Warhammer 40k fandom, sit the fuck down, we're having a talk
And by that I mean you're going to fucking listen while I explain something to you. I tend to ramble to get to my points, but you're going to shut the fuck up and listen because you need to hear this.
I am forty-fucking-six years old.
I have been in the gaming scene since D&D classic was still being published. I have Magic the Gathering cards from the second printing of the first-ever set. I was around for the Satanic Panic of the 80s. My first exposure to WH4k was back in the late 1980s, and here is my entire understanding of the game from the people who tried to explain it to me when I was still a gaming newbie:
There's hypermasculine space marines wearing mobile tanks that emphasize the hyperness of their masculinity even more who literally only think of two things; their ultra-honking-super-masculine God Emperor who they actively kill people to keep alive and fighting anything that isn't a hypermasculine space marine. There's space orcs that aren't really orcs but think they're orcs so they're orcs. (Are they orcs or aren't they? Fuck if I know!) There's magic but it's not magic but it's magic but it's not called magic and you can have your squad use magic but don't call it magic or the inquisitors (who are like thin, mean space marine Internal Affairs weasels) will call you a heretic and it's game over and the space orcs who aren't orcs have won.
Tell me this, numbnuts; how is this supposed to make a teenage transgirl even remotely interested in this game?
Are there any characters in the game? Anyone even have a name that would get me invested in the survival of the pile of expensive metal (they were metal at the time) toys I've got on this expensive vinyl mat? Does anything I do as a player make any difference whatsoever in the bigger picture of the game universe?
The answer to all these was 'no.'
And it just so happened, that was my answer to the question of, "Do you want to play Warhammer with us?" Hillarious, right?
Over the years, I'd encounter Warhammer again and again, from spotting resource books to figurines to models to video games, and in every...single...FUCKING instance; hypermasculine space marines fighting parodies of orcs.
I didn't find out there were demons in Warhammer 40k for almost two decades from my original exposure to the game.
I got into D&D and read up on GURPS and watched Battletech strategy combat games and bought universal resource books and picked up novels and even tried my hand at writing for one of the settings I liked.
Over and over and over again, there's Warhammer 40k sitting in the corner, the art featuring hypermasculine space marines all fighting orcs or demons. There's the players (all men, btw), pulling out boxes and boxes of little figurines and performing troop movements and every single one of these little figurines was a little, hypermasculine space marine.
When video games got to the point where you could play as a character and not have to use your imagination to do the heavy lifting, Warhammer 40k games started getting made, and the main characters that you played were all hypermasculine space marines.
My repressed, hurting little transwoman inside me just wanted to play as a woman, but no, there were no women space marines, so fuck me, I guess.
Then TSR gets bought by Wizards of the Coast and then Hasbro, and RPGs are renamed TTRPGs to differentiate from VRPGs and MMORPGs and through it all, through every single step and evolution of TTRPGs, table-top strategy games, RTSs, FPSs, and anything that has a hope in hell of rendering a space marine and competing against the behemoth that is Dungeons and Dragons in the table-top space or Doom in the video game space, there's Warhammer 40k, being all hypermasculine and space-marine-y.
And the fans of the franchise, you motherfuckers? You kept crowing about how in the game the men are men and the women are men and the children are men and how every man is a hypermasculine space marine, and I'm by this point just begging you to please STOP because I'm so fucking sick of hearing about your homoerotic fixation on your goddamn hypermasculine, hyperfascist, hyper-dogmatic, hyper-religious, hyper-space hypermarines!
I get it! There's no such thing as a goddamn woman...
...oh, there is? S/he's a chaos god/dess that's all genders and has entire armies of women who specifically are corrupted demons who exist entirely to seduce and corrupt your hypermasculine space marines?
For the sake of the God-Emperor that you're busy fellating, HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE HOW THAT'S WORSE!?!?
A few months ago my girlfriend comes to me and says that a friend got her a kit so she could get started in Warhammer 40k. After a brief mourning period for our bank account and an existential crisis over what this could mean for our relationship if she goes down the rabbit hole chasing after hypermasculine space marine ideals, she starts to get excited and tells me she's getting a unit of battle sisters.
"Come again?!" I interrupted.
She repeats that she's getting a unit of battle sisters called the Sororitas.
Well, of course, I took some French in middle school, which is based on Latin, and the root word for the name of the unit was "sor-" which is the prefix for "sister," so yes, this was a unit of women.
In Warhammer 40k.
I actually had to dig up the official Games Workshop site to be sure she wasn't being dragged into some knockoff thing that wasn't actually Warhammer. It took me a good solid two weeks and the actual box of miniature model kits to be in my hand before I could believe that Warhammer had women in it.
And then my girlfriend starts telling me all sorts of lore, mostly because I just genuinely can't believe that this is anything real. Everyone knows that Warhammer is about hypermasculine space marines...right?!
So, okay, the Sororitas are a thing, and I'm still convinced that it's just a few models, a token effort. Have a few females, as a treat.
And then she (my girlfriend) starts telling me about how there's named characters in the Sororitas, that they're a pretty darn big deal and a major part of the war effort, and there's even some transwomen in the Sororitas.
"Bullshit!" I say.
Then I go looking it up, not because I don't trust her, but because by this point I feel like I've stepped into an alternate universe. Everyone knows women Are Not A Thing in Warhammer 40k and it's about Manly Men Being Manly! This is not a space where a transwoman can feel represented and welcome!
...right?
So we start getting more models and she's getting pretty good at putting them together and now we need paint. So we look at the Games Workshop official paints and the prices are actually decent so I order some and look at that, there's a Games Workshop store about 20 minutes away. I'll have the order shipped to them and go pick it up. Turns out it's gotta be two orders, that's fine, the first comes Thursday and the second comes Saturday. I have to pick up the Thursday order by myself, but my girlfriend is going to join me for the second pickup.
I get there, prepared to deal with unwashed dudebros who are wearing MAGA hats and enacting their imperialist fascist fantasies through the medium of Warhammer. I'm expecting to be, at best, harassed, and at worst...well, I didn't want to think about what could happen to a transwoman in Arizona in the middle of Trans Panic season.
