Rest in Mystery
Saturday morning, while going through my routine, I came across this article by Zach Miller.  Zach is an elite, sponsored, ultra-runner.  He is also, originally from Lancaster, PA 😊. Growing and spending the majority of my life in PA provided an instant connection to him.  Plus, he is a great runner, and from what I’ve learned from following the last couple of years, a pretty cool human being.  He runs with heart and all out, no matter what the race is, and has a great perspective on life, as this article with show.  For the last 4+ years he has been a caretaker at Barr Camp on Pikes Peak.  I wasn’t familiar with this until I started learning more about Zach over the years. The article gets into some details but you can learn more about it here! Pretty selfless and hardnosed mission!
 https://www.irunfar.com/2020/01/but-what-if-its-good.html
Once again, the Universe provides thought, wisdom and guidance when needed.  Side note, this is another one of those reasons why I love the sport of ultra & trail running.  I guess technically, this article isn’t about either, but I came to know Zach from following him on social media because he is in the sport.  Well, and from PA which I though was pretty awesome 😊! Point is this sport is an incredible metaphor for life.  There have been many articles and books that I’ve read about the culture that offer so much great nuggets, this one is no different.  That said, as you will read in the article, Zach is at a point in life where he is taking on a new change, not knowing where that change may take him or, what types of risk lay ahead.  This got me thinking a lot since we are in a similar type place.  Looking at 2020 embarking on a new venture, new changes, new sacrifices AND, having no idea where the road may lead.  I wrote about it here last week!!
I encourage you to read the article because it is an interesting read but also inspiring.  I learned and was able to reflect on a few areas as we tackle this new journey.  Perspective is incredibly and learning from others different ways to look at things is appreciated.  That in mind, I have taken out a few of the most moving quotes from the article to share and add some thoughts.  Some of them are from Zach himself, and the others are from his sister Ashley. Thanks to you both Zach & Ashley – great piece and wonderful wisdom.
"Leave what's good for the unknown?"
The unknown can be scary, hard, tough to get through, difficult!  Just thinking about that which we don’t know can cause anxiety, stress, and night terrors!! Well, maybe not night terrors but fear, uncertainty and doubt 😊!  I’ve shared this before and have passed on this message from so many others, I think in 99% of the cases in life, when we are starting something new, it is very likely we are going to suck at it!! Why? Because IT IS UNKNOWN!!  Whether we are starting a new job, putting in a fence, replacing a light switch, getting married, or being a parent; the first time we experience any of it, we don’t know.  Therefore, when the opportunity for change presents itself in the form in any type of opportunity, we tend to want to stay where we are, in that Comfort Zone!! Been there hundreds of times.  “I am in a good place right now, why change?” Or my favorite, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So, we typically stay in what’s good, rather than embracing the unknown.
This leads us to the next quote, “But what if it’s good?”
The fear can tend to way heavily on us when contemplating life changing decisions.  Why risk what we know what is good for something that is going to be hard, challenging, and what if we fail at it?  This is a change in mindset.  We are conditioned to protect ourselves, therefore, our mind goes right to survival mode.  Then, we get clouded by that fear and the what ifs? What if its hard? What if I fail? What if I suck? What if I look like a fool? That “worst case scenario” bullshit. But, what if, just what if, this change is good? What if this change is great?
Another great transition - "What if I'm on my way to something better than I can yet imagine?"
Similar thoughts from the last quote but I got much more excited and emotional as I began to visualize what can happen.  Goosebumps on my arms, and tingles, just thinking about where this next step in the journey can take us.  So much more fun than thinking about the challenges and obstacles that can happen along the way.  I get it, again, just like running an ultramarathon, shit is going to happen, and, in some cases, it is nothing you can ever even conjure up.  Getting a flat tire on the way to the race for example. We can drive ourselves batty trying to think about, and plan for what may happen, in a race or life.  We need to be aware of the fact that it won’t be easy, but “trust your training.” Another great quote from so many wise folks, have faith that you are ready for this and see what happens.  Well, maybe you aren’t ready, and that’s okay, but even so, imagine how fun an exciting this new, “unknown” adventure, is going to be. I think are mind immediately goes to that “worst case” scenario stuff but it is so much more fun to think about the joy and fulfillment that may, just may, come out of this process!!
"What if I learn to rest in mystery & grace."
This last one was the best one, in my opinion. I talked about wanting to get better at surrendering to God and letting go of ego in 2020.  Working to let life happen and seeing where our chips may fall, while continue to stay true to my commitments and standards.  This quote, which I believe was by Zach’s sister Ashley, was so beautiful.  Being able to accept the mystery that lies ahead and having grace that wherever the path may lead you is the exactly where you are mean to be.  A different way to say some of what has been mentioned in the past, but this resonated with me so much more.  Simple word choices and a much more profound impact, on me at least.  It helps me be more present and grateful in the current moment.  Appreciated the process and the journey.  Reminds of a lesson, replacing the word “have” with “get.” “I have to go run 20 miles today,” vs. “I get to run 20 miles today.” Is that having grace? Gratitude? Appreciation for where we are, what we have, and the journey we are on? Of course, the path we are on is going to get scary and it is all a mystery.  Remember as kids, we imagined being adventurers in the backyard?  Whatever it was, we imagined being something, a firefighter, gymnast, scientist, singer, etc.!!  There was no unknown, we were just resting in that mystery and the thing was, it wasn’t a mystery to us, it was our creative minds hard at work.  It was fun, exciting, and joyful.  Time to recreate those mysteries.

Failure has such a bad wrap because we tend to think of it as an end result. We spend our whole lives not trying anything new hoping to avoid this feeling of disappointment. But if you see every failure is an opportunity to grow and get better your end result will always be success. . .
