Scientific Name: Erythemis simplicicollis
Common Name(s): Eastern pondhawk
Family: Libellulidae (skimmer)
Life Stage(s): Adult
Location: Plano, Texas
Season(s): Summer
This is a mature adult female. Mature adult males of this species are blue, but immature males and mature females are both green. To tell the difference, look at the claspers at the end of the abdomen: males have a prominent pair of cerci (“superior appendages”) and a single epiproct (“inferior appendage”); these are used for grasping during mating. Females, in comparison, have smaller appendages. Head over to BugGuide for more identification tips and photos.