The store is clean. And well organized. Not a MAGA hat in sight and there's even a hand sanitizer dispenser right at the front door, and the guy running the shop hurries up to me to find out what I need. I tell him I've got an order waiting and he hurries over to get it and hands it over. Done and done.
No harassment, no catcalls, and no trouble getting my order at all.
A few days later, I'm back at the location, feeling much better about going in, and while we're there I ask if we can see their paints as one of the ones we wanted was out of stock online. The guy who's running the store is the same as the one before. Turns out he's the owner, he makes small talk, keeps my daughter entertained, answers questions like a boss, and most importantly, correctly genders me without me even asking once.
By this point, I'm now convinced that even if the game turns out to be expensive shit, there's at least enough rep for women I could maybe try building a model or three and playing a combat game with my girlfriend.
But it'd have to be either Sla'aneshii or hypermasculine space marines.
But I want to participate in my girlfriend's interests.
But I'll have to pick a horrible, misogynistic parody of non-cis, non-het stereotypes melded with chaos magic and demons OR horrible, misogynistic parodies of cis, het, masculinity.
But I want to play a game with my girlfriend, a game that she's starting to enjoy.
Seemingly unrelated, I'm chatting today on Discord with a friend who, like me, appreciates extremely cut women with abs you could grate cheese on. They send me a pic showing a guy in green armor that I think looks a bit like Doomguy but it's not quite a 1:1 fit being topped by a very ripped woman with purple skin and...those tattoos look familiar.
I load the pic up into image search and oh, hey, there's the original on the guy's Twitter feed! I start scrolling and the more I see of this chick the more I'm convinced I've seen some of the symbols before. I start to think...is this chick in Warhammer? That's where I thought I'd seen the symbols, when I was reviewing some of the materials my girlfriend bought. And sure enough, there in front of me was a confirmation that this was an OC based on an actual faction in Warhammer that features women that weren't the Sororitas.
I didn't quite realize it at the moment, but this hit me really hard and it took me some time to figure out why. More on that in a minute.
Up to this point, right up to the very moment I confirmed this random dark elf OC was a WH40k character, I had it so firmly in my head that there was no actual representation of women among the overall lore of Warhammer, save for the Sororitas, which I was still convinced was just a token presence.
I mentioned to my girlfriend that I'd never seen Warhammer 'sexy' art, whether risque or straight-up porn, before that moment, and she said, "Yes you have, I've shown it to you."
I realized in that moment that the entire concept of Warhammer had been presented to me as "Man, man, man, man, man, man, man" so thoroughly, so completely, so many, many times over the course of LITERAL DECADES (probably 30 years, come to think, I believe I first encountered it when I was 16) that I'd been shown literal porn of Warhammer characters and, because they were women, I had no foundation to make the connection between the characters and Warhammer.
I have a point, and if you haven't figured it out yet, I'll make it absolutely, painfully, obnoxiously clear to you.
SHUT UP ABOUT THE FUCKING SPACE MARINES!!! THE GOD EMPEROR WOULD TEAR THE IMPERIUM OF MAN APART, BURN THE INQUISITION TO THE GROUND, AND SEND THE SPACE MARINES TO THEIR ROOM TO THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY'D DONE!!! YOU HAVE FUCKING HAMMERED YOUR MANLY MEN IN MANLY POWER ARMOR INTO THE DIRT SO HARD THAT NOBODY EVEN KNOWS THAT ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT WARHAMMER EXISTS!
Your space marines suck anyway. The Doom Slayer and Master Chief would bully them for their lunch money and Samas Aran and Bayonetta would FemmeDomme them so hard they'd have to clean their power armor's crotch with an industrial cleaner.
Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP about those fucking loser walking tanks who are nothing but canon fodder for their higher-ups. There are entire alien races that nobody outside your little twink-seeking-bear fanboy clique even knows about because you WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT THE SPACE MARINES!
Just stop. Stop talking about them right now. They won't sleep with you, they won't take you to space-prom, they're so hung up on their spiritual hardons for their god emperor that they wouldn't notice you if they tripped on you.

yes pls post all the tips and tricks for adhd + depression management. literally all of them. pls.
oh shit, ok, let me try
pick and choose depending on your space and your budget, obvs. I have a big room now, thankfully, but these organizing tips are still useful even if you donât, I think.
(itâs long and Iâm full of thoughts so buckle up)
1) Empty space is space youâre gonna fill. Bad clutter is gonna get in all of those empty places. Donât have too many empty spaces! You want shelves, tables, and drawers.
Chairs, though, are just higher places to pile things that donât have a designated Spot. (obviously you can have chairs but if you donât need them donât keep them around to fill space). If you have a chair/couch/ect. that you donât use very often, keep a box or a basket underneath it if possible, and plop that thing down on the seat if you feel it in your bones that youâre gonna start piling shit onto that thing soon. Because then that spot is Occupied (sometimes that wonât stop you, but sometimes it will!)
IKEA stuff is the shit. Furinno shelves are surprisingly cute and sturdy. Try to check for furniture sales whenever youâre bored - bonus points for bookmarking certain websites and keeping them in a folder in your bookmarks. The Honey browser extension is also nice for keeping an eye on sales!
2) For the love of everything I know itâs So Hard and itâs daunting, but keep things separate. THAT goes on THIS shelf and THIS shelf ONLY! Youâre going to put things in the wrong spot. Obviously. But youâll know when you do, and thatâs what is important! That way, when your brain decides to work, you can look at a shelf and go âhey that doesnât belong there!â and then you can put it back. I know I get clutter blinders if the boundaries arenât clear.
Small storage - Boxes are for things you donât use very often, because they have a lid and a lid is a very dangerous extra step. Baskets? those are for things you need more often. Try to get a bunch of different kinds or colors so you can start associating those containers with the items they contain. Drawers are all the same. A drawer with PINK drawer dividers instead of BLUE ones? Well, thatâs the drawer with the pens!
Put decorations near your designated boxes, baskets, ect. Itâs an extra marker of recognition when the blue box next to the dragon figurine holds all the tape. Youâll want to leave the tape on the table. Youâll want to. But it belongs in the dragonâs hoard and thatâs really where you should put it.
You need to work with your own brain. Your sense of theming and pairing is the most important thing. I have my extra phone charger in the same basket as my dogsâ spare collars. This is something only I can fathom, and even if I cannot put it into words or justify it, I know where both of those things are and where they belong. FUCK logic.
