@atlantianchronicle Had to do bit of digging to back up my answer so it wouldn’t look like I’m spitballing (update: I spitballed). I used mostly G1 logic and history making this, and I too am still limited on transformer knowledge because my brain needs to absorb more juice. As for now… this headcanon is wild. that’s all i have to say.

So before we start I’m going to throw in a bonus. This will explain the making and meaning behind what makes the pillar men cybertronian pillar men. Plus, it’ll help you better understand what I’m throwing at you.

Kars first transformed himself into what i would call a ‘Spark Mutant’.

My definition of a spark mutant is the alteration of a cybertronians spark. Imagine if a humans genes were rearranged and deconstructed before being remade into a different creature. When a spark mutation happens, the genetic coding, mind, and body of a cybertronian are created and destroyed (think back to the scene in the movie Bolt when Bolt transforms).

The reason I call them spark mutants, emphasis on mutant, is because they somewhat have the same nature as mutants (mutants rule the underworld, far down the many levels of Cybertron, enemies to the cybertronians living on the surface, hostile to outsiders; already similar to the nature of the pillar men. Hence why I chose to call the cybertronian pillar men spark mutants, scientifically speaking. And for the ‘spark’ in spark mutants, I simply took the spark out of sparkeater and put it there (nothing special-ish).

Effects of Kars’ spark mutation allow him to feed on sparks the same as a sparkeater, yet maintain a balanced form and complete control over his hunger. Due to the consumption of sparks, it has allowed any spark mutants to live on, presumably immortal, and allowed rapid growth to the body. Rapid growth as in constant evolution, regeneration, stamina, and other physical abilities; including the ability to transform without a t-cog (transformation without a t-cog drains energy making them vunerable. if your ever in a rare confrontation with a spark mutant and duking it out, try to force them to transform, it is their best weakness).

I wouldn’t compare spark mutants to be similar to a prime, but they match in power (sometimes intellect depending on who is the spark mutant). Spark mutants would best be compared to a super soldier abomination. Primes are chosen by the Matrix, spark mutants are defects of sparkeater configuration.

And a side note on Kars’ title for his new species of cybertronians, they take on the name ‘The Pillars of Cybertron’ or for short ‘The Cyber Pillars’ (I’m sorry my brain can’t think of anything super fabulous for them, maybe later I’ll find something better).

Now onto the Cyber Pillar race and how it began ( i tried to incorporate as much of the original story as possible into this one but with a transformers twist so it doesn’t derail. plus i put some history in it, most of which is headcanonly written by yours truly).

This kind-of turned into a short story recreating the pillar mens uprising but transformers styled, but I hope it gives some more details to my answer and why I think so (plus I got carried away, this was very fun to write. Aaaand I think it’ll help anyone who isn’t familiar with transformers and is confused as all hell better understand what’s happening without doing any research. Boom, double bonus. your welcome).

Anywho- let’s start with time, yes? How long ago was it when the rise of the spark mutants began?

It started during the time Primus created Cybertron twelve million years ago, then came the first wave of cybertronians to roam its surface. However, the mutants (talkin G1 Mutants) lived scattered underground in small groups, Kars and Esidisi among one of them (same quantity as the pillar men originally started before humans).

Living and thriving plentifully, it was until the Matrixes were distributed to the first Primes above ground, Kars grew envious not only of their gift, but their power of transformation as well (he’s always dreamed of evolving into a better species like the cybertronians above). Greedily, he searched for a way to attain any source of power that will match that of a Primes, until he came across the ability to create sparkeaters (like how he created the stone masks and caused the DIO incident, but that’s another story for another time). He tested this new ability on random cybertronians he captured from the surface. Unfortunately it proved to be far more dangerous than Kars had anticipated, quickly failing to see how unstable sparkeater are and its transformations can be. It was until Kars stumbled upon a unique technique of altering a spark and processors natural state.

