Technology into Existing Systems
For healthcare facilities looking to enhance their infection control protocols, integrating UVC camera technology into their existing systems can be relatively seamless. Many UVC cameras are designed to be compatible with current monitoring and disinfection workflows. For instance, they can be installed in conjunction with existing CCTV systems, providing the dual benefit of security and sanitation.
Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with UVC camera devices can further enhance their functionality. AI-powered systems can automatically detect when a surface needs to be sanitized, adjusting the UVC exposure to ensure thorough disinfection. This smart technology not only increases the effectiveness of the devices but also reduces energy consumption by optimizing when and where disinfection is needed.
Staff Training and User-Friendliness
While UVC camera devices offer cutting-edge technology, they are designed with user-friendliness in mind. Most systems are intuitive, requiring minimal training for healthcare staff to operate. This ease of use is crucial in environments where staff are already juggling multiple responsibilities. A simple, straightforward interface allows for quick adoption, ensuring that the devices can be implemented without causing disruption to daily operations.
Healthcare facilities should still provide thorough training to ensure that staff understand how to use the devices effectively. Proper usage includes knowing when to activate the UVC disinfection, how to maintain the equipment, and how to ensure that areas are properly covered by the camera’s field of view. With appropriate training, UVC camera devices can become an integral part of the infection control toolkit.
Future Potential and Innovation
As UVC camera technology continues to evolve, its potential applications in healthcare will likely expand. Future innovations may include enhanced AI capabilities, more compact and mobile designs, and integration with other smart healthcare systems. These advancements will make UVC cameras even more adaptable and effective, allowing healthcare providers to stay ahead of emerging infection threats.
In addition to hospitals and clinics, UVC cameras could eventually become standard equipment in other high-risk areas, such as long-term care facilities, dental offices, and even public spaces where disease transmission is a concern. The potential for this technology to safeguard not only patients but also healthcare workers and visitors is immense.
Conclusion
UVC camera devices represent a significant leap forward in the ongoing effort to improve sanitation and safety in healthcare environments. By offering a reliable, automated method for disinfection while simultaneously providing visual monitoring, these devices address two critical needs in infection control. The integration of UVC technology not only helps to reduce the spread of harmful pathogens but also enhances patient safety, improves operational efficiency, and provides cost savings for healthcare facilities.
As the healthcare industry continues to face the challenges of infection control, UVC camera devices will undoubtedly play an increasingly important role in creating safer, cleaner environments for patients, staff, and visitors alike.

How to Maintain Your Hotel White Sheets for Longevity and Comfort
Maintaining the pristine quality of white hotel sheets is essential to hotel management, contributing directly to guest satisfaction and overall comfort. Hotel guests often associate clean, crisp white sheets with luxury and professionalism, so it’s critical for hoteliers to ensure that their linens are well cared for. Maintaining white sheets is about keeping them clean and ensuring longevity, softness, and fresh appearance.
Here, we will explore how to properly care for white hotel sheets, covering topics such as washing, drying, and training housekeeping staff to maximize the lifespan of these linens.

1. Choose High-Quality Sheets from the Start
Before you dive into the maintenance tips, I would like to point out that the quality of the sheets plays a significant role in their longevity. Investing in high-quality cotton sheets with a high thread count can ensure durability. Egyptian cotton, for example, is highly regarded for its durability and softness, making it an excellent choice for hotel bedding. High-quality sheets are more resilient to frequent washing and maintain their luxurious feel over time. This is particularly important in hospitality, where sheets are washed after every guest.
2. Pre-Treating and Sorting Linens
One of the first steps in maintaining white sheets is pre-treating any stains before washing. Whether it’s makeup, coffee, or wine, dealing with stains as quickly as possible is crucial to preventing them from setting into the fabric. Use a commercial-grade stain remover designed for white linens and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for optimal results.

Additionally, make sure to separate white linens from colored fabrics during washing. Mixing them could lead to color transfer, causing white sheets to appear dull or gray over time. Using a color-safe bleach or a whitening agent can help maintain the sheets' bright, white appearance without damaging the fibers.