Cubby shelves are literally so nice and are worth the investment if you can, imo. Theyâre rigid, yet flexible. Itâs a designated divider that you can customize. Some of my cubbies have full, color-coded baskets. Some of them have smaller boxes with their decorations.
If you have bookshelves, dedicate the bottom shelf for storage. Itâs hard to see stuff on the bottom shelf, and that shelf gets real dusty real quick, so just put boxes there.
3) Have. Extra. Trash cans. Taking the trash out is Difficult. Having extra trash cans might make it seem like youâll be taking out more trash but you can stagger it differently and not overwhelm yourself or your single trash can. On a good day you can take all the trash bags out. On a bad day you donât have to take any out, and none of them will be overflowing! I personally have 5 trash cans.
I have a small one near my bed for regular trash, and a big one near my bed for bottles. Yeah, we have a bin for bottles in the garage, but the odds of me walking down there, let alone walking down there and remembering to take the bottle, are slim to none. Special bin, in my room. Yeah, I could put that bin somewhere else, but if I can reach it from my bed, itâs Ultra Convenient because thatâs when Iâm at my most relaxed/lazy/demotivated and also when Iâm most likely to be enjoying my soda
I have a big one near my desk, for desk-related trash, and a small one near my printer for miscellaneous stuff.
My last big one is my favorite. That one is for the big trash. The crap that fill your trash can up almost immediately? Put that in a Special trash can tucked away somewhere. Itâll fill up quickly, but you use it less, and save the space in your regular trash cans.Â
Bonus points if you break down your boxes and tuck them behind that trash can.
4) Have. Multiple. Hampers. Doing laundry sucks and thereâs always SO MUCH. Separating colors from black and white clothes is not viable for me, and maybe it isnât for you. So separate them in a different way!
I have a big clothes hamper, and two hampers in the corners of my closet. One is for towels and stuff. One is for bedding.
bonus tip: idk how some people only have one set of bedding, because it is impossible for me to imagine a day I would have the kind of consistent energy to strip my bed, wash the shit, and put it back on. Have at least 2 sets of everything. Itâs worth it, seriously.
5) Adhesive hooks! Adhesive shelves! Literally it is so nice to have convenience without anxiety. It is hard to commit to putting a piece of furniture somewhere. Itâs extremely hard to commit to putting wall shelves somewhere. So just fucking slap something to the wall and call it a day! You can create bonus shelves on anything, and are not limited to the ability to drill, hoorah!
They also make adhesive holders that go underneath tables! My paper towels are hanging neatly under my desk instead of being the bane of my existence by taking up valuable table space.
6) It is important to remember that your space is for you, and not just a place that needs to hold your things. It is SO much easier to keep a room looking nice if you think it looks nice at the beginning. I know that sounds obvious, but honestly, itâs not. The default of your room should not be tidy. The default of your room should be, holy shit I love the way this looks! And not in a way that is minimalist and beautiful and photo-worthy. In a way that is meaningful to you.
I donât read physical books that much anymore, but I still have a ton of them because they make me happy! Figurines arenât clutter, they are important items. I have marimos, faux succulents, and faux flowers. Are they useful? No. But they go a long way towards making me smile. Keep the little âclutter-yâ shit that makes you happy! Itâll keep you from making more clutter because you donât want to cover up/take away from the cute stuff.
Vinyl wall decals can go anywhere! Just food for thought! I donât feel bad about keeping my closet doors open anymore because my shitty drawers look lovely with their decals on them
Keeping a color palette is hard but it feels really nice. Even when my room is a mess itâs a mess that matches in a way that I like, and then I donât get caught up in feeling like shit. My room has the color profile of a pre-teen girlâs room. But thatâs what I like, so I donât care if itâs tacky or too bright.
If you start to enjoy your room/your space, youâll start to buy yourselves little âtreat yourselfâ presents that are long-term beneficial! Take that, brain, Iâve schooled you. I can produce short term dopamine by depression-buying that adorable basket, but then I can use that basket forever!
I really hope I was helpful, even though Iâm a ramble-y mess. Iâve really been trying to get my room under control, and all the obnoxious âJUST DO IT!â articles on the subject are so unhelpful to me. Finding little things that help me has made me feel so much better day to day, and genuinely seemed impossible a few years ago.
#the ace whiner#organizing tips from a certified mess!#i'll try to add on if i remember more but these are the main ones#grinningprettylikeadevil#sorry if this is impossible to read#walls of text make my head swim too#but i also talk a fucking lot and have no way to control this lol

Dragon Dancer Chapter 12: Catch - 22
Minutes after fleeing the opera house in the middle of a Chicago winter in nothing but my tutu, my extremities grew painfully numb. I had no money for a cab or bus fare and begging would be a bad idea for a lone young girl.Â
The dragon, my father, said if I just closed my eyes and thought of a place, I could go there. Getting back to my family's house or to Cassell was an impossible distance. Even if I could find my way there, who knew what could happen if I accidentally ran into myself from the past.
Previous Chapter
Go Back to the Beginning
There was a broken latch on the basement window in the laundry room. If I could get there, I could get in my house. I closed my eyes and focused my mind, imagining the alleyway next to my house. The image took shape, as clear as if my eyes were open. I took a step forward, reaching out with one hand. Immediately, the world went silent and dark, colder than the winter night air. When I opened my eyes again, I was in the alleyway. My ears filled with the sounds of the street.
I had moved miles in a single step. I was exactly where I wanted to be. My father was true to his word.Â
I knelt down and checked the latch on the basement window. It was still broken.
It was dark in there, but Ielia emerged from the dragonâs scale, her luminous form lit the way for me as I squeezed inside, stood precariously on the wobbly washing machine and then jumped off to the floor. There were no voices, no footsteps above me. Everyone had gone to the opera house to watch me dance. I climbed the creaky wooden stairs and into the kitchen.
When I switched the light on to the old kitchen I saw its curling vinyl, chipped countertops and dated finish. I took a deep breath against my wave of emotions and memories, deliberately passing the refrigerator with its gallery of childrenâs drawings and photos without looking at it. The night before this I didnât eat Momâs cooking. I looked up into the sky and wished to be anywhere but the frigid seat of Robbieâs car.
