“GoodmorningShiraYuki.” Shaw found the ninja at lunch, an almost impossible feat for anyone who’d spent less time around her. “Youlookhappytoday.”

The Anaty, mask down by necessity, had broken into an acute smile as the Zalak sat down. “Yes.”

“Imhappyforyou. Itsrareforme toseeyoursmile thisearlyintheday butitsalwayssweet.”

“Mmm.” ShiraYuki blushed as she pulled an apple from what might as well have been a pocket dimension. Seriously, where did she get that from? Either way, she rolled it across the table, settling it perfectly onto Shaw’s tray next to her plate. “Bought this for you.”

Lungmen’s petite protector beamed. “Thankyoudear wheredidyou findsucha perfectapple?”

“Produce aisle. Ran an errand. Saw it there. Thought of you.” As she usually was, to be fair, when not focused on her duties.

It’s hard to say when they first met, but in an odd way, their devotion to their jobs actually drew them together; few of their co-workers, it seemed, understood the sacrifices they made to ensure their work was done to the best of their abilities, and while their paths rarely crossed, it was usually during one of their few but necessary breaks. Shaw associated ShiraYuki with cool air and crisp apples, especially since the Anaty had a knack for finding the sweetest ones and, after learning of the Zalak’s love for them, started bringing them with her in hopes of being able to give them to her. For ShiraYuki, Shaw was the perfect conversationalist - she talked fast and, at least around her, often, but the Zalak was also an excellent listener when the ninja did have something she wanted to say. Socializing wasn’t her style, but having company was something she still enjoyed every now and again, and her firefighter friend was perfect for that.

After coming to Rhodes Island, the pair found themselves living in the same building and working on-call rather than constantly, as they had for Lungmen, and it just made sense to both of them to spend the extra time they now had together. They made other acquaintances, sure, but they only needed one person in their lives like this, so...yeah.

“Ivebeenthinking aboutsomethingtoday.” Shaw pulled out a scratchpad and slid it to ShiraYuki. “Wroteitdown soIdidnt forgetitlater butitsstayed onmymind withoutaproblem whatdoyouthink?”

“...Sounds nice. Need to see it.” The ninja looked over the bullet point description of a two-bedroom apartment in a different building from their current one. They’d talked about moving in together for a few weeks now, working through some of the logistics, and the Zalak had taken it upon herself to do the groundwork.

She nodded. “IaskedifI couldtakeashift offsowecould seeittogether tomorrowafternoon ifthat’san okaytimeforyou.”

“Yes.” The Anaty’s smile widened almost imperceptibly. “Thank you.”

“IlltelltheDoctor thenexttimeI seehimthen...IthinkI havetogoback tothestationnow butIllseeyou tonightafterI gethomefromwork?”

ShiraYuki nodded, sliding the notepad back to Shaw. “My place?”

“Yeahminestill smellslikesmoke fromthepopcornthing.”

“I see.” She laughed, a soft ‘kee-hee-hee’ fitting for someone so accustomed to stealth. “See you tonight.”

The Zalak hopped out of her chair, tray still on the table, to give her a hug before setting off for the shuttle; the ninja followed her with her eyes until the fire chief was out of sight, and then she finished her drink and redonned her mask. She wondered how Shaw felt about the kiss she snuck in, or if she’d read the note she’d written on the pad before handing it back to her.

Shaw, meanwhile, was having to fight a fire in her heart after doing just that. ‘Howdoesshe alwayssurpriseme whenshedoesthat everytime...Illsurprisehersoon IknowIwill shecantbe expectingthat.’ She patted the pocket of her uniform closest to her chest, where she’d put a fireproof box. Inside was a promise to be made, one she knew the Anaty would agree to, but not yet. There were still some other things she had to set up first...