3. Optimal Washing Practices
The way hotel sheets are washed has a significant impact on their longevity and comfort. Proper washing techniques can help preserve the quality of the fabric, ensuring they remain soft and luxurious for as long as possible.
a. Water Temperature
Washing white sheets in hot water helps to kill bacteria, remove stains, and maintain the crisp appearance of the fabric. A temperature of around 140°F (60°C) is ideal for most hotel-grade sheets. However, be sure to follow the manufacturer's washing instructions to avoid shrinking or damaging the fabric. While hot water is generally recommended for white linens, very delicate materials might require cooler temperatures.
b. Detergent Selection
Choosing the right detergent is crucial when it comes to maintaining white sheets. A high-quality, pH-neutral detergent is ideal as it prevents the breakdown of the fabric while effectively removing dirt and stains. Avoid using harsh chemicals or heavy-duty detergents that can weaken the fibers over time. Opt for a detergent specifically designed for white fabrics, which often contains optical brighteners that help maintain the sheets’ fresh appearance.
c. Avoid Overloading the Washing Machine
Overloading the washing machine can lead to improper cleaning and cause sheets to become tangled or stretched. This can wear out the fabric faster and cause pilling. Washing small batches at a time ensures that the detergent and water circulate effectively, allowing each sheet to be thoroughly cleaned and rinsed.
d. Use of Bleach
While bleach can help whiten sheets, excessive use can weaken the fibers over time. Instead of relying on bleach after every wash, use it sparingly or consider alternative whitening agents such as oxygen-based bleach, which is gentler on the fabric.
4. Proper Drying Techniques
Proper drying of hotel sheets is as important as washing them. Improper drying can lead to shrinkage, wear, and a stiff texture, making sheets less comfortable for guests.

a. Dry on Low Heat
Drying white sheets on high heat can cause damage to the fibers, leading to shrinkage and a rough texture. Instead, use a low heat setting to maintain the softness and integrity of the sheets. If your hotel has the option of line-drying, this is even better as it helps to avoid the harsh heat of a tumble dryer while also preserving the fabric’s fibers.
b. Use Dryer Balls
Dryer balls or tennis balls can help reduce drying time and prevent sheets from clumping together during the drying process. This method helps to keep the sheets soft and fluffy, which enhances the comfort for hotel guests.
c. Avoid Overdrying
Overdrying can lead to sheet damage and shrinkage. Be mindful of the drying time and remove the sheets as soon as they are dry. Overdrying can cause the fibers to become brittle, making them more prone to wear and tear.
5. Ironing and Storing Sheets
Ironing white hotel sheets creates a crisp, professional appearance and helps smooth out wrinkles and maintain their softness. Iron the sheets while they are slightly damp, using a medium heat setting for best results. Ironing can also help eliminate any lingering bacteria or germs that may have survived the washing process.
Once the sheets are clean and pressed, store them in a cool, dry place. Avoid stacking too many sheets on top of one another as this can lead to wrinkles. Store linens in a way that allows for proper air circulation to prevent the buildup of moisture and mildew.
6. Regularly Rotate Linens
Rotate your white hotel sheets regularly to extend their lifespan. By ensuring that no single set of sheets is used more frequently than others, you can prevent overuse and maintain an even level of wear across all your linens. This simple practice can go a long way in ensuring that your sheets maintain their quality and comfort over time.

7. Training Housekeeping Staff
Training your housekeeping staff is one of the most critical steps in ensuring the proper maintenance of white hotel sheets. They must understand the importance of carefully handling linens and following specific washing and drying instructions. Providing them with detailed training on proper laundering techniques, stain removal, and storage procedures will help maintain the quality of your linens and reduce the need for premature replacement.

Housekeeping staff should also be trained to inspect linens for any signs of wear or damage. Sheets that are torn, heavily stained, or worn should be removed from circulation immediately to ensure that only high-quality sheets are provided to guests.
8. Implementing a Linen Management System
A linen management system can help hotels monitor their sheets, ensuring that they are rotated properly and replaced when necessary. Such a system can also track the number of washes each set of sheets has undergone, helping hotel management determine when linens are nearing the end of their lifespan. By keeping a close eye on the condition of your white sheets, you can maintain their luxurious quality and avoid any negative impact on guest satisfaction.
9. Replacing Linens When Necessary
No matter how well-maintained your hotel sheets are, they will eventually need to be replaced. Over time, even the highest quality linens will wear out, becoming less comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. It’s essential to have a schedule to replace your sheets to ensure that your guests are always sleeping on clean, cozy bedding.
