Challenge time!!!
Just for fun I've decided to participate in @caramelcuppaccino's 20 day language learning challenge!
Day 1: Which languages can you speak besides your native language?
The only language I can fully claim to speak beside my native language of English is French, which I can speak at a bout a C1 level thanks to being in a French Immersion program (in my experience, pretty common in Canadian cities,) living in France for a year, and going on an exchange program in the French-speaking region of Switzerland (incredibly grateful for all these opportunities ❤️)
I've also been learning Mandarin for about 3 years now which I can speak at about an HSK3/B1 (approximately) level, though I never actually speak with people out loud so I hesitate to say I can actually speak it...
One of my heritage languages which I've been more serious about in these past couple years is Urdu which I am learning from scratch as I did not grow up with it. I'm not that bad at forming sentences honestly but it's hard to judge my level because especially in urban Pakistan people use English words all the time and it's hard to tell when to use the English word and when ot use the Urdu word. It's still tough for me to carry a conversation though so I would place myself at about A2.
And the last language I can have some credibility to say I can speak is Italian which I've been learning with various levels of seriousness over the past year or so which I'd say I can speak about an A2 level, though I can understand more than I can speak because of all the French cognates.

Inside a sunny classroom in northeast Washington, D.C., Baby Snoopy, Thing One, Spiderman, and other children in costume are busy tucking into lunch when three visitors—including me—disrupt the feast. As I wave, awkwardly, one of the students offers a shy greeting: Ni hao.
That could be because I am Chinese—or because these children spend their days immersed in Mandarin. At the Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School, which I’m visiting on Character Day, 3- and 4-year-olds play, eat, and learn in Mandarin. (Older students are taught in both Mandarin and English.) Having reported on how deteriorating U.S.-China relations have throttled higher education and academic exchanges, I am here on a June morning with a related mission: to see if Washington’s hawkish China consensus has affected demand for Mandarin immersion programs in its own backyard.
Yu Ying was founded in 2008, right as Mandarin mania swept the United States. U.S. officials were largely bullish about the future of U.S.-China relations, and then-U.S. President Barack Obama championed both Mandarin language studies and study abroad in China. With one of his most ambitious initiatives, 1 Million Strong, Obama vowed that 1 million American students would be learning Mandarin by 2020.
“If our countries are going to do more together around the world,” he declared in 2015 alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping in the White House Rose Garden, “then speaking each other’s language, truly understanding each other, is a good place to start.”
By 2011, there were at least 50 Chinese-language immersion programs in the United States—eclipsing just around a dozen programs that had existed six years earlier, according to some estimates. With this momentum, and with demand for Mandarin soaring nationally, a group of parents in the national capital decided to start Yu Ying. (As a public charter school, Yu Ying is tuition-free and publicly funded; unlike traditional schools, it is run by a nonprofit.) Amy Quinn, one of those parents and the school’s current director of teaching and learning, told me that the group “wanted to create the school of their dreams.”
Even the physical walkway into Yu Ying, which serves up to fifth-grade students from around the district, looks different from that of a standard school. A winding red dragon path guides visitors to the school’s front entrance, while red Chinese lanterns dot classrooms. After-school programs can include mixed martial arts and Chinese song and dance, and Mandarin characters are everywhere—from posters lining the school’s walls to class schedules to students’ artwork.
Yet over the school’s 15-year lifespan, the broader optimism that once enveloped U.S.-China ties has vanished. Washington policymakers working just half an hour away from Yu Ying have hardened their rhetoric toward China, and relations have worsened. Those pressures have rippled into universities, casting suspicion over Chinese students, eroding demand for Mandarin language studies, and forcing universities to weigh tough questions about partnerships. Even though experts warn that these collapsing academic exchanges have real-world human and policy ramifications, Ohio lawmakers have introduced a bill that would sever any university ties with Chinese counterparts.
