Liverpool uncovered: Simon Mignolet on losing his place to the best keeper he’s ever seen
Liverpool suffered a heartbreak in Barcelona on Wednesday night, but their quest to win the Premier League is still alive. It has been a remarkable campaign and with 91 points on the board, they will chase Manchester City all the way to the line.
Ahead of Saturday's crucial trip to Newcastle, long-serving goalkeeper Simon Mignolet told Sportsmail the story of the season from the players' perspective.
The Belgian has been on the journey every step of the way, seeing the highs and lows, and knows Liverpool can still dream.
Simon Mignolet has an important presence in the field for Liverpool this campaign
The Belgian believes the group at Anfield have what it takes to be champions one day
DREAMING BIG
After reaching the Champions League final last May, Liverpool made four big summer signings and enjoyed a fruitful start to the season. The key moment for the squad, though, was the night Paris Saint-Germain came to town in September and were tasks apart.
SIMON MIGNOLET: It all started so well. We had four victories before the first international break. When we came back we had Tottenham at Wembley and PSG at home in the Champions League, two of the best teams in the world in quick succession.
We beat Spurs 2-1, then scored three against PSG and blew them away. If we could play like that against Edinson Cavani, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, why couldn't we do it to everyone else? We knew, there and then, we didn't need to be afraid of anyone.
We had a good run in the previous season but we knew people would wonder if we could sustain it. So that game was the benchmark. That's where it all started.
Mignolet spoke exclusively to Sportsmail's Dominic King about Liverpool's season so far
SQUAD UNITY
Jurgen Klopp has stressed how well run Liverpool's dressing cream is. Mignolet's role may have changed over the last 12 months but he is an important member behind the scenes and the inclusive atmosphere has been crucial to maintaining form.
SM: I've never been in a dressing room where there is no trouble at some stage.
There's always going to be something where someone doesn't talk to someone else or they don't get on.
Alongside his prolific goalscoring, Sadio Mane also tries to make his team-mates laugh
But that's not the case with this squad. It's been that way for a year. Nobody is talking behind anyone's back, nobody has a grudge.
Sadio Mane always tries to be the joker but his jokes aren't always funny – people ended up laughing with him, rather than at the joke he made!
There's a lot of banter going on … Robbo (Andy Robertson), Milly (James Milner), Virg (Virgil van Dijk) – it comes from all sides.
Mignolet also identified James Milner (left) and Andrew Robertson as two of the biggest jokers
WORRYING TIMES
It's easy to look at Liverpool's results and think progress has been smooth, but that's not the case. Autumn brought some below-standard league performances and poor results in the Champions League. A 2-0 defeat at Red Star Belgrade was a line in the sand.
SM: October and November was a rough patch. We lost to Napoli away, drew with Manchester City at home, drew at Arsenal and then lost to Belgrade. Everything that could have gone wrong that night did go wrong.
The main thing that came out of it was doubt. The manager was so unhappy. We stayed over in Belgrade and the big question we asked was: "Why are we doing this?" It turned out to be a game we learned more from. We had to make sure it didn't happen in the Premier League.
A shock defeat at Red Star Belgrade proved to be a significant turning point
DEFINING DAYS
Lift-off for Liverpool came on December 2, when they dramatically beat Everton 1-0 in the Merseyside derby with an injury-time goal from Divock Origi. The victories that resonated most, however, will come as a surprise.
SM: I don't show my feelings a lot but when Divock scored I jumped off the bench! I was sat next to Adam Lallana and James Milner and the noise at the stage was incredible. That win was huge.
But I will pick another three out: Brighton away in January. We had two lost games against Manchester City and Wolves, and the match was dead, no chances for either team. Then Mo (Salah) scored a penalty. A week later, we beat Crystal Palace 4-3. A crazy game but so, so important. Those six points were massive. One slip and it makes a hell of a difference. Then recently we had Cardiff.
Like Belgrade, everything was set up there for us to fail. A dry pitch, 30-degree heat. What we did that day to win 2-0 made it one of our best performances.
Mignolet identified Divock Origi's late Merseyside derby winner as a 'huge' moment
MAGICAL MO
Salah has enjoyed another outstanding season and could well retain the Golden Boot. If he does, Mignolet will have his bit to help done.
SM: He sits next to me on the coach when we travel to games. He asks me about penalties and what ideas the opposition goalkeeper will have. I'll tell him he should do this or that. We practice penalties the day before a game and we work together.