Most hotels replace their sheets every 18 to 24 months, depending on usage and laundering practices. However, regular inspections can help identify sheets that need to be replaced earlier.
Conclusion
Maintaining white hotel sheets for longevity and comfort requires a combination of proper laundering techniques, staff training, and consistent monitoring. By investing in high-quality sheets, following best practices for washing and drying, and training your housekeeping team, you can extend the lifespan of your linens and ensure a consistently comfortable experience for your guests. Maintaining your hotel’s reputation for cleanliness and luxury starts with something as simple as the perfect white sheets.

Cleaning and disinfection is a very important part of patient safety within a busy hospital environment. Surface disinfectants are part of the armory against healthcare-associated infections. They play an important role in prevention of transmission of pathogen through various surfaces keeping patient, healthcare staff and visitors safe. This article highlights the role of surface disinfectants within hospitals and the methods by which they maintain good levels of infection control.
The Role of Surface Disinfectants
Surface disinfectants are antimicrobial agents applied on surfaces to kill a wide range of pathogens, from simple bacteria and viruses to complex fungi and spores. Such disinfectants become consequently important materials for the hospital environment where the risks of contaminants are high. Apart from floors, walls, stairs, they are applied to commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs, bed rails, and medical equipment that can act as a reservoir for harmful microorganisms.
Besides, regular use of surface disinfectants can reduce the possibilities of cross-contaminations for a hospital. This can be most important in situations where patients' immunity is compromised or with the administration of critical treatments. Here, the risk of infection is thereby minimized, thus assisting in good outcomes, faster recovery and further patient safety.
Key Benefits of Surface Disinfectants for Hospitals
HAI prevention: Hospital-acquired infections make for one of the serious issues in hospitals, in some cases causing prolonged hospitalization, which obviously increases healthcare expenditure. The Effective use of surface disinfectants helps in HAI prevention by ensuring a high level of disinfection
Care for Vulnerable Patients: There are many vulnerable patients who come to the hospital, including the immunocompromised and those undergoing surgery. Effective disinfection can prevent such vulnerable patients from becoming infected and help these patients avoid potential complications associated with hospital acquired infections in the treatment process.
Compliance with Regulations: Hospitals must maintain high hygiene standards, and, therefore, are required to have very strict regulations by health authorities in terms of hygiene. When certified surface disinfection is in place, the hospital can benefit from compliance with health regulations while continuing to offer high-quality care.
Surface Disinfectant Selection for Hospitals
An effective surface disinfectant would have to take into consideration a number of things. The spectrum of activity is that it must be able to act on a wide variety of pathogens, ranging from the common bacteria and viruses to the fungi and spores. It is ideal to use surface disinfectant which is effective against prevalent pathogens at hospital.
Contact Time: Each disinfectant has a contact time; that is, the amount of time that the product must be left in contact with the surface in order to disinfect thoroughly. This is necessary to follow to guarantee performance as indicated.
Material Compatibility: Make sure the surface to be cleaned is compatible with the disinfectant in use. Some disinfectants will ruin some materials and surfaces.
To achieve the best from the surface disinfectants, the following best practices should be followed:
Proper Application: Refer to the manufacturer's instructions regarding dilution, application, and contact time. Improper application will result in ineffective disinfection.
Regular Training: This should be provided to the hospital staff on the proper use of disinfectants. This includes understanding contact time, safe handling practices, dilutions, etc.
Routine Audits: There should be regular auditing of the disinfection practice to observe if the protocols are adhered to, and the improvement on the same is factual
Innovations in Disinfection Technology
The state of surface disinfection is changing. New technologies promise to improve its effectiveness in so many ways. Electrostatic sprayers of this kind ensure an even, comprehensive coverage of disinfectants on the surfaces. They are particularly useful for large spaces or spaces that are not open floor. Foggers and Auto-diluters are used for effective surface and environment disinfection and better compliance of the product.
Surface disinfectants are one of the keystones of hygiene within hospitals for the prevention of infections and providing a safe environment for patients and staff. What will help facilitate this will be the selection of appropriate products, adherence to the best practices, and staying up to date with new technologies. For providers of means and measures of sanitation and industry experts, these fine lines can lie between surface disinfectants, meaning a world of difference when it comes to recommending only the most effective solutions in order to support nothing less than the highest in care standards.