Inside the Yu Ying bubble, these pressures appear distant. Quinn and Carlie Fisherow, the school’s executive director, said that the U.S.-China rivalry hasn’t impacted financing, which comes from city allocations and additional fundraising, and that they retain full autonomy over programming. The school doesn’t receive any money from China or Chinese-affiliated organizations besides those supporting education and the arts, they added.
Demand hasn’t shrunk, either; enrollment based on a lottery system has resulted in a diverse student body, and competition to nab a spot remains steep. The impact of cooling relations “hasn’t borne out in our enrollment data,” Fisherow said. “We continue to have waitlists of more than a thousand kids year over year, and the waitlist just honestly keeps growing.”
Thousands of miles away, in the San Francisco Bay Area, the confluence of heritage speaking communities and wealth has continued to fuel interest in Mandarin immersion programs—despite the frostier geopolitical climate. One such program is the San Francisco-based Presidio Knolls School (PKS), also founded in 2008, which offers Mandarin immersion from preschool through eighth grade for a $38,450 annual price tag.
“In the Bay Area, I think we’re quite insulated from a lot of the developments that we’re seeing nationally,” said Chris Livaccari, the head of PKS and a former U.S. diplomat who did tours of Tokyo and Shanghai, referring to the fact that many local families have personal connections to China or Taiwan.
He likened the mid-2000s Mandarin zeal to the rush to learn Japanese a decade or so earlier—with both seen as a way to gain an advantage in the global economy. “Japanese was the language of the future, and now everything has flip-flopped,” Livaccari said. “I think we’re seeing now what happened with Japanese, which is that the economic and political incentives for, let’s say, middle America to learn the language have gone away.”
Losing these incentives, alongside other factors like staffing challenges, has in some cases led to the end of these programs. An Arizona school district, for example, cut its Mandarin immersion program in 2021 after a six-year run; a Kansas school is currently weighing the future of its program. In both Michigan and Delaware, parent pushback forced school districts to reevaluate closures. But it’s a mixed picture, too: Quinn told me that they hear Mandarin immersion offerings are still growing in states including Minnesota and South Carolina.
Still, the national craze for Mandarin is fading. Across the board, Livaccari said that anecdotal evidence suggests that more programs across the United States are shuttering, particularly in public schools. “Ten or 15 years ago, the parents would be going to the school board and saying: ‘Why don’t we have Chinese? We need Chinese. It’s the language of the future,’” he said. “Now the voices in those cases are more: ‘Why are we doing Chinese? Maybe we don’t want to do this anymore. Maybe we don’t want our kids to be connected to Chinese language or Chinese culture anymore.’”
The threat of worsening relations also looms large for many of the educators and staff underpinning Mandarin immersion programs, especially for those who rely on the convoluted visa system or have family in China. While Yu Ying has remained insulated so far, “schools have become a cultural lightning rod” on a national level, Fisherow said. “We will continue to lose educators if, as a country and a community, we do not treat schools with the care they deserve.”
In the past, PKS and similar schools in the Bay Area have typically planned annual student trips to China and Taiwan. This year, in part because of China’s slow reopening from COVID-19 restrictions, they pivoted to Taiwan. Livaccari hopes that next year will be different.
“We do hope next year that we’ll be able to get back to mainland China as well, because we want our kids to have an understanding of the whole landscape of the Chinese-speaking world,” he said. “However wrongheaded the government is, it’s still 1.3 billion-plus people that we want our kids to be engaged with.”

Smart Classrooms: Bringing Global Education to Local Learners
Tumblr media
The world is more connected than ever, and education is no exception. With rapid advancements in technology, the concept of smart classrooms is revolutionizing traditional learning, making global education accessible to local learners. Whether in a bustling city or a remote village, students now have access to the best teachers, latest resources, and interactive learning experiences—bridging the gap between local and global education.
What is a Smart Classroom?