I try to do the same as the keeper he will face the next day, to make it as realistic as possible.
The big thing about Mo? He is a cult hero in Egypt. People forget how big a figure he is in the Muslim world.
Mohamed Salah could win the Golden Boat again after another outstanding scoring season
We went to Dubai in January for a training camp and he was everywhere. He's like a statue.
He carries all that on his shoulders and he does it so well, like the pressure is nothing. He's down to earth, still the same guy as he was when he signed. Everywhere we go there is attention for him.
When there are crowds around the coach shouting 'Salah! Salah! " we join in with them and make it funny.
But he has an example to give. He has got so much talent but he works so hard to help.
Mignolet praised the way the Egyptian forward handles all of the pressure of his status
PERSONAL ANGUISH
Mignolet has not played in the Premier League this season. The £ 65million signing of Alisson Becker made him No 2 but he has blocked out any personal disappointment. His attitude is so good that both Klopp and Milner have highlighted his role.
SM: Me and my missus are building a house in Spain. I speak a few languages and last year we decided to take Spanish lessons. Then Ali came and I don't need lessons any more if I speak Spanish with him!
As a goalkeeper, you learn from the guys you work with. He is Brazil No 1 ahead of Ederson. The main difference between the two is that Ali is probably better with his hands. He's the most complete goalkeeper I've seen in my career. He is so calm.
Not playing is the hard bit, the feeling of being on the pitch at the end when you've won is what I miss most. I understand how people who don't play stop doing their work. That's why I push myself every day. I get in the gym at 9am. The boys must look at me and think, "What's that idiot doing there again?"
Alisson is established as Liverpool's first-choice stopper and Mignolet called him 'complete'
THE FINAL ACT
Mignolet was part of the last Reds squad who challenged for the title, in 2014. Whatever happens in the next week, he believes this group has what it takes to be champions one day.
SM: The manager is perfect for the club. His vision and his character embodied what the fans live for. The style of play we have is what the supporters want, they want to see fire. They want to see Liverpool pushing, fighting.
It would be strange – and very frustrating – if we didn't win anything, but the only thing that would stop it is the opposition (Manchester City) being so good . All credit to them if that's the case. The amount of points we've accumulated would mean we are champions in a normal year.
We've been through the process to get where we want to be and the squad have grown. We should get something one day.
Mignolet was a part of Liverpool's 2014 title-challenging side and played in defeat by Chelsea

Athletic Bilbao only use local players / Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty ImagesBeing in charge of Athletic Club comes with the caveat of only signing players from the Basque region - otherwise known as its cantera policy. It is the ultimate home-grown challenge.
Gianluigi Buffon is back with Parma / Nicolò Campo/Getty ImagesParma are the epitome of cool because of the cult teams they had during the 1990s. They've had several financial meltdowns over the years and are yet to properly recover from the most recent six years ago. They have been back to Serie A after starting out in Serie D in 2015, but relegation last season means starting 2021/22 in Serie B.
Malmo are Sweden's representatives in the Champions League / David Lidstrom/Getty ImagesSweden has produced countless outstanding footballers over the decades and their national team is a staple of the knockout rounds at international tournaments. Yet their club sides have fallen behind.Malmo have flown the flag in the Champions League a few times in recent years, including this season, and remain the only Swedish club to have played in the final - but that was nearly 45 years ago.
Famalicao are Portuguese minnows / Quality Sport Images/Getty ImagesWith a stadium holding barely more than 5,000, Famalicao are Portugal's minnows and are arguably punching above their weight just being in the Primeira Liga alongside the likes of Porto, Benfica and Sporting CP.Success in Portugal is a notoriously closed club. Only five teams have ever been crowned champions, with two of those just one-hit wonders. Adding a sixth, especially a tiny club like Famalicao, would be historic.
Restore Independiente's glroy days / Marcelo Endelli/Getty ImagesHaving won it seven times, Independiente are the most successful club in the history of the Copa Libertadores. But the last of those titles was back in 1984 and the modern hype is for Boca Juniors and River Plate instead. Why not build a team capable of restoring the glory days? You could even try and persuade Sergio Aguero back - he left for Europe when he was 18 and has said in real life he would like to return.
