My favorite design exercise was this:

"Describe a chair"

Everyone in the room describes a chair. Everyone agrees on it. 4 legs, a back, a seat. Then the professor shows one of those plastic S-shaped chairs. And goes, this has no legs is it a chair? And everyone goes well yes sure.

Then the professor shows a chair that is perfectly as described but: covered in spikes, 10x too large or small, made of flimsy material that you can't sit on, or the back is in the middle of the seat, or all the angles are weird and you can't sit on it.

And they go what about this? And they go no.

And then the professor shows a ton of other chairs that all break the definition but are easier to sit on than the ones that match the definition: a big rock, a chair with 3 legs, a chair with no back, on and on.

Eventually you end the discussion with the realization that humans really like to categorize things, and it can help, but it's not always right, and when we stick to definitions, we end up designing bad products, boring products, and we ignore other choices that work well and people would like.

Biologically, categorizing things helps with threat detection. Technically speaking your hippocampus, amygdala, a few other parts of your brain that handle threat detection fire off before your prefrontal cortex (where you have conscious thought.)

What this means is that you often will sit in a chair, and if you suddenly notice there's a huge spike on it, you'll stand up really fast so you don't shove it up your ass.

Your brain is subconsciously going "chair" "sit" "SPIKE! STAND UP". You're don't walk into the room, look at all the furniture, analyze the characteristics and predetermine what is and isn't a chair, or a TV, or whatever.

The reason for that is evolutionary. Your brain runs on a similar amount of power to a lightbulb. We have one of the most complex and powerful brains in the biosphere and yet we can run it on like 1500 or less calories a day.

We have evolved to efficiently make survival decisions and a big part of this is categorization and prediction.

The prefrontal cortex is the newest part of the brain and the least efficient. Lots of difficult thinking can actually drain you for the day, might require a little extra sugar intake for recovery (which was hard to find back in the day,) and often you can really only do it for a handful of hours before you're super burnt out and living in stupidsville. Many productivity experts think most people have about 4-6 productive hours in them per day, especially when it comes to knowledge work. They also believe that multitasking drains your mental bandwidth faster.

The point is, don't use the prefrontal cortex often if you want to evolve a super efficient biological survival brain. Instead use it enough to categorize and store things for later so that you can make subconscious predictions about them.

However, when you're not surviving, you can see that those predictions are what we would call accurate enough. They apply well enough for enough situations, but if we want to expand that definition, do things like social science, engineering, politics, art, music, math, hard science, teaching and education, we start to need to work outside of our survival brain.

You can kind of see, from this paradigm, why people get scared of things that don't fit their definition. They're obviously being stupid, but... and a very important but... they're operating off of the same basic wiring everyone else is.

The things that help people expand outside of these simplistic understandings are generally: not being in survival mode (like not watching scary propaganda or living in poverty or war or living without access to healthcare food or housing,) being surrounded by a community that supports different ways of thought (usually areas with social diversity, areas with progressive or no religion,) access to education, and some intrinsic desire to learn new things (which not everyone has.)

I think no matter what part of society people come from, they are capable of prejudice because of this, and they are also capable of overcoming prejudice because of this, but it starts with recognizing the issue and choosing to change.

It's crazy how trans men are "confused lesbians" until one of them identifies as a lesbian and then oh fuck no we can't have that.

I believe what I am creating to be one of my non-traditional sculptures, as a prototype to make editions from, as may provide those wishing to be artists, a way to believe they may afford their life, of their own authentic honesty.  Working of confirming those as close to be as could be my child are well, though, as left seeking to protect them from what seemed to wish me harm, I am aeeking my learning slowly enough to sustain those that survived. I hope progress is learning beyond only what was previously devil’s advocacy, of just disbelief.  Otherwise, I have been focusing on what unbelievable cures I am able to qualify as found without their influence, although as miraculously good to believe.

It is Tuesday the 7th of January 2025 on planet Earth.

I just got back from the Spear Rhinoceros wild sanctuary realizing I left my wallet in El Segundo. When yesterday I spent most of the day at the Religious Cafe next to a nice person who was a worker for a good organization and does jump out of planes. Her named reminded me of my friend that is a match maker.

Then I went to the park, or before that I mean, and this other person an older lady had a dog that reminded me of a demon from hell. She said some really mean things to me and tried to manipulate me and scare me. I was nice to her but I don't understand why people are so manipulative? What is their goal or purpose? What can't people on thisnplanet just be honest and direct?

I don't know if I will ever uncover the truth behind that question but it is very concerning.

At the dog park I met a nice person from Poland, Bulgaria and somewhere else too until that one pushy lady who was in the big dog area came around with a tiny dog. Don't people know there are big dogs there that can just actually not be controlled and would maybe just act out?

She mentioned Garden Grove and New Jersey and talked about how her son is a stalker. That energy is just really gross to me.

At Coffee Religion Celeste was really nice to this person next to me and the coffee shop even handed out free 🍎 and cheese bread with honey that reminded me of home like Walker Bros. I got a call from the Nevada Health Dept about the food poisoning incident at the four seasons on Dec 21st I think and I don't know why there would be something so gross in their drinks there. It makes me wonder if anywhere is safe on earth if you can't even get a cup of tea at the four seasons anymore.

Tonight, aka this morning, I drove around to clear my head after mom got me really disregulated by being all angry about money and a .99 charge on the credit card. I can't breathe like them so I can't feel like them. But I'm expected to behave like them. It doesn't make sense.

It's like all the people here just want everyone to act like robots and be the exact same.