Thus, he created a mask (insert the stone mask and its properties here yata yata yata-) to connect to his brain module and alter his mind and spark. Kars continued to test the new mask on himself, having enough confidence and bravery that this would be the perfect transformation. It was a gruesome process, having undergoing the change to sparkeater tears apart his body and mind, splitting him inhalf before reconnecting in a bright flash of light. Afterwards, he was stable and out of energy. And no matter how much energon he consumed, it was never enough, until he found his taste in sparks. Realizing this newfound power, he went on to feast and thrive off sparks of the surface cybertronians for hundreds years while living amongst his underground brethren. It was then he met Esidisi, who soon joined him, and became his conjunx (hell yes I’ve wanted to say that for a long time).

But with the rapid amount of cybertronians being found without their sparks, husks of the dead being descovered raised suspicion above. Word hadn’t gotten to the Primes yet, but it had reached the rest of the mutants underground. They were furious with Kars’ reckless ness and hunger for power, they decided that if they did not eliminate Kars, the Primes will find the mutants and have them all exterminated. And so, they challenged Kars and Esidisi. (you all know what happens next) Kars and Esidisi make quick work of the mutants, slaughtering them and feasting on their sparks. They left the scene for the surface to live secretly alongside the surface cybertronians. It was hundreds of years later they found two abandoned protoforms; Esidisi insisted on having children (Kars knew Esidisi has always wanted to be a sire when they left the underground), and adopted the two, dubbing them Wamuu and Santana (haha babies). And when they finally grew old enough, Kars titled themselves Cybertron first Cyber Pillars.

It’s then millions of years later, before before Orion Pax becomes Optimus Prime, Kars has yearned for more power, to go beyond his current state and reach that of Primus himself. And so began their quest for the All Spark, yet the quest as proven too impossible for them when the war between the Autobots and the Decepticon broke out. As a last resort, the Cyber Pillars went into stasis, awaiting the right moment to awake when the war is over so they can resume their quest.

To this day, they sleep peacefully somewhere on Cybertron. Until… A SOMETHING HAPPENED! OOH NOOOOO-

Emitting lethal beams of energy in the Allspark Studios today is cold, brutal and scientific Siege Shockwave!  Will emotional thinking ruin his clarity of thought, or will he give in to the feels and adopt a Littlest Pet Shop puppy for a shelf companion?  Tune after the break to find out!

G1 Shockwave was one of my holiest of grails, alongside Jetfire.  I remember being on the playground in 2nd or 3rd grade when the rich kid in our school pulled out both to show off.  Shockwave mesmerized me due to the powerful look of the laser gun mode, and the fact that this toy resembled the character on the cartoon, unlike Megatron.  I had to have him…but don’t remember actually ever seeing him in a store.   I do remember a weekend trip to Pensacola, Florida that led us by a Radio Shack where I once saw the grey “Shackwave”, who was one of the first G1 figures I bought on eBay back in 2000.  I would not get the real Shockwave until Botcon 2005, and that one sits in his original packaging to this day.  He has been joined by a minty Shockwave I display, as well as numerous iterations, minus one of my current white whales, the Botcon 2012 customization class figure.  All of this to say, I am a bit illogically obsessed with the logical oriented character.

Siege Shockwave appeared to be a dream come true.  Initial pictures showed he had all the best design cues from the original figure, loads of articulation, and a neat set of armor to throw into the mix.  I was so excited that I began to worry if Shockwave would be able to live up to my expectations.  Let’s give the toy and look and see how it measure up!

