this post from @imwiremother got me imagining vampires who take humans as familiars, but not in a renfield way.
the familiar is a blood donor, sure, and gains things like extended life, somewhat enhanced healing, maybe a little increased stength or slightly faster speed, etc, but the sweetest part of the deal for both is a different exchange entirely.
the vampire and familiar share a connection which, when the familiar opens themselves to it, allows the vampire to share certain experiences and sensations. such as the taste of a strawberry, or the warmth of sunlight on the skin, the decadence of chocolate. but it has to be the choice of the familiar to share their experience. they can unilaterally shut down the sharing connection, as a sort of failsafe against abuse.
it's a positive symbiosis which encourages the vampire to provide comfort, safety, health, pleasure, and joy for their familiar, ensuring through self interest if nothing else that the familiar is well cared for and given the best life has to offer so that the vampire may experience the echoes and edges of it, which without a familiar is denied them and eventually lost to them.
quite literally the vampire living vicariously through their familiar. and the familiar gets the better end of the bargain to balance out being on the lower end of the power balance between them.

14. an almost kiss + adan (im coming for jj and weird al's brand)
number 14: …an almost kiss.
it took a while, getting to know the group of friends jaime found himself surrounded with.  it was so easy to tell these people were far more genuine when it comes to the younger man than the bunch of thugs alistair met him and often found him with. ( though the more he looked at them, the idea that all of that was tightly related was something the reaper couldn’t shake off completely. )
the group of young mortals were all very different and alike at the same time, he’d come to learn. it was curious, to say the least. maya, the one who didn’t seem to shoot down any kind of idea, the tiger he met in his dreams if he remembered correctly. ( what a small world. ), the shorter brunette, eliza, with the accent ( boston?  if al had to guess ). very short-fused and with a softer side. amusing. the blonde, victoria, the one who didn’t crack a smile in his direction at all. the three of them very attractive. but if alistair had to pick who of jaime’s friends was the best looking-- blue eyes and pretty smile; ADAN. his name being the easiest one to learn.
“is he taking part in the orgy?” they laughed at maya’s question, adan the loudest. jaime looked like he might renounce life right that second before shaking his head. alistair chuckled. good to know it wasn’t just him the one making him look like that. so far, the reaper liked their humor.
what an interesting mix. the witch, the tiger, the wolf, the human... and the vampire. al couldn’t help but notice that given the order of things and if no one of them tried to defy it. it was adan the one who’d watch them all die the same way immortal beings did. the reaper couldn’t help but wonder on more than one occasion if he was aware of this. if like most vampires he’d met in his eternal lifespan, he feared their loss and the possibility of being left alone.
( just usual thoughts inside a reaper’s head~ )
more people came and went, adding themselves to those parties. but it was always the five of them who stuck together. so much, that al was starting to feel less like an intruder as the months passed. ( was he becoming the sixth? ) it was with that time that he could tell apart their relationship: who got along better with who, those who didn’t like each other as much, and how there was even an engagement in there. ( it was like somehow alistair had his private reality show evolving right in front of him. )
it was that last part that often caught the reaper's attention. he never saw the point of marriage, he didn’t get why people would want that, especially two as young as them. because even then it was pretty obvious there was something quite off. ( aside from the fact, that the orgy joke, hadn’t been an actual joke. )  al had asked jaime what was up with those two, but the witch had only mumbled something about their business and changed the topic.
( al wasn’t as interested. not as much as he was on the dissecting of their latest topic: astral charts. )
the reaper didn’t expect to grow as close as he did with adan. perhaps it was because he was always the one to start the fun or his shameless flirting. or how both of them could outdrink the rest and they were left on their own. the vampire would then suggest jumping in the pool, and when the night was so calm and the stars shining so bright. they would simply talk. about nothing. about everything. just floating on the water as they waited for their skin to soak so much water it wrinkled. ( it would never )  their conversations weren’t as deep as the ones he had with jaime, but it was something nice. it was different. they both could agree on something. their mutual friend was a good guy. and they... they were friends too, right?
“you’re a great friend too, al.” so they were. “as you are, adan.” and there was that wide smile that could be in a toothpaste commercial.
--
“you’re finally here.” adan greeted him behind the door, almost sounding relieved, and it was until alistair stepped inside and looked around that he knew why. everyone was asleep. the night went as it would with just the two of them, except this time they ended up at the game room playing a simple round of, ironically, pool.
they were insanely good, and as one ball was left, it was obvious whoever went next wouldn’t miss the shot. unfortunately for adan, it was alistair’s turn. “hey, give that back!” the reaper called as the vampire grabbed the cue ball. “quiet, al. you’re going to wake them up.” he chuckled and attempted to speed out of the room. he was fast, yes, but he wasn’t counting on al to suddenly appear right in front of him. because surprise, surprise-- with all the questions adan could ask, the reaper had never revealed exactly what he was or what he could do, such as teleporting. it was only a second of those widened eyes, before he grinned and extended his arm back when al tried to reach out for it. they were laughing as the reaper continued to try and get it, while adan teased him and took it back, his back pressed against the table, completely meeting his chest against the reaper’s.
both of them knew what they were doing now, alistair had stopped glancing at the ball in the guy’s hand and instead was meeting adan’s eyes. they had never looked so blue before. ( despite that and how pretty they were, alistair could tell there was a storm behind them. it was more evident now, he wondered if it was because of the proximity. ) their breaths were mixing as their laughs had died and the ball hit the table’s surface as the vampire grabbed the collar of his shirt. the reaper could almost taste him when a voice was heard from the door.
alistair was the one pull away as he looked at the blonde at the door. he was almost expecting anything but what he was currently getting. she wasn’t looking at him but at adan-- her fiancé ( right ), the vampire he was about to kiss. it was beyond the reaper why it seemed like these two mortals had somehow acted like time had stopped. there was nothing, and he knew she had seen them. there wasn’t any reaction from either of them. the reaper could only stand there and look between them until she drew out. “they say it’s time.”
what? when alistair looked again at him. it was like all the joy he’d had seconds ago had never existed in the first place. the reaper couldn’t be more confused in that moment so when jaime showed up next to victoria, looking as tired ( if not more ) than the other two, that he was finally acknowledged.
adan’s hand fell on his shoulder, and he smiled strained ( no toothpaste commercial smile ). “thank you. i’ll.. see you next time.” he didn’t wait for an answer and instead followed her, only leaving the other two men behind. “we should go, al” jaime finally told him.
(  in the end, alistair understood. you didn’t need to be a reaper to have your life completely bought. his new five friends were proof of that. )

i'm just saying, immortal vampire and their mortal best friend with extended lifespan, sharing together in comfort and pleasure and looking after each other's wants and needs for the good of them both, vampires with familiars are more human themselves for having that slender thread of connection with humanity and life, it makes vampires better and enriches their long lives and it keeps humans safe from over-predation and most cruelty. [peer-reviewing the original tags for even more emotion]