1860 Munich have disappeared into the shadows / Christof Koepsel/Getty ImagesFounded in 1860, obvious when you think about it, 1860 Munich are one of Europe's most historic football clubs. They've been German champions, won domestic and European trophies, but things haven't been good.1860, now completely overshadowed by city rivals Bayern, haven't been in the Bundesliga since 2004 and were briefly in Germany's fourth tier recently. They're now back in tier three, but can you take then back to the top?
Paris FC split from Paris Saint-Germain in 1972 / DAMIEN MEYER/Getty ImagesUnlike other European capitals like London or Madrid, which have numerous top flight football clubs, Paris has just one: Paris Saint-Germain.But Paris FC exist as a result of a split from PSG in 1972 and have been a longstanding fixture of France's lower leagues. Currently in Ligue 2, they have previously threatened promotion to Ligue 1 and French football needs a top flight Paris derby.
Malaga have fallen on hard times since their 2013 peak / SOPA Images/Getty ImagesRemember when Malaga were in the Champions League quarter-finals and on the verge of reaching the semis? It was only as recently as 2013 but decline since those brief glory years have left them in Spain's second tier. The entire first-team squad was released in 2020 to stave off insolvency. There's rarely a blank canvas like it in football.
Hibernian were Scotland's third best club in 2020/21 / Callum Landells/Getty ImagesThe challenge is simple: break the Old Firm dominance of Scottish football. The reality is probably quite a bit harder but worth a good go.It was 1985 the last time a club other than Rangers or Celtic was crowned champions in Scotland. That was Aberdeen led by a young Alex Ferguson.Hibernian were comfortably third in the Scottish Premiership last season so are probably your best bet.
Sutton United are the newest club in FIFA 22 / Christopher Lee/Getty ImagesSutton are the newest addition to the EFL, so taking them further up the English leader ladder would be an ultimate rags to riches tale. This is the first season they have been included in a FIFA game.
Forest Green are a completely unique club / Pete Norton/Getty ImagesForest Green are a unique side that deserve plenty of attention. They became the world's first vegan club in 2015, before they had even reached the EFL, and have kitted out their stadium with eco-friendly innovations. The New Lawn sadly isn't available in FIFA 22, but the club's jazzy home and away kits are not ones to miss.
Make Rochdale interesting / Nathan Stirk/Getty ImagesMake an extremely unremarkable club...remarkable.Rochdale once spent 26 consecutive seasons in the EFL's bottom division without getting promoted or relegated. They've recently had a spell in League One but are back in League Two for the 2021/22 season.Yet this is still the club that had had big names like Rickie Lambert, Grant Holt and Adam Le Fondre pass through in the past.
Blackburn have been out of the Premier League for too long / Alex Livesey/Getty ImagesBlackburn remain one of only seven clubs that have held the Premier League trophy aloft since the new competition was formed in 1992.Yet Rovers haven't been in the top flight for 10 consecutive seasons following their relegation in 2012 and it's about time they returned.Plus there's Chilean sensation Ben Brereton Diaz to manage.
Generations of Nottingham Forest fans haven't seen their club successful / James Williamson - AMA/Getty ImagesTwo-time European Cup winners Nottingham Forest haven't played top flight football for over 20 years since their 1999 relegation from the Premier League. What's more, a good number of those years have seen them finish in the bottom half of the Championship.Restoring the glory days is first and foremost getting back in to the Premier League. Then it climbing the table, challenging domestically and, perhaps ultimately, reigning Europe once more.
Benfica have been cursed for 60 years / PATRICIA DE MELO MOREIRA/Getty ImagesBreak the curse of Bela Guttmann.Achieving domestic success with the Portuguese giants shouldn't be an issue, but the club hasn't experienced European success since 1962 after supposedly refusing legendary coach Guttmann a pay rise.He is alleged to have 'cursed' the club, vowing that they wouldn't be European champions again for 100 years. Given that they have lost five European Cup finals since then, the 'curse' has stuck.
Ajax are a hugely popular club / BSR Agency/Getty ImagesAjax remain one of the most popular clubs in Europe. Historically, they are also tremendously successful but their last Champions League title was back in 1995, although they came close to the final in 2019.Build your own Ajax golden generation and make Amsterdam the heart of Europe once more.
AC Milan need someone to deliver success / Marco Luzzani/Getty ImagesFor being the second most successful club in Champions League history and the third most successful club in Serie A history, AC Milan are currently nowhere near the status they want to be.A sleeping giant for the past decade, the Rossoneri are underdogs in Europe when they were once feared and it doesn't sit right.