I hated how much I had wanted to leave here, how I couldnât wait to pack. How I watched all their promotional videos and read up on Cassell College and grew more excited by the promise of posh surroundings and decadent amenities. I wiped my eyes, my quiet whimpering audible over the rattling of a rickety furnace. âIâm an idiot.â
Now all I wanted was this simple life, surrounded by love and family.Â
I entered my room and turned on the light. What supplies could I take with me?Â
There were a lot of clothes that I didnât wear any more that were boxed up as hand me downs for future kids. I opened the closet and carefully opened the boxes. I hurried through the clothes, picking out three days worth, closed them back up, replacing the tape. I found an old wrinkled pinked vinyl backpack to haul my things in. I changed out of my tutu. âI have two of these nowâŚâ I said to myself, staring at it. I would get rid of this one in the garbage outside.Â
Next, I would need some money to get around and maybe find a place to stay.
I raced to Mom and Robbieâs room. I felt a bit bad about doing this, but I also knew that more money was coming after I left for Cassell and we would have plenty. Lifting the mattress, I undid the button on a small seam in the mattress and reached inside feeling for the cash kept there. I decided on only taking a few hundred dollars. Hopefully, if everything worked in my favor, that would be all I needed.
Back to the kitchen I went, stuffing a half dozen granola bars in my jacket.
I tried to imagine going back to Cassell now, explaining to Anjou everything that happened. Would they even let someone with as insane a story as mine through the front gate? They didnât know me yet. It would be a week before they picked me up in a limo. I chewed on one of the granola bars, reluctant to go back into the cold if I didnât have to. I glanced at the clock.
I could comfortably have maybe fifteen minutes left.
I wasnât sure how much I could affect my past life events, having apparently gone back in time. People already saw two of me onstage. Anjou would probably know what that meant, more than anyone else. Besides the dragon scale necklace, that may have been what prompted him to approach me in the first place.
No wonder my dance teacher freaked out. Maybe she thought I had pulled some sort of prank.
I typed in the URL for Cassell College and clicked on Contact Us. There was a 250 character limit. My hands hovered over the keyboard. My mind went over what I knew was going to happen.
Isaac⌠if I never met him. Would he survive? Could I somehow prevent his death from happening? Prevent all those other people from dying? Maybe if they hadnât seen me kill him they would have never sent me to Japan. They may have even sent me home.
Urgent: I was recruited by you but my talent is unstable. Two days after my recruitment, a student named Isaac will take me to a place to see my abilities. But he doesn't survive. When we come back from it, he turns into a servitor and I kill him. Th-
Out of characters.Â
My stomach twists. What if it's not enough? What if he got this message and it was not enough.
âI have to do something different. If Anjou sees this, sends Nono and Caesar and that still fails...â I looked at my ethereal twin. She was pointing to the clock with growing urgency. âIs there nothing I can do?â
She looked at me with an exaggerated helpless shrug. I was out of time. I decided to take a shot in the dark without fearing the consequences. I hit send.
âOkay⌠Now plan B.â
Next was the website for Comemnus Corp. I clicked the contact us page and started to try to explain that Isaac was going to die at Cassell. As I typed, it dawned on me that this might sound like a threat. I remembered his bodyguards that followed him everywhere. Did he come with bodyguards because of my message?Â
âI could be setting up all of this.â I deleted the message. If Isaac had to die, the least I could do was keep his bodyguards from being there. I retyped it, saying that Isaac would die, adding that Isaac should not come with the bodyguards because they would die too.
Even if it didnât work, I tried. I warned them.
âWhat else?â I rested my chin in my hands.Â
It occured to me that if Isaac didnât die and I was not sent out to look for a cure, maybe Caesar, Lu and Johann would fail their mission. Maybe Japan would be overrun by monsters. Maybe they would die in the cave because he would send someone else and things would go wrong. Maybe he would send Nono instead of me. Maybe Nono would die.
If the past could be changed, there was no guarantee that I would change things for the better. I sat staring at the clock, remembering Anjouâs kind eyes and words about courage and hope. I still had some time. I was tired, but I knew that once I walked out of this place I wouldnât be able to come back.Â
I took my last few minutes, gazing at photos of us all together, my foster family. âIâm sorry everyone. I was happy here. I know you always told me to dream big.â I stared at myself as a little toddler, still smiling, still in her leotard. My voice with emotion. âMaybe not this big.â
That little girl in the photo had one living relative: an enormous glittering beast with the power to erase people from existing at will. He was watching me now. I didnât have any real feelings for my birth family. The people in this photo were my family. I didnât want anything to happen to them. One wrong move and everyone I loved could be gone in an instant.
My computer sang out a notification from my inbox. The message title was simple.
âStop Immediately. Stay where you are.â
It was from EVA at Cassell. But I couldnât stay where I was. The sound of car tires screeching to a halt next to the building spooked me. I deleted the email, grabbed my backpack, and made my way to the basement as doors shut and footsteps and voices were heard outside.
As I climbed out of the window, strong gloved hands reached out and grabbed me by both of my arms, yanking me out the rest of the way. A bag was forced over my head, my pack was yanked from my hand and I was half dragged and half carried down the alley.. âHelp!â I cried as someone picked me up and shoved me into a car.
Something cold and hard is pressed against my temple, forcing me into silence. The car peeled away.
âWeâve got the target. Returning to HQ.â
I sat shaking, my breath moving the fabric of the bag in and out. The gun stayed pressed to my head the whole ride. I closed my eyes and tried to focus on a vision to get me out of here, but the car careened around corners and I was without a seatbelt...Â
The car slammed on the brakes, the door opened and I was hauled out, hitting my ankle against the curb, crying out at the pain shooting up my leg. I was dragged from the cold outside to the warmer inside where I was put into a chair, the bag removed from my head. A heavy metal door screeched, closing with a deafening slam. It was dark other than the light from a flashlight shined in my face.
A man and a woman stood in front of me, prim and proper in suits, a table between them that held small silver utensils I assumed to be torture devices. My two kidnappers were at my side. We were in some sort of garage or warehouse, a dimly lit space with metal walls.