7 Alternatives To Tree Removal
Amidst declining urban tree cover, homeowners often resort to tree removal without exploring alternatives. However, trees offer myriad benefits, from enhancing property values to fostering environmental health. Planting as well as removal decisions are crucial.
So, here’s a blog that explores the multifaceted advantages of trees, common reasons for tree removal in Mornington Peninsula, and alternative preservation strategies. Let's rethink our approach to tree management, prioritising sustainability and stewardship to safeguard our urban canopies for generations to come.
1. Hire an arborist
Consider hiring an arborist if you're facing tree-related issues. These professionals possess the expertise to address various tree problems without resorting to tree removal in Mornington Peninsula. Even in cases where removal or pruning is necessary, it's safest to entrust such tasks to trained professionals. Attempting DIY tree cutting poses significant risks, and improper pruning often exacerbates future problems, potentially leading to eventual removal. Arborists are also well-versed in local permitting requirements. However, it's crucial to exercise caution, as not all individuals offering tree services are qualified. To ensure quality work, seek out arborists certified by the International Society of Arboriculture.
2. Addressing root issues
Roots naturally gravitate towards these existing ruptures, attracted by nutrient-rich moisture. Once inside the pipe, roots can proliferate, potentially blocking it entirely. However, simply removing the tree may not resolve the issue, as the cracks persist, and the remaining roots or stumps may continue to grow.
While pipe replacement offers a long-term solution, many homeowners also prefer some of the other alternatives:
● Managing root intrusion through maintenance
● Regular chemical treatments to deter root growth.
● Mechanical clearing of blocked sewers.
● Annual maintenance.
3. Solving foundational problems
Although the presence of tree roots in foundation cracks may suggest tree involvement, roots are rarely the primary cause or capable of widening the crack significantly. Depending on factors like soil type, tree species, and proximity to the house, installing a root barrier at the foundation may be warranted.
4. Mitigating hazardous trees
Instances of falling branches and toppling trees frequently coincide with severe weather conditions such as heavy winds, snowstorms, or ice accumulation, as well as when the ground becomes overly saturated due to intense rainfall. While certain tree species are more prone to shedding branches, most trees can endure typical weather disturbances.
Arborists possess the expertise to identify trees posing potential hazards. A tree is deemed hazardous when it exhibits defects and is situated in a location where it poses a risk. Factors contributing to hazard assessment include extensive root damage, often resulting from construction activities, making the tree less stable, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Additional risk indicators encompass dead branches, cavities or rot, improper branching structures (often stemming from inadequate pruning), or being enveloped by vines.
Many risks associated with hazardous trees can be mitigated through measures such as pruning to remove defective branches or repositioning targets to allow branches to fall harmlessly. Furthermore, trees at risk of falling can often regain health through proper maintenance or be stabilized using techniques like cabling and bracing.
5. Enhancing Views
A common motivation for tree removal in Mornington Peninsula is to clear obstructed views, yet trees themselves offer a valuable vista. Research demonstrates that exposure to trees enhances human health and well-being; patients with views of trees from hospital beds often experience faster recovery.
Alternatively, view trees as natural frames for scenery. Topping trees or removing them entirely can disrupt this frame, leaving unsightly rooftops and driveways exposed. Instead, consider expert pruning techniques such as windowing, interlimbing, or skirting up to create views while preserving tree health. These methods optimize desired views while minimizing the prominence of unattractive foreground elements.
6. Cable and brace
Cabling and bracing techniques offer effective solutions for addressing structural issues in trees, such as significant leans or weakened limbs. Cabling involves installing high-strength cables between limbs or between the tree and nearby structures to redistribute weight and reduce the risk of failure. Bracing utilises rods or braces to support weak branch unions or split trunks, promoting healing and preventing further separation.
These techniques, performed by trained arborists, provide temporary support while allowing the tree to continue growing. Regular inspection and maintenance ensure their effectiveness, extending the tree's lifespan and preserving its beauty and safety for years to come.
7. Tree replacement
If your tree removal is unavoidable in Mornington Peninsula, mitigate the environmental impact by planting a new tree to offset the carbon dioxide absorption lost from the removed tree. This proactive step ensures continued environmental benefits while addressing aesthetic preferences.