Tottenham have been starved of success / Marc Atkins/Getty ImagesA major trophy of any description has eluded Spurs since 2008. They have played in finals in that time but the drought goes on.In 2021, having missed the trophy boat under previous manager Mauricio Pochettino, there is also a rebuilding project to complete, which will make any future successes all the more sweet.
Arsenal are in the midst of an exciting rebuilding project / Clive Rose/Getty ImagesArsenal fans demand success and it will take a skilled manager to deliver it, successfully rebuilding a squad capable of the ultimate goals. It didn't happen right away, but the Gunners rather unsurprisingly fell apart after Arsene Wenger left the club. The rebuild has started and taking over the Emirates Stadium means inheriting some potential, but the process is going to be long and ongoing to yield real success.Arsenal haven't won the Premier League since 2004, haven't seriously challenge since 2008, and have never won the Champions League. Man Utd news LIVE: Solskjaer sack latest, £300m transfer plan instruction, injury blow | Football | Sport
Manchester United news LIVE updates
Monday, October 7
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under severe pressure after losing 1-0 to Newcastle
Mason Greenwood has suffered a back injury
Lee Sharpe has told Ed Woodward he needs to spend £300m on transfers
Marcus Rashford has apologised to Man Utd supporters
Man Utd will not sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Manchester United will stick by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite the 1-0 loss to Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils are down in 12th in the table and have won just twice in the top flight all season.
Manchester United are unbelievably just two points above the relegation zone after the abject defeat to Newcastle who had been struggling themselves.
Solskjaer’s tally of nine points from the opening eight games sets a new record for the worst at this stage of a Premier League campaign.
It beats David Moyes who amassed 11 points in 2013 and ended up getting sacked after 10 months in charge.
But despite the poor form and results the Glazers have no plans to sack Solskjaer, according to the Daily Star.
The billionaire owners have taken into account the number of players missing from the United squad and willing to stick with him for now.

No Ed Woodward meeting held
Manchester United have denied claims there has been a meeting between Ed Woodward and the club’s hierarchy to discuss the future of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Reports on Monday afternoon claimed there was an “unscheduled meeting” between Woodward and members of the Glazer family.
However, Express Sport has been told that is “completely incorrect” and there has been no meeting.
This comes after United suffered their third Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday.
Solskjaer’s side went down 1-0 at Newcastle thanks to a fine strike from debutant Matty Longstaff.
Man Utd move for Moussa Dembele accelerating
Manchester United have advanced their interest in Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, according to transfer expert Duncan Castles.
Castles told the Transfer Window podcast: “There is a genuine, long-standing interest in Moussa Dembele and there is an opportunity for the club to do something there if they want to because Dembele is unhappy with his status at Lyon in that this was the season he expected to be the No 9, Memphis Depay has been demanding that he played the No 9 role, which is fascinating given that he’s clearly not a traditional No 9.
“Both players have been scoring, Dembele has actually got an incredibly good scoring rate given he’s had limited playing time in that position and isn’t a guaranteed starter.
“His valuation has dropped a certain degree, again because Depay’s been chosen ahead of him by the current coach.
“United have scouted the player since his time at Fulham and seen him as a long-term potential centre-forward for them.
“My understanding is that has advanced, it’s not got to the stage where offers have been made, but the kind of groundwork that you’d expect to be done ahead of a deal like that is beginning to happen.
“The key element to all of this is that they’re looking to do something in January already which suggests ‘we are not happy with performances, we need to upgrade further’.”

Emergency meeting over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has held an “unscheduled meeting” with members of the Glazer family to discuss the club’s poor start to the season, claims transfer expert Ian McGarry.
McGarry told the Transfer Window podcast: “Despite the claims of some at Old Trafford that everything remains the same regarding the Glazers and the position on head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in fact there is a unscheduled meeting between Ed Woodward and the Glazer family, the key directors, to reflect upon the start of the season which Manchester United have had and decide upon if indeed there needs to be a change in direction, whether that be changing the manager or indeed maybe changing the direction of the club with regards to strategy.
“There has been a lot of recalcitrance regarding the defence of Solskjaer, both from the club and outside the club.”
McGarry believes the fact United’s next fixture is against rivals and league leaders Liverpool has played a part in the scheduling of a meeting.
“I do think that maybe this conversation is being had because Manchester United’s next game is against Liverpool,” he added.