Spaceship/Gun/Destroyer Mode

The spaceship mode for Shockwave is an upside-down gun.  It’s not going to do any G1 fans pining for a real blaster any good, however, because at the current size, this laser gun would only fit a toddler’s hand.  I imagine this could be one of the figures targeted by the KO industry for an upsize, as the most common complaints I see online are related to the size of the leader class figures.  But I digress…

Resemblance to a weapon aside, spaceship mode fits with quite a few of Shockwave’s legacy forms, such as the most recent Walgreen’s exclusive, Combiner Wars Shockwave, and the FOC Shockwave.  I love the idea of Shockwave becoming a battleship.  In my fanon, he designs full size battleships based on his current alt-mode, because logically he chooses the most powerful forms, and these ships are his personal battalion.  It’s silly, but I love to display his vehicle modes, and it gives me a reason.  😀

While I am not a huge fan of the overloaded surface details of the Siege line, it does look good on Shockwave’s vehicle modes, even if I would have preferred smoother panels.  Other neat details include incorporating the hose from robot mode into the spaceship, as well as a uni-eye at the front of what I imagine is the bridge from the tower.  Another cool piece is the “gun” barrel as the front of the ship.  They could have really gone out of their way to make this appear less like a blaster muzzle, but they didn’t, and I love it.  I can imagine Autobots seeing this battleship and turning their own around, not willing to risk a fight with a flying cannon.

You an take this mode into overkill mode and really make an impressive battleship by incorporating the armor.  Doing so beefs up the front end of the ship, adds more engines, and additional cannons just behind the bow and to the sides of the new engines.  If an Autobot ship were afraid of the regular spaceship mode, this cruiser is frightening enough to make an entire fleet turn tail and run.  This is the best Decepticon battleship yet created, and I must admit I am so enamored with it that I want to have an extra to leave in this mode at all times.  Fortunately, the cold logic of my empty wallet has silenced the impulse…for now.

Robot Mode

Where do I start?  Siege Shockwave is 96% the Shockwave of my dreams.  Why only 96%?  What happened to the other 4%?  Well, I am taking off 4 points due to a few minor issues I have with the toy.  Let’s cover those now and get back to the absurd lovefest.  I am deducting 1 percentage point of love for the following issues:

  The purple, while reminiscent of the G1 figure, has way too much blue and not enough red. Simply put, he’s not the right shade of purple.

His neck has some articulation, but I expected more. I think the worst part of this is that the hinge that holds his backpack is the biggest limiting factor in the movement.  He should be able to move his head around with greater range, and neck articulation continues to be an issue for the current design team.  I see improvements here and in the Siege line, but I want consistency across figures.

The details are overly busy. I get that they wanted more detail than the smooth panels of the G1 figure, however this is overload, and unnecessary.  I wish they had come to a middle ground before finishing this mold.

He is too small. I feel like this is mostly due to increased parts and joints for the mold, and I cannot completely fault them for that…but that makes him less for me by 1%.  I would say the same applies to Ultra Magnus.

All negatives aside, this is a glorious rendition of Shockwave in robot mode.  He has the right build and proportions.  He has an actual rubber(ish) hose.  He has some of the best damn light-piping ever seen in a Transformer.  Beyond his backpack, he has no hollow spaces, which while I was never bothered by them, they were the bane of some fans’ existence.  Shockwave also comes PACKED with articulation!  He has:

  ankle tilts

ratcheting knees

lateral thigh articulation

double rotary hips

rotating waist

double rotary shoulders

lateral bicep articulation

rotating elbows

rotating wrists

ball jointed neck with some limitation in backwards and forwards movement

This figure can get into basically any of the classic Shockwave poses.  My favorite is the pose from the cover to Marvel Comic’s “The Transformers” #5.

  Hover Mode/Armored Mode

Personally, I love the hovercraft mode most out of these configurations.  I can see Shockwave using this to loom over his enemies and his subordinates, as well as providing a tactical advantage in battle while remaining in robot mode.  It is an ingenious use of armor parts, and I hope we get more of this in the future.

The armored mode answers the question; do I need a Shockwave with more gun arm?  The answer is yes.  Yes, you do.  And now you get a Shockwave with 3-gun arms, two laser feet, and a bulked up backpack which must hold a larger power source.  If regular Shockwave was not firepower overkill, this mode definitively is.  While I must admit it is fun, mine won’t be staying in this mode.  I much prefer G1 Shockwave riding in on his hover platform, and that is how he will be displayed.