Final Word:
Having grasped the significance of trees, hopefully, you will reconsider hasty tree removal. Consulting a professional for an evaluation is among the most effective approaches to discern which trees warrant removal and which should remain.
Reach out to High Line Tree Care for assistance in assessing any tree removal in Warrnambool and Mornington Peninsula. With their conscientious attention and expert guidance, you can reside securely amidst a flourishing natural setting.

The bad back has been acting up again for 3 days now and I can’t help but reminisce, well mostly regret? That had I used proper body mechanics then, will I not be experiencing all this pain every now and then? That things could have been different?
Suffered a lumbosacral strain while I was in college. Our clinical duty as a group was at SLU Sacred Heart Hospital Coronary Ward, and I was stationed at the ICU. A patient is scheduled for catheter removal and insertion of a new one (if I remember correctly). It was a very long procedure. Dunno why. So, the NOD will do it. And I was tasked to support the patient’s legs for the entire time. I for one already have a bad posture to begin with. To add insult to the injury, I was overweight, even slightly obese for my height and Asian built. After that procedure, when I stood up, I felt a sudden, striking pain on my right lower back. I thought it would go away as time passes, we were still hours away ‘til we finish that rotation duty. BUT NO. The pain was relentless, getting worse, and inexplicably excruciating. Drove me to a point where I was already crying in public, while on duty at the ward, seen by my group mates, other groups also on duty from different wards, NODs, our clinical instructor, even some SOs and patients.
When they saw me, our NOD said, “Hala slipped disc, slipped disc. De joke lang.” At the back of my mind, “Shiiiit please no.” Our NOD already told a group mate to get a wheelchair and rush me to the ER so I can be checked. So imagine this, due to improper use of body mechanics, a student nurse on duty, in uniform, had to be put on a wheelchair, in tears, passed through hospital wards and hallways, placed on an ER bed. It was really embarrassing to say the least. But I didn’t care anymore, I just wanted to know what was happening.
When the doctor arrived, saw me in pain, ugly crying. He asked what happened. Checked my lower back. He ought to put me on ketorolac drip and asked me if I wanted to stay at the hospital. The me thinking I still have a duty tomorrow said no. If I could just take oral meds and go home. Doctor said yes, but told me that I needed CBR, w/ BRPs as he writes down instructions with my prescription. And was advised not to go on duty the next day.
I just followed the doctor’s orders and felt better the next few days. Didn’t seek or even thought about rehab, therapy, and whatnot because I was young and I felt okay. I was able to go to school, get on with my classes and hospital duties just fine. It is times like these when I get reminded of that incident. Well, I am once again overweight, with little to no exercise. I’m working daily but as they say, exercise is actually different from daily tasks or work.
I had few incidences throughout the years. In pain at home, at work, even during vacations. I guess it never fully healed. Or may be aggravated by certain circumstances? That HK trip is by far the worse. The pain that I felt transported me back to that wheelchair, back in that hospital in college. But that’s for another story.
I am actually looking for therapists, doctors, chiropractors, or any institution, rehab center, clinics that I could go to and have therapy for my lower back. I think it is also high time to shed some pounds, get fit, and be healthy again.
So yeah. I should get to it. 💛🙏🏼

Rat cages do and dont's
I thought this would be a good reference post for those who have rats are or are thinking about getting rats, considering the amount of misinformation I see on this site about rat enclosures. I honestly could make a series of posts about rat care misconceptions as a whole but I think this is a really important one. Of course there are some exceptions to these, such as in the case of hospital cages or travel/temp cages, but that's not what I'm talking about in this post.
1. Do make sure it's the proper size
Rats need about 2.5 square feet per rat, and adding height or extra levels doesn't add to this, only adding floor space will. A critter nation, a popular rat cage, can only hold four rats. Adding a unit on top doesn't increase the amount of rats you can keep in one, only adding floor space by adding a unit on the side can increase the rat limit. 32x20x24 is the absolute minimum cage dimensions. There are many other brands that meet the requirements and are suitable, make sure to always check the dimensions. Plastic neon critter trails from PetSmart are never ever acceptable.