“I think the board are, even this board, not so blind as to see that if they were to suffer a heavy defeat against their oldest and most-hated rivals in a situation where Liverpool are already eight points ahead of Manchester City in the Premier League title race.”
What Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Fred at Newcastle
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to give Fred basic advice during the defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Brazilian has struggled at Old Trafford since his arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer.
And apart from one good performance against Paris Saint-Germain fans have not seen anything in Fred to suggest he is the top player United need to run their midfield.
What Solskjaer had to instruct the 26-year-old to do in the abject defeat to Newcastle proves it.
The Athletic claim the United boss had to tell Fred to try and spin his marker and drive forward.
Surely a player signed for £53million should be able to realise that’s what he should be doing against the likes of Newcastle.
Man Utd news LIVE: Robin van Persie has called his former club boring (Image: GETTY)
Robin van Persie on ‘boring’ Man Utd
Robin van Persie has labelled his former side Manchester United “boring” and has criticised them for a lack of effort.
Van Persie was speaking following United’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Newcastle on Sunday.
“To be fair it was a bit boring to watch,” the Dutchman told Premier League Productions.
“Predictable, not much going on and that is something that I don’t like to see really because even though you are low in confidence, even though you are not playing your best football, it can happen, but you have to put the effort in, you have to make the runs, you have to have a go.
“Try your luck, maybe the ball bounces well for you. They didn’t really do that enough.”
Man Utd set Alexis Sanchez asking price
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly wants Alexis Sanchez gone permanently.
Sanchez is spending the season on loan at Serie A giants Inter Milan having struggled at Old Trafford.
The Chilean joined the Red Devils last January from Arsenal though scored just five goals in all competitions.
And The Sun claim that United are demanding at least £25million for any club to take the former Barcelona star permanently.
It’s reported that United see no way how Sanchez can return to Old Trafford, regardless of how well he performs in Italy.

Moussa Dembele wanted by Manchester United
Manchester United are monitoring Lyon hot shot Moussa Dembele as a potential solution to their striking problem.
United are lacking firepower this season and have scored just eight goals in eight games – four of which came against Chelsea on the opening day of the season.
This sit in 12th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.
United allowed Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to depart this summer without replacing them and have gambled on the fitness of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Both have picked up knocks and neither have have hit the heights they’d hoped for so far in terms of goals with Mason Greenwood being thrust into the limelight as back up.
But, according to the Daily Mail, United had scouts in France last night to watch Dembele in action.

Marcus Rashford sends fan message
Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford has sent a message to fans after another defeat.
Rashford struggled as United were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle on Sunday to continue the Red Devils’ poor run of form.
Rashford tweeted: “You can’t hide in football and the last few weeks simply haven’t been good enough.
“As a United fan myself, that hurts. And you deserve better.
“We know we need to improve and that is our sole focus as a team and as a club.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sack latest
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is running out of time to turn the club’s fortunes around, according to Martin Keown.
“You start to look at where the system is, where the intensity is, and I think the belief now is ebbing away,” Keown said.
“I think this could be the beginning of the end for this manager.
“I don’t want to see a former player come in and leave the job.
“But there has to be a spark, there has to be a reaction.
“It seems to be just spiralling out of control at Manchester United at the moment, that was a really poor result today.”
Man Utd news LIVE: Marcus Rashford is not happy with his form (Image: GETTY)
Man Utd need to spend £300m
Lee Sharpe has told Manchester United they need to spend £300million and sign someone like Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
“I think you are looking at least £300million,” Sharpe told talkSPORT.
“You need someone like a Harry Kane for £200m/£220m that is going to score you 25 goals a season and you’ve got a different outlook in the team.
“So it is not going to be a cheap one.
“It’s difficult to keep up with the likes of Man City and Liverpool when they’ve set such high standards.
“You’ve got to stop comparing this team to Liverpool and City and great United teams of the past.
“They need to be given the chance to grow and educate themselves and become potentially what they could be in a year or 18 months’ time.”
Man Utd news LIVE: Mason Greenwood has suffered a back injury (Image: GETTY)
Mason Greenwood injured
Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer another injury blow.
The youngster has pulled out of the England Under-21 squad with a back problem.
A statement on United’s website read: “Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been forced to withdraw from the England Under-21 squad.
“The 18-year-old, who made his debut at that level against Turkey last month, had been selected for the upcoming games against Slovenia and Austria.