Recommendation

I give Siege Shockwave 9.6 multiples of 10 on the logic scale!  He hits all the right stops, looks like the ultimate update to G1 Shockwave, comes with more than enough articulation, and the C.O.M.B.A.T. system armor adds tons of playability and 3 additional modes to this nuclear powerhouse of a figure.  While I did not cover transformation in detail, I am pleased to find he is not super difficult yet contains a few neat steps that add fun to the process, like the formation of the “muzzle” and spaceship tower.  Kids will like him.  Older fans will LOVE him, and that is something Shockwave would dismiss as he has no time for expressions of emotion.

Don’t let that stop you!  Siege Shockwave is beginning to really hit stores in force now, so get out there and add to your Decepticon army!

Nov 6 Dancitron Movie Night - Spider-Man: Homecoming

Guess what Prowl wasn’t here! He missed the whole movie. He missed it because Bonecrusher had a nervous breakdown and he and the Constructicons spent the whole evening dealing with it. Their room is rather a little bit trashed now.

Prowl showed up after the movie was over to ask Soundwave to leave Bonecrusher alone. In the process, he somehow managed to grievously offend Tarantulas.

Had he sounded angry earlier tonight, when he was explaining to Soundwave what happened? He hadn't meant to. But had he come on too strong? Had he been dropping a hint about Prowl's attitude, when he'd mentioned that Prowl's social limits were restricted when he was stressed? Had Soundwave been telling Prowl he was being offensive? Had Prowl missed it? Should he call back and apologize? Had he already missed his chance to apologize?*

Foully stinking up the Allspark Studio today is Amphibious Assault Seacon Gulf/Skalor!  Will this polluting parasite leave a trail of grease and toxic chemicals all over your shelf, or will he finally see the error of his ways and start a recycling program with the other bots on your shelf?  Tune in after the break to find out!

Sadly, I never even saw the Seacons during the original G1 run.  My first exposure to the designs was during the Beast Wars II toy series of the late 90’s.  Being a fan of both G1 and Beast Wars, I couldn’t help but be enamored with the figures, though my budget at the time only allowed for a late in the game grab of a set with no combiner parts off BBTS that I think was the result of a find in a flooded warehouse (more on that in another review).  I wanted to get a complete set, and never imagined that one day Hasbro would release them in the original toy colors, especially after I missed the Timelines Seacons set released by FunPub (I STILL need that set).

To my further surprise, TakaraTomy (and Hasbro) went all in on the Seacon love and gave us the currently being released Generations Selects set, remolded from several Terrorcon molds and the Moonracer mold.  In spite of many things being on lockdown due to COVID-19 at the moment, the Generations Select Seacons have finally made it to the United States and have begun to trickle out in groups of 2 through the mail.  Today we will look at Gulf/Skalor, a remold of the Terrorcon Blot.

Colors

Before we really get started, let’s talk about colors.  One of the first things Western fans will note is that the colors on the Generations selects figures do not match the G1 toys exactly.  There is a good reason for that, and one I had totally forgotten until I was reminded by fellow Allspark staffer SoS.

  You see, my only exposure to the G1 Seacons came as an adult, out of a wonderful discovery that, being a speaker of Spanish, I would get to enjoy all of the Japanese G1 shows in a dub language I understood.  It has been a long time since I watched Super God Masterforce en español, and I had forgotten about the colors used in the cartoon, which Takara has matched in the Generations Selects line.  So, there you have it, the reason for the colors not matching the toys.