2. Do use loose substrate all along the base.
Rats are a fossorial species that need to be able to dig and burrow, and thus need at least a few inches of a suitable substrate to be properly enriched. Lining your cage with fleece or blankets is not suitable at all and is something I see many people doing too often. This is not proper rat care. Additionally do not use paper or clay pellets as a substrate through the whole base. Certain types of pellets are okay in litter boxes but aren't a suitable substrate.
Paper bedding is often used and it's not inherently harmful but paper has very poor ammonia control and the ammonia in rat pee is very bad for their delicate respiratory systems. You will need to change this out much more frequently to insure they're not breathing in a bunch of ammonia and it will stink alot more. Plus paper bedding can be more expensive. All around I wouldn't recommend it at all.
Wood shavings are a really good option, depending on the type. Certain woods like cedar and raw pine will release chemicals that aren't good for rats at all. Pine bedding is alright if kiln dried, but some rats still may be sensitive to it, in my experience. Aspen bedding and hemp bedding are great options. Make sure the bedding isn't too dusty, certain brands are less dusty than others, but it isn't too hard to sift the dust out on your own usually.
In the case of bio-active enclosures eco earth and other types of soil make really good substrates, but this type of cage set up honestly deserves its own post.
3. Do have proper ventilation
Like stated before the ammonia in their pee is very bad for their respiratory systems, therefor a cage needs to be properly ventilated. Bin cages, tanks and aquariums, any cage that doesn't have proper ventilation on all sides, is harmful. They need to have proper air flow in and out of the cage. That's why cages with the typical four wired sides and wired top is best. I even see homemade cages with two sides made of wood and two sides made of wire cloth and this isn't okay either. (Not to mention wood cages are improper as well do to pee absorption and being able to be chewed through)
4. Don't use too many levels
Little to no levels should be used in your cage if you want an active lay out. Try replacing them with lava ledges, ropes, branches, baskets and the like, to make the cage layout more enriching and to keep them active and healthy. Ramps especially aren't recommended, this can cause laziness, hind leg degeneration, and wired ramps can cause bumble foot. Wired anything except for the sides of the cage are a big no.
Some people keep one or a minimal amount of levels and I think this is okay depending on what you do with it. I keep one level in my cage to hold a dig box but all other additional levels have been removed.
5. Do fill it with the right things
A big cage that goes above and beyond the size recommendations but isn't filled properly is still subpar. They need lots of enrichment and alot of "clutter" so to speak, to feel safe. A wide open bare cage will not make them feel secure and they will be extremely bored.
They should have lava ledges and ropes and the like for climbing. Sea grass mats and branches made of safe wood also are great. Check beforehand to see if any wooden item is made of a wood that's safe for rats, as some wood is toxic to them. I personally use grape wood and apple wood in my cage.
Foraging toys are also a great, and I'd say necessary, addition to any proper cage. They need things to keep them from getting bored, they are extremely intelligent animals and foraging toys or small puzzles like that are great for them. Actually lots of toys for parrots are great for rats.
They should have at least a few different places to sleep, such as hammocks or hides. I like to have at least one of either for everyone rat.
Fall breakers. This is extremely important to insure the safety of your rats. If your rat falls from the top of the cage, fall breakers are there to catch them and avoid potential injuries. Seagrass mats, nets, and Ikea tie holders are amazing for this, I recommend multiple. You should have enough that there's not too many open spaces your rat can fall through. They also additional give your rat more things to climb on, making the layout more active.
Rats can be littered trained, and paper litter pellets are good for litter boxes, or a different type of substrate then the one you use for the rest of the cage. Just make sure the litter tray doesn't have a wired bottom.
Also additional I recommend having nesting material available in the cage, such as Timothy hay or orchard grass or anything along those lines. They really do enjoy putting nests together with them and it adds some texture variety for them.
6. Do have proper water sources
Rats should have access to clean, fresh water at all times. They should have multiple sources of water.
Bowls aren't bad but are very likely to be spilled, spoiled, or contaminated and need to be changed at least daily. If you do give them water in a bowl they should still always have at least one bottle, though I would recommend more depending on how many rats you have.
7. Don't house rats alone
I think most know this but I'm adding it on in case. Rats are social animals and you cannot replace their need for same species companionship. They should be grouped in groups of two at minimum, and two is the absolute minimum. Three or more is actually much more recommended. Housing a rat alone for long periods of time is down right cruel.