“He came on as a second-half substitute in the Reds’ 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday but has pulled out of coach Aidy Boothroyd’s group due to a back problem.”

Michael Owen returns with his latest Premier League picks (Getty/PA)The final day of the Premier League season is here and the title race between Manchester City and Liverpool has gone down to the wire. A win for City will secure them the Premier League title for the second year running, while Liverpool need to beat Wolves at Anfield and hope Brighton can pull off an upset against Pep Guardiola’s side. Chelsea travel to Leicester City for their final game of the season, while Arsenal face Burnley at Turf Moor and Tottenham host Everton at their new stadium. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be aiming to end on a positive note after a poor run of form as Manchester United play Cardiff City at Old Trafford. Once again our Brand Ambassador Michael Owen shared his thoughts ahead of the action with BetVictor. LIVERPOOL VS WOLVES Mohamed Salah is back in contention to face Wolves after missing Liverpool’s comeback against Barcelona (Getty Images)Champions League finalists Liverpool would be worthy winners of a 19th top-flight title should City slip up at the Amex, but I feel it will be in Madrid at the beginning of June, rather than Anfield on Sunday, that the Reds win the major trophy their magnificent season deserves. Wolves, themselves, have had a terrific first season back in the top-flight and are guaranteed to finish seventh in the table. Liverpool will go unbeaten at home for a second successive season if they avoid defeat to Wolves and I think Jurgen Klopp’s side can end their tremendous Premier League season in style. Michael’s prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Wolves BRIGHTON VS MAN CITY Can Raheem Sterling help secure the title for Man City? (Getty Images)Manchester City will become the first side since neighbours United in 2008-09 to retain the Premier League title if they win at the Amex Stadium and it is hard to see the Seagulls stopping City winning their 14th successive league game. That stat shows just how hard Liverpool have made City work for the title. The Seagulls showed at Arsenal on Sunday that they will not lie down and, indeed, could have snatched it at the death at the Emirates had they shown more composure in front of goal. City were not at their brilliant best against Leicester on Monday night but a moment of inspiration from skipper Vincent Kompany was enough to give them the points. Pep Guardiola’s side would love an early goal, but they may have to be patient on the south coast although I do believe they will, eventually, run out comfortable winners. Michael’s prediction: Brighton 0-3 Man City BURNLEY VS ARSENAL Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a hat-trick in the Europa League this week (Getty Images)Burnley have lost their last nine games with Arsenal in all competitions, but I believe the Clarets will pick up a point at Turf Moor irrespective of the Gunners’ result at Valencia in the Europa League on Thursday. Sean Dyche was not happy with his side’s opening 45-minutes at Goodison on Friday and I expect to see a much-improved performance from his side on Sunday. Arsenal must win to stand any chance of finishing in the top four, but their poor second-half against Brighton last weekend summed their inconsistent season up. Michael’s prediction: Burnley 1-1 Arsenal LEICESTER CITY VS CHELSEA This could be Eden Hazard’s final Premier League appearance for Chelsea (Getty Images)Chelsea are guaranteed a spot in the Champions League next term and the hope is that they are also Europa League finalists by the time they visit the King Power Stadium on Sunday. The Foxes are, however, looking to do the double over the Blues and, if there is to be a winner, I think the hosts will edge another entertaining game. Michael’s prediction: Leicester City 2-1 Chelsea MANCHESTER UNITED VS CARDIFF CITY Can Paul Pogba help Manchester United end on a high? (AMA/Getty Images)Cardiff lost their relegation battle last weekend and they have never kept a clean sheet in their 15 previous visits to Old Trafford. United were held to a draw at another relegated club Huddersfield Town last weekend, but I expect them to make no mistake against the Bluebirds. There will be a summer of transition and upheaval at Old Trafford with a number of new players coming in and several the old guard leaving the club. It will be fascinating to see how many of the side who start against the Bluebirds on Sunday are in the starting XI for the opening game of the 2019/20 season in August. Michael’s prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Cardiff City TOTTENHAM VS EVERTON Will Gylfi Sigurdsson strike against his former club? (Getty Images)Spurs need a point to guarantee their place in the top four for the fourth successive season, but that is all I feel they will get against an Everton side who will be looking to exorcise their 6-2 home defeat from the reverse fixture at Goodison just before Christmas. Everton have