âYouâre going to tell us everything we ask you to.â The one speaking is a burly man with a pale, clean shaven head. He fixed his steely eyes onto mine and I nodded in deference.
âI knowâŚâ I said. âYouâre from Comemnus Corp⌠right? Itâs okay. Iâm just trying to warn you.â
âYou sent us a rather curious message. Whoâs after the heir?â He asked.
âNo oneâs after him. He dies because⌠he loses control of his powers. He turns into a Servitor. I know because...â I took a breath because I knew how insane this would sound. âI know because Iâm from the future.â I flinched, expecting a negative reaction.
There was a moment of silence while they took in my words. âIs she out of her mind?â asked the kidnapper to my left.
The woman, in light blue pantsuit and heavy eyeliner rubbed her chin. âHere we have aâŚâ Her eyes looked me up and down. âPoor Chicago kid that we were instructed on an urgent high priority basis to kidnap and interrogate. A kid that knows about Isaac and his entry into Cassell and claims he will die within days along with his escort. This is already strange.â
She brought up the message I had sent to the company on her own phone. âIn a few days time, Isaac will die after becoming a servitor. Try to keep him home. Donât send bodyguards with them. They will die too.â She looked at me. âStrange for the bodyguards to die. Who kills them?â.
I tried to answer carefully. âIsaac becomes a servitor.â Who knew what would happen now that Iâd fiddled with the events in the timeline. Maybe Isaac still dies but I wouldnât be the one to kill him.Â
âWhy?â Her eyes narrowed.
âBecauseâŚâ I hesitated to answer, my mouth drying up, my voice squeaking. âIâŚâ
âYou have one chance to answer this honestly, my dear. My dinner is getting cold.â She picked up one of the silver instruments, it looked like a pen with two hooked prongs at one end. She turned the end until it lit green and let out a high pitched whine.
âOkay. The truth is, Iâm going to meet him there. At the party for new students. He comes on to me pretty hard so I leave. The next day he takes me to some secret place to train.â
Her eyes snapped to mine and widened. âStop talking.â She turned to my kidnappers. âStand outside the door. The rest of this interrogation is classified.â
The kidnappers' footsteps receded. A door shut.
âHe takes you to a secret place.â She repeated, once the others were gone.
I nodded. âYes. He ⌠teleports me there, through some sort of magical gate.â
She looked at me a little longer before leaning over to the bald man and whispering in his ear. He nodded, then marched to a far corner of the warehouse and reached into his pocket for his phone. The woman continued to stare at me, arms crossed, glaring. I looked between the man and her.Â
âAnd what happens? After you go through the gate?â She asked me.
âHe ⌠gives me this black stuff to drink.â I said.
Her narrow-eyed expression deepened.
The man returned. âThe boss wants to talk to her herself.âÂ
She strode up to me and bent over until her face so close I could feel her breath. Her black eyes flashed to yellow. âSpeaking Spirit - Chains.â
Instantly, I was unable to move or speak, paralyzed. The image of those eyes transfixed me and they were all I could see. I could feel myself being picked up from the chair and carried away, while I gasped in a panic.
The world spun and went dark and silent. The next thing I knew, I was lying on my back. Time must have passed but, how much time, I didnât know. I could hear more voices.
A man said, âStudying this genome will take months. Maybe even years. We canât keep her sedated that long. The fact that Weizhen has kept her down with a B ranked talentâŚ? She deserves a raise.â
A womanâs voice, âWhat do you suggest?â
âWe only need the genome for study. With a few stem cells, we can have an endless supply of samplesâŚâ
She interrupted him. â...samples. Really?âÂ
I tried to open my eyes but they remained firmly shut. My fingers stayed relaxed on the bed.Â
âYou had something else in mind?â said the man. âMind you, Cassell is likely looking for her even as we speak. Keeping her here is risky.â
The woman replied. âWe donât deal in relics. It doesnât matter how beautiful her genome is if she canât produce viable offspring.â
He responded. âMy goal as a geneticist is quite different. Someone with her level of dragonblood purity doesnât just come along. Weâve stumbled upon a treasure and an opportunity that will not come again. A substandard sperm donor would be a complete waste of time! It would only corrupt the results of our research. Her genetic purity exceeds even that of the much lauded Johann Chu! Where are we going to find someone else like that? If offspring is what youâre after we could try cloning first. If we find a suitable donor, we can try breeding.â
I tried to move my head, but I was held fast. I cried out for help in my mind.
âWhat about Herzog?â She asked.
âThat fanatic? Youâre welcome to ask, but last we were in contact with him, he was creating monsters.â
âHe has no connection to Cassell...â
Someone else spoke, a woman close to me, just behind my head. âThe girl is struggling!â She gasped.
âQuick, give her another dose of ketamine!âÂ
My body grew hot, my eyes twitched. I gasped. When I raised my hand someone pinned me down. âHurry!â
My eyes flew open. The bright lights of the room made me squint. I could see people, but I couldnât focus.Â
âYouâve done well, Weizhen, but now, weâre going to have to find other means to restrain her. Take the samples now. This may be our last opportunity.â

Your EDM Playlist: Insomniax Relive the Days of Sanctuary, Look Forward to âV7 Saxon Streetâ [Viper]
In a rave career that collectively spans almost 30 years, itâs natural for artists like Freshold and Renzo (the members of Insomniax) to want to look back and reminisce and also to take inspiration from those rave glory days. Thatâs just what Insomniax have done with their two-part EP series, V7 Saxon Street, the first part of which released in late March. The EPâs title is the literal address of legendary club Sanctuary in Milton Keynes north of London, from which the duo clearly take a lot of inspo both for the EP and in their music in general.
In a genre whose focus seems to be relentlessly on pushing forward, creating new vibes and daring the laws of sound design physics to blink, Insomniax are and have been on that leading edge, creating new vibes and keeping said vibes super clean with no small amount of humor, groove and cheek. Theyâve played with every sound imaginable from liquid to dark to techy âFoghornâ vibes. That said, however, the Insomniax âOrigin Storyâ seems to go back to those early days in the 90s and early 00s where the leading edge of jungle and DnB sound was created not in the studio but on the dancefloor.
