what squicks me about j x 7 is that i cant detach it from its maternalesque vibes. i understand that the relationship is one of mentor and student but the narrative to me does not read any romantic undertones and does often feel like it gets motherly at times

i am biased about this as i have many influences for feeling the way i do about them but what cemented it for me in the end (that i would never be able to see them in a romantic manner) is how kate mulgrew found jeri ryan to be a threat and acted uncouthly towards her during their time on set. they have since reconciled but its really hard to view the characters that way. no hate to those that do but its gonna be a no thankyou from me

Ocular implants and pak headcanons; This is kind of a stream of consciousness post

Irkens are born with organic eyes, but they are replaced very very early. Like, before they are 'born' and given a pak kind of early.

They are implanted while the Irken smeet is still in their test tube. All done by robotics in the smeet incubation chambers. This is to ensure that when a smeet is hatched and given a pak, the pak can instantly connect and a smeet can see perfectly in an instant.

If an Irken was hatched with their organic eyes, they would not be fully developed and would not be in a position to function independently.

Fully Organic smeets, without a pak, would survive past hatching. But they would need to be taken care of from birth by a parental figure. Unable to see properly or take care of themselves at all - for at least a few weeks.

Paks and other implants make a smeet fully independent. Over time, they have become a crutch of the Irken race - and are unable to be removed once installed. They power too much of the little space bug to function without it. But an irken born unaltered, and taken care of through the early stages of life would survive.

The control brains of course would have them hunted down and killed if discovered.

I've been wondering what to do bc it's like. The resurrection drug does eventually get upgraded, and the upgraded form is something only Phoenix can handle bc they're used to the weaker forms

But I wasn't entirely sure how to work it, because I mean. It's already pretty strong. But since it'd incorporate the kinesium, it could he something along the lines of letting Phoenix consciously decide what to do with certain wounds & possibly just heal them enough to keep them from being lethal, so that unconsciousness isn't really an active threat

which makes Phoenix even more of a threat bc on top of that there's the upgraded telekinesis. So

We know that her ocular implant tints everything green, which would make anything red just look black.

A little heartbreaking that of all the myriad things the Borg stole from the six-year-old girl they assimilated, they stole her favorite color too, and surrounded her with its opposite.

I love the detail that the other implants on Seven’s body where the skin is growing around the implant. It makes more sense that skin would grow around the implants, like a tree bark around an object.

Oh thank you so much! I must admit this idea has kind of taken me over, although it stemmed mostly from my obsession over Eddie/Sisko parallels (they both exist inside their worst moments and I am incapable of being normal about it)

For you, a snippet from later on, possibly the first bit of this I actually wrote 💕

"I am completely alone," he says, his voice breaking. "You did this to me."

"We also saved your life, so maybe settle down a little," Chim says.

"I can never return to the collective. I am alone. A Borg cannot be alone. I - I - "

He slams his fist one more time into the forcefield before he turns away from them. Hen and Chim watch assessingly for a few seconds before they have one of their silent, eyebrow-led conversations and step away, the door sliding shut behind them a moment later.

Buck looks at the ex-Borg's back for a moment, the shape of one of the remaining implants visible at his shoulder. Buck knows there's another one on one side of his torso, across his ribs. Hen and Chim think he will eventually reject the ocular implant completely, but for now it's still there, and Buck wonders what it's like, what it does to his vision, what benefits it offers.

He bites his tongue for a second, and although he manages not to start interrogating their…guest (he refuses to call the man three of four), what comes out of his mouth is almost as bad.

"Are - are you okay?"

Their guest doesn't reply.

"I - I know you won't believe me now, but this crew - we're - they became my family. That's kind of like a collective. Maybe - we can be that for you, too. You just have to try to let us."

"You cannot," he says, not turning to look at Buck. "You are not capable of being part of my collective. You could not comprehend - I am alone."

"Wow, okay," Buck mutters, but he can't be offended, not really, not when the guy sounds so…wretched. "Okay. I'll leave you alone, but I'm going to come and check on you soon."

First Line Challenge

So, um, tiny detail, but I don’t know the rules of the first line challenge. Therefore, I’ll make my own rules to choose a story at random and share the first few lines:

The siren always seems to sound just before daybreak.

Maybe because that’s when particulates in the planet’s atmosphere coalesce. At least in autumn, and it’s been autumn for almost three weeks — five weeks to go — which means the piercing whine yanks Una out of sleep, bedsheets thrown aside, her feet landing on the wood-plank floor before her eyes even open.

“Go. I’m right behind you.” Seven is slower, ocular implant glitches worse when her rest is interrupted like this, human biology nourished by sleep but xB technology still hungry for a regeneration alcove.

Even after all these years.

TNG Original Costume Tests: Geordi La Forge

I don’t have the actual documentary, just the Trekcore caps, so forgive me if I miss anything, and feel free to add on if you have more info!

The VISOR here looks a lot more like a plain old visor to me, what with the smoothness and shininess. Though it still looks rather futuristic. Maybe I’m just attached to the VISOR the way it ended up! Interesting that it still has the silver frame and gold middle color scheme! It just doesn’t have the tines.

Straight-up ICONIC look right here. Not only does the VISOR look fantastic, the whole outfit combo is just so happy. I usually don’t love the colour yellow. This is a major exception. LeVar Burton made a fantastic choice of clothes and I’m so glad it’s enshrined for posterity. I have an irrational love for this look. I think about it all the time. (Also: this is the source of a fantastic gif by @star-trekster)

Nice close up on the two different colours for the ocular implants of his VISOR! They ended up going with the red one, but the multicoloured one also looks cool! It looks more like Data’s inner workings.

There are also a few tests that are obviously not on LeVar Burton (I don't know who this actor is, but I think they also screen tested some general crew uniforms), but are still interesting. This one has a black frame and some sort of sparkly thing going on. To me, the middle looks weirdly recessed to me, because it doesn’t have the tines filling it in.

The on screen visor designs tend to have the tines more significantly overlapped (season 1, they’re almost all the way across, and in later seasons they’re connected to both the top and bottom of the frame), so the half overlapping tines combined (com-tined?) the slightly taller frame make it look a lot larger. However, it doesn’t reach all the way to the ears like the on screen version does.