kept a clean sheet in eight of their last 10 league games, but I feel both sides will find the back of the net at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Michael’s prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Everton WATFORD VS WEST HAM Can Troy Deeney find a way past the Hammers? (Getty Images)I fancy Watford to go into the FA Cup Final on the back of a win against a West Ham side who have won their last two in the league without conceding a goal. The Hornets are looking to do the double over the Hammers for the first time in their history and a win would guarantee the club a top-half finish for the first time in the top-flight since the 1986-87 season. Michael’s prediction: Watford 2-1 West Ham CRYSTAL PALACE VS BOURNEMOUTH Wilfried Zaha will be aiming to end on a positive at Palace (Getty Images)Palace have won just 19 points at Selhurst Park – to go with the 29 on their travels – this season but I expect them to finish the campaign in style in front of their home supporters. Bournemouth did win their last home game of the season at the Vitality last weekend, but it was hardly an impressive performance against a Spurs side who played the vast majority of the second half with nine men. The Cherries have scored eight goals in their last two PL away games, but I feel it will be Roy Hodgson’s side who take maximum points. Michael’s prediction: Crystal Palace 2-0 Bournemouth FULHAM VS NEWCASTLE UNITED Can Salomon Rondon strike again for Newcastle United? (Getty Images)Fulham have won their last two home league games, but I feel United will take a point at Craven Cottage, having played their part in a terrific game with Liverpool at St James’ Park last weekend. The Cottagers have only conceded one goal in their last four games and they have improved dramatically under Scott Parker. I can’t split the sides in what promises to an entertaining farewell to the Premier League for the hosts. Michael’s prediction: Fulham 1-1 Newcastle United SOUTHAMPTON VS HUDDERSFIELD TOWN Shane Long has been in excellent form for Southampton (Getty Images)Southampton were blown apart by West Ham in London last weekend and the Saints have now conceded six goals in their last two Premier League games. That said I expect the hosts to keep the points even though Huddersfield picked up a welcome point against Manchester United last Sunday. Michael’s prediction: Southampton 3-1 Huddersfield Town Michael Owen is a brand ambassador for BetVictor. For more tips from Michael read his column here. Tottenham news: Pochettino admits frustration at Spurs’ £600m debt but rejects Wenger comparisons
Mauricio Pochettino is doing everything to avoid comparisons. On the day of a North Derby Derby, the last thing he would certainly admit is now known as Arsene Wenger must have felt.
Arsenal was all those years ago who found them, trying to sprint to success and silverware, the weight of paying off a new stadium chained to their ankles and dragging in the dirt .
Now it is Tottenham who have a new home. After nearly two years of exile in Wembley, Spurs opened their doors and entered their new premises in April.
Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that the club's new stadium has limited reconstruction efforts
Pochettino was still able the transfer counter rd from the club to sign Tanguy Ndombele
Tottenham has also spent £ 55 million on Real Betis winger Giovani Lo Celso on deadline day
It is without doubt one of the best, biggest, smartest, horns and bells stadiums in the world. But it is also one of the most expensive for £ 1 billion. Tottenham has been left with a debt of more than £ 600 m.
And with Spurs having won only one of their first three Premier League games, Pochettino admits that he is starting to feel the squeeze.
& # 39; Several clubs are asking the bank £ 600 million to invest in the team. Like Barcelona, or like different clubs. They create players who sign a debt and put the debt on the field to try and win. We are different.
Spurs reached the Champions League final despite not buying someone for two windows
We need to create the legacy for the future. In this period we have to deal with the limitations, but it is normal. The limitations, okay, we have to work hard to find a way to compete in this very tough competition, different from our rivals.
& # 39; We all cry & # 39 ;, he adds when asked if £ 600 million is enough to make some people cry. People Only people like Daniel (Levy, Spurs chairman) can manage this type of situation. Daniel and the board are able to create situations like this and offer the team, us and the fans, this huge project to feel like we are a big club. & # 39;
Levy assured fans it would not stop them on the transfer market. Tottenham broke their transfer record this summer to sign Tanguy Ndombele for £ 55m in a window where they spent £ 100m, without having bought two without a single purchase. final and again finished in the top four. Wenger did not reach the first, but the last was a pin on which he hung his coat, hat and walking stick. Yet Pochettino is resisting comparisons by making his own comparisons.