A smart classroom is an advanced learning space that integrates digital tools, interactive technologies, and online resources to enhance the educational experience. Unlike conventional classrooms, smart classrooms use:
Digital boards & projectors to replace traditional blackboards
High-speed internet connectivity for real-time access to global resources
E-learning platforms to provide a flexible, self-paced learning experience
Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) for immersive learning
AI-powered tools & data analytics to personalize education
By leveraging these tools, smart classrooms foster interactive and dynamic learning environments that cater to different learning styles.
Bridging the Gap: Global Knowledge, Local Access
1. Learning from Global Experts
Smart classrooms enable students to attend virtual lectures from top educators worldwide. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and edX bring Ivy League courses to students who might never have the opportunity to study abroad. Live-streamed classes, expert guest lectures, and online workshops ensure that knowledge is not limited by geography.
2. Access to World-Class Study Material
Gone are the days when students had to rely solely on outdated textbooks. Digital libraries, open educational resources (OER), and AI-curated content provide updated, real-time access to the latest research and study materials.
3. Breaking Language Barriers
AI-driven translation tools and subtitles enable students to learn from global educators without language constraints. Whether a lecture is in English, Spanish, or Mandarin, real-time translations make quality education more inclusive.
4. Personalized Learning Paths
AI and data analytics in smart classrooms help tailor educational content based on a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning pace. This personalized approach enhances retention and ensures a better learning experience.
5. Hands-on & Immersive Learning
Augmented and virtual reality make complex concepts more engaging. Imagine a history lesson where students can virtually explore ancient civilizations or a biology class where they can experience the human body in 3D. Such interactive learning significantly improves understanding and retention.
6. Bridging Socioeconomic Divides
Smart classrooms empower students from underprivileged backgrounds by providing access to quality education at minimal costs. Many government and nonprofit organizations are working towards equipping schools with digital infrastructure to ensure no child is left behind.
Challenges & the Way Forward
While smart classrooms present a promising future, challenges such as internet connectivity, lack of digital literacy, and affordability remain. Governments, ed-tech companies, and educational institutions must collaborate to address these challenges through:
Investment in digital infrastructure to improve internet access in rural areas
Training programs for teachers to adapt to digital teaching methods
Affordable smart classroom solutions for schools in low-income regions
Public-private partnerships to drive innovation and accessibility
Conclusion
Smart classrooms are revolutionizing education by making global learning accessible to local students. They empower learners with knowledge, skills, and experiences that were once out of reach. As technology continues to evolve, the dream of a world where every student, regardless of location, has access to the best education is becoming a reality.
The future of education is here, and it is smart, inclusive, and borderless.

Tumblr media
Why Choose to Study in China?
China’s appeal as a study destination stems from its commitment to educational excellence, its affordability, and its unique cultural experiences. Here are some reasons why more than 500,000 international students choose to study in China every year:
1. World-Class Universities
China is home to several top-ranked universities recognized globally for their academic excellence. Institutions such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Fudan University consistently rank among the best in the world. Many Chinese universities offer programs taught in English, catering to international students who may not yet be proficient in Mandarin. Additionally, the Chinese government’s focus on education and innovation has led to significant investments in research and development, making it an attractive destination for STEM students.
2. Affordable Education
Compared to studying in Western countries, the cost of tuition and living in China is significantly lower. Scholarships provided by the Chinese government, such as the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS), make it even more affordable for international students to study in China. These scholarships often cover tuition, accommodation, and even a stipend for daily expenses.
3. Cultural Immersion
China’s rich history and diverse culture make it a fascinating place to live and learn. From exploring ancient landmarks like the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army to experiencing modern cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen, studying in China offers students a unique blend of tradition and innovation. Moreover, learning Mandarin, one of the most spoken languages in the world, can open doors to countless opportunities in the global job market.
4. Career Prospects
China’s booming economy and strong ties with international markets mean that graduates from Chinese universities are well-positioned for successful careers. Many multinational companies have a presence in China, and understanding the Chinese market and culture can be a significant asset. Furthermore, China’s Belt and Road Initiative has increased its influence in Asia, Africa, and Europe, creating opportunities for professionals with expertise in Chinese affairs.