  Beast Mode

Gulf’s beast mode of that of a legged coelacanth-style monster.  Most of the form is accomplished by completely changing the Blot beast head.  Even so, when it comes to reproducing the original figure’s var-mode, there are definitely some liberties taken.  The front legs, teeth, and most of the beast head are a nice recreation of G1 Skalor.  Scales are, interestingly enough, one of the liberties I just mentioned.  The back is formed by the unchanged Blot robot legs, and with all of the other remolding that happened to bring this figure about, I imagine more edits just weren’t in the budget.  Scales on the back would have also changed the robot mode, so I can see why this call was made.  Budget likely also played into the decision to leave the beast mode rear legs unchanged from the Blot mold.

The tail is clearly inspired by the original figure but takes a nice turn in becoming a weapon (or an alt-mode propulsion system).  The fin on the back can move forward and reminds me of the way a catfish can stick you in self-defense.  Considering the dorsal fin of some catfish contains a venomous substance and Skalor here is known to be toxic, I think the observation fits.

Skalor’s jaws open and close, giving a satisfying “biting action” to the vicious looking figure.  His forearms can sadly only move up and down due to being installed via large flat pins.  It’s very G1, but in this case, it’s not a good thing.  Considering the beast head is a completely new piece, it is a disappointment that they went this route instead of using a ball joint, especially since these limbs never support any weight.

Despite what might seems like a few too many negative points, I really like this mode.  It looks sinister and primordial, and I would NOT want to go up against this beast!  Gulf balances well, and can stand horizontal like his original pose, or tilt to a degree.  I really love how you can flip the tail around to reveal the blaster, which can give the impression he can go into “high velocity” mode, zipping through the waters of whatever planet he finds himself on at the moment.  It is even better that his “spine” sword, side cannons, and his combiner hand can all be integrated into this mode.  If this figure was sold in regular stores, I think it would have been a hit with kids.  Unfortunately, this is an exclusive with a hefty price tag.

Robot Mode

This is another case of “inspired by” for Skalor’s robot mode.  The only remolding for robot mode is in the forearms, and head.  Gulf maintains the overall color scheme, with most of the blues landing where the teals appear on the G1 mold.  Same thing for the pink elements, with the notable addition of pink feet, which make up for the pink beast forearms being absent on the lower robot legs for this mold.  There are no fins on the robot forearms, but they do slightly swell outward, though not as drastically as the G1 figure’s forearms.  The head is a nicely square-ish update of the G1 “peg-head”, bringing over all the necessary design elements to give it the proper look.

Articulation from this mode is what you should expect from mainline figures:

Thigh swivel

Ball-jointed hips

Waist swivel

Ball-jointed shoulders

Ball-jointed elbows

Ball-jointed head

Sadly, while I continue to laud Hasbro and Takara for the skill of their current design teams, they still have an issue with the range of motion on ball-jointed heads.  It makes no sense that a ball-jointed head would have so little range.  Please Takara Tomy and Hasbro, find a way to improve this one thing.  It is a consistent disappointment on what are otherwise some of the best updates on characters to date.

This is not all bad news, however.  As you can see from the pictures, this is a nicely poseable figure, as should be expected.  The 3 guns and spine sword give him sufficient armory for battle, and the tilts on his wrists even remind one of how soldiers sometimes carry their weapons in real life.  I like this figure enough that I already wish I had ordered a second one to leave uncombined once I have the entire set.

Arm/Leg Mode

Being part of a combiner, Gulf/Skalor can be placed into both arm and leg mode, a la Scramble City.  While I am sure I have a true preference, he makes a very solid leg, which cannot be said for all combiner limbs.

As of the writing of this review I only have two Seacons in hand, so here is Piranacon using just Turtler and Gulf for the time being:

Overall Thoughts

Articulation nitpicks aside, this is a great figure!  Gulf/Skalor is a nicely “faithful” re-interpretation of the Generation One figure and character.  He poses well in both modes, makes a good leg or arm in combiner mode, and comes with an arsenal of weapons to use in his struggle against the Autobots.  He is a fun figure that is probably a little out of the budget for smaller fans, but collectors will love him.

Hopefully we will get to enjoy him more as a Beast Wars II repaint.  (You know you want to, TakaraTomy).
