I happened to read this interview where Alex Ross Perry (co-director of Rite Here Rite Now) was talking about his Videoheaven and Pavements projects, and this quote jumped out at me:

Cinema Scope: There’s a line that keeps popping up in Videoheaven: “The movies talk about themselves.” I like this a lot, and it’s interesting that a filmmaker like Brian De Palma was ahead of the curve in assessing the symbolic or semiotic potency of the video-store space, whereas later on it served mostly as a backdrop for romantic comedies. It was a way to hint that the characters had inner lives, and taste, but rarely to the point where they genuinely talk about movies. It’s like a weird uncanny-valley thing: I remember always wondering what the characters on Friends would say about La Dolce Vita (1961), the poster for which is hanging in Monica’s apartment, or if the version of Die Hard (1988) they rented had actual profanity in it… Alex Ross Perry: Well, this is something that only people like us would ever think about. If they rent Die Hard on Friends, but then Bruce Willis appears in a later season as Ross’ girlfriend’s father, in this world, is there simply a guy who looks like Willis and has his mannerisms, and so on? And has he ever seen Die Hard? This question is of course made text in Last Action Hero (1993), with the Stallone Terminator 2 (1991) gag. To say nothing of the now well-known and HD-enhanced fact that on Seinfeld, Jerry owns Child’s Play 2 (1991) and Arachnophobia (1990) on VHS, along with Pretty Woman (1990), which stars Jason Alexander…I’m reading too much into all this, but so would a De Palma character.

(For some broader context -- Videoheaven is an as-yet unreleased documentary about video stores, particularly as they're featured in film.)

But it made me think, it's funny, isn't it -- the VHS tapes in Rite Here Rite Now.

Some of them are vague -- for the two box sets next to the TV, the top one has a logo that was used for Prequelle Exalted version, and the bottom is the logo for either Impera (possibly Phantomime, it's hard to tell which with the color grading in the movie). I don't think anybody has definitively figured out what Ghost In the Trees means, but Haze Over North America Tour 2013 was a real tour that happened, but no audio or video of it was ever released (at least, not in our universe).

On the table, we have one more box set with the If You Have Ghosts logo and art, and we see tapes of the Chapters videos. New Blood, Tax Season and Meanwhile in Dublin, are shown up close, plus Nap Time is on the desk in front of Sister Imperator.

The fact that the Chapters exist on VHS is what's so weird. There's really no way to reconcile the existence of these tapes in the Ghost universe with the way most people would have understood the Chapters up until now. I think the default interpretation of a piece of fiction is that it is true in its own reality -- i.e. in the universe where Cardinal Copia is himself, and not Tobias Forge in a mask, the Chapters are something that actually happened. It's much weirder to see it it as some kind of meta-fiction, where it's a scripted production put together and released by these fictional characters. But Rite Here Rite Now is a movie about Copia and Sister Imperator and Papa Nihil and not the actors that play them - how could the chapters possibly co-exist with the characters in-universe?

I always think that's a fun part of Ghost -- the veil between the universe of Ghost's lore and reality is often so thin. They come out to play in our world in the form of concerts, and it's not quite like meeting Mickey Mouse in Disney World where the costumed character's experiences have no bearing on the canon. The real life shows Ghost performs add to the counter Papa Nihil is keeping for Copia. The accolades that they allude to in the Chapters - the Grammy, the gold certification for Mary On A Cross, TikTok virality - all happen in real life.

For the record, I don't think we're meant to explain the tapes in RHRN, for the record -- my interpretation it is just a nod to what Alex Ross Perry mentioned in the interview. It is impossible to have a fictional storyline that takes place in the real world without running up against paradoxes you create.

Also, allow me to plug my own post, from earlier: besides the VHS I already mentioned, there are two others on the table that are partially obscured and unidentifiable - the one in the GIF above, with the Union Jack on it, and one other in an orange case that appears to say "Australian Tour" (the "tour" part is cut off in this screen cap, but is somewhat visible in the video). I can't tell if there's other text on the VHS cover, or if it's just graphics.

I can't figure out if it's young Nihil on the cover or a stylized version of Papa III -- but either way, Papa Nihil of course never went on an Australian tour in our reality (or, theoretically, in theirs - since, per Metal Myths, Nihil's version of Ghost "immediately disbanded" - not that Ghost is unwilling to retcon things) but neither did Papa III. There were plans for an Australian tour during Meliora era, but they fell through when Soundwave was cancelled in 2016. But I guess it's another point where their reality diverges from ours :-)

Today is IYRIN day BUT I’ve been on holiday last week and didn’t have time to define the last details of the VI chapter, which is 90% done so it should be a matter of days. You finally face the guard ghoul outside his office, raising the tray a bit to let him see. “His coffee.” You just say, and the ghoul just nods without a word.

You take a few seconds to knock at the large wooden door, hearing back a far “Come in.”

In the shadow, Copia’s silhouette starts to define itself at each step, revealing a middle age - yet very charming - man, hair elegantly slicked back, a decorated papal vestment and a simple skull face paint, that surprisingly does not look very scary.

You know he is going to have a day full of meetings and he had been working tirelessly on bureaucratic stuff for days. He must be so stressed, but you are there with only a cup of coffee to relieve his spirit. That can not be the only contribution you can offer to make him feel better, right?