Itâs easy enough to hear and feel the vibes in the tracks of V7 Saxon Street but to get the true experience and the love the UK rave scene and Inxomniax themselves have for said vibes, Ollie Freshold decided to put together a banger of a playlist: 21 of the tracks he feels were at the core of the Sanctuary vibe and which still inspire the Insomniax sound today. It is a gift, this collection, and Your EDM are proud to pass it on to the ravers of today. Listen and love.
Andy C & Shimon â Recharge â RAMÂ
One of my all time favorite DnB tracks. Itâs so way ahead of its time it still sounds fresh today. Whilst many other jungle/DnB producers were sampling hip hop and reggae etc these guys were fusing jungle with sci-fi samples. Absolute classic!
youtube
Aphrodite â My Style (from the Dark Side)Â
Probably my favorite Aphrodite track. Seriously infectious use of samples and an absolute killer Reece bassline.
youtube
Adam F â Metropolis â Metalheadz
Again another track 20 years ahead of its time. Everyone was rinsing this around this time.
youtube
Alex Reece â Pulp fiction â MetalheadzÂ
A timeless classic and a pivotal moment in drum and bass. I donât know if my vinyl of this ever left my record box.
youtube
Andy C & Shimon â Quest â RAM
Another vinyl that never left my box. To this day this is still one of the most inspirational drum and bass tracks to me. So simple! âSo both sides begin a new quest for peaceâ
youtube
Prisoners of technology â The Trick of technology- Fresh Kutt
If you donât know this tune then get to know. An absolute amen monster ! I Might start dropping this one in the sets again.
youtube
Adam F â Circles- Positiva
Iâm pretty sure a lot of non DnB jungle heads know this one. Huge anthem and an absolutely beautiful piece of music. One for the back row head-nodders.
youtube
Mask â Square Off- Dope Dragon
Back in the day when we didnât have internet we had to search out records. Sometimes you would never find find out what they were. It took me 2 years to find this after hearing it played out and on the tape packs. Well worth the wait.
youtube
Terrorist â Chopper â (Shy fx remix) â Dread
The first time I attended a rave at the sanctuary in 1996 Iâd say 90% of the Djâs on the night started with this. IMO One of the biggest drum and bass records ever.
youtube
DJ Zinc â reach out â True PlayazÂ
Iâve just actually just downloaded the new master of this through DJ Zincs website. Definitely my favourite Zinc track. I recently read that he sampled the bass from a really old Marcus Intalex song from the early 90s.
youtube
DJ Hype feat MC Fats â Peace love & Unity â True Playaz
Itâs a shame Hype stopped producing all those years ago because his tracks were so good. This was an anthem for a good few years back in the sanctuary days.
youtube
Mask â Splurt â Dope Dragon
The Full cycle crew always had the knack for writhing the most simple but catchy records. This is no exception. I fell in love with this the first time I ever heard it which was during Ray Keithâs set at a Helter Skelter event in 1998.
youtube
TNT (trend & target) â 2 Degrees -Kartoonz
RIP Trend. My memories of this track is standing in the queue outside the sanctuary eagerly waiting to get in and hearing this blast out of the doors of the Rollers arena and everyone in the queue bobbing around outside to it. Huge huge anthem back in the day.
youtube
DJ Die â Clear Skies â Full Cycle
A cool fact I learned the other day is that DD Die took inspiration from DJ Zincâs âReach outâ and went on to write this. Definitely in my top 10 all time favorite DnB tracks.
youtube
Andy C & Shimon â Nightflight- RAM
The fact that 23 years later this still absolutely guarantees to murder the place down, proves what a classic it is. Still sounds fresh now and everyone still loves hearing this, and Djâs still love dropping it !
youtube
Renegade â Dark Soldier â Dread
Another huge Jungle/DnB anthem. Longest intro ever though. I remember the MCs calling rewind and us lot shouting âno donât do itâ because the intro was sooo long. This has had countless amounts of remixes over the years but the original is still by far the best version.
youtube
Sappo- Ding Dong Bass- Rinseout
âListen up⌠The ding dong bassâ Nuff said !
youtube
Fire fox â Buck Rogers â Philly Blunt
Back in 96 this is what we used to call Jump up. Rarely would you hear a set back then without this in it. Classic Bristol sound !
youtube
Shy Fx â Bambaata- Ebony
Absolute game changer ! I remember hearing this for the first time also at sanctuary when Nicky Blackmarket dropped it. I was stood next to a crew of fully moschinoâd up Rude-boys who all lost their shit to it.
youtube
MA2 â Hearing is Believing â Formation
This had just had a re-lick from modern day Jungle don Serum. I feel he definitely did it justice but you canât beat this Version.
Shout to DJ SS and formation records. One of the longest standing Djs and Labels in Drum and bass.
youtube
Doc Scott â Shadow Boxing â 31 records
I Got to 20 tracks on this list and then remembered Shadow Boxing and couldnât possibly leave it out. For me itâs the most simple but emotional piece of Drum and bass ever written. I remember first hearing it at Sanctuary and literally everyone playing it that night. If you looked around everyone just had utter screw face ! When I think of dark drum and bass, I think of Shadow Boxing.

Photo
Summary: The Spyro adventure that started it all has been rebuilt from the ground up by the studio that brought the world Skylanders. What could possibly go wrong?
Overall: The answer is everything. I cannot recommend this remaster at all. Outside the updated camera controls, every update somehow actively makes this game worse in some way. Just play the original release.
Controls: You can finally control the camera with the right stick. An option exists to let L1 and R1 rotate it as well, but that moves the useless directional rolls to L2 and R2 which means the odd ability to use flame breath with R2 is removed. I always thought itâd make more sense to have the charge on a trigger, but thatâs not an option here.
Otherwise the game controls the same, just a lot worse. The jumps are oddly floaty in a way that makes it hard to get a decent glide in. Iâve missed a lot of ledges because my glides just didnât start from the right height. The free flying segments are a nightmare. The movement is incredibly slow which means you have zero room for mistakes. Iâll get back to these when I talk about the graphics, but spending upwards of half an hour on the second one of these is ridiculous considering I breezed through these earlier this year.
Character Designs: I hate them. I know I said I was going to be more positive going forward but hate is the appropriate word. I have a strong and passionate dislike for these redesigns. Spyro is the only one Iâm sort of okay with. Iâd rather it be one to one with the character art from the boxes of the original games, but I donât dislike it. Itâs just passable.