Popular Fields of Study in China
While students can pursue virtually any academic discipline in China, some fields are particularly popular due to the country’s strengths and global reputation:
Engineering and Technology: China’s advancements in technology and infrastructure make it a hub for engineering students. Universities like Tsinghua and Zhejiang are renowned for their engineering programs.
Medicine: China’s medical universities, such as Beijing Medical University and Tongji University, attract students seeking affordable yet high-quality education in medicine. Many of these programs are taught in English.
Business and Economics: As a global economic leader, China offers unparalleled opportunities to study business and economics. Shanghai’s financial hub and Beijing’s policy centers provide real-world insights and networking opportunities.
Mandarin Language and Chinese Studies: For those interested in mastering Mandarin or delving into Chinese history, politics, and culture, studying in China provides an immersive experience unmatched elsewhere.
The Application Process for International Students
The process to study in China is straightforward but requires careful planning. Here are the steps:
1. Choose Your Program and University
Decide on the program and university that align with your academic goals. Research whether the program is taught in English or Mandarin and verify its accreditation.
2. Check Eligibility and Requirements
Each university in China has its own admission criteria. Common requirements include:
A completed application form.
Academic transcripts and certificates.
Proof of English or Mandarin proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or HSK scores).
A personal statement or study plan.
Letters of recommendation.
3. Apply for Scholarships
If you’re seeking financial assistance, research scholarships such as:
Chinese Government Scholarships (CGS).
Confucius Institute Scholarships.
Provincial or university-specific scholarships.
4. Submit Your Application
Apply online through the university’s website or China’s official study platform, the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Ensure you meet all deadlines and provide accurate documentation.
5. Obtain a Student Visa
Once accepted, you’ll need to apply for an X1 or X2 student visa, depending on the duration of your studies. Requirements for the visa include:
Admission letter.
JW202 form (visa application form for international students).
Passport with validity of at least six months.
Health examination certificate.
Life as an International Student in China
Studying in China is an enriching experience that goes beyond academics. Here’s what you can expect as an international student:
1. Accommodation
Most universities offer on-campus dormitories for international students, providing an affordable and convenient living option. Off-campus housing is also available for those seeking more independence, though it may require navigating rental agreements in Mandarin.
2. Cost of Living
The cost of living in China is relatively low compared to Western countries. Monthly expenses, including food, transportation, and housing, range from $400 to $800, depending on the city. Cities like Beijing and Shanghai are more expensive, while smaller cities offer even more affordable living.
3. Cultural Adaptation
Adapting to life in China requires an open mind and a willingness to embrace new experiences. From tasting authentic Chinese cuisine to understanding local customs and festivals, living in China is a cultural adventure. Many universities provide orientation programs and language courses to help international students settle in.
4. Language Barrier
While many programs are taught in English, learning basic Mandarin is essential for daily life. Simple phrases like “Ni Hao” (你好, Hello) and “Xie Xie” (谢谢, Thank you) can go a long way in building connections and navigating everyday situations.
5. Networking Opportunities
China’s diverse student population allows you to network with peers from around the globe. Joining clubs, attending events, and participating in internships can enhance your experience and broaden your professional prospects.
Challenges of Studying in China
While there are numerous benefits to studying in China, it’s important to be aware of potential challenges:
Language Barrier: Even in major cities, not everyone speaks English fluently. Learning Mandarin is crucial for a smoother experience.
Cultural Differences: Adapting to a new culture can be challenging. Be patient and respectful of local traditions and customs.
Air Pollution: Some cities in China, like Beijing, experience high levels of air pollution. Invest in quality air purifiers and masks if you’re studying in such areas.
Distance from Home: Living far from home can be daunting. However, the support of fellow international students and modern communication tools can ease homesickness.
Tips for a Successful Experience
To make the most of your decision to study in China, consider these tips:
Learn Mandarin: Enroll in language classes before or during your stay to enhance your communication skills and deepen your cultural understanding.