Also don't house them with non rat animals, such as mice and hamsters and the like. They should not under any circumstances be interacting with other species, other than their fellow rats and their humans. Your cat grooming them is not cute.
If there's anything I forgot to say, feel free to add on.

⚠️ WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BRAZIL: a thread ⚠️
am i going insane or more of the world should care about a country generating covid variants that could spread internationally? right
spoiler alert: covid is killing us. badly. no, it's not this bad everywhere. yes, you should care.
our government is DELIBERATELY and CLEARLY trying to kill us, not only not doing anything but actually trying to stop any help from getting here, with censorship to go with it.
PLEASE, READ RHIS THREAD
it's NOT this bad everywhere:
"No other nation that experienced such a major outbreak is still grappling with record-setting death tolls and a health care system on the brink of collapse."
yes, you SHOULD care:
"Preliminary studies suggest that the variant that swept through the city of Manaus is not only more contagious, but it also appears able to infect some people who have already recovered from other versions of the virus."
you REALLY should care:
"And the variant has slipped Brazil’s borders, showing up in two dozen other countries and in small numbers in the United States."
1 in every 4 covid deaths WORLDWIDE is happening in brazil, INTERNATIONAL MEDIA ISN'T TALKING ABOUT THIS ENOUGH.
our president?
- calling it "a little flu"
- literally making trying to legally stop states from lockdown
- blocked any attempts to get vaccines here for months
- recommended meds with no scientific proof which caused SEVERAL other deaths for overuse of improper meds
he refuses to wear a mask in public but it's not just the things he isn't doing, it's the deliberate steps he takes to make sure ANYONE who tries to do ANYTHING to help (even the US!!!!!!!! OFFERING US VACCINES FOR MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!) is shut down.
we have no oxygen. no ICU beds. no proper masks. basic food is so expensive here the country is falling back to hunger, so whoever is not dying from covid is dying out of starvation or due to the complete and utter collapse of our healthcare system.
if you read the articles i post here you will know brazil has a RECORD of being GREAT in this type of scenario & getting vaccines to everyone fast as fuck.
this is a DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO KILL US, i couldn't possibly stress that enough.
who is it killing? take a guess.
"The study also found that Black Brazilians were likelier to lose their jobs or face pay cuts than white people during the pandemic. The death rate in poorer cities has been substantially higher than in rich ones."
BY JANUARY OF THIS YEAR the ny times was reporting "The country has not yet approved any of the vaccines on the market."
NOT EVEN APPROVED. ANY. OF THE VACCINES.
this isn't a tragedy, this is our government's plan.
again, why are people not helping? i have no clue.
"On Friday, officials at the World Health Organization called the surge of cases in Brazil deeply troubling and warned that it could wreak havoc well beyond the country’s borders."
censorship? oh yeah, the president's son is trying to silence a guy who made a TWEET calling the president out. & that was only news not a shady unexplainable death bc the guy is famous and rich in the first place.
this is not the only threat he has made, btw. during his CAMPAIGN he said he'd kill people who opposed his government. that is how low we are.
10,3MI brazilians might starve to death and things are only getting worse:
have i proven my point? cuz honestly there is no lack of evidence, but i can go graphic if you need to hear what happens when a patient needs oxygen or an ambulance and our hospitals can't provide it.
no? yeah. better not.
"ok but what can we do"
TALK. ABOUT. THIS.
WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS.
WHY IS THIS NOT EVERYWHERE.
WHY IS NOBODY HELPING.
i literally feel crazy, as if this is only happening in my head. every brazilian i know is desperate and nobody cares.
"ok but what else"
we need donations, badly. money for food, masks, literally all supplies. if you are a single person guess what THERE ARE NO ORGANISED WAY TO HELP YET you literally need to find a brazilian or learn portuguese to be able to get to local donations centres.
have i mentioned nobody cares? how is a country going through this massive of a crisis with a government trying to kill and silence us yet there people barely heard about this???? given IT IS CREATING DEADLY VARIANTS THAT ARE SPREADING BEYOND BORDERS
oh my god i feel insane
special call-out for portugal & also the US for fucking us up historically
https://t.co/JQ9LBkfSIV
per request i will make an english speaking video about brazil's covid situation to be posted @ youtube.com/c/AndressaBuss later this week