Sparx looks terrible. His eyes are so far apart that he looks like he has a mental disability. I do not understand why anyone thought this looked good. I could go on endlessly about the dragons, but I will cut things short and simply say that they are all over designed. I like that there are a variety of body types and that they are much more animated in their appearances, but each one is wearing a bunch of gear which is strange when you consider Spyro is the only one who isnât wearing any. Iâm still baffled that they didnât do something about the fact that the game is a total sausage fest. Was anyone really going to be mad that one of the 80 dragons got replaced with a female dragon?
And now for the baddies. Itâs safe to say a lot of the charm was lost while adding polygons. This comes back the the graphics as well, but none of them really pop anymore. The classic shiny texture that indicates an enemy is resistant to fire is gone. This was an easy way to decide how to attack a foe, but itâs gone because repetitive textures donât look pretty. Imagine if Portal had changed up the texture of walls you can place portals on so that it was never consistent. This failure to account for the thought process behind these sorts of things just keeps coming up again and again in this remaster. As for the new designs themselves they are sort of faithful. Certain foes like the Magic Crafters and the basic Gnorcs have a lot of issues. The additional detail of the Magic Crafters baddies makes them look less cartoony. I always thought they were wearing oversized sweaters up past their mouths. The Gnorcs just donât pop against the rest of the grass in their levels.
I never really cared for Gnasty Gnorc as a villain, but I really donât like the update. Particularly the introduction. The interview opening to the original game I always thought was silly, but it zooming back to show Gnasty watching a TV is strange. Mostly because it raises the question of what does it mean that a TV exists in this universe, especially considering all of the motivational posters around Gnastyâs room. I never questioned the boom microphone in the original games, but when it is all compounded with these additions they somehow broke immersion in a fantasy setting. Thatâs a rather impressive failing.
Graphics: Graphics over gameplay. That was clearly the design philosophy here. Otherwise I canât possibly see how some of this got through. Iâve already mentioned the fire proof texture no longer being a thing, but letâs double back to the flight course.
Iâm going to go on a brief tangent here, but Iâll come back to make my point. People who are really into music prefer to listen on vinyl records. You may think itâs a bit pretentious, but there is a reason. When you listen on a record the record is all you are listening to. It is not edited for radio. On the radio music is all loud all the time. This is because loud things stand out so you listen. The problem is when everything is loud nothing is loud because loud is what is considered normal. On a record there is no competition so music is edited so that it isnât all loud all the time. The music can change volume to put emphasis on something.
So what does this have to do with Spyro? Well when everything is bright, nothing pops. The original game had one shade of green for the grass and a darker green for the Gnorcs. This made the Gnorcs pop against the grass. The same goes for the green gems. They popped. Here they are all about the same color so not only does it all look bland, but Iâve had to double back for gems multiple times because I couldnât see them since they were hidden under the grass or blended into the background. Now you might say âwell what about the glimmer of the gems?â and I did check, and it is there. The problem is that it is tiny and blends into the background. If I wasnât looking for it I wouldnât have seen it. Itâs insanely small in the screen.
So how does this mess with the flight courses? Well the second and third of these are all filled with vibrant colors and crystals that are the same color as the things youâre looking for. Theyâre also occasionally obscured by the models environment itself. Itâs a combination of bad choices and controls that made these flight segments unbearable.
Now I have no idea of these complaints are lessened by having an HDR/4K capable display/console, but that should not matter. If the game design doesnât work across all console skews than youâve failed at game design.
One last addition I must make is a comment on the motion blur used in this game. Itâs excessive. Now I honestly donât know what to look for when itâs in motion to spot it, but when I decided to check out all my screen shots it was clear as day. Over half if my screen shots were a blurry mess. Now while this all looks fine in motion it is very clear that they failed to take into account the ability to capture a screen shot. Itâs no wonder the pause menu isnât s paused screen with a menu overly. Itâd reveal how awful the game looks when not in motion.
Skill Points: This game originally didnât have skill points. These new ones are hit and miss. There are quite a few donât get hit ones and a lot of random tasks, but that seems pretty on par with the other games.
Trophies:
This shouldnât have been hard. Trophies for the newly added skill points, some for the harder to reach dragons, and some for various completion criteria. Instead they suck. You can double back to most of these, but most of these can easily be missed. Things like flaming the arrow fairies in the speedway or taking out a certain enemy class a certain way in a certain level are oddly specific. Itâs just really poor design. Itâs not hard, but it is certainly obtuse. If you donât go in knowing what tasks are required to obtain the trophies, a 110% completion run could end with an incredibly small amount of trophies.

Chapter 1: Peter
âI slapped the alarm as I rolled over. It was too damn early. Way too damn early to be waking up on a weekend. It was a good thing classes were already over. I pulled myself out of bed and grabbed the first clean shirt I could find. It ended up being a faded tank I hadnât worn since spring break. I plodded around half-asleep, half-naked, and all-irritated. I trudged into the bathroom to splash some cold water on my face. That helped. I squinted into the mirror, the image of my face a little fuzzy without my glasses. I needed to shave. Oh well. I walked back into the bedroom and grabbed my glasses off my nightstand. Once I had them on I found a pair of khaki shorts and pulled them on, only to have them slide halfway down my ass by the time I made it into the living room. So I turned around and grabbed a cloth belt off the back of my closet door and cinched it tight as I walked back into the living room.
It was too early for any of my roommates to be up, but I wasnât worried about being quiet. They were all probably too hungover from whatever end-of-the-year parties they had been to the night before. I checked the fridge. It was overflowing with cheap beer and Chinese takeout, easily the most stereotypical college apartment fridge I had ever seen. I grabbed the carton of milk from behind a case of Bud Light and shut the fridge. Then, I grabbed a box of cereal and a bowl and made myself a meager little breakfast. I ate it quickly and went back to my room to double-check my stuff. Most of the clothes I owned were stuffed into a duffel bag on the floor next to the bed. I rifled through it to make sure I had enough for the next week. It was mostly khaki shorts and t-shirts, but I made sure I had two pairs of trunks and plenty of underwear. Never could be too safe.