"The mistake is always to compare clubs with other clubs because the circumstances are always different," said Pochettino. "And only people inside know what is going on. For the past two years, Arsenal has signed Aubameyang, the best striker in Germany, Lacazette, the best striker in France, and one year later, Pepe.
& # 39; If you see us in five years, we have not signed one striker and now our main striker is Harry Kane, but our second specific striker is 17 years old, Troy Parrot. That is the difference in the projects.
I do not want to say that one is wrong and the other right. Only the way we work is completely different. Then we have to compete. Mercedes competes with Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull … Then we compete in the same race and if you judge, the judgments should be not just the race, but the whole process. & # 39;
Pochettino says that Spurs cannot compete with clubs such as Liverpool in the area of purchasing power
A victory and a defeat against Newcastle of course leaves something to judge quickly. And Pochettino believes it is also due to being a victim of their own success last season.
& # 39; The problem we had was that we were so good at our results and achievements, that we did not start in the way we would expect or people would expect, and that led to & # 39 ; Big issue & # 39; and & # 39; Pochettino is going to run away & # 39; and situations like this that someone without common sense has created. & # 39;
The Argentinian now has five seasons at Spurs, the point at which Sir Alex Ferguson would say a club needs to be recharged.
& # 39; You have to listen to people like Ferguson, but you have to analyze the circumstances of the club, & # 39; repeated Pochettino. Circumstances The circumstances at Manchester United and Tottenham are very different today. You just have to listen to Daniel. You know very well that the club's debt is £ 600 million with the banks. Certainly if you deliver a project that Tottenham has delivered over the past five years or the last 20 years, you cannot compare that to another club such as Manchester United.
Christian Eriksen could leave the club, but Pochettino says fans are decisions have to be trusted
& # 39; If you compare the team with someone else like Manchester City. If you do an exercise to see Liverpool, when Klopp arrived in October 2015, more than a year after me, when we played here, it was 0-0, not one in the starting XI is in the starting XI today. If you compare it to us, we still have eight or nine players in the starting XI. Look at the difference. & # 39;
Pochettino encouraged fans to trust him. Trust him with his team selections and trust him with what he is doing with Christian Eriksen, who has just started this season due to distractions about his future.
Eriksen wanted to leave this summer with Real Madrid and Barcelona his intended destinations, but there was no fixed interest and Pochettino said he had not left the 27-year-old yesterday, he would not go at all.
Nothing happened yesterday. What now? Is Eriksen coming back? "That is my judgment with my staff. You must be right. People must have faith. If we make the decision that he is going to play it because we believe that he can play the way we expect or that we need him to act.
"People will say, why do you play a Christian?" The teammates can say, why do you play a Christian when the rumors go that he is leaving? Gaffer, why don't I play when Christian wants to leave, wants to leave?
"In this situation enough things happen that I cannot translate to you and you to our fans. The only way to work hard and be all together is to trust us, in our decision, in our judgment. & # 39;

Harry Redknapp asked whether Tottenham can beat Ajax and win Champions League
Harry Redknapp has told Sky Sports that he believes Tottenham Hotspur have as strong a chance as any of the other Champions League semi-finalists to win the trophy next month.
Spurs have never reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, though they did take on Benfica in the last four of the European Cup back in 1962.
The north Londoners booked their place in the last four of the Champions League after a sensational ding-dong battle with Manchester City. Spurs ended up winning the match on away goals, with the score 4-4 on aggregate.
Former Spurs manager Redknapp believes Tottenham have an excellent chance of winning the competition, despite Ajax beating Juventus and Real Madrid. Liverpool and Barcelona are in the other semi-final.

“You didn’t think they were going to get out of the group stages,” Redknapp said. “Now they have a great chance. They’re in the last four, it’s wide open. It’s difficult to pick a winner, but Spurs have as big a chance as anybody.
“You’d take a 1-0, no away goal for Ajax. You always take a clean sheet, that would be a good result. They need to get on the front foot and put this young team to the test.”
TBR’s view
Redknapp is right, Spurs have an excellent chance of reaching the final. But Ajax are surely favourites to qualify after already knocking out Juve and Madrid.
Harry Kane is out injured, and has been joined by Harry Winks, Erik Lamela and Serge Aurier. There is good news, with Moussa Sissoko and Jan Vertonghen returning in time to play.
But with two starting players on the sidelines, Spurs will be weaker than their best. They need to get into the faces of the Ajax players, and use their home ground to their advantage.