You take your time to stare at him a bit more. You can read on his face a sense of melancholy and wisdom.

His expressive eyes finally notice you, granting you nothing more than a brief glance.

“Your Unholiness, your coffee…”

He just gestures for you to place it on the desk.

“You can leave it here, dear.” He quickly moves some of the papers he was focused on, to create some space for the cup, don’t bother looking at you. His movements have something clumsy, but you do as instructed, carefully leaving his coffee on the desk.

“…Kids temp.” You add with a little smile, standing there hoping to catch his attention.

“Thank you.” He briefly smiles back at you, nodding as if to give you permission to go.

You were told he was nothing like Terzo, who was hard to have around, making all your sisters nervous and shivering in excitement, especially when he was silent. Copia, on the other hand, had become progressively more quiet and dorky with time, inspiring more of a sense of tenderness, which awoke the desires of the large part of sisters and brothers with daddy issues of the Ministry. You joined right after he was promoted to the Papa, feeling safe and comfortable around him and his gentle ways from the beginning.

You feel you can dare to tease him a bit with no fear of consequences.

“Do you need anything?” He anticipates you, giving you a little hope of interaction.

“Yes, I was very interested in ancient spells lately, I was wondering if you store any interesting books about it here in your office.”

“There are plenty of books about ancient spells in the Ministry library, no need to search here. I’m sure you’ll find something interesting there.” He replies quietly.

“Well, can I see if I find something else of interest, here? Maybe a record, I’d like to hear new music.”

Copia gives you the tiniest smile, before lowering his gaze to the papers again “You are a very curious one, eh?”

You smile in response, roaming around the room, glancing at the titles in the large library and hoping he’s still looking at you.

After moments of silence, you go back to his desk, standing with your hands behind your back.

“What are you working on?”

“Oh, boring stuff… papers, writings. Just Papa stuff…” he briefly smiles at you.

“Can I see?” You say, circling the table to reach his side. Standing next to him, you can feel a slight tension as he moves his papers to hide what he doesn’t want to show to you, but he is far too polite to tell you no.

“I really don’t think you would be interested.”

“But I am.”

“My dear, I really don’t think you’d be interested.” He probably hoped that would end the conversation, but, unfortunately for him, you are one of the rituals favourite for your cheeky manners.

“Can I sit here?” You ask, ignoring his slight irritation “If I am not being too bold…”

“You are being too bold.” He stares at you, and his expression finally softens, probably aware that he’s not going to get rid of you that easily “But I don’t mind having a bit of company.”

“It must be tiring…” you comment, glancing at all the stuff on the table.

Now Copia stops what he was doing, looking away from you, a casual point in front of him, as hit by a sudden thought.

ok. so. about the passiflora of it all. if you are so naive as to think that that collector crowd have any actual genuine care about tobias and not simply the value of their collection, i just have to laugh. but sure, just for the heck of it, let’s break it down.

1. no one has ever been able to validate that tobias has EVER said anything about not wanting people to hear passiflora. this “statement” has only ever been circulated by people who own the record, with the compelling source of “trust me, bro”.

2. tobias himself uploaded passiflora to myspace back in the day - that’s how we have “house of affection” (which - coincidentally - have been sitting comfortably on youtube for years without any action taken from “tobias’ legal team”). it just didn’t gain any traction, and he eventually deleted it. he might find it a bit cringe (like he does with so far noir and y’all seem to be gobbling that one up regardless of how he feels about it) but it’s not like anyone’s exploiting him if they listen to it. if that were the case, wouldn’t the people owning a copy of it destroy it, to make sure not to traumatize tobias? or are they maybe not THAT concerned with his wellbeing after all…? which leads me to…

3. the huffing and puffing about respecting tobias’ wishes is especially rich coming from the same crowd where someone (we all know who) amongst other things have shown up to a copia m&g dressed up in tobias’ old jean jacket that i don’t even wanna think about how they got their hands on. tobias has, on multiple occasions, asked his fans for ONE thing. don’t break the fourth wall, i.e acknowledge that him and papa are the same person WHILE he’s in papa mode. he gets very self conscious and weirded out when his own image and person gets attached to ghost (especially the live shows) that way. there is so much of that man’s past (photos, notebooks, etc) that is now public information that he has had NO SAY WHATSOEVER in if he wanted seen by other people that collectors have gladly published online without any regards to what tobias may or may not feel about it. maybe he’s totally cool with it, but spare me the hypocrisy, please and thank you.

4. “tobias’ legal team have been notified”. no, someone messaged richie - head of tour security for the last leg of the impera tour - on tiktok. these are… two very different sentences with very different meanings.

5. tobias doesn’t lose any money if passiflora leaks because he was never going to release that album and make money of it anyways. do you also have this kind of energy for people listening to ghost’s cover of “it’s a sin” on youtube? you know, the track that was only supposed to be available for you if you purchased the prequelle exalted box? how about the people listening to “here comes the sun” who haven’t bought the super rare japanese single that had it as a b-side? the ONLY people losing money are the people who bought the cd, and guess what? it’s not as if ALL the value disappears. it’s still a super rare collector’s item. the meliora box sets regularly sell for like $500 even though you can absolutely listen to zenith online.

6. the threat of violence was unnecessary though, however much of a joke it was. it’s the internet, someone will always say something clumsy and dumb.