Once I was sure all my clothes were in order, I unzipped my backpack to make sure everything else I needed was packed inside. My laptop and various chargers were tucked into the back pocket; my shampoo, soap, and deodorant was bagged up in the bottom; my toothbrush and toothpaste were sitting on top of that; my headphones were neatly tucked into there case on top of the toiletries; and my sparkling clean sneakers were holding everything in place on top. All my other shoes were in my duffel bag, but these sneaks were special. They were vintage Chicago Air Jordan 1s, 1985 stock. I wasnât a sneakerhead by any stretch of the imagination, but my dad had given them to me as a kid, and I had taken meticulous care of them since. They were like my good luck charm. I took them with me everywhere I went. I ran my thumb along them before zipping my backpack up and checking the front pouch for everything else. Tylenol, check. Earbuds, check. Aux cord, check. I still had a nagging feeling I was forgetting something. Extra glasses maybe? I opened my nightstand drawer to find them. They were sitting next to an unopened box of condoms. I laughed and tossed both into the bag. As if, I thought. I zipped everything back up and slung my backpack over my shoulder. I grabbed my duffel and headed towards the door before I remembered one last thing. I set my stuff by the door and walked back to my dresser to pick up my record player.
I pulled off the record sitting on the turntable and thumbed through my collection until I found the right sleeve. It was Queenâs Greatest Hits, sides 3 and 4. I slipped the vinyl back into its spot and shut the lid to my player. I unplugged it and rolled the cord up, sticking it into my carrying case along with the player itself. I had room for ten vinyls in the case, so I flipped through my collection and picked out my favorites: Queen, Snarky Puppy, Steve Miller Band, Imagine Dragons, They Might Be Giants, Survivor, Commodores. I tucked them all into the case and closed it tight. I looked around the room for anything else I might need, and, finding nothing, I grabbed my record and headed out the door, grabbing my backpack and duffel on the way out. I checked the clock on the living room wall before I left. It was only 7:30. I told Charlie Iâd be there at 8:00. Iâd have to hurry. But then again, knowing Charlie, it would be 9:00 before we ever left. I turned the lights off behind me as I left, heading downstairs to the parking garage. I decided to go through the courtyard on my way. It was more doors to go through, but even as early as it was, it was a beautiful day. The lights hanging around the courtyard were just turning off as I made my way out. I headed through the lobby and out to the parking garage, weaving my way through until I made it to my car.
Baby was my dream car, a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle, baby blue with original chrome trim. My grandpa had bought off an air force base before my dad was born, but he stopped driving it in the 90s, mainly because he could never drive a stick very well. Once I got a job in high school, half my paychecks went into new parts for the old girl, and by senior year I had her running beautifully. Iâd driven her ever since, fixing her up more and more whenever I could. She was now sporting whitewall tires, a completely rebuilt engine with twice the horsepower of the original, a new paintjob, and custom upholstery. I couldnât remember when Iâd started calling her baby. It was probably around the time I finally started driving her. I was the stereotypical new car owner and referred to her as my baby, and the name kinda stuck. My friends had all made fun of me at first for driving such a âdorkyâ car, but once they took a ride in it, they all fell in love with it just like I did. I joked that if my engineering degree ever fell through I could always fall back on mechanics. As many hours as Iâd spent fixing up Baby, it really wasnât too far from the truth.
I took a deep, heavy breath as I turned the engine over, struggling to keep my eyes open as I pulled out onto the road. I made the executive decision to be late to Charlieâs for the sake of coffee. And booze. After seeing the pathetic selection in my fridge, I decided to take those matters into my own hands. I pulled into Grit Coffee Bar, a popular streetside cafĂŠ I frequented throughout the week to fuel my unhealthy reliance on espresso. Parking was no problem, being as early as it was on a Sunday morning. I managed to get a spot in the right in front of the coffeeshop. It was 7:45 when I pulled in, and I remembered that they didnât open until 8:00 on Sundays. I killed the engine and pulled out my phone to text Charlie.
ME: Hey, gonna be late. Needed coffee and booze.
I waited for a reply, but it didnât come for a while. I plugged in my earbuds and opened Spotify, not looking for anything in particular. I was halfway through âLazarettoâ by Jack White when my phone pinged with Charlieâs response.
CHARLIE: Ah shit I just woke up.
ME: Why am I not surprised?
CHARLIE: Oh get off my case.
CHARLIE: Youâre the one buying booze at 8 AM.
ME: Well itâs either I buy it now or you get stuck with Bud Light for a week.
CHARLIE: Oh, nvm good call man.
I checked the time again. It was 8:05. The doors were just opening. I locked the car behind me and headed in to grab a coffee to kickstart the long day of driving ahead of me. Gus, a good friend of mine, was working the morning shift today.
âShouldâve known youâd be in here this early,â he joked. âYouâve gotta be the only guy on campus crazy enough to be up right now.â
âThanks, Gus,â I feigned sarcasm, slapping a five on the counter. He didnât even have to ask what I wanted. I came in so often that almost every employee knew I always got a medium caramel latte with two shots espresso and whipped cream. Gus was already grinding the beans as I walked up to the counter.
âIâm serious, you know,â he said, pouring the coffee into the cup. âI didnât pass a single car on my way to work today. Why are you even up so early? All your roommates were at the big party at Trinity last night.â
âIâm going on a big road trip,â I said, grabbing my coffee and change off the counter.
âReally now?â Gus asked as he turned to clean out the espresso machine.
âYup. Iâm taking Charlie to Gulf Shores for Hangout.â
âOh, youâre kidding! Iâm so jealous, dude. Thatâs gonna be awesome.â
âYeah, I really hope so. Weâre gonna try to make it to Atlanta tonight.â
âWell, have fun. But be safe! Canât have our number one customer up and leaving us.â Gus grinned and waved as I walked out, coffee in hand. I took a deep breath as I got in the car and cranked it up. This was without a doubt the craziest thing I had ever done. I shook off my nerves and broke into a grin as I pulled out of the parking lot. I turned on the radio just as my lucky song came on. Elton John was singing âRocket Manâ on the FM, and I couldnât help but join him as my adventure started.

V7 Saxon Street Part 1Â is out now and available on Beatport to purchase or Spotify to stream. Stay tuned for part 2, out shortly.
